Knight Rapport I -- In the far north on Artona I's largest continent. Alden says it looks about the size of Illinois on the map to him. (Alden being from Illinois probably influences his size perception a little, but we're definitely talking large chonk of land.) The territory is labeled "privately governed," and according to Stuart even Grand Senators can't just come over for a visit.

Some people have asked about the weather. Artonans enjoy hotter climates than humans, but each of the Artonas is a large planet with diverse landscapes and climates. Like humans, Artonans live all over their globes. Right now, it's summer in Rapport I and about 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

The forest at the Rapport, at least the small part of it Alden has seen so far, is mostly one single kind of extremely large tree with almost no undergrowth.

“Are you sure—?”

“Stu-art’h,” said Alden, sprinkling a condiment that looked like ashes onto a paper-thin rectangle of raw meat petal, “if you ask me one more time if I’m sure about ‘weaving a friendship’ with you, I’ll be insulted. I promise I understood the warning and the question.”

Stuart clamped his mouth shut and watched Alden fold the alien vegetable slice over the ash the same way he had when he’d demonstrated.

I bet he hasn’t blinked three times since he came back with the food.

He’d been relieved when Stuart left the cottage to fetch the meal. The Artonan had been gone for almost twenty minutes, collecting all the components of their supper. Or second meal, in Stuart’s case.

His absence had given Alden time to think. For a while, he’d just stood by the learning cushion, staring out the window and asking himself how he would actually deal with caring about someone who might be self-sacrificing to the point of self-destruction.

Stuart was being frustratingly unwilling to elaborate on the specifics of the situation until he was completely sure Alden had heard him correctly, but Alden already knew enough to draw the obvious conclusions. For some reason, Stuart’s family and whoever else was included in the “people who know me well” category thought he would die during his first affixation or soon after it.

And he planned to do it anyway.

While he’d gazed out at the trees that sometimes pulled bodies down into the soil, Alden remembered how angry Boe had been, that night by the pinball machine, berating him for not caring enough about how the risks he took affected the people he’d left back at home.

It wasn’t the same, since Alden’s deal with Ro-den had been the product of an hour’s thought, and Stuart’s decision was most likely the product of a whole lifetime’s worth. But he still almost called to apologize to Boe again.

The only reason he didn’t was because it would freak his friend out…and because he couldn’t think of how to be fully honest about his current location without making the freak-out an extended one.

Instead, he’d changed into his t-shirt, slid the cottage door open wide, and dragged the floor table over to it. Fresh air and good weather were the only ideas he had as far as banishing worry from the room went.

He and Stuart sat across from each other now, the dishes spread between them. When Alden looked to his left, he could see the stream at the bottom of the slope.

“We can catch <<shiny water bugs>> and put them in jars if you want,” said Stuart. “There are a lot of them this time of year.”

“Zansees?” Alden tried the new word out.

“A jar full of them makes a decoration for the night. And then you let them go in the morning.”

Alden dropped his alien vegetable creation onto the flat stone Stuart had heated with a spell. While it sizzled, he reached for his favorite thing on the table. They had three different dishes total—the slices, skewers that alternated the peach-colored meatpetal with chewy green blobs, and k’rethkan very similar to the ones he’d eaten on Artona II.

The crispy fried rolls were filled with strips of the vegetable, and just as he remembered, it tasted a lot like steak. With a hint of herbaceous bitterness that enhanced the whole experience.

All the other offerings on the table were condiments. And there were so many of them. He spooned a raspberry jam look-alike onto his k’rethkan and bit into it.

It was jammish. Not raspberry.

Tomato-blueberry, he decided. Like a more interesting ketchup.

“Thank you for getting the meatpetal. It’s delicious.”

Stuart seemed to favor the skewers. Particularly the chewy blobs. They tasted too much like Alden imagined a Christmas candle would if you bit into it, but they smelled great while they were cooking on the rock.

“I didn’t mean to insult you by questioning your sureness,” Stuart said, watching him eat. “Several members of my family mentioned the possibility that…I might not be a qualified interpreter of a human’s <<mood>> and intentions.”

Alden frowned around a giant mouthful of food.

“But they haven’t even spoken to you! Most of them have never said more than a few words to a human. And I have made <<dedicated effort>>.”

Alden swallowed. “Listen, you can’t keep hinting about what they said about me and you being friends in the big living room. I don’t know how to answer if I don’t know what the exact problem is.”

Stuart suddenly felt the need to stare at a little pitcher full of sauce instead of Alden.

Maybe I’ll just rip the bandage off myself.

“From my perspective, the worst thing they could think about me is probably that I’m being nice to you just because I want things from you. That’s not—”

“They don’t think that!” Stuart exclaimed. “Aunt Alis gave you a commendation. They all know you sacrificed your body in protection of Kivb-ee—I have all of her latest messages for you—and if they had <<dared>> to say something so <<an obscenity implying extreme stupidity>> about your character I would have called upon her to describe your every wound to them in detail until they felt shame.”

He intoned the word for shame so darkly that Alden almost felt like he’d done something wrong just by hearing it.

“Not that they shouldn’t feel shame anyway.” Stuart leaned over and blew on the heating rock. The sizzling noises increased in volume.

How did that work? The original spell didn’t involve blowing.

“This morning, I found some of the proper adults in the living room and told them I wanted to invite you to our home. There was a <<tedious>> amount of discussion, but I persuaded them to agree. Then Rel walked past the door and said, ‘You did form Privacy of the House with the Avowed before he left last time, didn’t you, Stu?’

“And I said no. Because you were my guest. And you would be my guest this time.”

“Does ‘guest’ mean something unusual in your house?” Alden asked before he could go on.

“It’s a <<small matter>>. But only a hn’tyon can declare someone a guest in the Rapport,” said Stuart. “Obviously a guest doesn’t have to form a contract for Privacy of the House. That is for visitors and people <<conducting business>>.”

“Oh…but you’re not—”

Customarily anyone who has taken all the necessary steps and <<declared intent>> to their family is also welcome to enjoy small privileges like the guest right. In their own house. Usually, you invite your first guest over and everyone greets them warmly, and then after they depart—as long as they were not an <<unworthy>> choice—the highest ranked member of your household who met them says something about how happy they are that your <<wise>> decision-making will <<enrich>> the lives of your fellow knights in the future.”

He turned his skewer, watched it for a little too long, and then looked back up to Alden. “That’s what Father said to Emban anyway. When Emban had her first guest over. Maybe they say something different in other houses.”

Alden remembered how excited Stuart had been to bring the wevvi cart. “Your first guest…came in covered in dirt and jumped out the window…”

“When I decided to attend LeafSong, I imagined I would invite my first guest from among my new schoolmates. But after coming to know them better, I didn’t want to bring any of them here.”

“I truly don’t mind swearing not to share your family’s secrets.”

Let’s tattoo me, Alden thought, and reduce a fraction of whatever the objections to me are.

“Of course you don’t mind,” Stuart said.  “You are an honorable person. And you will be my friend. So I don’t want us to wear a mark that obligates you to secrecy about my personal weaknesses, sufferings, or mistakes.”

Boe wants a contract. Stuart refuses one.

Actually, though, his reasoning was pretty flattering.

“Besides,” said Stuart, “if you swore to the privacy of every member of the household except for me, they would still be dissatisfied. Apparently some people believe I am too young, <<overwrought>>, and <<at a crossroads>> to choose who I share my own truths with.”

He changed his voice when he said “young”, “overwrought”, and “at a crossroads” significantly enough that Alden could tell three different relatives had spoken the words.

“After Rel asked that, everyone attempted to explain to me that an acquaintanceship with an Avowed had to be managed responsibly. They said maybe I should be monitored by someone other than Evul if I wanted to keep in contact with you, and I started to get <<frustrated>> that they weren’t listening. So I explained more clearly that I hoped this visit would be one of many throughout our lives.”

Alden rescued his ash-seasoned slice before Stuart could blow on the rock again and turn it into actual ash. “That’s a nice thing to hope for. They didn’t like it?”

“I think….before then most of them may have assumed I was still <<making amends>> for my mistakes on the day we met. And that I would naturally stop at some point. When they realized I didn’t view our conversations as a temporary <<project>>, the arguments started.”

The confirmation that the majority of the art’h family considered Alden a very good person but not good serious friend material stung, but not as much as he would have expected. Maybe it was because Stuart was so outraged. Or maybe it was just because Alden had a couple of concerns of his own that he had been ignoring, and he could imagine the adult art’hs having similar ones.

“We live very different lives,” he said while he watched Stuart angrily chew another one of the green blobs. “I doubt many future knights are out there right now becoming close friends with Avowed.”

“No. They aren’t.” He looked toward the stream and beyond it. “Now is the time for them all to focus on strengthening their relationships with each other.”

Alden watched him closely.

Had Stuart wanted other knight-hopefuls for friends and missed out somehow? And then LeafSong had been a bust, too. And now he had brought home a B-rank Rabbit from Earth, one who it probably looked like he had fixated on after a bizarre limb-loss incident.

Maybe his family is just confused.

It was a confusing situation if you hadn’t been one of the two parties involved.

“Did your family mention the power imbalance between us?”

He and Stuart hadn’t touched on it since their first phone call.

“The topic was assaulted at length and from many directions,” said Stuart. “But I assured them you weren’t only talking to me out of politeness, fear, or a sense of duty. And Evul agreed with me when she troubled herself to stop by the living room and add her voice to the discussion.”

“True. I’m talking to you because we have great conversations and it’s fun.”

Alden took a bite so that he could think for a second more. He almost didn’t want to bring up what, to him, was the obvious thing. Maybe it was so obvious that it would be offensive to the Artonan boy. Or maybe it wasn’t clear to Stuart at all, and he’d argue. And then Alden would be having a fight about a personally sensitive topic with someone who was on his way to becoming one of the universe’s protectors at an extraordinary cost.

He swallowed. “I’m just going to say this even though it may not need to be said, because it will be heavy for me if I don’t. It would upset me if you ever summoned me without my permission.”

Stuart paused halfway through pulling a piece of meatpetal off the skewer.

“A lot,” Alden added.

What he wanted was a shocked expression and a wide-eyed Stuart declaring that of course he would never

He didn’t get it.

Stu-art’h blinked a few times, set his food aside, and looked toward the stream again. While Alden fidgeted in his seat, expecting some kind of answer to come any second, the Artonan continued gazing into the distance with a slight frown. There was an unidentifiable change to his posture that made him look older.

Finally, after an agonizing wait, he said, “I want you to have a life that is free from horror. And free from shitty. And joyful all of the time, not just some of it.”

He’s talking about what I told him I wanted out of life on our last call…I have to stop teaching him English swear words. They sound too strange coming out of his mouth.

“So I would like to promise you that I would never summon you against your will, even in a time of <<dire need>>. But I don’t think the oath I’ve sworn and will swear again allows me to speak that promise truthfully.”

“You don’t think?”

“It doesn’t,” Stuart said more firmly. He looked back at Alden. “Not right now. It’s not a simple contract, where rules are set and I must follow them without <<deviation>>. My interpretation of the most correct action can change. But if Evul were to fall on top of the table right now, <<gruesomely>> injured and only moments from death—-”

“That’s a very specific and dark example.”

“—and if you refused to use your skill on her, but I had the authority to force you to do so, I would. For the good of the Triplanets. Even if you hated me for it and were no longer my friend.”

“Well, I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I refused to pick your injured sister up off the meatpetal anyway,” said Alden. “Of course I would do that for you. That’s not really the kind of situation I mean.”

They stared at each other.

“I know what you mean,” said Stuart.

“You do?”

“I was already involved in summoning you without your permission once. It wasn’t my idea, but I was there. And I behaved wrongly toward you in almost every way. I even offered to summon you often in the future. I did mean voluntary summonses, but I still acted as though working for me would naturally be something you wanted to do.”

“I almost forgot that part. You promised to pay me well.”

Stuart blinked. “You almost forgot that part?”

“Yes,” said Alden. “You said it at the same time you introduced the idea of being a Hn’tyon of the Mother Planet, and I was more focused on that. I wasn’t referring to the day with the mishnen, though. I know I like to mention it, but that’s my way of trying to be funny-mean. You’ve apologized. It’s behind us. I don’t think you’re going to feed either of us to an alien animal again. But I…”

Stuart waited patiently while he searched for the right explanation.

“I just wanted you to know that my feelings about being an Avowed are too complicated for a summons to be completely casual to me,” he said. “Especially as a Ryeh-b’t. I realize we’re the casual summons class, and I chose to be one. So that may sound odd. But I want things to be different between me and my friend than they are between me and every other summoner on the Triplanets.”

“I understand.”

“Yes?”

Stuart placed a hand over the center of his own chest.

“Good,” said Alden. “And I understand that you are going to become a knight. And that your family thinks it will be very dangerous and you’ll die. But you think you won’t and it’ll be worth it. And of course I’m not going to wait to see what happens before I decide you’re worth my emotional…” What’s a word that means investment? “…emotional giving.”

The Artonan boy beamed at him.

“Whoever told you they’d rather be sure you’re going to survive before they weave a friendship is a gokoratch,” Alden said.

“Most of them don’t say it like that.” Stuart looked startled. At the word choice, Alden hoped. “Those who are preparing for their own <<first binding>> just…feel it is wisest to exclude me from their companionship. And a few of the others <<berate>> me so much and try so hard to change my mind that I no longer want to be around them.”

“Gokoratches,” said Alden.

“No, they’re just protecting themselves as they prepare for the trial ahead of them. Or their families want them to avoid an <<attachment>> that might end badly. I do see their perspective. I just wasn’t expecting it to happen when I first announced my decision. At the time, I…misunderstood how everyone thought of me.”

So he wasn’t talking about the LeafSong kids at all. He meant the other future knights. The other Rapport adolescents. Probably some of the ones Alden had seen in the vision, wearing the purple coats.

The ones who are choosing the same thing Stuart is.

Still…

“There is a famous new song on Earth that I think you need to hear,” said Alden. “It applies to this situation. I’ll get my tablet.”

“Let me give her the suitcase now.”

“No.”

“But she’s crying.”

“She’s not crying. She’s <<gurgling>>. Because the last time she gurgled, you came and took the message from her instead of making her perform proper delivery.”

Alden the ryeh-b’t and Alden the Ryeh-b’t gave Stuart pitiful looks.

They’d taken a walk upstream until they reached an area that was out of view of the house and cottages to have their training session. The blue suitcase, which Alden had volunteered as a reward, was just behind him. But Stuart had illusioned the spot it sat in so anything standing there was invisible.

The red ryeh-b’t got so excited every time Alden produced the case.

Now she stood halfway between the two of them, claws gripping the top of a root. She wore a lightweight harness with a tube that could be filled with whatever she was delivering. The trick she was supposed to be learning was a flappy hover, with the message tube turned toward the recipient so that they could take it from her without her landing.

But she didn’t want to flap in place right now.

“Just wait.” Stuart was sitting far enough away that they were raising their voices to talk. He was on his own giant root, on a cushioning spell he’d cast with a chant and a plant that looked like a tangled up dandelion head. He’d produced it from a small belt pouch that was hidden by his tunic. “She’ll do it soon.”

Alden had a cushioning spell, too. It felt like sitting on a marshmallow that was slowly sinking. And it smelled like basil. Alden didn’t know if that was the spell or the plant that had been involved in casting it.

“I have an idea,” he said, grinning across the distance.  “Maybe she’ll come to me if I sing.”

Stuart began to purple. “I don’t think the numbers below that video are real! I think it’s a joke you <<brewed>> in the <<sour cauldron>> of your thoughts.”

