[POSTING UPDATE: Wednesday (June 5th) chapter will be the first of the two skips for this month. ]

“How long will you stay?” Stuart asked. The Artonan boy was at his desk, eyes focused on something Alden couldn’t see.

And Alden, thoughts racing toward the goal of getting away from what had been shaping up to be an emotional pit of an evening, was trying to compose a text message to Esh-erdi. Letting the knight know where he was going and that he hadn’t been kidnapped seemed necessary.

“Shouldn’t you tell me that?” he replied in Artonan. “It’s your house.”

“I have two and a half days left of my weekend.”

Okay. He’s thinking long visit.

Right now, that sounded absolutely fine. “I have class Wednesday.”

“If you grow tired of my company or the environment you may use our summonarium whenever you want to. Humans have so many different eating customs. Is there a correct number of dishes I should serve to you to be properly welcoming?”

“Stuart. This is me. The last time we spoke, we talked about a person who pees in shoes, and I showed you paper shaping while I wore a large plastic bag on my body.”

Stuart looked up from whatever he was doing. “I know. And you called me your friend three times. I hoped all week that you would want to share another of your school days with me.”

“…you counted?”

“When I heard that Anesidora was <<threatened>>, I regretted letting timing and circumstance <<loom large>> in my consideration during our previous conversations.”

Alden accidentally added the phrase “loom large in my consideration” to his Esh-erdi text message, deleted it hastily, then said, “What does that mean?”

Stuart looked back down. “Ideal human sleeping temperature seems quite cold to me. Is that with or without a warming cushion?”

******

Alden remembered that he had a lot of nerves about visiting Stu-art’h and, more significantly, the rest of the art’h family about ten seconds before he wheeled his suitcase into Matadero’s in-house teleportation area.

The cube had one, of course. Way down at the bottom, below the water line, where there were no people. One sign he’d passed indicated that he’d entered an area called Flood Trap 2.

Stuart had ended the call about twenty minutes ago to finish his “preparations.” Alden had finished his own preparations by texting Kabir a request for snake care, brushing his teeth and hair, and shoving stuff into the big blue suitcase. Which was probably about to break some kind of a record for Earth-made suitcases by traveling to Rapport I.

What the hell am I doing?

And what the hell was Stuart doing? They had scheduled a specific day for Alden’s first invited visit. It had been pretty clear that Stuart had been making plans for that day. He was going to send me clothing recommendations. More manners stuff. I was going to have a shirt embroidered so they wouldn’t think I was an ingrate who didn’t appreciate one of their most important family member’s honors.

Now he had the school uniform he was wearing and one change of clothes. Fortunately it was the plain brown t-shirt, not something with writing or images on it. He’d been conscious of that since Stuart had mentioned it, and he’d thought he’d be spending more time here at the cube around a bunch of Artonans.

This is just a different bunch of Artonans. No big deal.

The most important bunch of Artonans. The bunch of Artonans that had just had some kind of a disagreement with Stuart that might have been—probably was—about Alden.

There are the nerves, he thought, swallowing as he stepped into a teleportation chamber with an arched ceiling. Hey. Bright side. Social worries are keeping me from being freaked out by the fact that this is my first time teleporting away from Earth since February.

He remembered the person he was before, waving goodbye to Boe and Jeremy. The freshly purchased red coat. The fear/excitement.

“System, if anyone on my priority contacts list calls, send it through at my expense without giving the long distance notification.”

He tried to think of what else there was you had to do before ditching the planet. Surprisingly little in this case.

A text message from Esh-erdi arrived. Alden had felt bad messaging him when he was busy, but he guessed he shouldn’t have since the knight’s replies had seemed unusually pleased with the turn of events.

Although this one said, [Do not let anyone tell you The Elder’s Croak. I will be better at it than them.]

Cleaning up Submerger magic must not be that much of an ordeal if he can spare time for this.

About a minute later, the official invitation to visit the knights’ rapport arrived. Alden had been a little worried that it would look like a summons, complete with payment and a timer.  But it was an image of a handwritten letter from Stuart, hovering in front of him while the System translated the writing into English.

Samuel Alden Thorn of Earth,

Welcoming you as my guest would bring me happiness. Our household would be enlivened by your presence for a day or a year. Our fires are warm, and our bowls are full.

I await your answer in the house of Jeneth-art’h.

Being his son, and of age to offer the house’s welcome,

Sina Stu-art’h

It was followed by a teleportation offer. No timer.

The formality is a lot. But that’s such a welcoming invitation really.

And the Primary finally had a name. Alden would probably think of it one percent as often as he thought “Primary” but it was still good to know.

What do I actually call him to his face if it comes up? Hello, Primary? Primary Jeneth-art’h? Hn’tyon Jeneth-art’h? Mr. Stuart’s Dad?

I was supposed to have a whole month to figure this all out. What’s happened over there?

He had no idea what to expect when arrived at the summonarium. Would there be forty knights and wizards there? Kids? The Primary and his spouses?

Is it weird to be wearing my school uniform? Should I change into the t-shirt?

He took a breath and straightened his outfit. He told himself the art’h family was not scary. He’d served some of them third meal, after all.

“All right. Let’s go to Artona I. I accept the teleport.”

******

He lost awareness of his body, of anything like a world around him. He gained that clarifying awareness of himself.

And, then, he was breathing in the air of another world.

He stood in the art’h family’s huge summonarium, right in the middle of a design painted on the stone floor.

The only other person in the room was Stuart. Alden relaxed a little.

The Artonan boy was wearing a nervous expression and an outfit that was more festive than any Alden had seen him in before. Still nothing as elaborate as some fully qualified wizards wore on a daily basis, but it was noteworthy.

The gray tunic was nearly knee-length, and the wide belt of matching fabric was embroidered in a slightly darker shade. The centerpiece of the embroidery was unusual—a round shape with a lot of spiky protrusions that Alden couldn’t quite identify. And the sleeves of the tunic were wide enough at the wrists to reveal a purple lining when Stuart held his arms outstretched, as he was doing right now in order to present Alden with the physical copy of the invitation he’d just seen a picture of.

Okay. Guest manners on then.

The last time he was here, he’d been a freshly affixed house wanderer. Sore, covered in dirt, and nudged along by the suggestions of the Artona I kernel. Now he was here purely by choice to see Stu-art’h, just hours after hearing that he might never see him again.

If the inviter wanted this to be an occasion, then the invitee could accommodate.

Alden let go of the suitcase handle and stepped forward to accept the small paper sheet with both of his own hands. “Thank you. I’m very glad to be here. I was anticipating our usual conversation. The chance to see you in person is an unlooked-for treasure.”

He was super proud that he knew how to say that last part, and that he knew it well enough to be fairly confident it met the moment.

Stuart smiled and visibly relaxed. The same way a tense Boe might have relaxed if Alden had said, “ ’sup, asshole?”

“Since we have such a large household, we have more than one set of house stationery,” Stuart said, obviously under the impression that Alden was staring so hard at the paper he’d just accepted because he was examining it, not because he was having a major epiphany about the swearing/formality connection. “Aunt Alis, her children, and her spouses all use brown ink for their invitations.”

“I meant to prepare better before I came to see you in person,” Alden said. “I was going to wear the commendation the way we talked about and try to learn the names of all your relatives. And I was going to think of a small gift. A lot of humans do that—a gift for the one who invited them.”

“Your presence is the gift,” Stuart said graciously.

Alden stepped back over to get his suitcase.

“Is your leg well enough for a walk?”

“Yes. It’s not serious.”

“Esh-erdi said you almost drowned.”

Surprised, Alden whipped around. “You talked to Esh-erdi about me? When? Why?

“You told him you were worried I wouldn’t be able to call because of the change in your circumstances. His stated reasons for contacting me were to let me know that he had met you, you were receiving care for your physical injuries, and there was no reason for me to avoid calling out of respect for your perceived busyness with more urgent matters.” Stuart shook his head. “I wasn’t going to respect your busyness anyway. Before I heard from him, I was planning to teleport home from school early to insist that Evul help me check on you.”

I should have realized, thought Alden. Talking to Stuart had been on the same list of things he wanted as school attendance and Tiny Snake food. Esh-erdi had decided to see to all of those things.

“The unstated reasons for his call were slightly different, if I didn’t misunderstand his <<delicate insinuations>>,” said Stuart.

That was a concerning way of putting things. “What did he insinuate?”

“I hope our visit will lead us to that depth of conversation,” said Stuart. “But first, I should take you to your <<cottage>>. And we should discuss our <<itinerary>>.”

I get a cottage? And an itinerary?

“If it pleases you, we will eat together,” Stuart went on as he led the way to the summonarium’s door. “Seven forty-three PM in your human time is good for your third meal, isn’t it? It coincides with when I usually have second meal.”

That was just over an hour from now. “It’s a good time,” Alden confirmed.

“I ordered a few meatpetal dishes since you said you—”

“Meatpetal!”

“—liked that,” Stuart concluded.

******

Stepping out of the summonarium was surreal in a way Alden hadn’t expected it to be. He’d been in a strange state during his one and only other time here. His memory of the trees and the mirrored buildings hidden among them had a clarity to it, but he’d somehow completely missed details that now leaped out to him.

Three of the towering, dark trees that stood around the summonarium had limbs that grew together above the building in a way that looked more like a product of intention than nature. Like they were weaving themselves together to form a second roof.

Another tree up the path had cone-shaped baskets hanging from high branches. They were large enough for people to sit inside, which he knew was at least one of their functions since a trio of Artonans were leaning out of the circular entrance hole in one of them and looking down toward Alden and Stuart. He considered waving, then decided against it.

In a house full of wizards and knights, I guess the fact that there are no ladders up to the tree baskets doesn’t present much of a problem.

He sniffed the air. “It smells really good? Like food?”

Like burnt sugar actually.

“They’re making flatseed candy on the other side of the house. Everyone spends a lot of time outdoors in the summer.”

“I looked up the climate for this rapport one night when I couldn’t sleep. Your summers are so comfortable for humans.”

“It’s pleasant for you today?”

The sun was shining down through the tree branches, and it felt like it was in the low eighties. “It would be perfect if my school uniform had short sleeves, but yes. This is good.”

“It’s pleasant for us, too. When he’s home, my oldest living brother spends the entire season trying to be <<at one>> with the land. We don’t see him until the frost comes.” Stuart looked around. “Now where did she go? I told her to stay at the door…”

Before Alden could ask who he meant, Stuart shouted, “Aaaaalden! Here to me!”

Then he waited with an expectant look on his face. No ryeh-b’t appeared.

“Maybe she didn’t hear you.”

“She has good hearing. Someone’s probably playing with her. Every time I return home from school, I have to remind her and whoever the latest <<child-spoiler>> is that she is at an age where she needs structure.”

He whistled piercingly.

A red head poked itself out of the occupied tree basket up above them. Stuart pointed at the ground beside his feet.

The ryeh-b’t took her sweet time emerging from the basket. Stuart kept whistling and pointing.

Finally, she took to the air. The webbing of her wings glowed like a lantern with the midday sun above her.

“She looks so amazing!” said Alden.

“Keep your arms at your sides,” Stuart said quickly. “She doesn’t have her claw blunts on, and she’ll shred your sleeves if she lands on you.”

