Okay, last time the chapter ended on High Arch-Warlord Barbbuster's inevitable triumph.

Therefore it is only fit the first POVs of the new chapter begin immediately on Sicarus.

If you want some action, you are going to be served...

And yes, it's a teaser, it's only has 5000 words.

I will likely put a more sizeable update by Sunday.

Enjoy!

And today is my birthday....

Mordart

Nothings surprised me this snippet. Except one thing: Khorne freeing Excess, that is bloody insane. Or if he just promises to do so if Lorgar wins his crusade, you need to rewrite to make clear. Because from where I'm standing, Excess is free. Though perhaps Logar doesn't realise it's JUST excess? And that the 5 other parts are... well, gone? That fits with despair of Nurgle, TZeenchs games, and Khornes laughter when he just goes out and kills Excess outright after a certain amount of time. That or Excess is so weak now that it gets ripped apart by Malal.

You pulled a Cortes! Do you think he was a villain or a hero?

Damn, this is really hyping up the level of do or die this black crusade is going to reach. Word Bearers latterly have everything to loss so they won’t retreat at all and everyone else is probably feeling the pressure and expectancy to perform or die if not from being on the bad end of 2 daemon primarchs then not wanting to be killed by the gods who they see as being personally responsible or invested in the battle. No retreat no surrender, Stalingrad indeed

I suspect releasing Excess is at best going to add to the Chaos, not help dispel it. Without the Aspects that were devoured by the other Great Powers of Chaos, Excess will never return as Slannesh. Now, that doesn't mean Excess couldn't still have a say in things, just not as it used to. I'm curious to see what The High Lords make of what comes screaming out of the Eye? And when it's discovered that Cadia is at best a SECONDARY target. The sheer carnage to come is literally mind-boggling when you think about it. Imperial vs. Chaos is bad enough, but when you realize Lorgar intends to leap into a three-sided Great Crusade level battlezone on TOP of attacking Cadia??

Antony444

This is Chaos. Khorne is the most 'frontal' of the Gods, but he's not definitely stupid. Excess will only be freed if Lorgar succeeds. Though you're right, may have to midfy the POV a bit. Lorgar is well aware the pieces are missing, he's not that stupid. But Excess can regenerate other Aspects (or so he hopes) like decadence, hedonism, etc, which will eventually grow again and negate the influence of the Aspects stolen.

Antony444

He's certainly not a hero, no. He was not motivated by the will of saving country from a great peril or anything like that, he went on the other side of an ocean to kill people who never knew his nation existed in the first place before his coming, and spread endless slaughter. People often wonder if Doombreed is Gengis Khan (he's not ITTL, it's Attila the Hun) but frankly, Cortes has always been a more fitting Champion of Chaos than the Mongols, because at least the latter respected some diplomatic rules and had some moral integrity. Of course, given his thirst of ambition and his lies, Cortes was more likely a Champion of Tzeentch, not Khorne.

Antony444

Yep. The name might have been prophetic...of course with the Warp, symbols and names are important. Whether the Gods will it or not... But it was always going to be ugly. The Word Bearers are fanatics, and for the first time in millennia, their Primarch is leading them. The dice is cast, let the galaxy burn...

Antony444

True, 'Slaanesh' perished at Commorragh, but Lorgar is ready to cut a lot of trees if it allows to find back some measure of light...of course to free Excess, one has to win first. Otherwise, it's Anarchy which is released, and there won't be any return back from that. Err...Cadia isn't a secondary target. Sure, it's not the ultimate of the Black Crusade, but they have to pass through the Cadian System the entirety of their forces, and to do that, they have to hammer it hard (because the Cadians aren't going to stand idle while they try to exit the Eye). But yeah, the High Lords are going to grimace...once they have the full picture, because for now, no one save Lorgar and Magnus have the full plan of the Seventeenth Legion available.

What about Cegorath or Eldrad vission about Excess chances of causing any trouble and regenerating was nill? The vission shouldn't be that clear cut with chances of Slaneesh being reborn if Stalingrad is so on the knife edge battle? Very nice preview. Just wetted the appetite for more. Thank you Antony.

You gotta love how sure if himself Lorgar is at the moment. Betting everything on an all or nothing plan that will, definitely go smoothly without any hiccups and miscalculations. :)

FOR THE EMPEROR

Antony444

You always regret making pacts with the infernal trio. The only question is how long it is going to take to arrive to that point, and how much it's going to cost you in the end.

Antony444

True. But he believes (rightly) that the Three wouldn't have stopped their squabbles to prevent Malal's ascension and this would have been a disaster in a lot of ways...

Boris Michenski

Ok... Lorgar is hypocrite and coward, who isn't even able to do sacrifice and Scorched Earth properly. When he started to talk about sacrifice I was sure Sicarus is about to be blown up, thus destroying Malal's (future) powerbase. That way at least one of the objective would have been done, after that Lorgar could have conquered another planet to be Sicarus 2.0 even in case of his failure if enough forces survived. Instead he went for half-mesure by putting Sicarus in stasis, probably expecting to come back with victory to do the clean-up. So i imagine once all his plan fail, Scaven will get free and even if whole other system would be barren, Anarchy will still get all Cathedrals and worship places it would ever need. Honestly, it's strange that he managed to fall even lower in my esteem.

5000 words is just a teaser. You are prolific, Antony. New thoughts to add. Has nobody noticed that part where taking out Kor Phaeron will give land in Ultramar? You just know Taylor is going to get the bounty for that, and rub it in that Cato Sicarius - I mean Valen's face. Also, you *are* going to give Corax his own chapter-opening response right? The way you did Tzeentch and the Emperor. It would be so appropriate and fitting. Finally, Mothac is giving us the sense even the religious fanatics want Slaanesh back to restore the Pantheon, rather than really wanting the Dark Prince back, right?

Confused

Well Lorgar really is going all or nothing here isn't he.

Kioras

Well Lorgar knows it is a simple truth. He either wins the Crusade, sacrifices Weaver to help power a Chaos ritual, split the Imperium and make sure Malal is not the fourth. Or he fails in a way that destroys his legion and damages a lot of serious attempts at future true Black Crusades. With the leadership and normal Chaos actions eliminating the rats would be almost impossible. Simply due to how Chaotic everything is.

Antony444

That wasn't a half-measure. If he had destroyed Sicarus, it would have been a reedit of the Destruction of Caliban and the dispersal of the Fallen, Skaven-style, spreading across the Eye of Terror. There is symbols in such actions, and the result would have been a Skaven exodus. Obviously, Lorgar didn't want that; give it a few years, and the Skaven would have a massive powerbase while he waged the Black Crusade

Antony444

Next chapter will indeed begin with Corax's answer, yes. The first words will most likely be 'You are not my brother'.

Antony444

Pretty much, yes. Extremely dangerous situations require even more extreme measures. Or at least that's his reasoning. It's worth remembering Lorgar and his Legion are religious fanatics.

Boris Michenski

Ah... I didn't take into account that Scaven would survive destruction of Sicarus Fallen-style... It's strange, in W40K there is 40000 ways to die horribly, particularly in Eye of Terror but this time there is no sure way to do the total extermination. Well, in that case I take back what I've said and level of appreciation of Lorgar is back to initial - may he die in worst way possible.