“Tell me how to get Earth internet here, and I’ll show you how not-sour my thought cauldron is. Finlay’s songs are popular. Someone commenting on it ranked our efforts, and they said I was the second most enthusiastic flapper.”

Which was minimizing his contribution. He was definitely the first most enthusiastic member of the group when it came to the cannibalistic flapping. That commenter was just sucking up to Astrid.

“Gokoratching is now a global hobby on Earth thanks to you. You’ve changed my planet.”

Stuart shook his head. “This is not how I want to become a changer of worlds.”

Distressed not to be the center of attention anymore, the ryeh-b’t took to the air and came to deliver her message properly.

Alden said, “Good delivery,” as instructed, and then they played with the suitcase. Her favorite game so far involved him setting the suitcase upright repeatedly, so she could tackle it, claw it a few times, then stand on top of it in a victory pose.

“Is she finished growing?” he asked, watching her clobber the luggage again. “She seems to be around the same size as the last time I saw her.”

“She’ll only be a little larger,” said Stuart. “Her growth has slowed. I do think she’s going to be a good adult. Some ryeh-b’ts become less <<affectionate>> as they age, but she isn’t.”

“Kivb-ee says this breed is known for athleticism and a merry nature.”

“Yes. I might have picked one just like her when I was younger, if it had been an option.”

“No pets when you were growing up?”

Stuart watched the ryeh-b’t stomp on the defeated suitcase.

“I remember asking for an egg a few times. To hatch and train. Nobody ever said I couldn’t have one, but I think there might have been an agreement to distract me from the idea whenever I mentioned it. I would have struggled if there were any mishaps. Father bought me husenots instead.”

Alden recognized the word. “The little animals that look like colorful rocks? We have those on Anesidora. People keep them in tables as a decoration.”

“Mine started in a table. But once my family realized I enjoyed collecting them, everyone searched for rare colors and patterns to give me. They have their own room now.”

“A whole room? That’s…a lot of husenots.”

“Are you picturing them piled up to the ceiling?” Stuart sounded amused.

“Maybe. Is that not right?”

“We put the habitat below a transparent floor in what used to be an extra sitting room. You can see them when you look down. They don’t all <<tumble>> out the door when it’s opened.”

“That makes more sense.”

“Do humans pile up some kind of animal like that?”

Alden laughed. “No. But we don’t have any native animals that pretend to be rocks for days at a time. Can we add the husenot room to the itinerary?”

“Yes. We’re ahead of schedule anyway.”

Alden tried not to let his smile fade. That’s right. He had “tell Alden everyone thinks I’ll die” after dinner and ryeh-b’t walking.

“Stuart—” He was planning to ask why, exactly, everyone thought that. As delicately as possible.

But at exactly the same time, Stuart said, “Tell me more about Anesidora.”

“You want to hear about the Sinker Sender?”

“Obviously I wonder. But it doesn’t have to be that. Anything that happened to you since the last time we talked would be interesting. Your days are so similar to my own in some ways and so different in others.”

“The Artonan language instructor you were outraged by is gone.”

“Ah!” Stuart’s face brightened. “You all performed a righteous scholarly exit, and the school was forced to apologize to you.”

“No. She wants to live on the Triplanets, so she quit her job to spend time searching for wizards who might want to bring her here.”

Stuart tilted his head. “I’m confused.”

“We were all a little confused, too. Our new instructor seems much better. She told me to stop coming to class.”

“Now I’m more confused.”

“Let me tell you about gym! We were in teams, and we…”

******

Alden talked for a long time, with Stuart interjecting whenever he wanted an explanation of something or found a place where their experiences matched.

He thought it was totally normal that Søren had set himself on fire; his own classmates injured themselves frequently trying out new spells.

But he found the categorization of Brutes into one named class flummoxing once Alden had described some of his schoolmates’ powers. “Someone who can reshape their own flesh doesn’t belong in the same category as someone who focuses on swift movement. They’re not similar.”

Stuart had come over to sit on the same root as him now that they were through with ryeh-b’t training. Other Alden was hanging upside down from a branch over their heads.

“Do you think they’re similar?” Stuart asked. His back was against the trunk,  feet stretched out toward where Alden sat cross-legged on a renewed cushioning spell. “Maybe it’s a species <<accommodating>> category to aid with their perception of their abilities.”

“I haven’t given enough thought to it. But Brutes are the largest class on Earth, and members of the same Avowed class have a sense of companionship with each other. If we considered every variety of Brute to be separate classes it would definitely change something socially. And Brutes do all get a lot of foundational enhancements. The idea on Earth is that they’re the group with powers centered on their own bodies.”

“I do understand that. Most species struggle to accurately <<conceptualize>> the self beyond the physical. So giving you a way to perform magic that feels like an <<extension>> of the abilities you already possess is one logical solution.”

“Right,” said Alden. “Nobody has much trouble using what we call ‘speed foundation points’, for example. Learning to safely use the power and take full advantage of it takes time and practice. But just wanting to be faster and doing it comes naturally. Most people know what it feels like to try to run harder, and maybe because of how the affixation is designed, doing it as an Avowed seems a lot like the same kind of thing you’ve always done. With more amazing results.”

He looked down at his hands. “That’s how it feels with these anyway. I think I’d like to have them enhanced until they’re about the same as Lute’s.”

“For wordchains?”

“And for other things.”

Stuart looked down at his own fingers, interlaced in his lap. After a while, he said, “I’ll have mine altered as well. Maybe not in quite the same way as your foundation points. That’s an option but not the only one. And I won’t choose it during the first binding of my authority. But…eventually. It’s a useful change.”

His eyes flicked up.

Checking me for my reaction.

“I already knew knights had their authority bound,” Alden told him. “I was waiting for you to say it yourself. This morning I asked Esh-erdi why it’s never mentioned, and he told me that many people swear to maintain a respectful silence.”

Stuart straightened. “That doesn’t mean you have to! Especially not with me.”

“I was trying to do the right thing.”

“I wondered how much you knew, or if you knew at all, and then I decided you didn’t. And I was so nervous to tell you!”

“Why?” asked Alden. “It’s something you do so that you can go to places full of chaos and fight demons better. There’s no reason for me to be upset about that, except for the fact that we live in a universe where people have to go to places full of chaos and fight demons.”

“I thought…” Stuart said. “If I were an Avowed and I were to learn what knights were without having known before, and without fully understanding, I might become upset about many things.”

Something plinked onto the root between them and bounced once toward Alden. He looked down just in time to see it was the zipper pull that had been gnawed off of his suitcase earlier. A heavy flapping and a rush of air announced the arrival of the zipper’s new owner, who snatched it up before taking off into the forest with it.

“She’s running from us,” Alden noted.

“She hopes we’ll chase her. It’s not a fair competition since she can fly, and I’m not going to shoot her down with spells.”

They watched her land on a distant limb.

“What will you choose for your skill?” Alden asked. “If you don’t mind telling me.”

“If all went as I hoped today, I had put telling you about it on the itinerary for tomorrow. Do you mind waiting? I want to show you a particular spell first, and it will take a long time to cast.” He paused. “Or maybe me <<grandly presenting>> it sounds self-indulgent.”

“Are you joking? Now that I know grand presentation is an option, I’ll accept nothing less.”

Stuart smiled and winced at the same time. “If the spell fails now, I’ll look silly…returning to our discussion of your teammates—I think I would get along with Lucille.”

Alden lifted his eyebrows in surprise. “I didn’t realize you were selecting favorites while I talked.”

“She’s thinking about who she’ll be in the future. She’s set a challenging goal for herself, and she’s willing to suffer humiliation and the bad-opinion of others in pursuit of it. How did the final race end for you all?”

“You’d probably get along with several of them. Once you were used to their personalities. Anyway, the rope I bought for that day had a piece of smaller, clear string in it that’s usually used for catching fish.”

Talking about the obstacle course naturally led to a discussion of the dinner at the mall. Which Stuart seemed to find odd.

“I feel that it should have been more formal or more festive,” he said. “For an occasion celebrating your acceptance as students at a new school, a casual meal in a public location seems <<unfitting>>.”

Further questioning revealed that, in Stuart’s opinion, the dinner would have been more normal if Alden and his classmates had spent several hours quietly absorbing secret wisdom from their new instructors while multiple courses, each with special meaning, were served. Or, if the focus of the event had been on the class bonding with one another, he thought the instructors should have done whatever the human equivalent of dropping off a bunch of rare potions and enchanted rings was before leaving the students to go wild.

“Do you attend a lot of parties like those at LeafSong?” Alden asked. “You weren’t at the big one where I met your father, but you had just been injured.”

“I only attended the traditional student stress-releasing party held during the entrance exams. It was fun at the time. But I decided not to attend any more for awhile. The <<camaraderie of celebrants>> had more of an impact on my judgment than I expected it to.”

“For my taste, the class dinner was just right. And there were husenots at one of the shops.”

“Is the Rosa Grove building still there?” Stuart asked. “Or was it one of the ones destroyed?”

“The mall was safe. Only the ground floor flooded, and it wasn’t too bad when I saw it on the news.”

“Were the husenots…?”

“They were upstairs.”

Stuart looked relieved.

“If we’d just left a few minutes later or earlier, my night would have been a lot easier,” said Alden.

He thought about ending it there and switching to a lighter story. Stuart wouldn’t mind hearing about the rooftop-to-rooftop rollercoaster. Or commenting on the situation with Hazel Velra at the birthday party.

But he does actually know Esh-erdi and Lind-otta. Of course he’s curious about how they’re using their skills and the big magic event that just happened.

He decided he’d just hit the highlights.

But the more he talked, the more talking felt like something he wanted to do. Sitting on the cushion spell in the warm forest, with sunlight slanting through gaps in the branches and a ryeh-b’t trying to tempt the two of them into a game of chase with a zipper, it was hard to imagine a setting farther away from the disaster.

It felt like he’d left Anesidora behind a month ago instead of hours.

“I really don’t think Esh-erdi would mind me telling you what happened in the greenhouse,” he said when he approached that part of the story. “He said he would spread the truth around to wizards. I think he just doesn’t want to let the Anesidoran legal system know until he understands what its role is and how humans will react. He’s trying to protect me from inconvenience and Zeridee from being accused of doing something wrong. He says he knows her family.”

“The knights of the und’h family live in Rapport III,” said Stuart.

That wasn’t that surprising after all the pieces of the puzzle Alden had collected. It explained a lot. From Zeridee being able to obtain a position on Earth at a young age, to her familiarity with Stuart, to…

“Do all children of knight families have the same abnormally strong body thing you do?”

Stuart’s brow furrowed. “You can’t use that word for abnormal that way. But it is common in families like ours, where becoming a hn’tyon or entering service through <<votaryship>> or other contracts is the usual course.”

“The und’hs?”

“Yes.”

“I understand now,” said Alden. “Maybe she was trained to be a knight in her childhood, and she didn’t want to. Or a votary. Being able to kill an Avowed with bare hands sounds like it might be what votaries learn to do?”

Stuart snorted.

“What?”

“I’m going to need to explain a lot to you this weekend. I’m looking forward to it. But why are you mentioning killing Avowed?”

“In the greenhouse…”

He talked and talked. The conversation was lengthened, but also eased, by focusing less on how he’d felt during all of it and more on explaining complicated water behavior, giggling door seals, and literally everything about Liam Long in a foreign language to someone who didn’t know what swim briefs or scratchart cards were.

When the story—as much of it as could be told—was finished, Alden was less drained than he would have expected to be if he’d known he was going to deliver a full account of the disaster. He wondered if there was some magic in the Rapport that made you feel more at ease.

Stuart took his ryeh-b’t back to the house and returned with two clear glass jars and a small net. Then the two of them stood in the stream just downhill from the cottage, pants rolled up to their knees and squishboot removed despite a couple of disapproving looks from the Primary’s son.

Alden learned to catch shiny water bugs. They moved fast and looked like metallic grains of rice.

“Some of them aren’t silver,” he said, noticing a few green ones when he emptied the net into his jar for the second time.

“Do you have a yellow-orange one yet?”

Alden checked the jar. “Not yet.”

That was all that needed saying for a while.

When they had captured enough zansees to satisfy Stuart, who felt there was a correct number to make a good decoration, Alden put his boot back on and they headed toward the cottage.

“You’ve been through more than one terrible experience. In less than a year,” said Stuart. “That’s shitty.”

Alden, who was preserving his jar so that his water bugs didn’t get sloshed around, looked over at him. “It’s absolutely been shitty,” he agreed. “But there have been good things, too.”

“If you want, I can introduce you to one of the healers I know who help with alterations and support of the mind. I experienced a severe…injury isn’t the right word in my opinion. But when I was very young, Father personally interviewed every <<renowned>> specialist on the Triplanets for my sake.” Stuart looked at him over the top of his own jar, his expression guarded. “You seem well to me, but if some memory or emotion tied to all that’s happened to you is <<tiresome>> for you, you might consider seeking help with it.”

They stood on the hillside, holding their zansees.

“I’m sorry you were hurt when you were younger,” Alden said finally.

“I’m sorry you keep having to deal with wounded Artonans,” said Stuart, starting back up the hill. “And that I let you talk me into ignoring the human bedtime I put on the itinerary. It was there for a reason. You’re healing. You need even more sleep than usual.”

Ah. That was all there was to it, thought Alden, deeply relieved as he watched Stuart march ahead of him. Just a single offer. Not a whole conversation that will ruin the nice time we’re having here at the end of the day.

“It is weird-weird that I keep carrying hurt people through trouble,” he said, hurrying to catch up, his trait helping him close the distance in a moment.

“What’s weird is that you keep finding yourself in trouble,” said Stuart. “Carrying someone once you’re already there makes sense.”

“Does it?”

“If Lind-otta were there, she would slow something dangerous. If Esh-erdi were there, he would widen fractures. You can stop someone from being hurt by holding them in your arms. It’s how you can help, so it’s how you do help.”

“That’s true,” said Alden. “You’re saying something smart.”

“I try to speak thoughtfully.”

“No. Once you told me I should use you as bait for a mishnen.”

Stuart hissed at him. “Don’t say that so loud! My family doesn’t need to know every single thing that came out of my mouth that day!”

Second!

Sleyca

It's super nice for me when I can wake up refreshed in the morning and take a long leisurely look before posting. I hope you all enjoy!

Catherine

Wow, early chapter. Thank you!! :)

Justin

Thanks for the early chapter! I really enjoyed the discussion. I feel like it's good to have these two sharing stories and experiences with each other. It's probably really good mentally for both of them.

Heather White

Could you please provide the probably very useful Artonan word for << an obscenity implying extreme stupidity >>? Asking for a friend.

ImNotHere

early chapter for a good night Thanks Sleyca

Partha Peddi

Cool, early chapter.

Dundinho

Thank you for the chapter ❤️

Reege

Early! Thank you for the chapter!

Sphyrna

Thanks a lot for the early chapter! For anyone interested 82 degree farenheit are roughly 27,8 degree celsius.

Temp One

Bah gawd, thank you for the chapter!

Thomas Todd

Alden take the plunge and tell Stu, you need the support and he deserves to know that he can talk to you about the affixation even after it happens and you truly understand

SkySeeker

Soup! Thanks, Sleyca!

Alex

I think Alden would be fine with forced summons for emergencies. What he truly objects to is being force summoned for petty stuff.

Daydeus

The chapter was as delicious as usual, thank you!

Tungsten

yaaaaay

Wheels of Terror

The chapter's early! Wonder if anybody got primary this time. Anyway seems like the skip day helped, good!