Alden put his arms by his side, eagerly waiting for Stuart’s pet to land and not particularly minding if he got climbed on and mildly shredded by a flying dinosaur. She hit the ground and whistled—a lot like Stuart just had—at the sight of him.

Yes, he thought, delighted as the animal came toward him. She remembers me!

Only for Other Alden to run straight for his suitcase like it was the only thing of interest in the whole forest. He had to pull his foot out of the way so she didn’t stomp all over his squishboot in her eagerness to sniff the bag.

She chomped on a zipper and tugged.

“No!” said Stuart.

Other Alden looked at him. She seemed to consider the instruction for a moment before tugging a little more.

No.

The animal finally let go and proceeded to crawl all over the bag with undiminished enthusiasm.

They had to fight her for it to get going again, and Stuart ended up apologizing several times while Alden the human tried to coax the pet into acting like he was as interesting as his luggage.

Stuart led him down a path that existed, like all the others surrounding the art’h’s main house and outbuildings, only because it had been worn by passing feet. And some small thing with wheels, Alden noted as he saw the faint marks of ruts crushing the leaf mulch ahead of them

He looked up at the trees.

Their soft, blade-shaped leaves seemed to start small and grow up to the length of his forearm. All the ones on the ground were brown. Dead. The one he’d been using as a bookmark for months was still a healthy green with a silvery back.

“How long does it take for the leaves to turn brown after they fall?”

“They don’t fall until after they turn brown,” said Stuart. “Usually.”

Other Alden was flapping around ahead of them, doing battle with what looked like the remnants of some decoration or toy that had been tied to a branch.

They had passed three cottage-sized buildings already, only one of which had been in use, if the presence of a worktable and tools beside it was something to go by.

“Are most of these peoples’ houses? Or offices?”

“It’s a mixture,” said Stuart. “Father, Aunt Alis, and Uncle Tesen imagined their children and grandchildren all residing together in one large house when they decided to live as a <<siblinghold>>. But they either underestimated the number of children they would have or they overestimated everyone’s willingness to share space. Someone brings up adding another floor or <<wing>> every day, but it’s so much less disruptive to build the cottages.”

Uncle Tesen was probably the third triplet in the Alis/Jeneth set, Alden thought. The one who’d died.

“The cottage I’ve claimed for you is my favorite of the empty ones. It’s near the stream.”

They traveled for another couple of minutes down a gentle slope, then turned aside from the well-traveled path toward another building with no path leading toward it at all. It was small and rectangular. Built very close to the base of a tree, it was camouflaged by its own mirrored sides and the coat of  fallen leaves on the roof. Out front, two dark wooden chairs faced down the slope, which steepened suddenly as it approached the stream Stuart had mentioned.

“Our closest neighbors, the en family, live in that direction.” He was looking out beyond the stream. “Our families have long been dear to one another. One of my parents was formerly an en.”

Alden’s attention was captured. Stuart called the Primary his father, using the word that indicated a male Artonan who had both sired him and given him care. And a few times he’d used words the Systems usually translated as “parent” or “parents,” implying that he considered at least a couple of other people in the house to be important caregivers in his life. Presumably his father’s spouses.

Never the word for birthmother, though.

Alden didn’t want to ask outright. But he did feel like now that he was actually standing here in their forest he needed to at least know the names and relationships of the main few adults in Stuart’s life. So that he could make a good impression.

“Before you introduce me to your parents, I’d like to know a little about them,” said Alden. “To help me remember who everyone is to each other and you.”

“Do you want to be introduced to them?” Stuart asked, turning suddenly to the cottage to place a hand on the mirrored wall. “Because if you do I will add it to the itinerary. But I don’t think any of them deserve to meet you today.”

He had such a snippiness to his voice that Alden might have been amused by the sudden shift if not for the words themselves.

“Am I not here to meet your family?” he asked. “At least partially…?”

“I was looking forward to introducing you to them all during the visit I was planning for December.”  The hidden door slid inward and sideways to reveal the cottage’s interior. “This afternoon, however, I am looking forward to not being around them.”

Alden swallowed. “Are they angry I’m here? Or is it something about Privacy of the House? Evul-art’h said they’d found out about—”

Stuart paused in the doorway. “To be truthful, my unwillingness to have you sworn to Privacy of the House was the start of extended <<verbal>> warfare. But it would only have been a small disagreement at another time. For a long time now, they have been digging in <<barren>> fields for the <<tenderroot>> that they could hold above the reach of a rich but starving man.”

The need to de-metaphor that made Alden stand in the doorway for several seconds after Stuart had gone in. “You mean they’ve been looking for something you wanted so that they could make you give them something they wanted?”

A bargaining chip.

“Yes. Come inside. We must make sure you have everything you need. Human bedtime will come not long after your third meal.”

“You don’t have to schedule bedtime for me.”

“I did not schedule bedtime,” Stuart said. “I have only arranged my own half of the itinerary to take advantage of your natural bedtime. I will do homework silently and contemplate the day’s events for nine human hours.”

******

The cottage was all window on two sides, with a low ceiling and everything Alden needed. Plus several things he didn’t.

While Stuart followed him around, explaining the significance of every fruit in the “bowl of welcome” on the stand by the door, Alden explored the space. A diaphanous curtain divided the main room in two. The largest bed he’d ever seen in his life was on one side, along with all the closet space and a good fluffy rug.

And on the smaller side was the entryway with its shoe cubby, a floor table with cushions for seating, and a cabinet full of peculiar provisions that ranged from bottles of dried tea and alien cigars to jewelry.

“Are these magic rings?” Alden asked, staring at a peg covered in the things.

“They’re bad ones. Most will probably break after a single use because the enchantments turned out weak,” Stuart said. “But not everyone who stays feels like casting spells. This way they can quickly air out the cottage or send a message to the main house by grabbing a ring. If it doesn’t work, it’s not serious, but if it does, it’s convenient.”

Alden nodded and shut the cabinet. Having seen everything, including the bathroom, there was only one thing left to do. He went back over to his suitcase and grabbed the freshly chewed-on zipper.

Stuart was holding up a pair of berries joined together at the stem. “These two red ones are prusimentha. They symbolize a first meeting. I know this isn’t our first meeting, but since it’s the first one with the bowl of welcome…”

He trailed off as Alden set aside his messenger bag, toiletries, t-shirt, and jeans and pulled out a sack made of soft brown silk. The learning cushion had been delivered in this, and he’d decided to reuse it to keep the cushion from getting scuffed.

He carried it to the stretch of rug on the opposite side of the bed, near the  window.

“You brought the learning cushion with you.” Stuart was still standing on the other side of the curtain. His bright rust-colored eyes were fixed on Alden.

“I was planning to sit on it tomorrow and—” practice some spells in my hospital room “—learn. So I had it with me when you called. Of course I couldn’t leave it behind. Some wandering human might have ass-abused it. Some wandering wizard might have stolen it.”

He knelt on the rug and freed the cushion from its wrapper. Dark leather, gold and silver logograms around the four edges, the hidden pocket he was going to find a promise stick for.

“It’s wonderful,” he said. Still kneeling, he looked back around at Stuart. “Thank you for giving me the leather one. And having it made just a little bigger than normal. And every symbol on it means something so thought-provoking and perfect. I can tell you picked them all yourself. It’s one of the best gifts anyone’s ever given me.”

“You like it that much?” Stuart took a few steps closer.

“I was afraid it was going to get lost in the floods. I was more worried about it than about some of the people I met Friday night.”

“You weren’t!” His face was somewhere between horror and delight.

“I was,” Alden insisted. “And then Evul-art’h called me and said you were having an argument in the big living room, and I’d get to speak to you soon or never again.”

Stuart made an angry noise in the back of his throat. “She shouldn’t have called you just to say <<histrionic>> things!”

“I was afraid she really meant it. And I’d never get to tell you that this means a lot to me.” He touched the cushion with his index finger. “A lot.”

“I wanted to give you something meaningful,” Stuart said, the irritation draining away from his voice just as quickly as it had come. “Something that you would have with you…for a long time.”

He looked down at the fruit bowl and finally set it on the floor, before walking the rest of the way over. He passed through the gap in the curtain, his bare feet sinking into the deep carpet, then he squatted in front of Alden until they were about eye to eye.

“What happened to you?” he asked. “I heard enough from Esh-erdi to know it was something <<unsettlingly>> similar to the <<life trial>> you already endured.”

“I thought a Contract was failing again,” Alden admitted. “Even though it wasn’t. Even though I knew, logically, that it wasn’t. And after Esh-erdi rescued me, for a while I still felt deep inside that…maybe Earth was on the edge of ending.”

He remembered being pulled from the dark water into the light. He had seen a mountain of death frozen against the dawn sky by the power of a single knight. He had seen the results of a healthy Contract, the Triplanets, and Avowed working together.

Just a few hundred dead from an event that could have killed tens of thousands.

He thought there was a comforting lesson there, all laid out in front of him. One he couldn’t absorb, couldn’t feel, even though in his head he knew it to be true.

Stuart’s mouth opened again.

“You’re doing that thing where you take us straight to serious land,” Alden interrupted.

“Serious land?”

“I can’t say mode in Artonan. I had a question for you, too, though. Your sister said you were trying to explain something to your family in the big living room. She said none of them understood. What was it?”

Stuart stared at him. Alden had almost forgotten what an excellent starer he was in person.

“You don’t have to tell me, obviously. But I want to understand whatever it was.”

“I don’t know about that,” Stuart said.

Quick rejection of the offer, Alden thought with a wince. “If that’s how you feel—”

“I said so many things, and I thought they failed to understand most of them in the way I wished for them to be understood. I would have to repeat the entire conversation to make sure I told you whatever thing Evul found worthy of remark.”

“You can do that if you want,” Alden told him.

He watched as purple crawled up Stuart’s pale neck and ears toward his face.  “I couldn’t. I got very angry a couple of times.”

“That makes me even more curious.”

“I used <<unbefitting>> words for reasoning with loved ones,” Stuart said.

And he looked so embarrassed now that Alden couldn’t even think of teasing him about it.

A moment passed. Then, the Artonan rocked back on his heels and sat on the floor with a small thump. “To tell you more about myself is something I want to do. It’s what I planned to do in December. Now, things have shifted. You are already here. But what I should tell you before anything else is…”

“What is it?”

Stuart’s eyes didn’t leave his face. “Maybe you would like the meatpetal first. I didn’t actually mean to turn our conversation to serious matters until after our stomachs were full and we had taken Alden for her evening flight. I was going to approach the subject of our friendship on soft feet.”

“You can just say whatever it is. And then we can recover by eating meatpetal.”

Stuart rested his elbows on his knees. He said, “Most of the people who know me well think I am likely to die soon.”

The cottage went so quiet for a short while in the wake of that statement, that Alden didn’t think either of them was breathing.

What are you saying all of a sudden, Stu-art’h? Stop.

“It’s because of a choice I’ve made. If I turn away from that choice, there would be no risk to me. But I will not turn away.”

Stop.

“I’m telling you because I want friendship with you very much. Maybe…maybe even a friendship of oath one day. But you should know which way I go and that it is not without danger. Do you still want to be friends? If it’s like that?”

