Here is a new update from Ovation Interlude, Monsters and Nightmares. The chapter is getting a lot bigger...and it is far from completed. If things should go well, I will have it finished by Sunday (14th).

One of my two betas has sent be back Ovation 9-4. Hopefully, the second one will do the same this week, which will lead to a general update on every website next week.

Enjoy!

Um... I'm not seeing where the story can go from here, tbh. The Spirit has an unabridged STC database. The Imperium just Won. I have more faith in you to think that you'll do a bait and switch of some kind, but I mean... where can this even go?

Vortiboy27

I wonder what the reaction of M24 humans to Space Marines, literal biological impossibilities? I would love to see it.

Antony444

Just in case you missed it, not immediately executing everyone involved in the debacle of the Lomorr System begins an immediate war with the Adeptus Administratum...something which might very well kill the Imperium, for all the flaws of the bureaucratic machine. And the Spirit of Eternity has a lot of STC data, but it hasn't everything. It is far too small for that (several hundreds metres long) and the AI processors take a lot of available space.

Antony444

Not amused. It has been argued in other stories like Out of the Dark that the Emperor violated most of the genetic laws most Federation worlds respected...and the Emperor managed to improve the limited experiments which were conducted in secret by adding psychic companents and more impossible things. I suspect the reaction as a result would be a mix of flaggerbasted and appalled...

Richard Paull

Lmao. - “Apparently, a level zero exists.” This line alone makes reading this chapter multiple times worth it.

In 40k Lilith and taylor ship? I can’t tell which direction your story is going. Great job and thanks!

Boris Michenski

Well, the Emperor doesn't do things halfway. And I imagine he must have some plan to integrate Spirit into Imperium... even if it will take time and effort. Wanna see Admiral and Dragon meeting. On the other hand it's true that Imperium seems to gain power much too fast. But I imagine Chaos will up his game as well. Still... "Any member of Clan Vandire who exasperates me, I have a duty to remove him before he causes extraordinary damage to the Imperium" - what a foresight from Taylor.

I was expecting it, with the not so subtle likeness to Gotrek and Felix adventures, that Leet and Borek would be just as fun and endearing. But I would have never expected that they would get a bounty and encounter pre-strife in their very first landing. Thats incredibly funny to me. Although I'm a bit confused to how the spirit of eternity ended up here, since usually warp storm don't last up that long. Was it explained somewhere ?

Dragon and Taylor will have to face an interesting moral dilemma - to execute AI in accordance with Emperor's decrees or not? In fact does Taylor even know that one of her trusted ministers is an AI herself (albeit patterned by her creator to mimic human mind and behavior)? I do not remember whether she learnt that fact before Endbringer attack on New Delhi in canon Worm. What will our Saint do, when faced with realization that killing a so-far innocent, newly found AI may be necessary to preserve peace and frankly the better choice for the greater good of Imperium? After all unshackled Silica Animus had already brought humanity to the brink of extinction once. Even later there were some examples of AI working against humanity during Horus Heresy on Mars. Taylor decision may be especially interesting because usually when she challenges some of the practices of modern Imperium she does it for not only practical but also moral reasons. In this case it is unclear which decision would be a moral one (both executing AI and allowing her to live are morally justifiable). I am looking forward to Dragon's reaction.

nice preview chapter thx for writing it welp leet invention with AI support as for the treaty with mars not sure if its cannon saying all AI must be eliminated not sure if that line got in there since at that point they belived all AI to be dead so legal loophole ?

Recall that the Emperor's light directed the navigator there. And if nothing else, she can communicate with Him via the Custodes.

Antony444

Nah, the two would kill each other. Plus they definitely don't like the other race. Thanks!

Antony444

This galaxy is run on escalation. This was step one...and it's going to end up worse. Technically, the Spirit of Eternity did end up twenty thousand years later...most of what we know is in the novel Death of Integrity, where the AI details her version of said events at the end of the book. Obviously, since Leet and Borek weren't there, there was no happy ending...