SnuggleCat

Yesss! Surprise early chapter it feels like Christmas! Also, this was perfect. Alden needed this afternoon, I'm so glad

Calibri

I laughed out loud when Alden decided he had to show Stuart the “famous video about gokoratches” from Earth, especially in response to that situation. Thanks for the chapter! It’s everything I hoped for and more. ❤️

The Human

They usually feel like some of the best chapters, as well! (just my correlation)

Alex

Aldens night would not have been much easier regardless of when they left. He would've still gotten an emergency teleport to the embassy, he would've still refused to leave, everything would've still happened. I suppose maybe if he hadn't had to take the annoying dude to the trainstation he would've been finished with all the work a few minutes earlier and would've been in the flyer before the thieves came. Or maybe something else would've distracted him instead. For his classmates though, leaving a bit sooner or later and not being in the middle of the bridge when it happened would've made a bigger difference.

blinkmouse

Tyftc. I can see how difficult plotting our this chapter must have been. Reading again now lol

maledei

Looking forward to more conversations and learning what Stuart has to tell!

Uroš

I am hoping that Alden will tell Stuart about his situation - that he can feel his authority and cast spells and how he's dealing with the pain of having his authority twisted.

Listerine

If he’d left earlier or later, Alden wouldn’t have been summoned early so publicly, which would make his hiding easier

Heather White

That first section may have been the most earnest and charming discussion of friendship that I’ve ever read. It gave me both warm fuzzies and giggles. Their cross-cultural, cross-species friendship convinces me thoroughly, both with the effort it takes them to build bridges of understanding and how successful they are at it. Alden needed this time with his friend. Stuart needed this time with his friend. And I needed them to have it. It was a wonderful experience.

kapat

ahhhh new chapter ouut!!! edit: now I have actually read it and have more to say. this was a sweet chapter. I almost expect to enjoy it more when a few more chapters are out. I think I am too wrapped up in all the drama happening and wanted something ~dramatic~ to happen, like a big reveal about Alden being a wizard. but this is a type of chapter I tend to really enjoy, so I look forward to rereading it. I’m not used to being caught up when we get to slice-of-life stuff 😅 I think I subscribed to the Patreon right after all of the Waves chapters. I didn’t really think about Alden being summoned by Stu-art’h in the future and how that might impact him. their friendship has so many lies of omission and misconceptions. I wonder if Alden will ever tell Stu-art’h that Mother showed him Sina-art’h’s death. it seems like Stu-art’h wouldn’t be mad at him since it was Mother’s decision, but I wonder how that would change their relationship. it does make sense to me that the art’hs are really worried about Stu-art’h affixing if he literally needed a mind healer to deal with it. but also, he was /so/ young—of course he handled it worse than everyone else. I wonder if one day Stu-art’h will question the relationship between Avowed and Wizards. I hope so.

Alex

I dont know. I feel like his timer would've probably been the same regardless of where he was. It didn't change during the run like any of the others. And if they hadn't been on the bridge the class would've been all together, which would've been even more public. Also if all the embassy crap still happened, he would've still shown up to school on the Forsaken Son. Hiding his star is kinda useless at that point anyway.

Karim Saadi

I love < brewing > jokes in the < sour cauldron > of my thoughts. Pleaseeeee show us what Magic Stu is focusing on next chapter I wanna knoooow.

>“What’s weird is that you keep finding yourself in trouble,” said Stuart. “Carrying someone once you’re already there makes sense.” When I was a lot younger, I was growing up around a lot of religious people and I had already realized that I was not a religious person, and I had a lot of worries about that. How do you know if you're being a good person, if you don't have God to tell you how to be a good person? Everyone around me seemed to know what good was because they were TOLD what good was, by someone who was sort of by definition correct. I didn't have that, and it worried me a lot. What if I was wrong about what good was? What if I was accidentally doing terrible stuff and didn't even know it? It's funny to me that Stuart here has basically nailed down what eventually made me stop worrying so damn much. "It's weird that things are bad, but it's not weird that you do the best thing you can think of to make them less bad." He doesn't explicitly say it, but you can hear the "because you're a good person, you help" loud and clear.

Voidsong

Very wholesome. I think it was timed just right. 10/10

Alden and Stuart hanging out together are super adorable. I thought being awake at 2AM on a Monday is cursed but apparently it is blessed. Lol. Thank you for the early chapter. Rest well Sleyca!

Thanks for the early chapter!! The timezones usually screws me over, but this time it was perfect

this chapter is really high in my list of best chapter Wonderful and pleasing and healing and charming [When the story—as much of it as could be told—was finished, Alden was less drained than he would have expected to be if he’d known he was going to deliver a full account of the disaster. He wondered if there was some magic in the Rapport that made you feel more at ease.] It's called friendship and openness Alden, and it's what you need the most now

Josh Brooks

Woof. I was so worried Alden was gonna break, but this was so perfectly soothing for the two of them that I now want to go make some fried rice or something and stare at a sunset. I’m so pumped for Alden and Stuart!! Best bonded friends!!! Nothing will go wrong in the next chapter I’m so sure!!

Kim Enteiu

That was such a great chapter, and a perfect cut-off point 💖

Jerkface

Alden needs to go ahead and spill everything about having a bound skill and using magic. I don’t care if it’s stupid I just need to see how stuarth responds!

Baines

I mean Stu did just list off three nights of course they would be good people

Kbzzy

I wonder how large/different Gorgon’s authority would feel compared to the hynton

Rehan

This is great! I love watching Alden and Stuart interact :)

Astral Aion

Alden really should get some mental help from a mind healer

Matt V

What an excellent chapter! Their friendship is so heartwarming, but at the same time seems so fragile. They're both dancing around some very important topics. I think they're both level-headed enough that they'll talk out any differences of opinion that come up, and I don't think Stu will kick up a fuss about Alden when he learns of his wizardry, but it seems like his family absolutely would - especially given how much they're already in his business about a friendship with who they see as a regular avowed. I hope they're able to navigate everything without too much head/heart-ache. I can't wait to see this grand presentation of Stu's! I want to know what he's planning for his skill so bad, and I'm really curious how well it might synergize with BoaB. Alden always planned to be superhero support, and it doesn't get more superhero than hn'tyon. I absolutely expect that endgame of this story leads to Alden and Stu teaming up against Chaos in some way, and I think we're about to see our first glimpse of what that could look like. Can't wait for next chapter!

Does a mind healer have to see the memories to help ease the emotions tied to them? Is Alden avoiding a mind healer because he knows that it will reveal his authority sense secret? Even if there’s a patient-healer confidentiality clause, there’s probably an exception for something as ground breaking as human who can cast magic

Bryan Thew

ty for the soup

HJSecond

Great chapter! I really hope he tells Stu'arth about his affixation soon.

kapat

I think the problem is Stu’s loyalty to his family. I’m not sure if Alden has thought about that, but Stu-art’h clearly takes being a knight and that responsibility very seriously. I wonder if he would feel compelled to tell them.

GN

Thank you. A little time spent with a friend was clearly needed after all the chaos of the Sinker Sender.

kapat

ooooh this is a very interesting point!! I doubt Artonan healers would need to respect an Avowed patient’s privacy.

kapat

no don’t say that you’re absolutely jinxing it. this is like when they’re hanging out at the mall and Alden thinks he wouldn’t mind more moments like this and then everything goes to shit 😂

Thomas Todd

While possible I don't think so, Stuart seems really big on personal decisions and with the way his family have reacted to his own decision I can't see him being willing to violate Alden's trust like that. Especially if he finds out that Mother is aware and has allowed him to stay under the radar. Although there are a lot of things we don't know about Knights so maybe there is a social convention that would require him to tell them

kapat

lmaooo that’s so sad that Alden is so used to being lonely and bottled up that friendship is ✨ magic ✨ to him

ShanK

I got the impression that secrecy contracts protect from mind reading magic from what Esh-erdi said about the system Teleporting Alden if someone tried. I think Stuart is overlooking that Alden has no protection at all from Sways. Most guests are probably wizards or knights so that wouldn't be an issue for them but this could be a problem later on.

Alan Miller

I was kind of waiting for "Do you think you'll be able to cast after affixation?" but it sounds like the grand spell is for before that happens (since he'll presumably have less free authority for casting after it).

Obran

At some point in time Alden is really going to have to talk to his school staff and have them teach him scouting and reconnaissance techniques. I mean if he keeps being forced to run long distances carrying frozen people, he is going to have to have specialty training in how to figure out the optimal path forward, to gauge difficulty and maneuver terrain.

Eich8noe

I bet in ancient times someone once build a house out of colorful rocks and a month later it came crushing down, thus they were named husenods. Do not build houses ot auf them.

Hallow

Thanks for the chapter!

william wallace

His friendship with Stuart is irrationally wholesome. I love it.

Obran

Force him to carry a few drones with him at all times or have him take a course called “S.O.S.’s, Smoke Signals, and Writing HELP with Rocks and Foliage 101."

Heather White

Yes, if Stuart knows, it could really help him. He might not want to talk to his family about his struggles after affixation because of how they’ve been judging his decision. But if he knows that Alden has felt the same pain, that would give him someone safe to talk to about it. He’s going to need that support.

AFK37115

Thanks for the chapter, I love it!! their friendship is so wholesome !

"if they had [dared] to say something so [an obscenity implying extreme stupidity] about your character I would have called upon her to describe your every wound to them in detail until they felt shame.” Awesome. The sheer righteous fury on behalf of a friend. Also, trying to picture the scene made me laugh out loud. Tell em Stu!

Michael

Yes, that would be very useful to know. For... scientific purposes, of course. Definitely not so I can cuss out stupid people without them realizing.

Michael

Some very wholesome slice of life there. Much appreciated.

Nathan Rice

Alden has had bad experiences with counselors so I get his reticence. But he really really needs what Stu is offering.

Cyrus McEnnis

Stu's so damn << frettingly wholesome >>. He's doing his utmost to make his friend feel welcome and whole, and the little gokoratch keeps teasing him in response! Alden is such a << humorous bully >>!

TDarwin

This was a wonderful chapter! Thank you so much!

Guus van der Borg

I've mentioned this before, but I love the semi-formality of Alden and Stu's discussions. In this chapter there was another gem of that kind. When Stu didn't just make an empty promise, but gave a well-reasoned and still considerate reason why he could not make such a promise. And Alden, like a rational person, accepting that reason. Beautiful!

John D Jones

I'm really gonna need to know the Artonan word-phrase for << an obscenity implying extreme stupidity >>. For that matter, I still want to know the Artonan word-phrase for << grab greedy like a toddler >>.

axel jensen

the soup is so good, i need some more

glow

Aw I was hoping Alden would tell Stu about being a wizard. It's still possible, I guess. Need to ease into it. Maybe when Stuart is showing off his planned skill?

Phlinn

I was reading through a collection o Sleyca's comments recently. She was worried about presenting a therapy session correctly, and it struck me that mind healer is to therapist as a healer is to surgeon. It's possible that a mind healers treatment may be more like drinking the sap of your birth tree than like a therapist session.

Christine

I mean, I absolutely think a large part of it is friendship and openness. But I also wouldn't be surprised if the magical trees in those woods have an inner-peace inducing effect, considering that it's where Knights go to affix.

Matt DiMeo

I suspect the spell, which he can’t always succeed at and which takes a long time to cast manually, might *be* what he plans to affix. Knights may do their own affixations, as opposed to avowed having the system do it.

JustMe

Early souppp, thank youu

Amber Gregory

A beautiful day at the rapport. A very special friendship in the making. I feel restored as well.

Cyrus McEnnis

I dunno, Nathan. An evening spent catching lightning bugs & putting them in a jar, and then releasing them in the morning while talking to a friend feels pretty therapeutic to me. Especially given what Alden keeps going through & his lack of access to Swayner Boe's care & attention.

Nathan Rice

To me, it feels like Alden is still on the edge of snapping. He's enjoying his time with Stu as an escape that puts some distance between himself and what happened with the Sinker Sender. But that's not really Alden's central emotional problem. It's the trauma of his bound authority, and his fears about being exposed as one who can feel that trauma. Surely an Artonan therapist has some kind of magical client privilege situation that would let Alden actually open up.

Curtis

I agree this spell is almost certainly the one he plans to affix. However, I think he still needs Mother to do it. The level of unimaginable pain of affixation is such that I don't think anyone could possibly affix themselves.

Emily Gurnavage

For real, though. Theres a whole book worth of good reasons why he cant talk about it on Earth, but the Triplanets dont give a *fuck* about what Earth's governments might care about the things Alden divulges in counseling. Stu's over here offering to hook him up with the best counselor that the leader of the entire known universe was able to find - and Alden says nope im good. . Maybe one day Stu will meet his roommates and everyone will stage an intervention and make him get help.

SkySeeker

Agreed, but I think you may have gotten some of the vowels mixed up in your last sentence. Unless that is part of the joke, and I just didn't get it.

Charlie

1. Earth has stick bugs which, if you didn't know about them, would seem strange. 2. Now is the time to place bets on what we think Stu’s skill will do. 3. If Stu knew about Gorgon's bestowal to Alden, would he compel Alden to use it to aid what Gorgon understood to be his immortal enemies? 4. Stu'Arth feels that "Brute" is too broad a category, but Artonans call Alden "Alden Rey'bt" so clearly "Rey'bt" is a known category of Avowed. Are Brutes typically further divided into categories? 4.a. Are Knights who take Rabbit skills known as "Rey'bt Knights"? That seems a little demeaning for a stalwart warrior against chaos.

Guus van der Borg

Also, I'm getting more and more convinced that Stu does not have the split mind thing that all/most other artonans have. There have been several hints (at least, what I think are hints). It was explicitly mentioned that Stu never does the split eyes thing, his classmates and peers seem to think there is something wrong with him that is implied to go beyond him just being a bit odd, and now in this chapter it is said that the Primary has had multiple mind experts examine him in his youth. I think he was born with a single mind, probably (almost) exactly like a human. And I bet his family considers this another reason why Stu won't be able to handle afixation. Which will give it an extra strong impact when Alden reveals that he can handle it well enough without a split mind. It might even be another reason why Mother pushed them to be friends.

Ryan

It occurs to me that Alden might not get as much blowback as you would expect for being a human avowed wizard (fake knight). If you have a power that will scale to cutting a moon in half, you're pretty damn scary. But if your power just let's you bear other's suffering and injuries (plus keeping them safe) AND it only works with anothers permission, you are not so scary ...

Alibhai

Tyftc! All the warm and fuzzy feelings.~ I enjoy the talks between these two. You can feel the friendship. A truly genuine attempt by both to form a deep bond. I am sure they both will help each other on their future journeys. That's why I am kinda glad there weren't any dramatic reveals in this chapter.

Marcus Rodriguez

Until this chapter, I was wondering if Stuart was not just insanely powerful for a wizard child and it was giving him issues.

Guus van der Borg

And what do we consider the odds are that someone has actually been silently judging Alden the whole day? Judging if the human avowed is a worthy friend to Stu? I don't think they will, but I also wouldn't put it past them...

JustMe

I loved this chapter so much. Stu truly is the secret soup ingredient

Nathan

Thanks!

BelligerentGnu

Cannot wait for a) conversations with Stuart's family and b) Alden confessing he has free authority.

zdm

I strongly desire the reaction video of Stu watching Stinky Gokaratch to be the advent of a whole category of artonan reaction videos.

VP

Yeah, we know skills are loosely based on spells. Joe mentioned he could do the freeze effect that Alden could, but he would need different ones for different situations and it would take a lot longer. Stu's spell might be doable as a spell, but as he mentioned, it takes time and might fail. Having it as a skill would make it all easier and more reliable

Ryan Nguyen

It really depends on how well the people will be informed. Based on everything up until now, Alden might not be able split planets with BoB, but take its abilities to logical extremes. Imagine his preservations growing stronger with less effort, with greater ranges. Preserve entire groups of people, structures, cities? Unbreakable objections, immunity to all projectiles launched at him, things like that.