Stuart waited, the blush slowly receding. His expression—ever so faintly hopeful—grew gradually stiffer.

“We could still be friends of some sort next year,” he said at last. “After the worst of the danger is past. Others have chosen to wait for that, so I do under—”

“Hush,” said Alden, finally finding his voice but not quite able to meet Stuart’s eyes .

He was sure the Primary’s son looked shocked to have been shushed.

“Do you think you’re going to die?”

“No,” Stuart said in a low voice. “I know myself better than they think. I will endure my trial. I will fulfill myself and <<forge >> myself. And I will live.”

Just a few feet away from them, a curious ryeh-b’t was smashing its red snout to the window, leaving a trail of what looked like snot or saliva all over the transparent surface.

Thank you . I got a whole work day ahead of me and no chapter next schedule while behind left on this!!!!! Why do you have to be such a great writer urrgggg!

Mack

Souper! *reads just in time and will comments later* This really was fantastic. I read the entire thing with a low-level dread that it would end at the next scene break... until it did! Aaaah! I love how Stu being this serious is character trait that is easier to swallow based on his being an alien, and that Alden has endured enough as a young kid that he's able to roll with it. Otherwise it wouldn't feel feasible for them to have these conversations at these ages, but Sleyca managed it. Nice.

As a sleepy author, this was just TERRIBLE writing on my part. I meant to say "Wednesday's chapter." The very next one.

hmmm

I'm a little curious about this unfinished character note that just got removed after I refreshed the page. It's still on the email update though: "Stuart -- one of my favorite characters, also one hundred percent the reason this c"

Baines

nah the experience for Alden was just as bad, just seems easier after the fact for the reader anyway, look how hard Alden ran the second time

glow

This was good food for my Stuart/Alden shipping heart ❤️💕

Milan Seyed Mahmoud

It makes sense. Alden was able to ease into the initial awareness with most of his being already affixed, so he didn't have to feel the sheer agony of it until he was already used to the sensation. Add to that the fact that an 'arth probably has orders of magnitude more authority than a hapless B rank, and you get a much more painful affixation

Jacob

This really, really has awkward first date vibes. And I’m not sure if we’ve had any indication of which way Alden swings? No talk or memories of dating or anything, or even of wanting to.

Clint

Yeah. I think instead of the System affixing their authority, they do it themselves. While in agony. And inventing their own new skill. Sounds crazy hard.

Cyrus McEnnis

I had wondered if Alden would go apocalypse shopping now that he has access to a System store - I imagine he'd get a lot of reassurance from a red lab jacket, and he could get it tagged with his commendation. And it would also put Mehdi's lizard jacket into stark perspective if he starts wearing it at school so that he always has access to it. And he might want to get some Artonian steel capped boots while he's at it.

Karl

Stuart -- one of my favorite characters, also one hundred percent the reason this cottage smells delicious to mishnens

puppy0cam

I feel like an appropriate comparison can be made to that time Lute asked Alden if he was interested in Emilija and said that he wanted to ensure it would not cause conflict between them by pursuing her. The idea that you can choose who you like seemed absurd to Alden then, and I think that Stu is implying similar by giving Alden an out from their friendship. I think it is an absurd task to make a conscious choice to like or dislike someone on a personal level. Alas, Stuart is Stuart. And Alden is Alden.

Allen Polak

Apparently Stu and Alden decided to go straight to serious land. Meanwhile, other Alden... Just a few feet away from them, a curious ryeh-b’t was smashing its red snout to the window, leaving a trail of what looked like snot or saliva all over the transparent surface.

Alibhai

It was 'big sad' last few chapters. And this conversation albeit serious is more light-hearted

Caerold

Serious land

Notye Penyar

Thank you!! I hope Stu is the first other Artonan Alden tells about his own authority sense.

sebsebs

Thanks for the chapter ! I'm sorry I don't think it's appropriate but I read the entire chapter as if there was underlying sexual tension... I mean it started from like a booty call and impulsive decision and everything..,

hmmm

Stuart mentioned hallucinating as a kid, so he's probably got his own thing going on related to that. Super sensitivity is my guess.

Selkie

Thank you!

UpgrayeDD

I'm reposting a comment made by Sleyca in the last chapter comments in response to a post chain about Alden's sexuality or not..... Since it's buried pretty far down, and it contains major story canon, I believe it needs more visability! Sleyca "I feel like my comments on this tend to gradually transform in peoples' memories, like that telephone game where one person whispers a bit of gossip to another and by the time it makes it around the room it's similar but not quite the same. With the wisdom of hindsight, I think I should have completely refused to comment on sex/romance/him/her/aliens/who/what/when/etc... But since I didn't go that route, I'm going to do the thing righter this time. Do I actually need to read this giant comment?: Nope. I feel like when it comes to a story of this length, most people prefer to enjoy it without dwelling on whether or not one specific aspect of it will suit them perfectly. In which case, you won't actually be that interested in this. But you can read if you're curious. Canon Sexuality: Alden has never felt sexually attracted to anyone before. This doesn't come up a lot because it's just not a big deal for him at this point. He was a little embarrassed and touchy about it pre-Thegund. Post-Thegund he's got even less bandwidth to spare for worrying about it because I'm mean to him and put him through a lot. Leaked(?): Alden is on the ace spectrum. I don't know if I should call it a leak, but this was *originally *supposed to be a "just if you want to go look it up on the discord or ask me in DM's" confirmation. It escaped into the wild and started spreading through comments sections as a "Sleyca said this! Why doesn't everyone already know it?!" thing. When I meant for it to be a "go find it out if you want to" thing since so many people were messaging me. It's okay since the textual evidence is already all there. I was careful to sprinkle it in from the early chapters, and there really weren't that many alternative interpretations for his clear thoughts on the matter of Natalie Choir's high appeal. Canon romantic inclinations: Alden hasn't mentioned his thoughts on whether or not he's interested in romance much at all yet. But, really, will there be any romance? What will it look like? How much of it? When?: Wait and see. That's the best answer that I probably should have given all along for everything. Wait and see. I'm currently writing chapter 159. I think, for 99% of you, if you've enjoyed Super Supportive up until now our tastes mesh really well. (Seriously, I love you guys. I get such a thrill when I see you liking all of the things about a chapter that I *hoped* you'd like.) But I need a warning if there's going to be thing-X I don't prefer: You're already reading the story with the aliens with alien parts and customs, the sex ed, the gum, one Ghosten/Medium Snake sex scene, and Lute Velra hoping he was conceived while his parents were involved in a throuple. It's crazy here. The author feels very free to play with the world that's been built and expand on it at length and also very free not to expand any further and let some of it remain backgrounded. Finally, I remain true to characters as well as I can and sometimes follow them down paths I didn't anticipate when I wrote the first sentence of chapter one. When I understand characters better and develop new plot based on that understanding, that can have huge story impacts Swearing on a stack of nonagons that I'll write something or not write something in advance makes me feel super obligated to meet the promise, and it boxes in my writing. So I'd rather not. Well, I'll swear this much: A lot more chapters. A lot of really interesting and deep relationships of many kinds. A lot of excitement from me about all of it."

JJ Hunter

Aw heck, another chapter making me weep the good tears. Here it is, the core of Stu-art'h's loneliness and hope. The reason his fields are so barren his family has been scavenging them hoping against hope for some tenderroot to avert this loss they fear. And here is Stu, who *cares* so darn much, and wants, and will not waiver on this choice even though it feels like it is costing him everything. No wonder it's Stu who sees Alden so clearly, who is the friend Alden can lay his burden of fear down with now, who gives him a portable perfect learning cushion he can bring to each place he goes, each home or school however temporarily, a learning cushion for a lifetime he hopes will be long and learning he hopes will continue. Stu ordered meatpetal for Alden's first meal with him. And made sure the cottage had a fluffy rug. I hope they get to oaths of friendship before either of them goes through another life-threatening trial. I am so invested in this tectonic life-altering friendship for both of them. Thank you for this gift of a chapter and all the feels. Going to go reread it immediately and happily weep some more. Amazing writing. <3

MeYouIt

I feel like if Alden is going to tell someone it has to be now. I think Stuart knowing Alden is also a knigh (in all but name) would help him get through the ordeal of binding his authority. It would also help Alden having someone sharing this journey with. Side note; my personal theory is that knights in training wait longer so that they gain a higher tiered skill. But that it might also be more painful as they get more used to having free, unbound, authority.

AFK37115

thank you!! so happy to meet Stuart again!

Jasus

Will he tell him?

Amber Gregory

*Stares at Stu very seriously* (I can do it too). Stu - you are going to live. Also, you and Alden are not going to wait to be friends. You are friends already and it can't be helped

Alibhai

I think it's a bit early to interpret any romantic inclinations from Alden. Just two boys alone talking about important life decisions... and "friendship oaths"... I see where you're coming from. But still too early.

Bogo

Thank you Slayca ! Eating good today

Baines

no way alden makes it through stu’s recovery/suffering without spilling

Pete

I wonder whether Alden will reveal his secret while talking about this.

Alibhai

Some more serious shopping needs to be done for sure. A go-to bag that is not in system storage but instead on person at all times. Won't help with his anxiety but it always pays to be prepared.

Jeremy Goldberg

I do not ship Stu and Alden at all, but the end of that conversation did feel uncomfortably full of sexual tension.

Clint

Oh, Stu. I have a very large secret to share with you as well. I had imagined we would get tattoos to share secrets first, but that seems silly now. You trusted me to keep your family’s secrets without a tattoo. And we are friends already, without any formal agreement or binding tattoo requiring it so… *Authority greeting*

Blorcyn

I’m only half way through so I’m not reading other’s comments yet. But here’s a thought I’m thinking. We’re well used to noticing that Artonans use two eyes for full focus mode and the rest of the time one eye may be elsewhere. From an Artonan’s perspective, I wonder if humans are uncanny valley or like super cute baby elephants using their trunk to pick things up. To them, we must always be giving everything we do laser like focus. They look at us using both eyes on everything and I wonder if we come across as a species of Vandys or a species of toddlers. Either way, based on how they treat humans it must be relatively charming. But still, yeah. Back to the chapter I go.

Faiir

While I'd rather they stay friends, I feel like if your partner is a different species it might matter more than their sex?

Brian

That wouldn’t really make sense, the Knights are all supposed to have one of the original 300 skills without limits. If the artonian’s initial affixation is more dangerous than Alden’s, my guess is it’s either because they are more accustomed to having full access to their full authority. So, having it all bound is a bigger shock than than Alden gradually becoming aware of his authority and realizing the lion’s share was already locked. Additionally, I wonder if the *first* affixation it might be possible for the prospective Knight to resist or falter in such a way for the procedure to be immediately dangerous or lethal.

ACX

Alden has to confess to Stuart after he has opened up like that. He simply has to. I can't believe we will have a skipped chapter tight after this , I don't know how I will make it to next sunday

Joseph Collins

I love the way that you write Artonians so much.

Desidia

I know Esh-erdi said to let him explain the story of the Elder's Croak, but I'm really hoping that Alden tells Stuart all of his secrets, at least the ones he's allowed to say. Alden could help Stuart through his first year, help him learn to love his skill. I think Alden would be good at that.