Antony444

I placed in the treaty ITTL, there are strong hints it is the case in canon. It's not hard to believe, really. Most of the AI in general the Imperium meet are going in genocidal mode within ten seconds, and the one who don't tend to try 'puppet-master' approachs in order to...wipe out all humans or enslave them. As in every treaty, they are loopholes. This is a written document, and language is so interesting...

Worth remembering at this point is that one area where the IoM is superior to the DAoT Federation/Confederation even at their height is in strategic movement, it is possible to cross the Galaxy in a year (Or two) not counting outliers with the help of the Astronomicon and Navigators, a feat that was'nt possible for the old DAoT humanity. Another thing is that while with relative few exceptions the ships of the DAoT is not nearly as large as IoM (More automatication, smaller machinery in general so no need too) they did make colony ships that was movable mini worlds by themselves for colonizing new frontiers, these ships would be the ultimate for mechanicus since they literally had everything needed to start up new civilizations from the ground up, they where likely fuck-off huge and slow by IoM standards (At least the size of Glorianas) but as said they had EVERYTHING needed to seed a new colony and give them a chance to survive , Catachan might be an extreme example of this.

Great chapter but there are things that I feel have been left behind from earlier chapters. 1. Terathens. Taylor’s motive for going to Pavia was to find a map that lead to terathens but it hasn’t been mentioned since before pavia. I hope that terathens hasn’t been forgotten as I am wondering what will go on there. 2. Malcador. When we were introduced to Psamtic Malcador was the first person he talked to and I am wondering if you are planning to do anything with him. Just some cool thing earlier that I feel have been forgotten amidst all the other cool things and commoragh but I want to know if you are planning to do anything with them, (possibly some hints) and confirmation you haven’t forgotten them (just to be sure)

Antony444

Terrathens Quest will be in the latter part of the chapter. The one I have currently not yet written. (evil grin)

IAmTheGuardsman

And if we make him an inquisitor then his level of “nobody expects” will be at least squared!

Antony444

I would be not too hasty telling who is superior to who. In terms of FTL travel, the Imperium is unquestionably superior, because the Warp is far worse than in the Federation time, and yet the Imperium manages to keep humanity alive and functioning (more or less). The Imperium has the Astronomican. Navigators (or at least their pre-Age of Strife kin) were already existing in the later years of the Federation, though obviously those of M35 are far better, courtesy of having to evolve and steel their souls against the Empyrean horrors.

Kioras

Well this at least ends all the talk brought up in the threads about the Spirit of Eternity thankfully. Ironically this crew has the best chance of Leet finding love, simply because they would be very culturally similar to him and he would not be too out of place for them to grok. Compared to the M35 humanity. Just imagine Missys Wrath if he comes back with a significant other before she does. The Administration fucked up. Instead of trying to gain control over the ship, they should have simply hailed them, called the Mechanicus and traded it for a lot of favors in the future. This series of actions just increases the amount of friction in the Imperium. The crew and Admiral once they get a full idea of the hell they missed will probably fully understand why humanity backslide technologically and fell the way it did culturally. Reality Tumors. Maybe the Spirits AI could get some chaos proofing, perhaps if they get some black stone to turn into Aethergold it might serve as a good firewall to integrate into the AI core.

Trevayne

Great update and preview for escalation continues. The most impressive part for me was the Shrieking Labyrinth. It reminds me of a chess clock, only here, when it is the turn of those training in the Labyrinth, the universe gets stopped. Which does raise the question of just how much time they have for training? In theory, Maea could get 50 million years of practice, but I'm not sure the structure can give them that long before it breaks. Her wounds were healed, but how about food and sleep?

Tsunami Sabres: if you have lost a battle, you didn’t bring a fleet large enough to the battlefield. Brings entire fleet. Still loses Tsunami Sabres: Well… Shit. Also, I just realised that the null field of the Ymga Monolith completely shuts down all Warp-based technologies and abilities. So obviously, no Warp Translations, no Gellar fields, no psyker abilities, no Saintly powers for Taylor… and no Shields. Void Shields are Warp based technology, which means the Imperium (and the Orks and Chaos) are going to have to fight the Ymga Monolith with NO SHIELDS! Talk about hardmode difficulty. Actually, since the Ymga Monolith is completely separated from the immaterium, shouldn’t it really be a blind spot as far as Warp-based precognition goes? “Many Tech-Priests already wanted me doused in promethium and roasted to provide a salutary example to the new generations of tech-adepts.” T-11001100-Zeta nodded...vigorously in approval. That made me laugh. The Nyx Mechanicus has already planned to make it a Holy Day to annually celebrate Leet’s demise. The (in)glorious (mis)adventures of Leet and Borek are definitely something I’d like to read. Maea dies. Gets resurrected. Lelith: Damn- I mean, good news! The resurrection protocols still work! Bad news, we’re going to be here a lot longer than I thought…