ChoWingGom

Thank you for the chapter!

Max

Every ability in the system was once a spell or is derived from one, especially the knight abilities. This may just be the original spell. Do you remember when Mother explained why Bearer of all Burdens is special? It's one of the few knight abilities in the system which are characterised by having no limit.

Max

I am a bit disappointed Alden did not reveal that he knows what Stu'arth is about to go through. He should've revealed his Auriad.

zdm

Speaking as someone who has had a few different therapists, I feel almost anything that falls into the realm of a conversation would feel believable to me. Therapists have different styles, and folks connect over different things. That connection is what matters in the relationship, though. At least, that's been my experience.

denatured

I imagine not. The gremlins' rules and the skill rules are different. The skill allows the bugs to be entrusted by another because they aren't sapient, but the gremlin won't allow them to be eaten because they didn't entrust themselves.

Guus van der Borg

It might not be Stuart's choice though. One of the very first things Mother told us about knights is that knights are only allowed to become as powerful as they are because they've bound themselves with magical oaths to always act in the interest of the triplanets. It may very well be that part of those oaths are to not allow any knights to NOT be under oath. Stu might be forced to out Alden to the rest of the nights by magical contract.

Ryan

Haha you have a point. They would still need to have given permission, so groups is less of a concern. The power will quickly grow into something rendering him near complete protection from attacks. Once he can entrust and preserve himself, the protection may be near complete. A long, invincible piece of rope could cause some serious problems, even with his current restrictions

Matt DiMeo

Stuart may be obligated by oath to rat him out. It would be foolish.

Clint

BoaB is one of the few *Avowed* abilities that has no limit. All knight abilities have no limit (or at least their first-affixation core skill has no limit. They might affix other things later.) It's one of the requirements.

Jean

Typo patrol: “Zansees?” Alden tried the new word out. -- the Z isn't italics like the rest of the word “I think….before then most of them may have assumed I was still <> for my mistakes on the day we met. -- add a space after ellipsis again “If we’d just left a few minutes later or earlier, my night would have been a lot easier,” said Alden. -- stray line break in the middle of 'easier' Lovely chapter, and a nice release of tension for a change for Alden, definitely.

Curtis

Alden has noticed Stuart doesn't do the split-eye thing, however (from Chapter 71): "He was fairly sure the other boy could split his focus like other Artonans, since he’d been able to carry on a conversation while hand-casting on his metal block for the spell ring".

Matt DiMeo

I was under the impression he’s a gifted caster, which would argue against a two-minds disability. But it’ possible.

Max

For one, I do not think so. Second, it's not as if it's ACTUALLY illegal. Alden just doesn't want to deal with the implications but it's not actually a problem apart from maybe causing him more stress and even that is just Alden assuming that it might. He has no idea what would happen but it's fairly clear from all of Artonan culture so far that he certainly wouldn't be punished for it. So I wouldn't say it's foolish. It's just trusting in a friend.

VP

Stuart always looked like he was staring off into space when he accessed information through the eye rings. Alden had seen him do it several times during their previous, very long conversation. Most often to look up the English swear words Alden had been using to enforce casualness. It’s unusual that he doesn’t do the split-eye thing much. In fact, now that he was thinking about it, Alden couldn’t remember if he’d ever seen Stuart do it. He was fairly sure the other boy could split his focus like other Artonans, since he’d been able to carry on a conversation while hand-casting on his metal block for the spell ring. Maybe he didn’t like double visuals?

Guus van der Borg

@Curtis I still think that that part might be a wrong assumption of Alden, and that Stu is simply proficient enough of a caster that he can do whatever he's doing to that cube whilst holding a conversation.

VP

With the context added, I think it makes it more likely that he can't. I can do basic things with my hands and hold a convo

Eich8noe

That my friend may very well be the case since it's quite late here and english is my second language. "hus" is a very old word that can be used to discribe a House, thus my addled brain made a connection between "husenod" and "House, not" if you throw enough language drift at it one could reason that the name "husenots" is actually a warning to not build a House out of these nice colourful stones some Artonan primogenitor told another over some bewerage ages ago.

VP

And from Artonan Conversations we know he could give himself a task to keep himself from being too impassioned and he asked Lute to wait until he could dedicate time to think of an answer. If he had double think, he would have been able to start thinking on how to translate dickwad and get offended at the cushions at the same time

denatured

My guess is that he will when he finds out what Stu needed the mind healer for, and why his family thinks he'll die. Gosh what's the etiquette over theory crafting in the comments? What if I have a theory and it turns out to be a spoiler? Edit: someone else shares my theory and already commented, there's my get-out-of jail free card

Clint

Unfortunately, the Triplanets would definitely give a metric fuckton of fucks about Alden's ability to sense his authority. The Artonans are going to freak out about it. There's a non-zero chance of one wizard faction attempting to exterminate all humans as a response. (The faction that's terrified of Avowed *before* learning that at least one of them can grow as powerful as a knight.) Alden *should* talk to Stu about it, for both their sakes, but he's not wrong to worry about letting Artonans (other than Kiv-bee) learn about it.

Guus van der Borg

@Matt I don't think those points argue against each other. Not having a split mind will make certain spells impossible, but that does not mean he can't be exceptionally good at the ones that ARE possible. In fact, having a 'fused' mind might actually make him better at it, as he can focus his whole mind on the task. Having a 'fused' mind might even be some sort of equivalent of savant syndrome to artonans. Worse at/incapable of some things, incredibly good at others.

Clint

It sounds like Stu's spell is long and involved. Lots of opportunity for Stu to realize that Alden is watching the actual casting of the spell with his Authority and not just watching Stu wave his hands and chant things. If Alden's going to talk about it, I think it probably has to come *after* they have the conversation about why Stu's family thinks affixation will kill him, which they're still easing their way into.

Max

I personally wouldn't care since it's still just a theory and more often than not those aren't true. I also assumed that the trauma in his youth was his sister or whatever killing herself in that big ceremony for depressed knights. You know, the memory Mother showed Alden.

denatured

Can't agree with this comment hard enough with just a like button. Mother is a schemy schemer.

Clint

I'm pretty sure future-Alden would be able to rip a moon in half by "catching" and preserving only half of it.

VP

If he preserved some in a small enough amount to be swallowed without the original intention of swallowing them, then once preserved he could swallow them and unpreserve them in his stomach

Nathan Rice

I think we don't know enough yet to say. Maybe the faction that fears Avowed fears what they will do once it becomes widespread knowledge about what really causes chaos. Or maybe they just dislike putting the powers of knights in the hands of those who don't feel the burden of them. Maybe they would be relieved that an Avowed can actually be brought closer to being a proper knight and wizard. Joe implies that there are some wizards who would wish Alden out of the way just for having one of the original 300 uncapped skills, not being a knight at all. So yeah, Alden needs to be careful. But you'd think a therapist under contract would be a safe person to tell.

Clint

Now that we've seen Drusi-otta, I'd assume there are invisible votaries keeping an eye on the family, and especially on Stu.

denatured

I wonder if it's possible for him to target himself now that he can feel his authority. Or if that's like trying to stare into your own eyes without a mirror.

Mack

Hard disagree here. I don't think he should have shared that yet.

Ryan

Perhaps. His power is charged with a Purpose, and is at it's best when being used to protect things, so I bet it would be bad at damaging a moon unless (for instance) it was being done to protect something

John D Jones

@ Guus van der Borg Very low. Alden received a Commendation from Alis-art'h for the many wounds and injuries he incurred in the course of saving Kibv-ee. I think we can take Stu at his word on how his family views that. The person being silently (and not so silently) judged here is Stu. I think the family's position is something like "This poor brave rhey-b't boy suffered horrible injury and trauma in the course of protecting the child, Kibv-ee from Chaos. He did that despite having no obligation to her. We don't want Alden the Rhey-b't child to suffer even more grief and trauma when Stu, his friend, Affixes and then has himself killed when he cannot handle the agony of Affixation."

Guus van der Borg

Good point. Much more likely. Still, whether it's Stu that's being watched or Alden, them being watched will put a damper on all the people going 'Alden should tell him everything already.' Stu can probably be trusted (as long as he's not under oath to rat out any knights not under oath), but remember folks, the walls have ears. Stu even (sort of) mentions as much when he tells Alden not to talk about his embarrassing moments too loud.

Signspace

*Yet*, there is still time, we have a whole grandiose scene where Stuart shows Alden the Spell he intends to affix, it seems like that might be an opportune time for divulging that particular secret. I am definitely of the opinion that he will, they have quite a lot they can learn from each other, Alden *really* needs an Artonan who knows, so that they can teach him.

denatured

I don't think he was born with his disability. He says "injury" is the wrong word but if it's one others have used, that implies a causal event. My very random guess is maybe Stuart had a very bad case of thetet fever. Alden got a stray tablet to inoculate against it for no discernable reason right after taking Stu to get surgery after the mishnen event that we have totally put behind us.

Guus van der Borg

Whether he SHOULD swallow metallic-looking alien bugs is, of course, a different question altogether. :)

ImNotHere

Also we know now why Stu reacted so strongly when he realised that Alden was his Guest the first time

Michael Telford

In response to comments, I’m certain any of the knights or Stu would be happy to get a small secrecy tattoo to re assure Alden if he truly wanted to talk. Heck Privacy of the House probably includes guests secrets as well. Alden just doesn’t want to.

Billy Corcoran

Drusi-otta is imo like 95%+ watching, just because I think the writing structure demands it. You have an invisible artonan watcher who is yet to do anything, and has been around juuuuust long enough for most readers to forget she exists. Why? She's also assured Alden she can follow him anywhere, then Alden goes somewhere that would be unusually difficult to visit. It would be a big twist for her to appear, so I think she will.

Jeff Wells

All Avowed have free authority, it builds up until they level and re-bind it. That was why Joe advised waiting as long as possible before leveling up - more free authority available to be bound when you level results in stronger choices available, because what "shape" your authority can be bound to is directly determined by how much free authority you have to bind up. Alden is unique because he can feel and use that free authority to cast spells, which is what wizards and Knights do.

Mehmet ali Reyhan

Sleyca quick question if someone used eye of a thousand instance's bad half but used a chainer skill to make it shorter for a stronger effect would that make the person extra blind or would it change nothing ?

Matt DiMeo

We already know from Joe that just having a 300 skill could cause some panicky wizard to arrange your death. And we also know that wizards can’t get affixed without binding oaths to not harm the triplanets. And we *just* saw Stuart say he might have to favor his own oaths over friendship. It doesn’t have to be illegal to ruin what remains of Alden’s intensity 4 life. I think you’re underestimating the potential danger here. By a lot.

Kbzzy

What if alden never publicly reveals his knight status? What if he takes on something like a shadow hynton status where only Stu knows and summons him to do knightly things, and alden never gets widespread recognition?

DAK

I like this theory. Stuart’s earlier admission that he had hallucinations as a kid, and now the fact that there was an extensive search for mind healers implies Stu had some kind of neuropsychiatric issue complicated enough to either stump most healers or that it required a drastic enough treatment that the Primary needed every second opinion in the known universe prior to being willing to put his son through it. Something on the order of a hemilobotomy/mindotomy would certainly qualify. I wonder once this is all sorted out and Stu and Alden do the not-a-marriage, break yourselves esvulgivnas thing if that would constitute a magical closeness tight enough to coordinate the two-minds portion of magic.

Max

For one, only the knight's reaction is really important. And they seem like they'd be cool with it. Of course the intensity might rise but c'mon that's happening either way. I wouldn't read this novel if I didn't anticipate it. Also I wouldn't necessarily speak of danger in these circumstances. Just maybe an undesirable outcome. At worst he'd have to become a knight which isn't that bad.

Michael Telford

I really want him to out himself to the knights. I think they will understand his position AND his desire to have a normal life for a while. I also think they would be happy to shield him from any political issues. I hope Alden chooses trust, I don’t want Alden to affix on earth alone.

HumbleBee

They should schedule in watching Kibby-videos

SkySeeker

Oh, no, I got the original pun, and thought it rather clever. I was just wondering if you might speak German, since you wrote "auf" instead of "of" in the last sentence.

William Forrest

I'm not sure I agree with this take; though, it seems to be a common one (and certainly possible). Stuart seems like he would WANT to keep Alden's secret, but, much like his desire to not summon Alden without permission, he might find himself having to do what he thinks is best for the tri-planets rather than what is desired by his friend. The sad thing is, while the knights may not keep his secret, I expect they would still go out of their way to aid and support him in myriad ways. I expect they would try to help him find peace and joy much of the time. I strongly doubt they would take him from his planet against his will or allow him to be confined to Anesidora should he (for example) want to visit his aunt. He would be another knight to help hold back the forces of chaos. They need him relatively happy even if it's only so that he doesn't kill himself to escape his chronic pain and endless cycles of literal soul rending acute pain.

Jim

Oh God, I loved this chapter. Thank you! Edit Suggestion: - k’rethkan very similar to the ones he’d eaten on Artona II. Alden was on Artona III

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

The camaraderie of celebrants during the entrance exams must have equaled let's summon a mishen. Poor Stu! You let yourself relax JUST ONCE, and you end up with your foot bitten off! Now he's afraid to go to anymore parties incase he relaxes too much and allows his judgement to become impaired.

Jim

@Max I think you answered your own question: Alden just doesn't want to deal with the implications. When he's ready, I'm sure Stu'art'h will be one of the first to know. Alden just isn't ready.

NameGame

Ketchup doesn't have to be made with tomatoes. For example, you can make mushroom ketchup. It's not particularly difficult, recipes are available online. It can be made with other stuff, too. Thanks for the chapter!

Jeremy Goldberg

I’m looking forward to Alden’s wizardness becoming known too, but I think Alden just learned a really good reason to keep it to himself for a little while longer. Stu is willing to sacrifice everything for the safety of the mother planet, including Alden. If Stu feels obligated to summon Alden against his will when Alden is the best tool for the job, it might follow that Stu would feel obligated to tell the knights exactly what kind of tool Alden is, so that they could also summon him if needed.

Clint

Heck, they'd probably decide that he had the right to invite guests to the Rapport, including Boe and his aunt.

Clint

It would probably get increasingly difficult to hide how much stronger his skill is than what his "sheet" shows. But he could do it, with Mother's help and that of the family Art'h.

Obran

Another consideration when telling Stuart about his secret magic use is what if Stuart finds out later. Will he feel betrayed if he doesn't know now? Is there any chance that Stuart, Lute, and Alden could hang out one afternoon in some exotic capital city that is welcoming to both Word Chains and Knight trainees? Maybe over a cup o we’vee? I think that Lute's frivolousness might irritate Stuart's seriousness, though. Oil and water and all that.

Josh Delgado42

Thank you for the chapter! It's fascinating to see not just how much of a foil Boe and Stuart are but also how similar Alden and Stuart are. At the moment, both Alden and Stuart don't have anyone else they can really open up to, and this trip is so good for them. I'm loving the casual alien scenery (tangled up dandelion is a delightfully alien concept) and the great translations (thought cauldron is an awesome name for a brain). It's amazing how big Alden's vocabulary is, and amusing to see how the system translates insults. I'm curious if the trauma that Stuart faced in the past was his sister (and thus the source of his mourning name). It was kind of Stuart to offer to help. And telling to see that the Primary personally interviewed the top specialists. Stuart's family truly does care for him, which is lovely to see in one of he most powerful families. It seems like this visit is shaping up to be immensely good for both Alden and Stuart as they confide in one another. I'm glad as they definitely both need it.

sketerpot

Additionally, Joe’s recommendation is blackmailing the System not to stunt his progression path: either offer something good enough that Alden will affix voluntarily, or spend a big chunk of the ethics budget on forcing the matter.