Clint

Definite tension. Can’t tell whether it’s sexual, romantic, or more of a “will he not want to be my friend when he understands the secret that keeps everyone around me at arms length?” tension. I suspect a big part is Stu worrying that Alden will agree with his family, or that if he doesn’t it’s just because he doesn’t understand what it means to affix his authority.

Faiir

What? No sexual tension at all. Romantic maybe, probably.

Guus van der Borg

"Stuart smiled and visibly relaxed. The same way a tense Boe might have relaxed if Alden had said, “ ’sup, asshole?”" A. This was hilarious, I laughed my metaphorical ass off. B. It really shows that people appreciate different ways of interaction.

MooMoo195

It probably was going to say why this chapter took so long to release

John D Jones

@ Jacob Thus far Alden doesn't swing. His "pendulum" stays stuck at the top because he's both kind of asexual and kind of traumatized. He cares about Natalie, Maricel, Lute and Stu-art'h but he isn't sexually attracted to any of them.

MooMoo195

So it seems like knights affixation is something they have to do to themselves rather than the system.

SlimCognito

Thank you for the chapter.

GryphonKnight

Sleyca is so good at avoiding the idiot ball trope ☠️ By meticulous world building, and a few chosen one events, Sleyca has set up all sorts of confusion, and drama, without making Alden, or Stu, idiots 🧮

GN

Thank you for the chapter. I agree with some comments I have seen: this would be the perfect time for Alden to come clean about his auriad, at least with Stu'arth. At the same time, I am sure what you have planned will be amazing and surprising.

Guus van der Borg

For some reason I can't rightly explain, this chapter made me think that Alden and Stu will do the 'breaking themselves' thing together at some point. (Can't remember the Artonan word) In the first conversation it was mentioned, it was hinted that it wasn't a romantic thing (at least, not a marriage adjacent thing). But it's obviously something that binds two people together very strongly and it helps them support each other. So far the story has thrown no small amount of hints that Alden and Stu are/will be significant emotional support for each other as they tread the path to knighthood. I definitely see them as some sort of magically bound buddy cops at some point. They'd work in a buddy cop movie too. Stu the serious one, Alden the snarky one.

Cyrus McEnnis

Two go bags. One in system storage, one that's on his person at all times. He really needs to lean into Gustavo's advice - a Rabbit is always prepared. And having one bulkier go bag in system storage with food, clothing, footwear and other bulky items that you couldn't really carry around on a daily basis would give him some much needed agency for when the next Aldenocalypse swings around. Personally I'd be going hard on EDC items as well - paracord bracelet, multitools, footwear that's both comfortable and sturdy, tinder for his fire starting spell, multiple lights, a legal first aid kit or dispensation to carry his Artonian one legally, a survival blanket, a harness he can use to attach objects to himself while leaving his hands free, and enough carabiners to moor a super yacht would definitely be on my list for stuff I have on me for Mr Case. Justin Case.

John D Jones

Jeneth-art'h. Yes. The Primary finally has an actual name! I did appreciate Alden's concern about what to call him if/when they met face to face. Maybe it'll turn out that he's just Jeneth from the block. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RciKM866Rhk&ab_channel=JenniferLopezVEVO

Blorcyn

So so excellent. And some progression. Stu’arth is giving his sincere best. Mother wants them to be friends together. What will Alden do next Sunday? Is it time to be honest yet? I think … no? Or rather, I think Alden will think no.

glow

I thought it had an undercurrent of romantic tension, I don't see any sexual tension here, not from Alden and not from Stu either.

JJ Hunter

I'm really hoping Alden asks what's involved with swearing an oath of friendship and commits on the spot. I think that would mean even more to both of them, that hell or high water there for you solidity.

Hyacinth

STU WHAT- nuh uh, Alden cares about you, it’s a done thing, you are already Friends, no you are not allowed to die, and parroting another Artonan: “You have an obligation!”

Chillitsagame

Histrionic is the word of the day!

WannaBeATree

Oh man, I really am not sure how to act here. A good set-up. On the one hand, close people are usually very good in predicting ones behaviour. On the other hand they think he is weird, so they don't actually understand him. Alden himself is siding with Stu's family or at best has no idea what to think. Adding to that his BoaB and authority sense might actually allow him to predict whether a potential knight can endure affixation or not, once Alden picks specific upgrades, by contrasting the received burden to his own. I have no idea where this will go, except not where I think it will. Very existing.

WannaBeATree

Maybe that was the hope of the mourner class? Though how would Boe play into this? And Kibby?

Sleyca

"one hundred percent the reason this chapter was late and the next is going to be the skip" I LOVE Stuart, but he has a very interesting personality that's related to backstory you guys don't have access to + alien + he's highly informed about things readers and Alden can't be yet. It makes him extremely difficult to write. Without you all having the same knowledge about his character I do, there's a risk for some of his quirks to come off as "weird for the sake of weird" as opposed to being true to character. So I have to avoid that. And there's also the fact that Stuart does have a lot of qualities that can look contradictory on the surface -- he's smart but sometimes naive, he's taking these big swings at intensity 99.9 levels of maturity but he still screws up, and he's nervous about some simple things but wildly self-confident once he's sure he's in the right. See: him spending however long agonizing over the perfect fruit bowl before Alden arrived vs. the fact that he seemed to be ready to hogtie Joe and deliver him to the Senate personally when he decided he knew what needed doing Hazel Velra, as a contrast example, is a really interesting character to me too but her ego is so overwhelming that she tends to respond to things in very consistent ways. She is always worried about her own personal feelings in the moment, and it shows. Stuart has a ton of different pressures, cares, and notions weighing on him; so his response to any given thing can look very different depending on which one is taking precedence. He's cool. I can't wait to write more of him, and I'm sure I'll get better and better at it since I do think he's one of the absolute best characters in the serial. But for now, I tend to stare at his lines for a realllly long time before I get them just right.

Clint

Huh. I might have to go back and reread. I know knights need a skill that can grow without limit, and that the Avowed-are-saviors faction built 300 of those into the System, but I didn’t think those were the only possible limitless skills, just the ones made available to Avowed.

Wiggles1

I think it's canon that you can't affix your own authority.

WannaBeATree

He'll probably get along with Kibby, now that you mentioned it. He even has his own Alden.

Guus van der Borg

Boe, not sure yet. Regardless of his U, he'll probably be a strong source of regular emotional support. Kibby, probably the same with being regular support. I doubt the story will reach the point where Kibby affixes, unless we get some serious timeskips. So probably no extra-special magical shenanigans there. Except, of course, if Alden continues his education as village wishing well (ya'know, with Gorgon). Then all bets, and speculations, are off.

Calvin

Knights don't necessarily have one of the original 300, since those 300 were made for avowed. Knights could have custom skills with the same specs or better as the original 300, the only requirement is for it to have no cap

Rob

Hey buddy want to go through the worst torture you've ever felt?

John Koor

I'm still fixated on the bone fragment. How every time they meet and Alden doesn't return it or at least mention it, it becomes that much bigger of a Crack in their relationship when it is eventually revealed. Is it possible that the bone fragment is the "bargaining chip" the family is looking for? We saw the significance of a tree near your birthrate in the healing site. How much more significant would they see gathering all missing pieces that you were born with as a form of body purity?

Tycho Green

Had to laugh out loud after reading the sentence. Immediately thought of the Amber Heard trial like the word is some kind of prompt for it.

Justin

Oh great and glorious cliffs of wonder! How you torture us so with your lovely climb and pathway leading right to the edge. But give us no views of wonder till Wednesday/Thursday. Great chapter! I enjoyed how awkward they both are and that Stu is avoiding family. I won't even guess what will kill him, as I assume I'll be wrong. Thanks!

Calvin

Alden wasn't trchnically red halo'ed but the system should definitely be paying him for saving Zeridee. I wonder how much he would get compared to Thegund...

Calibri

This was so beautiful. And it perfectly sets up Alden telling Stuart allll about his own affixation. “Your presence is the gift” and “I wasn’t going to respect your busyness” were such cute lines too 💜

Cyrus McEnnis

Yeah I was thinking that there might be some compensation - not necessarily from the System given Alden wasn't summoned, but possibly from Zeridee's family directly. But then again, from certain angles one could argue the compensation should go from Alden to ZD - I could make a fairly convincing argument that Alden's << childlike stubbornness >> put her in the position where she got hurt.

QY

Wait...die very soon? Does the knight affixation bring immediate danger? In Alden's case, it was extremely painful but brings no physical damage. Stu had hallucinations as a child and was mentioned to be very sensitive authority senses... so the ritual might be extra painful for him...Is his family afraid of him commiting suicide just like his sister? Or is it more like an outside danger (like a more literal trial). So many things to think about.

Clint

I still think Alden is going to eat it — remember that Gorgon made Alden more stable with the ritual. It’s possible that Alden can help Stu survive the affixation somehow using the cannibal demon ritual thing. Hard to tell.

kaalveiten

D'awwwwwwww. I love it.

Calvin

No other resource world species have been mentioned as having double focus like Artonans so you'd think they would be used to the singular focus of other species by now though

Clint

BoaB will definitely let him take some of the existential pain — but only by carrying it himself. And never putting it down. I don’t want that for Alden. I wonder if we’re about to have a rehash of the Boe conversation about caring about your own wellbeing in the same way you care for that of your friends. Edit to add: Huh. I wonder if Alden eating the bone would let him get around tattoo-enforced secrecy.

Curtis

“The unstated reasons for his call were slightly different, if I didn’t misunderstand his <>,” said Stuart. Any thoughts on what this might mean? The obvious interpretation is that he thought Alden needed company/comfort. But my tinfoil hat idea is that Esh suspects Alden of having an authority sense.

Clint

Huh. Good idea. So very Artonan. They made a class entirely built around helping knights bear their existential suffering… then couldn’t use it because they don’t want to tell Avowed about that pain..,

Dundinho

Thank you for the chapter

Barrett Fogarty

Ah the Leaf! It reminded me of this quote, "There are other forces at work in this world, Frodo, besides the will of evil." Between Gorgon and the Grove, Sleyca's plots run deep.

Clint

Huh. So, maybe a knight-candidate contorts his/her authority into the desired shape and then asks Mother to affix it just like that…

Kim Enteiu

If feels like his family is terrified of losing Stu because they already lost Sena. I think it’s not improbably the way they lost Tesen too. Talking about the first year of danger makes me feel like it’s the approach of the first affixation after the initial << forging >> one, which Alden understands the fear of well.

hercule pyro

Tinfoil hats are for people who's paranoia leads them to believe in things that aren't true. Esh is trying to get Alden some mind healing.

JJ Hunter

@Sleyca, "hogtie Joe and deliver him to the Senate personally" is giving me the most AMAZING mental image right now, thank you for that! Hogtied Joe, looking distinctly scuffed: "Be a good lad and let walk in myself, Stu-art'h." #1 New Best Friend Winner and Future Hn'tyon Sina Stu-art'h, looking like he could continuing lifting Joe above his head for ages as he easily outruns several university carts: "This is the fastest way besides teleporting. Please endure a little longer." The tiny image of Alden in Stu's head getting menaced by a magically enraged ocean: "Help, help! I'm about to drown and won't be talk on Monday like we were planning!"