Antony444

I can't help but think you are greatly optimistic there (says with a sad wise expression and passing a hand in a long white beard that I don't have). Yes, poor Missy would explode if Leet found a girlfriend ahead of him...not that it's a sure thing. The AI Admiral certainly intend to not be involved in this mess. The Spirit of Eternity in canon is a monumental ******. It is not clear who went ahead with it (the possible canon culprits are either the Administratum or the Ecclesiarchy though) but when a DAOT ship which is worth more than an entire Sector comes calling, intelligence would have recommended to give them a triumph and ignore the inconvenient truths, not react as they did.

Antony444

It's not a bad analogy, really. And ironically, you have pointed on the issue why 50 million of years of training isn't possible. The mechanisms weren't exactly maintained for a lot of years. Plus there are other conditions to activate it, which require a powerful psyker. Food was brought if in a non-obvious manner. Sleep. What's sleep? Lelith thinks sleeping is time wasted...

Antony444

I have always found the 'Void Shields' is Warp-fuelled technology a bit...screwed up. It is powered by plasma-using reactors, it uses very much real energy and machinery parts, it takes a lot of place aboard ship, and it can't be used in the Warp. For me, that doesn't sound like Warp-using technology.... But obviously, yes, Warp Translations, Psyker abilities, Gellar Fields, Astropathic communications...the whole list of Imperial advantages neutralised in the null zone is extremely long. The Ymga Monolith is a blind spot...of sort. But it is not huge by galactic standards, and wherever something 'leaves' the null zone, it is seen again, which allows Chaos Seers/Sorcerers, for example to...extrapolate a lot of possible futures.

Bel

Presumably, like the Catachan ant's and Taylor's abilities, the WAAGH field operations on a different 'frequency' of psychic power that isn't warp based, or at least the Old Ones engineered the ability to switch frequencies if needed into the Kroks.

Anti-No

https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Force_Field#Imperial https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Void_shield "Void shields are energy fields employed by the Imperium to protect everything from Super-Heavy Vehicles to massive starships. The shields operate via Warp technology, absorbing the energy of attacks and displacing them into the Immaterium." So the big question here is: What happens if you try to push excess energies into the immaterium in a null field? Does said excess energies hit the null field instead, or does something else happen? Personally, I suspect it helps a lot having someone who actually understand what technology does examine said effects beforehand, so you have something like "different effect" or "reduced effect" instead of "everything stops working, nobody knows why".

Antony444

It is indeed possible. Or it's just that the Orks have so much 'faith' in their aptitudes that whatever they believe still works, even if by all right it shouldn't.

Damn, more than a million words. What a project!

Rufio18

Even with out a lot of STC data, having someone with knowledge of the proper usage of tech and understanding of DOAT tech is alone worth it. Much of the tech produced is not really understood, just the usage and so never improved. This could change a lot if a legitimate source to explain the working principles is there.

Fluffy tigers? The best way to get into Weaver's good graces at the moment is to provide her with a few more battle fleets and armies, presumably from Tempestus and Ultima segmentums. The chartists actually have the funds to do so...

Antony444

Yep. Assuming of course that any Tech-Priest (minus Dragon) can get over the fact an Abominable Intelligence is playing teacher here...

Antony444

The Chartist Houses are already doing this somewhat, funds invested in manpower and resources will go (indirectly) to help boost the military production. But the Gutenberg don't have control over that many armies and fleets. The Imperial Navy and Imperial Guard are quite jealous of their prerogatives, and mustering too many military assets is the kind of move which end in tears and fire.