Jeff Scott

The suspense is killing me, I cannot wait until he tells Stu that he's already technically a Knight, to show him his auriad and learn spells from him, and most importantly to share in the pain of affixing. It would probably help Stu a lot to hear that even his new human friend has survived the process.

Poiuy

I love how you write a serious, deep, thoughtful chapter that gives me all sorts of conflicting feels and then end it with a line that just puts a smile on my face.

sketerpot

Mother described Sina’s death as “the worst moment of his life,” in chapter 62, which certainly points in that direction.

Poiuy

But there’s a reason it’s called “tomato ketchup”

Bbyh

He’ll yeah early soup

John D Jones

@ Obran Alden has complained several times that Celena North doesn't offer any wilderness survival courses.

Christine

I think Evul-art'h contacted Alden and dramatically told him he may never talk to Stu-art'h again in order to gauge Alden's attachment to Stu-art'h. And obviously Alden's stunned/disturbed look was satisfactory enough to earn her approval, since she weighed in Alden's favor for the family discussion. Probably some people had already put this together, since she did say she called him to "get a closer look", but I didn't think of this possibility 'til Stu-art'h said that Evul confirmed that Stu-art'h and Alden's friendship was legitimate. What a great older sister, but what bad timing for Alden.

Andrew Simpson

This was mega sweet and very appreciated. I'm excited for Alden to tell Stu he's also a wizard/avowed.

Andrew Simpson

Part of me is so worried that sleyca is just fuckin with us and Alden won't tell anyone anything for 90 more chapters.

William Johnson

They are adorable, and I love their developing friendship. I feel like this is a really good opportunity for Alden to tell Stuart about his wizardness, but also it would make sense if he was too nervous to actually do so. But I hope he does, it would be a great gesture of trust and respect and would probably save a lot of drama down the road.

Bbyh

Banana ketchup will haunt my dreams until I try it

Obran

I’m not talking about survival. That is like making houses out of a spare tarp, lighting fires, and eating bugs.

Kirvin

He doesn't need to do that now I think. Remember that Mother showed him the whole progression path for BoaB and let him pick the upgrades he wanted from it, and I would imagine that his future affixations will be the same.

Michael Lambus

I love these calm moments as much as the tense stressful moments perhaps even more

Christine

@William Forrest, I agree with what you are saying, but I feel the need to list the negatives to Alden coming out to the knights. (I'm sure you already considered them!) I agree that the Knights would want to support Alden. However, I also think that part of that support would be giving Alden a decent education, and I don't think CNH would meet their standards. I can even imagine a scenario where Alden gets to stay on Earth and receive private tutoring, but it would still set him apart from his peers. The knights wouldn't chuck Alden right into chaos situations, but Alden probably wouldn't get to continue his quiet life on Earth. That's besides the fact that if Alden's Authority sense became public knowledge, it would undoubtedly cause a political uproar, with Alden at the center. I think the Knights would try to protect Alden from the worst of it, but it would still be very stressful. Additionally, Alden publicly being the first human knight would change his relationships with all other humans except Boe. Alden was nervous to tell his classmates about his commendation; being a wizard is astronomically more shocking. Alden needs more time to build his relationships with his Anesidora friends, so that when his knighthood comes out his new friendships can survive it.

Desert Yeti

Request: Could you add these notes to the epub as well? They're really nice to have. Also, I'd love to live somewhere 82F, 27.8C, in the summer. Today it was 104F (40C) here. I envy Alden. Stu must be cold, though. Nice to see Alden decompressing and finally feeling a sense of normality. I think he's going to become much more accustomed to the Rapport than Anesidora. How long until the Rapport feels less like a visit or vacation and more like a welcome home? Good job Stu on offering the mind-healer. I wonder now if Alden will reveal his situation to Stu. The weaving of friendship might require disclosing a secret. Alden is also unaware of the actual power dynamic and rank difference between him and Stu, which has helped their friendship. By the time he truly understands it, it won't really affect him anymore (because I only think he'll understand it after he comes out as a sort of knight and sees the tremendous deference and respect given to them).

Desert Yeti

Yeah. I worry that Stu will see not disclosing the fact that Alden is a functional knight as a betrayal of trust.

Desert Yeti

I can see that on Earth. I can't see Stu keeping a secret that could save lives from his family. Alden could be an anomaly or he could lead to an entirely new way of dealing with the human species, as well as just being a knight with the ability to preserve things from chaos.

Christine

I actually think it's a great idea - just not with bugs, gross! Has Alden tried preserving an edible animal yet? If he can preserve a live animal, and then un-preserve it and eat it, then that would show his gremlin that animal is not a thinking being. I recommend fish, I would say they are the likeliest to be a non-sapient creature that is still tasty. Then Alden could transition to being pesketarian!

Desert Yeti

For now, Alden can only accept a burden from others. I expect with conceptual growth (like we saw with the tennis balls) he will gain the ability to assume burdens on his own. And nothing says that he can't blast a mountain to bits with his wizard side eventually.

Christine

I worry about Alden affixing on Earth. I hope Mother steps in and does it instead. The Earth system is a manipulative, sneaky little shit, I don't trust it to give Alden the best options/advice.

John D Jones

@ Christine As Alden noted to Zeridee, Evul doesn't really give a crap about him. She wants his friendship with Stu-art'h to continue for Stu

Christine

Drusi-otta has done something - she has protected Alden from the wooden projectiles of his immature classmates! But honestly, I think it's unlikely she's still watching. I doubt it's a simple matter to spy on the Art'h family in the First Rapport, even if you are a votary. Plus, I thought Esh said she would watch Alden until he returned to Matadero, not forever. Esh-erdi may have some peeping-Tom issues, but this would be a world too far. I do fully expect some political drama when Alden returns to Earth though, and I hope Drusi-otta is involved then. But wouldn't it be even more hilarious if she never shows up on screen, and instead calls Esh to deal with it? Let Drusi-otta maintain her mysterious facade!

Christine

Great theory! I hope it is true, because I absolutely love the idea of Alden being driven to speak up about his authority-sense in order to comfort Stu. My read is that Alden is still not ready to share that yet, but our guarded, self-sacrificing boy with a bleeding heart would probably spill his secret for a friend in need.

Christine

What brought up the comment about stick bugs? The Zansees reminded me of fireflies; as a kid we used to catch them in the evenings and then release them after an hour or so. I hope the Zansees light up at night!

Sunden

What an amazing, wholesome chapter. Their friendship is only beginning but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :) Unfortunately, I don't think Alden will be able to tell Stuart his secret now... Stuart mentioned taking oaths to act "for the good of the Triplanets". He might be bound to report Alden even if he didn't want to, if he considers that inline with his oath. There's no way Alden missed that.

Charlie

Alden mentioning that Earth didn't have animals that pretended to be rocks for days on end. We have animals that pretend to be other things!

Alex Scriber

Yay for update! Some of these chapter titles seem so random at first, but they always end up making sense. I’m excited to read the chapter and find out what’s up with these water bugs.

Christine

Totally agree; she was pretty damn inconsiderate to hang up on Alden without giving an explanation after she saw his reaction. Stu was right to be outraged at her!

Llainway

Thanks Sleyca! Great to see Alden relax and unwind with his friend!

Alex Scriber

Maaaaaybe? On the other hand, compulsory summoning is pretty awful. Added to which, every time Alden has been summoned somewhere it has ended in a disaster. It would be odd if Alden didn’t have complicated feelings about summonings.

Tadas

I love Stu so much, his earnestness is so endearing. I was waiting for Stu chapter since the meme song and it didn't disappoint.

ppbrro

I wonder if Mother will show up, maybe night time when he is alone in his cabin thingy? Im really curious how that is going to play out

Charlie

My understanding was that when Stu was talking to Alden he was focusing his entire mind on him the way he did when trying not to pass out due to fish pain. It's something both Esh and Zeridee did as well - and I think it's indicative of "I'm being entirely present with you in this moment" from an Artonan perspective. I suspect Stu's mind healer was for watching the ritualistic death of his sister.

Brell

I suspect we'll see Stu affix and be absolutely shattered by the pain and isolation. He will look to Alden with the horrible realization that a human could never understand what he was going through. Then Alden looks at him, lights a candle, and says quite sincerely and undersandingly, that he knows.

Brell

Alden is planning to reveal his knighthood to Stu. His promise that Stu never summon him against his will is fundamental to this. He doesn't want to be summoned to Bear Stu's pain of affixation.

maledei

Yeah he would have to ask for a privacy tattoo first...

wakeuptheresbacon

I've been going through old Stu-art'h chapters and contextualizing his behavior ("he just flails around and shouts a lot about how he can endure more pain", "My contemplations on the nature of my ignorance and failures are complete, so I told a healer to fix the burning pains I’ve been enduring for more than eight months") with his apparent desire to prove himself able to endure affixation. Adding that to the other parts of his backstory revealed lately… I didn't think much about Stu-art'h before the last few chapters, but now I have never been so emotionally attached to a character in fiction before as I am with Stu. He is my new favorite character in this novel (topping Alden and Lute)

Sunden

I don't think a privacy tattoo would work. Individual contracts don't override /the/ Contract. Stuarts Oath would probably take precedence.

Sirichai

I hope Alden never tells Stu that he's a pseudo-knight. I think Stuart would get excited and think the most natural thing would be for Alden to pursue actually becoming a knight. He would get ideas of having Alden somehow join his same knight group, living full time on Artona I. He would imagine having Alden there at his side going through the same things that he is: being super supportive to one another through their hardship. Then he would be heartbroken when Alden explains how he doesn't actually want to become a knight. To Stuart the idea of going through the painful affixation process without taking the honor and responsibilities of true knighthood would be unfathomable. This would result in hurt feelings on both sides and their friendship would suffer. Yes it would be exciting for Alden to tell him, but no it would not be good for either character for that secret to be revealed.

Heather White

Actually, in this chapter Stuart says that his father interviewed a bunch of mind healers on Stuart’s behalf, not that Stuart himself saw a bunch of different healers. I read that to mean that when the Primary wanted Stuart to see a mind healer, he interviewed a bunch of highly recommended ones so he could choose the best one for Stuart.

JennP

Banana ketchup is pretty good. It doesn't taste like bananas, it's just sweeter than tomato ketchup. Don't be afraid.

Yaboku

I don't really get why you write Stu'Arth as Stuart. That's not his name. Even if Alden called him that, i would still think that naming him correctly would be better. It's not a hard name to pronounce so the unbiased observer who is not a human should not be needing to use "human" or really American names. Feels similarly stupid as "english" names for Chinese or Korean people.

Sunden

I don't think Alden is going to tell Stu anymore. Too risky. Stu might have to turn him in even if he doesn't want to because of his oaths.

Sunden

I think the secret will get out /eventually/ but I agree that telling Stuart now or on this trip is not the best idea for Alden.

Sunden

Alden seems to call Artonans he's very close with by human names. He turned Kivb-ee into Kibby, and he calls Stu-art'h by Stuart.

QY

"Alden rescued his ash-seasoned slice before Stuart could blow on the rock again and turn it into actual ash." lmao

Francis

Wow, what a wonderful, chunky chapter! Thanks so much Sleyca, the dialogue was incredible.

Francis

"And now he had brought home a B-rank Rabbit from Earth, one who it probably looked like he had fixated on after a bizarre limb-loss incident." How does this author manage to make you laugh and them just after that get tears in your eyes?

Francis

I also can't imagine she wouldn't want to have a chat before he leaves..

QY

"Which was minimizing his contribution. He was definitely the first most enthusiastic member of the group when it came to the cannibalistic flapping. That commenter was just sucking up to Astrid." lolol Alden being proud/sure of his imput in the gokoratching song was hilarious

Francis

Problem is that Sleyca probably wants to write about Alden telling him, but since her style is to follow the characters' personalities, that might not be possible. I think of Alden as a pragmatist and an empath. He does not share things about himself unless it is either necessary or if it would greatly help the other person. And sharing that he is a wizard would accomplish neither. Stu didn't say he is scared or needs reassurance. Alden saying he will be his friend regardless of what happens was all the assurance he needed.

Francis

Guus is right, Stu could still be doing multiple things even with a one-mind focus. Because Alden has been doing it more and more since he made the perception alterations. Stu would've had access to a lot more alterations and could have a single focus, but be very good at multitasking. He could switch between tasks so fast that he doesn't interrupt his casting while talking for example

Francis

Good point. A mind healer might be scary in the same way as a Sway is

Anita

I'm not sure that's feasible. Even mother doesn't think Alden can keep the secret indefinitely. And stu might feel betrayed if he learned from someone else. Maybe Alden could confide in him if not this trip , then in December before his affixation. I can see Alden telling him in December ' when you wake up in the middle of the night because your unbound authority is scratching at the chains and your bound authority is trying to rip them apart and everything you are is in agony, call me. We can talk all night and i will try and take your mind off of it.

Guus van der Borg

@DAK, I had also wondered that last bit. If they share minds they can maybe cast the two-mind spells together. That would be cool. ...and incredibly anime. Though I bet that if that happens, it will be a loooong way into the story. I don't think they will do the breaking anytime soon.

maledei

Mother IS the contract. She offered the quiet rabbit secret in the first place. Stuart would have to override her secrecy too.

It is not the knights that must take an oath before affixing, it's the Artonans. C60[When you have an authority sense and you bind a skill, your power can rapidly snowball. Especially if you work at. It’s why even Artonans can’t affix without swearing oaths that prevent them from harming the Triplanets.] The Avowed that develop an authority sense are already under the "Interdimensional Warrior’s Contract". C112[Earth became an Artonan resource world, with all the accompanying rights, privileges, and responsibilities afforded by that designation.[...] As part of this alliance,” the voice continued quietly, “Earth is required to deliver a number of suitable individuals into contractual servitude. [...]Ultimately, however, you may not refuse to serve.”] Following the wording of the selection speech, there is a relation of servitude with the avowed. And the contract most probably include a clause of non agression towards the Artonans and their interests

puppy0cam

There's something to be said that I remember Lute's psycho boss's name better than I remember the primary's name. In my defense though, we only found out the latter last chapter.

AFK37115

it is a nickname, and he only does that with friends (Kibby and Stuart), he uses their correct names in serious moments

Yaboku

Yes. Pretty sure it's not only him btw. When he told others Stu'Arths name they also called him Stuart. But that is my point. The narrator is not Alden. I'm not Alden. When I read the name I want to call him what he is called. Names don't change when a different language is used.

Catherine

“I don’t think you’re going to feed either of us to an alien animal again.” Alden and Stu are totally going to be chased by an alien animal wanting to eat them at some point aren’t they 😄

Vysirez

Love the chapter. I think Alden and Stuart's friendship is my favorite part of the story.

Siobhan Hokin

Since it's 3rd person limited, the narrator basically is Alden, we're seeing everything from his perspective.

C. Adkins

Okay, it’s late, but I’m really loving the discussion above about how Stu might not have the two mind ability most Arts have. He has been presented as neurodivergent, maybe because of that. Now, my newest theory, is that the other knights who couldn’t take affixations, maybe couldn’t specifically BECAUSE of the two minds. One mind was always poking the bound authority, while we see Alden having to purposefully NOT poke at it for a time after affixing. So Stu is actually going to be BETTER at being a knight, but since he is neurodivergent, the family doesn’t think that because he isn’t “normal” (whatever that means for a galaxy hopping Uber chaos warrior clans). And, as someone mentioned, maybe he will be worse at some skills, better at others. I think BoB would specifically NEED someone of a single mind due to the singular focus we have seen Alden require to access the really good portions of the skill (even at his low-ish level)

Aspiring Moth

shippers are real quiet after this chapter dropped. team friendship is eating good

Rodmin

Damn damn damn! I can't properly put into words how good this chapter is. I love everything about how you portrait the relationship between Alden and Stu and how this chapter progresses. It was so good to read and just kept on going. Having such a good and long chapter was pure bliss! Thank you! So excited about the whole visit at Stu.