Temp One

Fantastic chapter! It's pretty disheartening to learn Stu's friendship problems are essentially because everyone thinks he's going to die. Poor dude.

SkyGold

I bet Stuart's family tried to convince him not to go forward with his decision to become a knight by using his friendship with Alden. Before our favourite rabbit, Stuart's life was dedicated purely to preparing himself to become a knight like his sister, but now his relatives can finally argue he has 'something to live for'

happypotamus

There’s definitely underlying tension, and it's easy to map it onto the romantic or sexual tension typically felt on a first date, since that’s the context we’re most familiar with. To disentangle this, a useful exercise might be to imagine how the chapter would have been different if the underlying tension was present but wasn’t romantic/sexual in nature. For example, it sounds like Stuart intends to hang out in the cottage being silent while Alden is sleeping. Maybe that’s motivated by Stuart wanting to cherish the friendship while he has it, but it is also quite romantic :)

Barrett Fogarty

Where do you suppose Drusi-otta might be?

Tungsten

loooooooooooove Stu, love the chapter, Im soooo00 looking forward to the next one and everything at the rapport!!!

Josh Delgado42

Thank you for the chapter! First off, I love how quickly Stuart goes into Serious Land. As if he has no time left and cherishes the moments he does have. And I'm terrified and dying to know what his conversation was like and what his family wants from him. I have the sneaking suspicion they want him to not go on his current path for his own safety. Love the attention to detail you give here as you write a lot more descriptively. Alden's on an alien planet, it makes sense that in a relatively calm situation he would notice the native flora. And that epiphany of the difference in formality for Stuart vs Boe was hilarious. Fascinating to see what puts people at ease. Other Alden was super cute. Can't wait for Sunday. Thank you!

Clint

Left behind on Matadero, most likely. Unless she got very special secret permission to tag along to the art’h residence. Remember her stated purpose was to keep an eye out for the ambassador’s politicking.

Batty Corvina

Stu and Alden are so sweet. So polite and interested in each others lives. They're just two lonely, overly serious boys with burdens to bear. Hopefully they'll be able to bear them better together. ❤️

Clint

I think they’re encouraging him to form a friendship with Alden in hopes that he’ll be more careful of his own survival, knowing his death will hurt Alden.

Anton Shomshor

Aw! Other Alden is drawing nose art!

Anon.

I am not sure you're not reading in too deeply, but if you are right, that and the tendency of Stuart to single-focus seems like a dangerous enough combination to explain his family's worries.

Mathieu Deg

If I had to guess, the first attunement is the hardest, and has a highest chance of knights not being able to hold on. Perhaps that is the trial Stuart is referring to. "Others have chosen to wait for that" seems to indicate all knights have to take part in it. Unless there is another requirement to become a knight which has a danger of death. Can definitely imagine Alden revealing everything to Stuart though.

Batty Corvina

That's what I thought. Will be interesting to see how he reacts when he finds out Alden is in a similar boat.

Batty Corvina

Also Mother absolutely knew what she was doing setting these two up to be friends. Anticipated both would need the support of another like themselves.

MooMoo195

Well, one clue I can think of for it being the case is the fact that all affixations are crafted by artonans, and submitted into the systems repository. It would make a lot of sense if a knights affixation is something they craft for themselves.

ACX

English is my second language, what have I unintentionally implied? ;)

Ella Hughes

oh I just had a thought about the breaking themselves together thing. could it be going through affixation together? idk if there's more to it than just having jt happen at the same time in the same place orrrr. probably someone else has already thought of this

Tycho Green

Immediate danger in the sense that only after one actually experiences affixation as a wizard they know what they are truly in for. Imagine someone drilled into the nerves of one of your teeth for say twenty seconds, penetrating all the way through. You know it would be so painful that you couldn’t put it into words, but merely conceptually. Now this will happen once a year. After Stu goes through the experience he will either persevere or, what his family thinks he will do, gift his authority through the ritual like Sina did.

BeautifulBusinessBoi

I feel like it’s been hinted at that Stu is the Artonan version of neurodivergent as we’ve never seen him split his focus as his eyes are always looking the same direction. Even when Stu was talking with Alden and trying to be formal about it, Stu was looking away at a second screen as he got the environmental conditions right for his buddy. This is probably why his family is worried about him surviving, because the pain will always be present in his consciousness, instead of being able to be shunted into only half of his mind. Luckily, the Mother encouraged a friendship to the only person in the universe who could understand the struggle of living with it in the back of his mind every day ❤️

happypotamus

If Alden were to affix in the next few days, adding a facet to help Stuart bear his affixation pain, would he have enough time to recover before Stuart affixes in December? He can’t do it because if the other knights found out, it would then be "endless misery" for Alden (for the sake of the universe). But I’m curious if it's something he has to contemplate.

Guus van der Borg

That's probably part of it. But I bet it's more fundamental than that. Remember, your authority is your ability to exert your own existense. In a metaphysical way it IS you. If you break it down and rebuild it together with someone else I bet you are fundamentally connecting yourself with the other person. A bond so close you literally become part of one another. It's been implied that Lind and Esh read (part of) each other's mind at all times and can communicate with each other at any time. They probably share mindspace. In a very real way, they stopped being two separate people

Anthony Lutz

It probably is that, since Alden had a 16 hour first affixation and that was without the awareness/pain of what was truly happening. His second was at least "several hours" based on in writing. Knights are probably not that dissimilar when they are all "making themselves so unique" if we can use mothers description of alden

Phlinn

Anyone else thinking that Stuart will find that he can't cope, and that Alden will end up consuming his shard of bone and asking gorgon to use his abilities to sacrifice a portion of Stuarts authority to remove the affixation without creating an abomination? An ability that already destroys authority seems perfectly suited to that task.

Clint

I wonder if he even can consume affixed authority for that. It would be such a profound change to knighthood if they could ‘retire’ like that, losing much of their authority, but not having to die.

Shingi

It wouldn't work because Stu would reject the wish, remember Kibby had a choice that involved spending some of her authority and she subconsciously rejected it HARD. Stu's desire to be a knight is just as strong such that he'd refuse any wish that would do otherwise

Matt DiMeo

My theory is that knight candidates do their own affixation rather than having Mother do it, and it’s hard and awful and dangerous.

Nim

"Confess to him" is sometimes (but not exclusively, you didn't use it wrong) used as shorthand for "admit previously unstated romantic feelings"

Polar Sleuth

Because of how limited our popular medias are, there are only a handful of "tensions" we read or see or hear. Yes, there is tension here. And, as humans, we attempt to plug such experiences into a comfortable box, but this box isn't common enough to be comfortable. This feels like a sort of "make or break" moment, when two people will fall together or deny their current bonds and go their separate ways. But this isn't a romantic "kiss him already" moment. It kinda feels that way, but we know that isn't going to happen, but that is the most comfortable box.... Other comments are flailing around to find a "better" box. But I think all of those are too much for this moment. Sleyca writes a much slower story. Truths will be shared, but I doubt anything so "dramatic" as a major revelation will happen. Both Alden and Stu are still poking at the "how much is too much" ball of unexplainable secrets which lie between them. "I'm a knight!" is far too deep inside that ball for Alden. And Stu cannot explain something which only Artonans should know. So, we will get surface truths for the time being, even though we will crave for them to pull something deeper out of that ball.

Nim

... And actually now I'm wondering about the origin of that, because I've never actually heard it used that way by a native speaker outside of stories

Reincheck

Thanks for the chapter Sleyca. Rest well. The reappearance of the meatpetal is nice. Hope Alden gets to enjoy it. I believe in Stu-Arth, he's gonna make it. They will make the friendship oath someday like true besties and Boe will have a rival.

Emily Gurnavage

Thats my thinking, here. Alden's first affixation with his authority sense was bad - but I bet its even worse when you have been able to sense your authority since birth or childhood and then spent your life building it up. Plus - Alden was already an avowed. He did things in reverse. As an avowed, the vast majority of his authority was already bound and he couldn't feel it when that happened at selection. Stu will feel the initial change to an avowed as well, which is surely a much larger deal.

Blind

Stu'art has no chill in the best way.

Julian Bello

He's going to affix. Stuart is going to affix!

N Johnson

You break my heart, this story is soooo captivating. I only wish there was a"super patreon" where I could instantly keep on reading. Sleyca, we are willing to wait however long it takes so you can keep up the quality of this wonderful story. For my own sanity, however, I am going back to the beginning so I don't have to wait impatiently for next Sunday!

Tungsten

Thank you for your insight into Stu. I love him to bits, too! He's my favorite character (sorry, Alden, I love you too).

CentaureHeart

That last sentence really brought down the heaviness of the scene, that was really funny. Thanks for the chapter !

Emily Gurnavage

Gorgon explained on the Moon though that when using that ritual, Alden is meant to *die* and his corpse get eaten by the recipient. Gorgon was only able to do it for Alden without those steps because Gorgon is the last and most powerful of his species and was a priest/shaman/wizard who knew all the ins and outs of it. Hard doubt Alden can manage to work around requirements in a ritual he doesn't even understand and at such a low level of personal power still.

John D Jones

I think Stu's friendship problems stem from the fact that he's genuinely an odd, possibly neuroatypical person even as an Artonan and that he's the youngest son of the most important person in the universe, so he gets a lot of fame/power chasers wanting to be "friends" with him (imagine if almost everyone in Alden's life was basically a version of Winston). His family thinking that he'll crack up and beg for death after becoming a hn'tyon doesn't help matters.

Sébastien Kingsbury

Who wants to bet that alden, bearer of all burdens, figures out how to use his power to temporarily take on the burden of suffering that comes from affixing for stu?

Alexander Dupree

I don’t think that’d be good since a big part of that is growing to fit the affixed spell forms (whatever the magical dimension authority binding is called). Not feeling it probably won’t allow Stu to get comfortable with it.

Alexander Dupree

Alden should absolutely not give him cryptic hints he knows what’s happening and oddly effective suggestions that Stu can’t quite put together but are irritatingly effective.

Jim

There is the appearance of extra-dimensional spaces with the chapter that Esh-erdi pulled out something from his << bag of holding >> (I'll have to go look up the chapter) and also when the 3 thieves were talking about stealing the flyer. So, I think Alden needs his bug-out bag in a ring or pouch that he can take with him at all times.

Trek

This chapter kind of explains why Zeridee reacted the way she did when she heard Alden say that he’s friends with Stuart. Like, imagine a society where we know which people may likely choose to suicide one day and that, as their friend/family, we’re forced to be extremely understanding with their decision if they come to it instead of trying to convince them to not do it. It’s similar to how Stu is left to deal with the after-effects and trauma of seeing his sister get mercy-killed, except being their friend means that you made the choice to bear that burden. That said, I think Alden hearing that Stu’s family thinks he won’t last long after affixing shocked Alden because it felt as if they were saying that Alden wouldn’t last long either. It’s like the most experienced and knowledgeable people on Alden’s situation are saying, ‘no, you’re being naive if you think you can do this several times more’. Hearing Stu say with conviction that he can endure it and live is probably comforting to Alden and cancels some of that notion.