Adam Andersson

That's not an art thing, that's an artonan thing. Also he kinda has to have it to be seen as a prodigious mage, because most Artonan spell casting is relies on having two minds to shape the spells.

Clint

Or he's going to end up feeding Stu's foot bone fragment to Gorgon, allowing Gorgon to do something critical to saving Stu and making him the best knight ever.

I’m reading this story too much. Had a dream about REM’s hit song Shiny Happy Water Bugs

Depends what specific oaths Stu has already taken -- my guess is that Mother pushed Alden and Stu together because they are in a somewhat unique position to help each other.

@zdm A good therapist will also watch for patient progress Patients need different counseling styles at different parts of their lives Children, tweens, adolescents, young adults, etc. need different supports and different pushes Reminds me how Zeridee kept trying < < loving lies > > on Alden about the dead Avowed even though it was inappropriate for him While relaxing with Stu was perfect for dealing with dead Avowed 🔲

I’m rather hoping he won’t tell Stuart because atonans finding out about his situation will probably have consequences for all of humanity and not just him. This isn’t something I want to see him agonizing over, but I also really don’t want to watch him treat the info without respect either. I think Stu likely wouldn’t tell anyone else, but still.

The comment section appears to be splitting into to camps ( especially last chapter ) Pro Shippers, and Anti Shippers 🏴‍☠️ I understand both side But …how can I get my hardcover, acid free archival paper, autographed ( with a doodle of the polar bear head ) copy of Super Supportive: Kibby's Great Adventure, Volume 1 without it being shipped¿? 🚢 We could all descend on Chicago at 10:39 PM on January 24th, but it is a little cold for these old bones 🥶 NOTE HOW COLD IS CHICAGO IN JANUARY? January tends to be the coldest month, but also the snowiest month of the year. The temperatures reach between 26 °F and 36°F (-3 - 2 °C), with an average high of 31 °F (-1 °C). On the other end, the average low this month is 17 °F (-9°C). ☃️

Ian T Hathaway

God, I will never have enough of these two

glow

Stu does have the two mind ability, or at their phone calls strongly implied it. Stu was able to effortlessly pay attention to both Alden and what was going on in his classes. Iirc he also looked up some info worry his eyerings once while in conversation with Alden, although that I'm not completely sure about.

glow

Stuart is going to find out eventually, that much is certain just by virtue of storytelling logic, it's just a matter of when. Stu never finding out would mean Alden would stay a secret wizard for the entirety of the story, that wouldn't be very compelling or satisfying

FuriousDee

Alden can't even do that and Alden being a knight is irrelevant for his ability to do that in the future.

FuriousDee

In her defence, she might not have had time to explain everything to him, given he is an alien their customs are weird for Artonians and he might not even know what knights are from her perspective.

FuriousDee

The other wizard's opinions matter if they assassinate him over it. Or if they just demand he swears those oaths and he doesn't want to.

GryphonKnight

>But the more he talked, the more talking felt like something he wanted to do. Sitting on the cushion spell in the warm forest, with sunlight slanting through gaps in the branches and a ryeh-b’t trying to tempt the two of them into a game of chase with a zipper, it was hard to imagine a setting farther away from the disaster.  During the Sinker Sender disaster, Alden was originally trapped on The Span with an instructor who thought him unfit to be a hero and a scared, sulking Earth Kernel followed by dealing with Murderous Thieves looking to steal the equivalent of Aladdin's flying carpet While at Rapport I, Alden has the most powerful Artonans in the multiverse nearby, Artonan Kernel I, magic trees ( including his own birth tree¿? ), top tier healers, and any magic available to the Rapport ( including the Moleman Butler ), while any visitors are bound by tattoo magic NOT to act like gokoratches It is not surprising Alden feels safe, supported, and valued 🍲🍲🍲 Had to look up Lucille She was the `Gentle Giant` / `No kill` Strength Brute that didn't like the Gentle Giant label ( being older, you realize how much humans form our concepts of beauty, and worth, based on popular media and peer feedback ) Now I want Lind to mentor Lucille since Lind specializes in supporting construction use of destructive magic ( healing spells, anti motion Knight skill, Sun spheres, etc. ) ❤️‍🩹🥶☀️ >ignoring the human bedtime I put on the itinerary. It was there for a reason. You’re healing. You need even more sleep than usual. Vandy, and Stuart, are going to be BFF, or mortal enemies, if they ever meet 📣⚔️ >Stuart hissed at him. “Don’t say that so loud! My family doesn’t need to know every single thing that came out of my mouth that day! Blackmail material The basis of many lasting friendships 💰 >“I only attended the traditional student stress-releasing party held during the entrance exams. It was fun at the time. But I decided not to attend any more for awhile. The < < camaraderie of celebrants > > had more of an impact on my judgment than I expected it to.” Did Stuart say "Hold my < < sensory gum > > " 🍺

Shaun Clark

The song I found that best represents this chapter for me is: Skip to the good part by friendship.

Shaun Clark

I want to know more about what happened to Stu as a kid, why did his father have to seek out so many mind doctors?

John D Jones
“They don’t think that!” Stuart (Stu-art'h) exclaimed. “Aunt Alis gave you a commendation. They all know you sacrificed your body in protection of Kivb-ee—I have all of her latest messages for you—and if they had << dared >> to say something so << an obscenity implying extreme stupidity >> about your character I would have called upon her to describe your every wound to them in detail until they felt shame.”
"Stuart" should be Stu-art'h. The best part of this is that not only would Stu call on Alis, but Alis would certainly respond and do the description of Alden's wounds while directing her utter contempt toward the << an obscenity implying extreme stupidity >> people who had << dared >> to question Alden's motives in befriending Stu-art'h.

Even during the events, the door seal always made me think of this comic: https://randowis.com/2015/01/07/the-tower/

Alexander Dupree

I wonder if it was something like a magical version of night terrors. Basically something that is hard to call an “injury” while needing assistance if say they get worse with magic. Basically what if the monsters outside of your sheets could ACTUALLY eat your toes if they poke out.

FuriousDee

Why couldn’t the Artonians just focus both minds on something or two somethings else

Pedro Henrique

His older sister,Sina, couldnt handle being a Knight and choose to be euthanized in the ritual.

Brell

Just spitballing here, but Sina being half of Stu's consciousness makes some sense. She was gendered female, while Stu was gendered male. The art'h family arranged for different bodies to accommodate them. Sina and Stu were unique twin siblings who understood the world and each other in ways no other Artonans did.

Endaris

It's Alden but also not really. I strongly doubt Kibby ever told Alden in detail about her Auriad theft and it has been made clear that Alden isn't privy to Lute's story in all the details. Or what happened in Everyone, Everywhere. I'm fine with either but I can also understand if people trip over it.

Michael Telford

It would be a kick in the chest is Stu is choosing BoAB because of his experiences with Alden.

Partha Peddi

It is good to know that Stu is starting with a spell, and transitioning it to his skill affixation. This may or may not rule out the original 300 skills idea. It just confirms that Avoved get a simplified design with a class including the skill & related content including foundation points the committee deemed necessary.

Michael Majcen

I don't know why my brain keeps thinking they're going to kiss, lol, but am so glad for their relationship

Morgwath

Lovely chapter, they both need someone who listens to them without projecting.

Jim

BTW, I hope we get to share in some Kivb-ee message love.

DAK

It feels like there is a lot of push in the comments for Alden not to share that he has Authority control with Stu or anyone. It just doesn’t seem practical to me to keep it secret, though. Even humans have noted his stats are quirky (Neha back in intake), and Klein and others seem to feel something is off as well. The next affixation might be a year (I doubt it is that long) and reality vs quiet rabbit is going to be more odd then. The problem with Quiet Rabbit is that it’s a ‘passive’ ability and any wizard that digs can still ask questions. Alden really needs someone in on the deceit to run interference and hide him from summons. Stu-art’h could do this with a ton of work. For a whole clan (art’hs, probably), this would be almost no effort. There’s no reason I can think of that the secret would have to spread past there. Beyond this, Alden being Alden, I think he’ll feel not telling Stu goes from caution to lies by omission pretty soon. Stu is going to be dumping a lot of privileged info on Alden that he’s going to have to pretend to not know or not understand, and I don’t think Alden can fake it that well.

Aspiring Moth

he used to experience hallucinations when he was younger. it could be that, or it could be the grief from sina, or they could both be related to each other

Ian T Hathaway

Shippers are still plenty happy. Just less people foaming at the mouth in anger at the idea of two boys being romantic for us to put up with

JLG33

> I strongly doubt Kibby ever told Alden in detail about her Auriad theft ... I'm sure that Kibv-ee has enough sense *not* to tell Alden or anyone else about her acquisition of a 2nd auriad via any communication that might be intercepted. When she can call Alden directly, or when they are next together in person she might show it off to him and tell him the story. And he'll be very proud and relieved that she has kept secret his wizard powers.

Peter Moras

I'm really glad Alden has someone he can trust and talk to about everything.

Anita

I think Alden can seem clueless when he wants but it would not be in his best interest. He needs a pal to unload to, like he did with boe in intake. Boe could be a valve for sentimental and heroic stuff and stu for wizard stuff like spells. Alden could also get spell ingredients through stu and enlarge his spell repertoire ( maybe 🤔)

Jim

Why would it be Stu-art'h there? She had been using Stuart in various contexts including dialog all around that statement.

Sunden

Stu may not be able to run interference. And by that I mean his oaths may prevent him from doing so if he believes it to go against "the good of the triplanets". Worst-case scenario, he's obligated to turn Alden in even if he doesn't want to.

DAK

@Sunden--on rethinking, I suspect you are correct on Stu and his oath--we don't know anything about the Knight oath, but at minimum I'd assume it ensures one doesn't turn on the Senate/triplanets. At some point keeping a power leveler secret is going to get interpreted as endangering the universe. It's also not clear what oaths or precedents or taboos exist that would push someone to force Alden to swear his own oath even earlier than that. Ironically, if there is wiggle room for interpretation, out of the Primary, Alis, Evul, Stu or Esh, Stu would probably be the least likely to think he could stay quiet... Big picture for Alden, though: this IS all going to blow up eventually. If he has people on his side before it goes public, it's less likely to be a complete mess for him. I'd much rather the art'hs all know--even if they have to tell the world--than if, for example, Bash-nor figured it out and told the Senate first.

Anita

Stu also said the oaths are up to his perspective. So he could change it and make the triplanets safety tied to waiting for Alden to be ready to reveal things on his own.like it's better to have a functioning knight and wait to him to heal than throw him early to the sharks.

AFK37115

I wonder if Alden will meet some of Stuart's parents when they go to see the husenots? also, Stuart's family finding the rarest husenots to gift him and him worrying the about the mall's husenots was super sweet!

Tungsten

I love this chapter!

C. Adkins

Hey Adam, I was shortening Artonan to art. Sorry for confusion.

C. Adkins

And FuriousDee, I think Artonans basically have adhd, so while they probably can, doing so easily or all the time seems to be outside the normal wheelhouse

Terrestrial_Biped

I think whatever injury they're speaking of happened before Sina died, when he was younger. Possibly it has something to do with Stu's never-mentioned mother. The language sounds to me as if Stuart was quite young when whatever-it-is happened.

Yaboku

The point would be that thr narrator would be the protagonist of the current scnlene, for instance Kibby during the theft.

Terrestrial_Biped

The spell is for tomorrow, as a demonstration, and affixation is more than a month away. And Stu isn't going to affix a spell; spell impressions are incapable of growth. Instead he's going to affix a skill which is *similar in effect* to the spell, but designed as a limitless skill.

Terrestrial_Biped

I've been using "bear-botherer" for the one Zeridee used as "someone so stupid they should have already died of their own errors". Could fit well here if we spice it up just a little.

Partha Peddi

@Matt Starting point for the skill being a spell does not invalidate the 300 skills idea. All skills can be replicated by spells, but skill activation is a lot faster. We have no idea what the other 299 skills are at this point. Mannon and possibly Haoyu & his dad might have one each.

Terrestrial_Biped

There is absolutely no reason for Stu to choose BoAB. He's had a whole life's worth of exposure to skills just as good or better. He wouldn't need a grand presentation to tell Alden "Actually, I'm doing your thing." And it would stuck from a story perspective if Stu did the exact same thing as Alden but better. And he WOULD be better, because Stu is almost guaranteed to be much stronger than Alden and he'll have the advantage of teaching from people actually knowledgeable about the skill, and about teaching methods applicable to people with an authority sense. It would be considerably more interesting if Stu had a skill that BoAB can support. THAT route can eventually lead to an epic Stu-Alden team up.

Terrestrial_Biped

There's a family full of knights and wizards here. I suspect Stu would pick up on a spying eye spell, but he probably has no way to detect people who just listen in with superhearing. And given the level of conflict over Stu's choices, I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least one person who decided to snoop a little.

Terrestrial_Biped

There's no way. The Primary reevaluates Alden in fourteen years. There is zero chance that the secret of his authority sense or of his OG skill survives that event. And once the Primary knows... well. It's a big damn deal. No matter Jeneth's politics, it is going to matter to him hugely in SOME kind of way. And he'll start giving Alden assignments as if Alden is a knight. It will become public. It will be made official.

Terrestrial_Biped

I think not. Kibby sent those videos for Alden. They may have private thoughts Kibby wouldn't want shown to just anyone. Alden would at a minimum need to pre-watch them before he would share.

kapat

ohhh I guess that would make sense. I’ve been so focused on Sina’s death since it seemed to really influence Stu, but it’s not like that was Stu’s only childhood experience lol

Adam Andersson

Is she his sister, tho? That was an assumption on Alden's part iirc, and Stu is suspiciously silent about his birthmother. I'd be more surprised if she does turn out to be his birth mother, but in a society with age reversing treatments it is possible.

VP

“I think I just saw him execute his own daughter,” said Alden, trying and failing to shove the memory of the girl’s face away from his mind. “And it didn’t look like something he wanted to do. I doubt he has tolerance for petty anything.” “Sina-art’h,” she said. “Yes. She was one of his daughters. Very talented. It’s not fair to call it an execution.”

VP

@Adam Sina was the daughter , but I love where you are going with that. We need to know more about his mother

VP

“You don’t think I can keep it a secret?” “Not for your entire life,” she said. “And even in the short-term you would benefit from assistance." > And then She sent him to meet with Stu, who would also "benefit from assistance". I know some say that he shouldn't tell him, but Mother is basically a teacher who forced the two loners in class together in the hopes that at least they have one friend

Sindri

The 300 original skills were described as being invented when the first non-artonan Avowed were being granted magic. Knights existed before that. The 300 might be based on the most popular powers chosen by knights, but knights absolutely would not have been limited to those 300 skills at any time. Even if everybody who's talked about the 300 was lying in order to conceal their connection to the Knights, why would there have been a strictly limited number that the knights themselves stuck to, but then as soon as magic started being given out to the Resource worlds the number expanded to tens of thousands? Either the knights would have already expanded their own options before other Avowed existed, or all the Avowed would be restricted to the same 300 skills forever.

Sindri

I can see valid arguments for not telling other humans, because people like Liam would absolutely ruin their lives trying to learn more magic. I can see valid arguments for not telling the government of the Triplanets, because a single human Knight (who was not chosen or approved of by anybody in authority (except Mother)) would turn him into the center of a huge political struggle. I can see valid arguments for never mentioning his true situation in a message that could be recorded or intercepted by a third party. But a single friend, who can be trusted not to speed the knowledge, in a location that should be impossible for anybody other than Mother to listen in? This is the time to speak up.