Jim

See, I see this as the beginning of an epic friendship. This is Frodo and Sam feeling each other out to see where their boundaries lie. Getting comfortable. This is Crocket and Tubbs when they started out as rookies at the Police Academy. They are starting to get comfortable together. Stretching out. Learning how each one ticks and being accommodating.

Shaun Clark

I want a scene where Esh-Erdi explains to Alden school exactly where he's gone, and Wyatts a bad idea to try to hold back his favourite rabbit.

Andrew Simpson

I really hope Alden reassures stu by sharing his wizardness. This is the chance for him to bond, and even without using BoaB, but instead Alden's inordinately excellent emotional intelligence, a chance for him to help Stu bear the burden of his coming trial. Be a friend and a support in a way literally no one else can. Alden, uniquely, can a peer he respects and trusts, and one that can genuinely *empathize* with him. One that can take the journey with him.

Alex Scriber

I have jury duty today. I hope all the jurors and judicial officials are as thoughtful and considerate as Stu and Alden.

Phlinn

Kibby did NOT have a choice. The wish to restore her family was unachievable, and it was intrinsically impossible to lose authority to strengthen authority. It costs authority to provide a wish. Losing authority in order to lose authority, on the other hand, is perfectly aligned

Cyrus McEnnis

That would be ideal, for sure - hopefully Alden can afford a chaos-rated dimensional pocket!

Jim

That's a great thought. We can't even know or imagine what type of assumptions and cultural projections that they may be putting on humans because we look so similar.

ACX

There are likely tons of knights with his skill. If It were possibile they would do that, so it's unlikely Alden will manage what thousands of other knights haven't, even if sometimes beginners manage to do things because they don't know they are impossible. I think it's more likely he figures how to do something with Gorgon's gift, for example, if sacrificing bound authority is possible he might become able to remove an affixation without killing the awoved/knight, but it seems a bit OP so I don't know if Sleyca will go for it

Shaun Clark

Reviewed a bunch of songs to try to find one that fits this one, finally settled on Bad day, by Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Jim

Yeah, this is how I see it. The beginning of a friendship like Rand, Mat and Perrin. A bond that will stand the breaking of worlds, but it has to start somewhere. Alden, Stu'art'h and Boe against Chaos.

Charlie

1. Assuming Alden still has the gum he could, potentially, affix in the next couple days and let Stuart understand what it feels like - to better let Stu determine whether he's prepared to be a Knight. 2. I'm glad that Alden didn't discuss things that might still be sensitive on Earth such as what happened to Zeridee and the deaths. I don't think it would be a problem if he told Stu but it was a responsible choice.

Shawn

If you reread the Mother chapters, Alden is given a view of Knights committing ritual suicide to avoid that pain. Stu's sister Sina was one of the knights who killed herself.

Justin

That's a thought about the gum. And man that would be shit for both of them. I don't think he's mentally ready for affixing right now.

Shawn

My theory is that Esh really thought Alden was falling apart mentally. Remember his ability is about how things crack which makes me think that while the obvious use case is causing a demon to crack and fall apart, he's able to sense the cracks in Alden's psyche much like how when Alden expands BoAB he will be able to bear emotions and magic as well as objects.

Desidia

Off topic, my mind's wandering towards Boe. I'm imagining a situation where Alden needs to go to Aulia for legal help, if Boe ever gets caught.

Poiuy

Better Alden is such a good Alden.

Sloth

From Trurem on the Discord, an AldenxStuart ship edit of this chapter: But you should know which way I go and that it is not without danger. [...] Stuart waited, the blush slowly receding. [...] hopeful—grew gradually stiffer. [...] “Hush,” said Alden [...] Just a few feet away from them, a curious ryeh-b’t was smashing [...]

N Johnson

Does "Bearer of all Burdens" mean that somehow Alden will be able to bear some of the burden of Stuart's affixation? Can Alden actually bear that much burden?

Anon.

It's fun to imagine her standing invisible in the corner with an invisible hanky wiping away tears, though.

QY

That does explain it...albeit sounds unnecessarily inefficient/dangerous

QY

"Know what they are truly in for" is a good way to put it. Never considered that as I thought Sina was already a couple years into knighthood when she took her own life.

Charlie

@Justin I agree. It's too early, Alden's not in a great place mentally, and his skill leveled enough to allow him more breathing room. That being said, if it keeps Stu from dying it might be worth it.

Andrew Khitry

Alden is inexperienced in this kind of magic, but when things go south, he just happen to know one chained alien who could possibly help…

Baumlaus

oh... OH... that might... !!! Maybe he can at some point help Knights in general with their burden! That seams so likely (and cool). =D

Fabel

Just kiss already.

Clint

Likely, but that should be off in the ‘bad corner’ of the skill, which Mother urged him to ignore until he was much stronger.

QY

Wow good theory! I have a vague feeling that the single focus is also tied to childhood halluciations. Don't know if its a side effect of him being extra sensitive (in authority) or its cause

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Alden is such a persistent anti-luck bomb that I’m worried about the fate of Artona I or at least the art’h rapport

JJ Hunter

Or Esh-erdi, who may be better positioned to help than Aulia these days.

MooMoo195

"He looked up at the trees.  Their soft, blade-shaped leaves seemed to start small and grow up to the length of his forearm. All the ones on the ground were brown. Dead. The one he’d been using as a bookmark for months was still a healthy green with a silvery back.  “How long does it take for the leaves to turn brown after they fall?”  “They don’t fall until after they turn brown,” said Stuart. “Usually.”" I can't help but feel like this passage is more important than it initially seems, but I don't know how yet

ppbrro

Lonely day - soad Although is not Alden worst day by far, it is fitting.

Clint

His desire to be a knight is strong now. I can’t imagine a time when he both desires to be a knight *and* desires to die rather than continue being a knight. To be clearer, I can imagine Stu talking himself into such a contradiction, but he’d just need someone like Alden to again point out how his “self-sacrificing courage” is really just him being a prick and making things harder for his loved ones.

SunderGoldmane

I’m sure we will find out how important it is when Alden reveals he has one as a bookmark.

Rodmin

Oh right, the sex-gum. That would be so nice if they took that together.

NameGame

Out of all of this chapter, I most relate to the ryeh-b’t. I, too, smear my face across windows leaving a trail of snot. That's on my good days. Thanks for the chapter.

Unavowed

I like the idea of the freely given leaf being a vote of confidence similar to Mother granting him access to the super special knight uniforms.

Justin

Oh man knowing the primarys name might be helpful. If asked whos house were you at? Who's Stuart's dad/who did you meet? Jeneth. Way better than say 'the primary'.

Josh Brooks

Pro tip: after reading the newest SS chapter, reread all of Super Supportive! The week-long break will be less long that way

ImNotHere

[“I wasn’t going to respect your busyness anyway. "] I like Stu even more 🤣

Alex

They actually have frost. For some reason, since the Artonans prefer super hot climate, it hadn't occurred to me that they might actually have real winters

Alex

Earth leafs also change colors before they fall. Alden is a city boy, maybe he's never been in a forest

David Burchfield

Also they are probably affixing a much greater quantity (and perhaps quality) especially in Stu'art'h's case.

Nathan Rice

He said that he would forge himself. That puts a lot more weight behind the idea that knight affixations are custom and not from a skill list or something.

Alex

Im guessing Stu is about to affix? But that doesn't make sense either. He's from a family of knights, affixing isn't weird. And I think they already showed him using stuff without an interface? Though I'm not sure I'm not mixing him up with some other knights. I wonder what his weird scary trial is gonna be. Affixing seems too normal to have everyone this worked up.

Sunden

I disagree. I'm betting the second affixation is the hardest. The first one you aren't prepared for; you have no scale with which to measure it yet. The second one includes a phase that the first doesn't: the "before" phase. Even if the "during" and "after" are just as bad, the fear and anticipation during the "before" phase of the second affixation and all future ones would make it worse imo.

Chris Nameless

I have enjoyed this series until now. I have no interest in reading a homoerotic or bisexual fantasy which this series seem to be headed towards. I wish you the best but this clearly not for me.

HumbleBee

i see i need to read the part where Alden and Stuart have their call again so I can count the times he calls Stu a friend

Sunden

It's the "hush" that led to this probably. Maybe it's a natural thing to say in Artonan, but from an English perspective it sounds strange.

Alibhai

I mean... it has to happen, doesn't it? It would make sense, narratively. Both of them will have someone they can lean on. Two fledgling Knights.

Obbu

As some extra tidbits: In ch62, it mentions that the Knight Rapport 1 is to the very far north of the main continent, and the vision of Sina-art'h dying had snow in it. Also, Lind-otta's perspective in ch119 mentions that the last time she and Esh-erdi visited the first rapport there was a Blizzard.

Matt V

Given how difficult his affixation was after Thegund for Alden, I can't even imagine what the first affixation must be like for hn’tyons. Alden only found his authority after it had already been chained. For Stu and others like him, they grow up knowing their authority. It's an intrinsic part of themselves. They are submitting themselves to be chained in order to fight the Chaos threat. It's easy to see why Stu's family is so worried, especially after our glimpse into Sina's choice in the memory. Most people, myself included, have been reading Stu as being neuroatypical, and I wonder if maybe Sina was as well. That would certainly add to the depth of worry that his family holds over his decision to affix. It would also make Sina's passing all the more painful for Stu is she was the one he identified with and related to the most growing up. I've been assuming that Stu is someone Alden would trust with his wizard abilities at some point in the not-too-distant future. I had been thinking it would either come in the December visit just before Stu's affixation or else sometime shortly after while Stu was really struggling with it all. Given Alden's emotional turbulence at the moment, though, I won't be at all surprised if it all comes out now. If it does, that will only further cement Stu's decision to affix so that Alden is not going through it all alone. Then they can help bear each other's burdens.

BaguaBrady

I want Alden to offer to help bear his burdens, but I think there's quite a few conversations between now and that offer

Alibhai

If he does tell.Stewart is going to be the first person. The systems don't count.

Alibhai

Authority Poke is the way to go. ...That sounds wrong. All those comments about sexual tension in the scene and I can't help but be conscious of it.

WannaBeATree

I like how it can be viewed as a methaphor for human Alden's subconsious and near future decision.

Ian T Hathaway

Stuart is so smitten and they're both so painfully oblivious I think it might hurt less if I actually tore off my face, I love this so much

Alibhai

A lot of other commenters seem to agree. I can't help but play devil's advocate. Affixation is shown to be a very painful process If you have authority sense. I simply cannot imagine anyone maintaining Focus under that much pain. If anything, the only difference between Artorians and humans would be the different class quotas. They probably get to select whatever they want. No trading or other shenanigans are necessary.

Jeff Scott

So his family was trying to make him give up affixing and becoming a knight because they were afraid he would choose early ceremonial suicide?

Fleisch

I wonder if he isn’t going to affix right away and instead choose to wait in order to gain more strength.

Taulsn

Affixing isn’t normal at all, it’s just more common in that family. Stu has the eye implants that some wizards get to interface with the contract.

MooMoo195

True ,It could be that knights get access to more specialized classes that are tuned to them. Or it could be that mother helps them guide the process of affixing to lessen the burden. At this stage I am just spit balling but any of these options seems likely to me at least.

Alex

Yeah, but he wasn't arguing about it with strangers, he was arguing with his family. His family who had all done the exact same thing. Thats what doesn't make sense to me. To his family at least it should be such a big deal? Yes its a sacrifice and a fair amount cant handle it, but many if not most people still do it. I dont get why they're so concerned he won't be able to handle it. He seems pretty dedicated.

glow

Imagine dropping an awesome series for a potential (and not even certain) romantic subplot in a story that has a whole buffet of interesting subplots and character relationships

glow

Alden has contacts that vastly outstrip Aulia in importance so I'm not sure he'd ever actually have a good reason to go to her

WannaBeATree

Oh boy, Stu's face getting red/violet when he talked about the argument with his family is super embarasing for sure. They likely pointed out that Stu's 'friend' left via window in the night and that Stu was very happy and relaxed for days after what he likely said was a 'long conversation'. No wonder he doesn't want to repeat the conversation to Alden. :D

BelligerentGnu

I genuinely cannot tell if Stuart is just being his 99.9 self or if there is some serious romantic tension going on. It's intriguing.

Swiss Jeez

It's because they view him as being a lot like his sister, who committed suicide very early into her career as a knight

Longoo

Thanks! Great chapter!

Anon.

Stuart and the ryeh-b’ts would be a good band name!

MrHrulgin

Given Alden's asexuality, any homoeroticism present is within you, not in the character.

Tungsten

lol. The story isnt heading toward a sexual fantasy of any kind. Sleyca isnt a fan of romance, and she already said Alden is asexual. Why are so many people reading this chapter as sexual or romantic I have no idea. I got the vibe of two people being close, but emotional, in a deep friendship way. It was the same when Boe said "I love you too" to Alden. There is such a thing as platonic love. And it is a bit sad that people always seem to default to "this relationship has to be sexual/romantic".

Tungsten

I think it is fine for fans to fantasize about stuff like that, but thinking it is canon is a wholly different thing.

Rose

Imagine cutting yourself off from good art that depicts a piece of the vastness of human experience for something as minor as a human and alien boy possibly flirting.

kapat

my guess is not necessarily romantic but definitely committed? he is clearly not half-assing their relationship. it could probably turn romantic if Alden wanted it to but I doubt Alden will want it to. Alden needs close interpersonal relationships for sure and Stuart is a very very good friend. teenage romance is quite an unstable bond for where Alden is at in his life.

Quivo

On the one hand, I want to echo what other commenters have said about Alden being ace, and on the other hand, I really want to say that I'm perfectly fine if Alden/any guy gets off the ground if it can scare off more people like you.

Chris Nameless

To all that has replied if you wish to continue the series please don't get mad if I don't.

kapat

pretty sure Sleyca is writing them to be exceptionally good friends in an Artonan way, given that Alden is almost certainly not ready for romance right now and Stuart literally called it a “friendship oath”. but also how are you gonna be homophobic on a series that has already had plenty of queer alien love mentioned in it 👀 how’d you make it to chapter 159? hahahahagaa

kapat

such a good chapter. I thought for sure that there would be more “meeting the family” in this chapter. I am really glad there wasn’t, though at first I was almost disappointed. I wouldn’t trade this moment between them for anything. I really hope that Alden confides in Stuart about being a wizard, he could really use some understanding about that aspect of himself, though of course that will make Stuart even more likely to follow through on that.

William Johnson

This is the problem with being raised by Knights, you lose the ability to operate at intensities lower than 99. This chapter was a delight, one note though right at the beginning it was unclear that they were still on the call from the end of last chapter and that Alden wasn't already on Artona 1. That may be because it was several days between reading the chapters but something to keep in mind if you can come up with an easy way to remind the reader that Stuart and Alden are on a call not chatting in person.

DAK

The delightful autocorrect to 'Wyatts' makes me want to read the last word as wabbit, for some reason.

kapat

lmaooo no I’m actually doing this bc I can’t stand the emptiness in my life without it

Chris Nameless

Again to everyone I am allowed to have an opposing opinion to yours. Please be more accepting of others. I am not bashing any one and in fact wished the author the best. I know they can not please everyone. Please be more accepting of views that conflict with you own.

Ral

Maybe 'Mother' also thinks Stue is going to struggle with affixing, and thought wow here fell into my lap this supper supportive human rabbit.

MooMoo195

Maybe you haven't noticed , but almost all of the male characters of this story have been much more emotionally advanced than many male authors are capable of writing. If you look at it from the perspective of how female close friendships work, their dynamic makes a lot of sense as to why this isn't a romantic under tone. Me personally I like the idea of a more emotionally intelligent male friendship so I'll continue to enjoy the ride.

FrostBite

Really? Have I missed some really obvious hints or something?

CapezzoloNucleare

I have to stop reading chapter to chapter. I will try to do a second reread everytime i feel the compulsion to read these... the feeling of emptiness everytime a chapter ends and there is nothing after is breaking me.

CapezzoloNucleare

damn, you are one of those unconfortably etero guys that cannot even deal with intimate friendship? must be a hard life not being open to a male friend ever.

Vega

I personally am not terribly interested in M/M relationships in stories (not that I think this will be one). But there was no way in hell I would ever drop this story for something as minor as that. Plus it’s not actually likely to be romance Stuart just seems like the kind of guy who goes all in on friendship.

Jeff Wells

A family of Knights are also intimately aware of how traumatic Affixing is. Look at how bad it was for Alden, when he's had access to and developed his Authority for 1/10th as long as Stuart has. And Alden's wasn't even his first Affixing, where most of that Authority gets locked away. My impression is the first is going to be the most traumatic, and his family doesn't think he will survive the process.

Vega

Poor Alden, both his Artonan friends are going to become knights and there is nothing he can do about it. (I agree with Alden’s thought that klibe will affix)

Alex

Why though. Why is he so much less qualified than the rest of his family? It doesn't make sense. At least not with the information we have right now.

kapat

I kinda doubt it, Gorgon explicitly asked Alden not to repeat that and I can’t imagine Alden being that disrespectful about Gorgon’s request.

Elle

Sorry the chapter was hard on you. I think Sleyca is aiming for more platonic relations and writing men with emotions is difficult to show. On another note: Happy Pride Month.

Explo Rin

Using enchantments, we've seen that Alden can take something and then simply drop it without giving it back. It's possible that he could similarly bear someone's pain for a moment and then "drop" it too

Mitchell Calhoun

I’m I the only person here who has close male friends??? I read nothing here that indicated more than a close emotionally available relationship between two guys. Not sure what exactly people are picking up on to make them think gay romance?

Explo Rin

If that was possible, it sounds like something any Knight could offer to any potential Knight.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

If Stuart wanted a romance with Alden I think he would present him with a bouquet of roses and pronounce that he has read up on human courting customs and ask if three dozen is a sufficient number of roses to make clear the seriousness of his intentions. I don't think he would misuse the word "friend" if he means "friend" Humans in romance tropes on modern day earth might try to subtly hint around at romantic feelings in order to feel each other out and avoid rejection/homophobia, but I don't think it would occur to Stuart to act that way.

Elle

I believe it was complete. Stu is 100% the reason the 'c' is there.

Explo Rin

It's weird that their "summer" and "winter" weather is very comparable to a human's summer and winter weather, yet they have way different ideas of what a "comfortable" temperature is Yo Darwin, what's up with that?

Endaris

His bookmark leaf fell from a tree while still green so the misconception makes sense. Only now it became clear that the leaf was a gift from the forest.

hercule pyro

Doesn't have to be less qualified, just has to be different in some way that they view as important. You can have a family of politicians or soldiers or academics that thinks one of the members isn't cut out for it (rightly or wrongly). Knowing what the affixations involves might make them more able to judge how it will affect stu.

Sebastian Winter

Probably because of the unfortunate situation we have with so few online writers (both male and female) being able to write decent, realistic and healthy friendships

Tata

Do as you like, of course, but I don’t think it’s out of bounds that a story with other species could be beyond the XX and XY pairing. I always took Alden to be pretty ACE but he could definitely find intense platonic and enriching love through close friendships like Boe and Jeremy. And I think he’s getting there with Lute and his flatmates. It’s not crazy to think that’s where he’s at with Stu. No way I’m quitting this story.

Bbyh

So at the risk of beating a particularly dead horse, this chapter reads a bit like a first date and I want to talk about why: 1. Both characters are familiar with each other but don’t actually know each other that well. 2. Both generally like each other 3. Both aren’t sure where they actually stand with the other. 4. There’s stakes albeit a bit more than should be present on a date. 5. I think there’s probably some other stuff but these are what jump out at me. It’s an interesting dynamic and I suspect a lot of the shippers will be drawing some conclusions from it.

Mason W

I am with you, I felt this was a great friendship moment. Stu has never had any close friends and he is feeling his was thru that as his responsibility as Artonen “royalty”. I have never picked up any “I am crushing on you” vibes from either of them. I see lots of comments below, but feels like projection vs. Supported in story.

Clint

Perhaps he’s more sensitive. Or perhaps it’s how 99.9 he is, with no ability to chill. The art’hs have generations of experience understanding who does and doesn’t make it as a knight. So whatever has them worried is probably something worth worrying about. I think there is a good reason why Stu shouldn’t affix and that Alden is in some way the solution, whether it’s using BoaB to take some of the pressure off of Stu, or the two of them doing whatever Esh and Lind did, or something completely different.

Clint

This would be such a cool way to accidentally reveal himself. Like someone asks how he can have such a leaf, and he tells them how it fell, and they are horrified at his offensive lie since that would only happen for a knight…

Emily Gurnavage

I thought that as well at one point, way back. But its been discussed a lot since. Taking the burder means he feels it instead, and it still eventually rebounds back to the original person. Hes got PTSD over his own affixations, taking it on for others would surely drive him to go join Sina Ar'th.

Terrestrial_Biped

I really don't read it that way at all. Knights inflict their suffering on themselves in the sense that they deliberately choose affixation. I don't think it's possible for them to affix themselves. "You will fight back, and you will lose," said Mother.

Francis

Stu my precious!!!!! My second favourite!! What kind of horrible conditional love is he used to? And that final quote of his: I will forge myself. Epic.

BelligerentGnu

I mean, I can completely see Stuart being oblivious to his own emotions in that sense. He might just not know yet.

Francis

And Esh-erdi the man, the chad, he knew when he met Alden that he could help Stu with his predicament and visa versa

Terrestrial_Biped

Also remember that attempting the Rite has unspecified but probably serious consequences for Gorgon, and he's asked Alden not to attempt it again for a long time.

BeepBoop

The same thing happens with close male-female and female-female friendships. It is really prominent among readers of fiction, but this sort of presumption can happen in real life too. It is a function of sufficient ambiguity between friendship and romance (outside of certain rituals and such they can look really similar when one has too little information), personal bias one way or the other, and personal evidence thresholds. Even if one knows from an outside source that things are not romantic, that does not necessarily completely change someone's perception.

Terrestrial_Biped

Possibly Esh is suggesting that Stu should be honest about his future as a knight and what that means.