John D Jones

I hadn't noticed the other instances. I thought Stu-art'h fit there because that's his actual name. Stuart is not his actual name. If Stu's name was written in English format, it would be Sina Stu Art'h. Like my name is John D Jones and not Johdnes or something.

Partha Peddi

It seems to me that Knight's approach to their affixation is based on their interest. They figure out a skill that suites them and affix it as their skill. It is possible they affix multiple skills. It is highly likely that the 300 were a superset of spells affixed by knights, as there has to be a starting point. It was probably expanded starting with the best knight skills/spells. It is possible there is a separate set of knight specific spells without an overlap with the 300, but I doubt that they are infinitely expandable like the 300 skills. So, a knight intending to become the most powerful will definitely go for an infinitely expandable spell/skill - one of the 300. The skills are all rooted in spells, so I am assuming there is a fireball skill. Does it make it to the 300? who knows other than Sleyca...

John D Jones

@ Matt Dimeo From Ch. 59 "Mother Part 1"
"... Defending the universe is all about having that one useful, well-designed, infinitely expandable skill to funnel all of your power into. As long as you don’t choose one of those, nobody will be interested in—” “Avowed skill number one hundred and twelve,” she said. “Designed at a time when the Knights were fewer and weaker, and many believed they would not be able to push back the chaos without help. Potentially powerful, of course. But not intended for solo combat. You’ve been thinking of your skill as something simple, but its creators admired it most for its versatility. You’ll see if you choose to develop it. It’s capable of supporting a number of other skills in interesting ways.”
The Bearer of All Burdens is Skill number 112 of the 300. There are tens of thousands, possibly millions of Skills, but there are only 300 infinitely expandable Skills. That's why the hn'ytons choose their main Skill to be one of those, so they can put most of their Bound Authority into to be able to "cut mooons in half."

Matt DiMeo

The 300 skills are not knight skills- an essay: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vR7eEHqapGes5oo7kqR539jAfZ24wHaF6SqTjy1ud82gpX7ToMPx_e9NQbVPi4lxTOH2ywIiz9xsHdj/pub Every single thing we know about them points against Knights using them, except for one neutral fact that points neither way.

Terrestrial_Biped

The language Stu used suggests to me that whatever not-injury he suffered was earlier than his sister's death. Back when he was young enough to be distracted from requests for a pet ryeh-b't. Possibly it has something to do with Stu's never-mentioned birthmother.

JJ Hunter

Looking forward to coming back and leaving a longer comment tomorrow, but just wanted to say thank you, Sleyca, for this gift of a chapter. It was such a balm to read when you released it on Sunday, and I carried that sense of second-hand easing into much-needed connection and support after a long hard time with me into a very long hard day I might have otherwise dreaded today. And it was well, albeit a lot of work. Now I get to look forward to rereading Tenderroot and this again tomorrow, knowing I too have gotten through my own recent << life trial >>. I've stretched and I haven't broken. And soon I will get to rest.

JJ Hunter

@Kbzzy, I have been wondering for a while whether 'Chose Persona' and the System-enabled capacity to set special rules around which name applies when might permit Alden to, say, switch to a hn'tyon persona with a special hn'tyon name (Sam-el, perhaps? or just Bearer?) that is only in effect whenever he is wearing a hn'tyon uniform with his face obscured, or the like. Interesting possibilities there.... I would expect the hn'tyon community to be in the know if this path ended up being realized, but not necessarily the Artonan general public, and definitely not most Earthlings.

JJ Hunter

@Heather, yes! I can't decide whether I'm more excited for Boe and Lute to meet, Boe and Stuart, or Lute and Stuart. Having all them meet with Alden present would be so good.

Neal Mayne

The biggest problem I see with this is that there are only a couple groups that he needs to hide his status from to be a quiet rabbit and the Art'hs are the most prominent of those groups if he tells them then there is no reason to hide it from anyone.

JJ Hunter

@Yaboku, I think Sleyca's choice of when Alden is thinking of his friend as Stuart vs. when he is thinking of him as Stu-art'h is very deliberate and carrying characterization weight. Have you tried reading again and noting the pattern of when each name version is used? I'm finding it to be quite a telling nuance for *Alden's* state of mind; it's adding significantly to my sense of Alden's shifting relationship with his friend and Alden's own balancing act standing between two worlds, two languages, two very different cultural mindsets.

JJ Hunter

team emotional intimacy regardless of whether pants feelings are involved is eating *very* well this chapter, yes.

Neal Mayne

So I was just outside Chicago when I went to bootcamp in March 2009 and it was goddamn cold so in January really freaking cold.

Neal Mayne

I'm going to say this isn't likely mostly because Stu is now old enough to bind his Authority and Sina already had her Authority bound and asked for release when Stu was a kid so they are definitely very different ages.

JustMe

I am not necessarily disagreeing, but I think that it might be more likely for this to happen during the December visit. For several reasons, such a s Alden and Stu knowing each other more intimately, or Stu being close to affixing himself

John D Jones

@ Matt DiMeo I read your essay. I think you're seizing on semantics more than anything else. So fine, anyone who has some of their Authority Affixed into a Skill is called a Pooki-snarple. By that definition, Avowed and Knights are both Pooki-snarples.

JJ Hunter

@Obran, to the tune of Shiny Happy People, I assume? Stu says Evul chimed in specifically that Alden wasn't just being polite, fearful, or dutiful. Evul knows that because Alden hung up on her and Stu last week when Stu accidentally called too early. I think she chimed in with that before calling Alden.

Terrestrial_Biped

@Brell: No, Stu and Sina weren't twins. She was a young adult when he was a young teen. She's his older sister.

Terrestrial_Biped

I don't think Sina's death was the "injury". He was young enough when injured, apparently, that he could be easily distracted from a request for a pet ryeh-b't. He was the equivalent of 12-13 when Sina died, too old for that.

Terrestrial_Biped

*Mother* is in on the deceit and hiding Alden from summons. There is no stronger ally Alden could have. Of course the secret can't be kept forever. Even Mother said this is a temporary reprieve. But telling the secret isn't going to somehow be helpful in keeping it from spreading. The best it can do is make Alden feel a bit better.

David Burchfield

It's a bit pedantic on my part. However Mother says there have been non Artonan Knights before, which strongly implies at least some Knights in the past have used the 300 skills. I am not in any way claiming Knights are limited to those skills, but unless those non Artonans were never avowed (which seems very unlikely based off of what we know.) then at least some Knights in the past did have some of the 300 skills as their Knight Skill, just like Alden would if he became a Knight.

Francis

Been to Chicago during polar vortex. Minus 40. I've never seen such snow or felt such cold.

Francis

Makes a lot of sense. Or the trees and Mother have that effect inherently

Francis

Matthew D, interestingly enough, it is also called Ketchup in German

Francis

I'm thinking now that the Arths were probably glad in a way that Stuart actually did something irresponsible for a chamge...

Aspiring Moth

the next chapter may be a mother chapter, given that systems have a habit of talking to sleeping people. I thought mother would have to wait until Stu'arth was asleep, but maybe not

ACX

Tbh I read the thing about the lack of mention of a birthmother as in he doesn't have one since in the chapter where they were at the restaurant they spoke about "artificial wombs", but he could be an orphan. I don't know why I missed the easy explanation and jumped to the weirder case first

Shaun Clark

The way Alden says that he's sorry stew (sorry don't get to read how names are spelled as I'm visually, impaired,) got hurt when he was younger, makes me think he suffered an injury. The way Stu talks about needing a mind healer and the way they describe how he doesn't split his focus, and is very single-minded, makes me think it was probably a brain injury. I will admit my own past with such issues makes me more inclined to see myself in a character I like, but still there are other signs in there. Next paragraph about how he got the injury that could be many ways. Probably that it's an injury something was forcibly done, and since he doesn't talk about the mother, I think it might have something to do with that. Abuse, abandonment, other awful a-words have an impact on the brain of a child, or anyone else. But it could also be maybe she was a knight in the field while she was pregnant and was mortally injured and the baby survived but she did not. It could be why Stu is the youngest.

Shaun Clark

I do not know whether or not Alden will come out to stew as a pseudo-knight, but I bet he will. I'm thinking he will want to level up under mother's care, and the best time to do that would be over the winter break where he would have time to recover afterwards and he's planning on coming to see Stu anyway. This means that when stew is going through affixation, Alden will as well.

maledei

I was thinking it might wait until he's transporting back to earth and will intercept maybe, to let him have a couple of peaceful days first.

Guus van der Borg

Sounds like my parents. Both my brother and sister had a strict curfew for staying out when they were teenagers. When I stayed out late once, they were just happy I was socializing. :)

ImNotHere

I like your theory of pre-birth injury to explain the "single mind" but there is two caveats : 1) Mother describe the death of Sina as the worst day of Stu 2) Stu says that "injury" is not the best term, so I would more go the side of trauma (again with his sister's death) But in any way, I was also thinking of the death of his mother with the title "the youngest" and a lack of reference to her

ImNotHere

Telling Stu is a possibility but affixing in december probably not. He had more or less a year the week before (See "you've grown" c105). And during the events he felt his affixation grow more than his free authority. So the deadline should be further away. (And he will not affix in advance)

Anita

With him being in q2, I think he'll take a quarter off to handle his affixation at the end of the school year and join year 2 with those that started in q1( like maricel). This way, there's no explanation necessary to his professors about him not using his skills.

Sunden

But Stuart can't be trusted to keep the secret. He might want to, but he's already taken oaths that might literally prevent him from doing so. We don't know how likely it is that Stuart might not be able to keep the secret. And their friendship probably wouldn't survive Stuart being forced to share it. So if Alden told Stuart, he'd just be risking their friendship to... what? Not feel guilty about keeping a secret? Make himself feel better? If Alden actually really values their friendship, he will recognize that it's not worth risking for that. And if Stuart values their friendship, then I think he would understand Alden's decision if he knew the full details of it.

Sunden

Sleyca is very careful about names and what they signify / when they're used. Alden never refers to Mother as Mother for example. In his thoughts, he always thinks of her as "she" or "the Artona 1 Kernel". Kibby is "Kibby" in his thoughts and "Kivb-ee" out loud when talking to others. He's talked to Evul-art'h many times now, but never said her name out loud. Names have /meaning/ both within the story and outside of it, and paying attention can give you several clues not just about Alden's mind-state but also Sleyca's intentions.

Zenty

Well, that's because there were fewer insufferable bigots in the comments of this chapter so there's no need to argue about how their reading comprehension is lacking. This chapter is already proving on its own how great Stu is at organizing a romantic first date, I know I couldn't do better even if I tried : )

Phoenix

I'm trying to understand Alden's deep dislike of avowed/affixation? I thought at first it was flat impossible for humans to gain magic without being Avowed, then decided that the (possible conspiracy) was that wizard training as reserved for the rulers (unfair, i suppose, but sensible from a certain point of view). But getting affixations so you DONT turn into a demon or create chaos around you seems like a very GOOD thing, and Alden is treating the system(s) like they are somewhere between ripping him off and actually abusing him. Am I way off base here?

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

Only 300 ever made available to avowed. There are political reasons for not expanding on the 300 availabke for avowed, but no political or practical reasons for not expanding the selection available for knights.

Loki

If they were just affixing people and leaving them alone you would be mostly correct, but the Contract comes with being summoned for whatever the Artonans want. (in Ryeh-b'ts like Alden's case, mostly parties and auxiliary luxury stuff, but for other classes, it's being sent to the battlefields to fight against chaos. Being selected for Affixation is somewhat akin to being drafted in that context "you may not refuse to serve". What Alden says to Stu this chapter is that he would be uncomfortable if Stu-art'h causally summoned him. Probably because that mixes the Boss-worker relationship with the friend one. And he's uncomfortable with that. In addition, Affixation is a warping of what Is You on a fundamental level to be a machine to do a specific limited type of magic. Humans can't feel this, so from their perspective it's 'free' powers but it actually isn't. You might be able to take from other genre of fiction and think of it as like soul mutilation. Alden's mixed feelings come from that as well. Unlike other humans though, Alden can feel it, and it Hurts. It Hurts indescribably bad when its happening (see CH 59,60,61 for more info on this), and it keeps Hurting at a decaying but present rate afterwards before stabilizing. then the free authority grows and starts hurting more again culminating in another round of affixation and the cycle continues. He knows now that he's in the system its better for him to happen than for it to not, but for both him and Stu-art'h and every knight its a huge sacrifice to accept chronic existential pain for vast magical power.

Partha Peddi

It is the timing of the affixation that is an issue for Alden. Without free authority, he can not practice spells. And, he does not have to affix till his free authority exceeds his bound authority. But the earth contract likes to push him at every level by default.. now with the agreement, it will be better.

Phoenix

I appreciate you replying, and I think I get it? Getting drafted and such can definitely lead to resentment. So not having Stu-art'h summon him might make sense, although of all the summoners I would prefer my friends to summon me over random possibly evil wizards. But as to the hurting and such, I mean, Alden was given a clear choice to duck out of that path. He is suffering from complex PTSD and chronic pain, but he ran away from leveling and then vomited afterwards, and that level of response is something I associate with like... rape / torture/ abuse survivors. Which if that is the take-away I am suppose to get, ok, although that paints the system(s) as being a considerably more malefic force than I was... expecting(?) from the kind of story? I'll guess I'll have to see as we go

Phoenix

It was the rather extreme emotional/physical response that is freaking me out- I get that he wants to maintain a level of free authority so he can cast spells and so on, and probably doesn't look forward to binding again if it hurt so much and will hurt for a while after, cause who does want to look forward to that? But he ran away from Earth system and then vomited in the bathroom afterwards, and wow, thats pretty intense I guess? And then told Stu-art'h "no, don't summon me without my permission" despite being friends with the guy, or soon friends, and thats also a pretty intense reaction that I didn't expect from the story. I may have to re-read to see what the heck I a missing from Alden that he is acting like that, cause it is very confusing to me.

I wonder Sleyca posting only once a week, but giving a bonus chapter once or twice a month as possible, would feel better than the current situation. Whatever works for Sleyca is best, but from a readers perspective, I feel like getting two bonus chapters a month would feel a lot better than having two skips a month. Even though it would be the same amount of chapters.

Master Program

Although I agree with most of the other comments that on the surface this is a nice, warm chapter, I can't help but be bothered by Stuart's refusal to make the summoning related promise. While Alden correctly points out that the example involving Evul is rediculous, the underlying implication remains that Stuart would prioritize a knight's wellbeing over Alden's. In fact, he would see it as his duty which is kind of disturbing considering he is probably the Artonan closest to being on Alden's side. It's also a pretty massive red flag given what we know so far: the darker burdens that can eventually be borne and that pain can only be carried by experiencing it (Mother), that the primary would make his life miserable once he learned of his skill (Joe), that an avowed's freedom of choice and happiness are not the highest priorities (System) and most importantly that many knight-trainees are still choosing to die despite having a strong support network and all the material comforts the universe can offer. I can easily imagine a world where Stuart would accept being hated by Alden if it meant his sister Sina would've lived. Maybe I'm overthinking it but it would be pretty ironic if the greatest impediment to Alden's happiness turns out to be the very knights the story up to now has presented as the ultimate good guys.

Terrestrial_Biped

I agree with you that whatever-it-was that happened to Stu happened prior to Sina's death. He was equivalent to 12 or 13 when Sina died, and says his dad was trying to fix the injury when he was "very young". The bit about being distracted from the pet ryeh-b't idea also suggests he was younger than twelve. I also join you in suspecting Stu's mom was involved... somehow, though for all we know she died protecting him or something. There's just too much potential for drama in the fact that he never speaks of her, and too much in the fact that this alien prince with loving parents was somehow still grievously injured as a small child. Finally, I think the injury happening when Stu was very young fits perfectly with Sina's death being the worst day of his life, because memories don't stick well when you're very young, if you even understand what's happening at all. If your mom dies when you're two, you don't miss her except as an idea. And if she dies outside of your direct line of sight, or dies in a way that isn't obvious irrefutable bodily destruction, good luck getting adults to explain that to you. Alden had trouble getting that truth, and he was eight.

Partha Peddi

Alden coming out to any Wizard is a bad idea. I changed my mind on this with the current chapter. Given that Stu will call Alden to preserve anyone in case they are in mortal danger, there is a possibility that Stu might not call Alden if there is a chance for Alden to die - soft breakable rabbit. If Stu figures out that Alden can cast spells to defend himself, he might be summoned to Intensity 99 situations.

Ano Ano

Imagine that you got an extremely invasive surgery without any anesthesia. It is incredibly agonizing and a total violation. Then a few months later you find out you're going to have to once again go through the exact same trauma in less than a year.

Terrestrial_Biped

I think you're looking at two things that are mostly separate and thinking they're the same, which is where the confusion is coming from. Affixation is literally torture for Alden, as it is for anyone with an authority sense. That's where the running away and vomiting is coming from. Alden wants to put that off for as long as he possibly can, both for immediate reasons (no thanks on the torture) and long-term strategic reasons he can barely consider right now (Mother says large affixations are better than small ones for the purpose of overall growth rate). He knows he *needs* to affix periodically to avoid death and/or demonization, but... that doesn't give him any more warm fuzzies about the process. Alden doesn't want to be casually summoned by Stu for about the same reasons you don't want to work for someone close to you. You're going to have complicated feelings about even the best boss; the more power they hold over you, the more complicated (or outright hostile) the feelings. And a summoner holds a LOT of power over a summoned Avowed. Alden's already seen one not-so-great summons where a bunch of idiot kids almost commanded him to kill himself to keep their reputations safe. He does not want to associate that and his friend Stu, at all. Finally, there's a third thing mucking up his perception and feelings of all this, which the desire for self-determination. His actual preferred option - just being a wizard - is straight up closed to him. That might not have stung much before he thought it was a real possibility, but it stings now that it has been dangled in front of him through magic lessons with Kibby that *miraculously worked* and snatched away by hard causality. He can never un-affix. He could have gone back to no pain, but at the cost of the memory of his beloved sister Kibby. He chose, between two terrible options, the one where he took the pain but kept the magic and the memories. Yeah, he chose this. But he might not have if he'd had all the information before he'd backed himself into a corner, and he hates that the choices given him were so limited and that he had to choose to savage himself to avoid betraying his self-concept. Everyone around him seems to have a better deal, in some ways. Non-Avowed are mostly safe. Avowed live free of pain. Wizards get the exact thing he wants, and Stu gets to make the choice for himself, with open eyes. And he's alone. He's suffering alone, and knights aren't really meant to. They're supposed to have a cadre of fellow inductees who are going through the exact same thing, that they can lean on for fellowship and solidarity. And Alden suffers alone, and it breaks his brain a little how much his fellow Avowed are giving up because that's where his head is right now, pegged to the loss of agency without really considering how much being a powerful Avowed is the exact thing most of his fellow students would probably choose. Our boy is hurting, and the color of that pains stains everything that he sees.

Shaun Clark

Physical injury, even disability, versus emotional or mental injury and disability. As someone who's dealt with both, I will say that the emotional and mental side is the worst part. Sticks and stones may break my bones, but they'll heal. The names will always haunt me.

Shaun Clark

Thank you for helping articulate my thoughts. whether, these ideas, bear fruit, or some of the other ideas doesn't detract from a great story. I almost look forward to being proven wrong and having some other great plot twist.

Shaun Clark

I love the idea of getting two rewards a month! And so much better than worrying about your favourite author getting burned out. Downside is that reward chapters would be easy to take away.

Barrett Fogarty

Sorry, I have to disagree. I think you misunderstand what Sleyca has written about the role of Knights in Artonan society. Knights make oaths and have their authority bound so they can fight chaos and kill demons. Knights preserve the species. Being a Knight does not mean they have to be nice guys to Alden. That some of are nice is a bonus. Stu is becoming a Knight and he is frank that he may have to do unpleasant things. I think you need to reconsider Artonan society, the role of Knights in that society, and why they are revered.

Procrastination

I see it as a recognition that Stu would prioritize the life of a family member over the preferences of a friend… as well he SHOULD. In a perfect world, of course you wouldn’t summon a friend without permission, but reality doesn’t work that way. If there is an emergency that Alden is particularly qualified to handle, the fact that his friend is the summoner shouldn’t matter. I think Alden was wrong to ask a future knight to prioritize his comfort over the life/lives of others. Now, for non-emergencies, sure. Don’t draw attention to the power imbalance. But when it matters? Friendship ISN’T as important.

Alex Scriber

I hope you get that rest you were looking forward to. Your comments are often kind and thoughtful. It would be nice if the work was kind to you in turn.

Alex Scriber

Every time Stu used a spell this chapter stood out to me. I wonder what it feels like to be the only human wizard and hang out with a wizard who uses spells as casually and usefully as Stu did here. I imagine a part of Alden would want to ask how to cast it too, or details of how it works, but has to content itself with watching closely. I think it would be hard. Hard to stay silent. Hard to not show his own spells. It’s good so much of the visit seems to have been a time of healing and friendship.

Tadas

Arth family seems nice. I know they had a fight with Stu, but reasons for it seems kind of wholesome. They are trying to protect the kid who had trouble dealing with sisters’ death after affixation and are worried that he too might not handle it. They are putting Stu’s wellbeing first instead of potential added prestige or power of having one more knight in the family. We are hinted many times that Stu has trouble communicating and worry that he might misunderstood Alden’s motivations is legitimate and they are trying to protect Alden as well. And in the end, they aren’t trying to “outmuscle” Stu - eventually they concede. Wholesomeness of the family is shown in other ways as well – Stu liked husenots and they looked for so many rare types to gift that they had to remodel the room to fit them. Father putting in a lot of effort to find a suitable healer. Even soft denial of ryeh-b’t when he was young was done so Stu wouldn’t be hurt. It’s lovely even if sometimes misguided care and I think Stu feels same way - “I used unbefitting words for reasoning with loved ones”.

Anthony Lutz

I just had the thought that Alden telling any Artonan that he has authority sense/can cast spells will pretty quickly get his fake profile noticed or at least rendered useless, especially by hn’tyons. Hn'tyons whole thing is free authority forcing rapid growth because of the bound authority, and Alden leveling 1 at a time is going to have them tell him not to, someone will have to start noticing a level discrepency.

Josh Brooks

I am somewhat excited for a therapy chapter, but also I don’t think it’s necessary for Alden right now. He has had therapy before when returning from Thegund, but his emotional stability is grounded in the people around him. It feels like it could be weird timing to go from nearly breaking down and blowing a hole in a wall to finally getting relief emotionally to unpacking feelings/experiencing tranquility on a soul level a la Gorgon in the span of a day. Idk, as much as I want Alden to have relief and understanding, it feels less urgent with Stuart taking care of him.

ImNotHere

Just tought of an argument in favor of Alden telling Stu that he has an authority sense : Evul tell Stu that he his a beautiful caster. So Stu should be proficient in spells Alden was wondering if he learned spells correctly, that he had maybe cultural knowledge lacking(? Holes?Gaps?missing?) that distord his learning. If Stu knows, he could teach Alden like Lute is teaching wordchains. Stu knows what it means to have both, agrees that Alden had already too many terrible experience. He might want to protect Alden and keep his secret. He would not break his oath (not yet taken) because Mother already knows Alden's situation.

Armo

I think that @master program’s analysis is really interesting - and I do think you’re onto something with the Primary and Alden potentially being forced to do stuff that’s miserable to save knights’ lives.

JJ Hunter

I wonder if Stu's agonizing position of potential friends choosing to wait a year and see if he survives first is unique among the knight-hopefuls, or just a more extreme version of a pressure that all of them know they will be facing if they commit to this path?

JJ Hunter

It feels like such an interesting foil to what Lexi went through, and the experience of the children of Avowed, especially high ranked Avowed, on Anesidora more generally. As those kids start eighth grade, as they turn 15 years old, everything becomes waiting to find out if they will be Selected, and at what rank. They and their parents, their community, their existing friends and their potential friends, all have population statistics to help shape their expectations of what's *likely* to happen, but there are always the outliers like Jessica (or, for that matter, Lute himself) showing that a given average isn't an individual certainty. Even Gorgon's reading of Alden's potential only set him at ~70% chance of Selection; there must be other factors than chaos potential and authority qualities in play. (Say, a species-level quota for Selection set by the Artonan wizards in the committees governing Earth's management as a resource world? How many Human Avowed have recently died and need to be replaced? Maybe some game of statistical chicken Earth Contract is playing with whatever precipitates the creation of Unique-rank Selectees? So many possibilities...)

JJ Hunter

Stu-art'h and his peers aren't waiting to be Selected. They are wizards trained from an early age to consider knighthood as a potential path. They aren't waiting to be Selected by their birthplanet's Contract; instead, the pressure comes with whether they feel able to commit themselves to this path knowing it may well be their death, knowing the agony of initial affixation to come that can't ever be fully understand until they take the plunge and try to forging themselves, at which point they cannot undo that decision and can only continue or volunteer for their final rest. The knight-hopefuls select themselves. They and their parents, their community, their existing friends and their potential friends, may have population statistics to help shape their expectations of what's *likely* to happen next, but each aspirant is unique. Sina Stu-art'h is not Sina-art'h. Stu's family fears he is choosing to follow Sina's path to an early grave, but Stu is his own person. He bears Sina's name to continue it in life, not to join her prematurely in death. Stu is already following a different path, a path he is making his own path.

JJ Hunter

If Stu can't find close friends now among his fellow Artonan knight-hopefuls, or among his wizard peers at Leaf-Song, he has already chosen wisely in weaving friendship with Alden Ryeh-b'h, whom his aunt Alis has commended so highly, and his father the Primary has judged sufficiently whole to be a good candidate for service in low-level chaos fields in the future. He doesn't even know yet that Mother has already told Alden she would let him take a Knight uniform, that he has potential and character fit to swear as a hn'tyon. Alden is actively knight-hopeful-adjacent right now, and he does not take weaving friendship lightly. I look forward to Stu's survival, and where committing to this friendship now will take them both.

Anita

I think stu would love teaching Alden. He gets excited when he learns new things about earth and I think he would become very serious just like kibby if Alden expressed interest in learning spells or theory about spells.

Ryan

He can probably just tell mother to default to the real profile with people who know the truth, and the fake one for everyone else

werotan

This chapter did a bit of soul cleaning! Thank you author Sama!

Soup, Soup, Soupy Soup!

John D Jones

It is what it is. As a person who lives in the Central Time Zone in the USA, I've found that the Sun/Wed Soup tends to arrive between 2AM and 6 AM on Mon/Thur. And I'm fine with that. It means that when I come in from work after 10PM tonight, I'll go the hell to bed instead of staying up "just a few more minutes" to see if the Soup comes.

VP

Going to sleep. If Sleyca makes soup while I get my Zzz in, just tell her to dump the big pot on top of me. Especially if she made some Stew. That will wake me up.

Flying Goat

Hrm...I'd rather the stew be poured under me while sleeping. Then I'd stew over the chapter all night, in my sleep.

RainbowPhaze

His family definitely aren't bad or anything, but I disagree when it comes to the part about valuing Stu's wellbeing over prestige. Because prestige doesn't enter into it. The Art'h family is already incredibly well-regarded, full of accomplished wizards and knights (including both the Primary and Quarternary), and having or not having Stu as one of them doesn't change that. What they're doing is valuing protecting their idea of Stu over listening to him and understanding that the image of him in their minds is outdated or wrong. They mean well but their actions are mostly being obstinate and condescending to a young-adult who needs help making the best of the path he has decided to follow, instead of being harassed until he steps off of it.

David

I happened to end up in pdt this week, on business. Staying up all night suddenly seems like a reasonable course of action

Bryan Thew

Eh Stu is going to have to do the retraining bit so study buddies!

Andrew Simpson

I wonder how many touching SoL chapters of Stu and Alden hanging out we get before shit gets real

SnuggleCat

Got so excited about Soup Day that rambled to my dad about this fiction for like twenty minutes.

Blorcyn

I HUUUUUUUUNGERRRR FOR MY SUPER SOUP FOR THE SOUL. (I just watched the thriller video. So this is zombie hungering for brains voice, not angry customer asking for refund voice, to be clear)

Kbzzy

It’s a stellar piece of fiction isn’t it

Mack

It was nice that this chapter was not really a cliffhanger… but damn I’m still jonesing for more soup!

Guus van der Borg

I have mixed feelings about 'harassing young-adults until they step off their path'. Obviously, people should be free to choose their own paths. Buuuut, 'young-adults' are also, scientifically proven, the dumbest that they will ever be in their life. And they are expected to make choices that will likely shape the rest of their lives. As you'd expect, they are notorious for picking some really dumb options. If a parent sees their kid that is clearly not musically talented decide they want to be a musician, is it then not their duty to 'harras' them away from their path? Yes, it has a chance of working out great. But the path of becoming an artist is risky even under the best of circumstances, let alone when you're an untalented nobody. Young adults are stupid enough to take that plunge, but I believe it is the duty of a parent to advise them to take less risky options. The question then becomes, how far should they go? What balance do you strike between letting them be their own person, and preventing them from making obvious mistakes?

Guus van der Borg

@JLG33 I doubt Kibby will tell him about the theft at all. For two very distinct reasons. A. She probably doesn't want her favorite new adopted-brother to know/think that she's a thief. But even if that doesn't bother her, or if she will want to tell him to 'confess', she still probably won't because: B. She's consistently been shown to be very conscious of the concept of 'two people can keep a secret if one of them is dead'. She has insisted on getting contract tattoos about everything that's secret so they can't reveal secrets 'even under torture'. Operational security is apparently a big thing to Kibby. Probably that's what happens when you grow up with Joe as a mentor. :)

Andrew Tobin

I do like how the comparison to Illinois kind of makes it sound like he’s assuming the globes are the same size. I wonder if that’s the case, if Alden is widely off, or if the system provided a handy banana for scale.

UpgrayeDD

This chapter has one of the lowest comment counts in like forever. I have some thoughts about why, but regardless, ‘‘twas a very rich and meaty chapter.

Anthony Lutz

It was a good meaty chapter but didnt have too much new to speculate over, kinda makes sense we all didn't comment much.

Temp One

It was a fantastic chapter, one of my favorite even. Just I don't think there was much theorycrafting necessary with this chapter.

Sleyca

I expect the one I've just posted to have less, too. And then the one coming Sunday will probably be back to the normal amount. Just a guess though! I have been wrong before. Sometimes things I think are very clear-cut spark a ton of debate, and other times something I think is really mysterious and neat gets completely overlooked. It's always interesting to see as long as people are mostly happy.

Jeanean

AT least there can't be too significant of a size difference, or he would have probably noticed the change in gravity.

"Apparently some people believe I am too young, <>, and <> to choose who I share my own truths with" Alden: Oh No They Di'n't

Adam Birch

I can't express how much I love Stuart. The way you write him is honestly brilliant as well. He really speaks like somebody from an alien culture. You're so attentive to considering the slight and major differences in values, traditions. It's pretty incredible.