Zachary Sloan

I think people are kind of conflating "caring a lot about someone" with being romantic (since a lot of the reasoning people are using revolves around the former directly implying the latter). The same thing happened with Boe, and the main difference here is that Stu-art'h is a very intense guy without the social hang-ups that would normally prevent someone from being explicit about how much they care about a friend (and it's part of why he's great). The idea of Stu-art'h's sentiment being romantic is also just kind of sad to me, since Alden is literally his only close non-family friend. The guy needs a close friend more than he needs a boyfriend.

ImNotHere

one I remember is when he tells Lute that he is on a call with his nosy friend 😄

Francis

Wow, incredibly well thought out. I have a deep gut feeling that you are correct. There was always this missing piece of the puzzle - why the family was specifically so worried about Stu affixing. No other theories explained it satisfactorily imo

Christine

The people that are still confused about this are people who whole-heartedly believe that Sam and Frodo are getting it on off-screen in LOTR.

Francis

I think it is very possible that they asked why Stu, who has never had a friend, likes this human so much. They probably think he is gay

Zenty

Waiting until Sunday for a continuation will be painful, but this chapter exceeded expectations so I'll probably be on cloud nine the whole week thinking about it. They're both so cute!

Terrestrial_Biped

There's a story I read once where the protagonist was in a rough situation. On the first day his teammates told him, "The first day is the hardest." He got through it. In the second day they told him, "The second day is hardest," and he got through it. In the third day, "The third day is the hardest," so on. Which affixation is hardest? The next one. Always the next one.

Francis

I think it was a gift from Mother. And she is definitely part of or comes from the sentient trees on Artona 1

Clint

The Knight’s Retreat is in the extreme north. That isn’t typical weather for most of the planet.

Guus van der Borg

I think it's not so much the hardest as the biggest filter. To put it a bit crude, the type of person to be able to handle it once is probably much more likely to be the type of person that is able to handle it again.

Francis

Ah Biped is that a "what is the most important step.." reference?

Ladyhotcomb

I absolutely adore their relationship.

Francis

I need a short paragraph of Drusi otta POV.. turns out she loves being a spy, she specialises in invisibility magic because she watches people's lives like a soap opera

Gregory

We've known he was going to affix for a while. That's why he was making rings for basic spellcasting stuff, and he was very clear that his scheduled meeting with Alden could not be pushed back a week.

Details that make this chapter perfect, in order of appearance: 1. Alden focusing so hard on the phrase “Loom large in my consideration” that he accidentally writes it into a text message 2. “Flood Trap 2” showing us a bit more of Matadero and its seriousness 3. Alden reflecting on his big suitcase becoming a luggage pioneer. He brought it to the B List in hopes it would get destroyed and stop taking up space in his room, but it survived against all odds, and now it has carried his learning cushion, gone to the rapport, and been chewed on by Better Alden. Also note that this luggage, Alden’s messenger bag, and Everly’s tote bag (when she was asking him to carry her on the nonagon) are all blue, which is Alden’s authority color. 4. Esh-erdi’s Esh-erdiness with [Do not let anyone tell you The Elder’s Croak. I will be better at it than them.] 5. “Our household would be enlivened by your presence for a day or a year.” What a beautiful welcoming message for an open-ended stay. 6. “ ‘sup Asshole.” 7. MEATPETAL 8. The gorgeous image of “The webbing of her wings glowed like a lantern with the midday sun above her,” followed by ignoring Worse Alden in order to sniff at the unfamiliar bag from Earth. (Pretty sure Sleyca has a dog.) 9. “Human bedtime.” Something many of us also find quite alien, especially when soup is involved. 10. Fluffy rug. And a larger bed than human beds, presumably because it is meant to sleep more people? 11. Magic rings… will Alden add to his collection, which currently includes Joe’s and Esh’s? 12. Alden’s ability to put words to his appreciation of the learning cushion, and recognising that Stu picked the meaningful logograms himself. 13. Stuart saying he wanted to give Alden “Something that you would have with you… for a long time.” It sounds like he was originally going to end this sentence with something else. “…after I'm gone?” 14. Alden internally calling Stuart an “excellent starer” like it’s a cool skill, rather than seeing it as awkward, rude, or weird. 15. “Serious Land” 16. Alden’s internal monologue calling Stuart “Stuart” when it’s casual, but switching to Stu-art’h whenever he’s hit by the wider implications of who Stuart is and who his family is. 17. The zoom-out to Better Alden at the end, echoing all of our curiosity and interest in this important moment between two precious friends.

What if the risk is not him choosing affixation but the specific skill/build he wants to acquire is riskier than most. From what we know he was going to affix close to Aldens original visit, so he would be way more specific about his deathdate if it were the affixation itself. This trial might be something else

MooMoo195

I could see that, it seems to me that the contracts are parts of the worlds themselves. It still doesn't explain the exact significance for sure though. Was it because he was acknowledged as a knight? Did something about aldens mindset resonate with the forest? Maybe it's something else.

Francis

From how I understand Alden's character, he won't say anything yet... He would have to be out of options to comfort/help Stu before he reveals the truth. Another little push or event has to be added to this mixture first.. I think this quick visit is just setting up the story so that when Alden reveals the truth during the December visit, it would feel in-character and believable. Perhaps just before Stu affixes and freaks out... Perhaps if Alden witnesses the family not showing enough trust in Stu... So far Alden tends to only put himself at risk if his friends are threatened/bullied/at risk

Gregory

“But not everyone who stays feels like casting spells." Innocuous phrasing but I'm pretty sure these cottages are frequently used for post-affixation recovery for knights. Similar to how Stuart was making rings himself.

to assist your search: in Artonan Conversations, stu sees alden call him a friend these three times to lute > [That’s what I wanted to talk to you about,] Alden texted, swiping beads of rain off his messenger bag. It was waterproof. Good to know. [I didn’t want to surprise you guys first thing. I’m talking to my Artonan friend today. We’re on a video call right now, and he can see my surroundings. So maybe you don’t want to go so hard on the colorful language in class?] > [Dude, I am impressed by your ability to be yourself in front of anyone. But do you really want me to have to define and try to explain Shoe Pisser to my friend? I don’t want him to think humans are gross.] two times accidentally texted to stu-art'h when he meant to text lute one time on purpose to stu (note the former was a private message to lute) > [Lute, hi. I was trying to tell you earlier. I’m on a video call with my Artonan friend right now. We’re hanging out together today. He can hear what you’re saying.] “My nosy friend,” he added aloud for both of their benefits. with the benefit of the reader perspective, we know alden called stu a friend that day a couple other times. twice more to lute, and 2-3 more times in his head.

Terrestrial_Biped

Alden is asking because last time he was here, a tree dropped a leaf directly on his head and he kept it. He's been using it as a bookmark, and more than two months later it's STILL GREEN.

Francis

Good point Sunden. Perhaps the hush should be replaced by Quiet or Shut your mouth or something. Not that I care, whatever tension it is doesn't make any difference to my enjoyment of the story. But if it distracts others, then perhaps a different choice of words is better

Zenty

Who needs dating apps when you have Mother who knows everything about you & everyone else and can find the perfect match for you and deliver them right to your home.

Terrestrial_Biped

Not so sure about that. A (very serious) human might say they wanted to "forge themselves" into someone stronger or better by going through a tough but beneficial experience. Like boot camp or grad school. Plus, you'd have to be an expert in affixation theory to meaningfully contribute to the design of a knight skill. Stu is too young to be an expert in almost anything, and it would be absurd for all Knights to need expertise in this one field they'll never use again.

Alex

Books are great for preserving leaves. That said, I think his magic leaf wasn't just dried and still green, but green and still fresh somehow. The fresh part is the magic part :)

kapat

lol “please be more accepting of others” 😂

Francis

I wonder if Mother will visit Alden while he sleeps

Jazehiah

Alden would need to reveal that he has a book on handcasting spells for that to happen.

Zat

Yea holy crap, 100% agree. At no point did anything here veer into any sort of sexual territory. It's possible Stu has feelings for Alden, but I haven't seen anything outside of 'very important friend' hinted at here. Are people really so uncomfortable with showing emotions with their male friends they immediately jump to gay?

Terrestrial_Biped

Recall that lots of Knights commit suicide, and many probably die violent deaths as well. Sina is dead. Uncle Tesen is dead. Stu speaks of his "oldest living brother", implying that his actual oldest brother is dead. Who knows how many more casualties in just his immediate family. It's "normal" to the art'hs, but it's a high-mortality life choice, and he's the baby everyone wants to protect. That would be reason enough to want him to make safer, happier choices, even if they didn't think he was unsuited to knighthood for whatever reason. And they apparently do.

Guus van der Borg

"This is just a different bunch of Artonans. No big deal.  The most important bunch of Artonans." Gotta admit, if I accidentally befriended someone of the Dutch royal family and he/she semi-casually invited me to hang out at the main palace, I'd get mighty nervous too. And they are just non-superpowered and mostly symbolic. Not even the family of the interplanetary superman pope.

DAK

Re #10 and 11. Agree with more people, larger bed, but there is an implication that these cottages can be used for post-affixation recovery (and maybe affixation itself?). The low-grade rings for people that don't feel like casting right now speaks to a painful authority. The big beds might also just be so you don't fall out while writhing in agony. I bet they're very comfy, though...

Guus van der Borg

Speaking of superman, I imagine it's not unlike accidentally befriending Superman's latest sidekick and being invited to hang out at the Justice League.

WannaBeATree

I think it was the seriousness and emotional vulnebility that Stu is showing and fear of being rejected/not accepted that, combined with the blushing, previous comment by Evul and this cottage having a large bed, could be misinterpreted. The amount of thought put into the relationship by Stu as a friend is probably not something many people can relate with, or only with a romantic parnter, so the comments shift that way. I really like stories that show what healthy relationships are, so the reader can draw comparisons to the life around them.

WannaBeATree

I interpreted Nr. 17 as being a lot darker. Snot=tears/hurt, saliva=hunger/desire/need, wanting outside=let secret out, window=selfcontroll?, Alden=Alden. Interesting, no matter what hapens. :)

David

[The largest bed he’d ever seen in his life was on one side, along with all the closet space and a good fluffy rug.] I just realized that the reason the bed is so big is because artonans tend to have a lot of partners

Box Jellyfish

I'm a fan of Stuart as a character and was really looking forward to more Alden/Stuart interactions, but this is starting to make me a little uncomfortable. Alden is in a very vulnerable place at the moment, I fear him going along with whatever Stuart may be planning out of a desire for connection. Just visiting Artona 1 and the Rapport is going to have huge impacts on his life if/when it gets out at CNH; buying in to whatever has Stuart pouring attention on Alden seems like it should have a lot of thought with a clear head. Alden needs to de-stress, not get new complications in his life. Here's hoping he has a (relatively) low key weekend and gets time to recover without new entanglements.

Jazehiah

People keep talking about how Alden HAS to tell Stu-art'h about his situation during this visit, but I'm not so sure. It would be nice, but I think Alden could hold off until December, if he really pushed it. I do expect Alden to chat with Mother a bit before he decides one way or the other. I'm also not sure Alden will reveal it intentionally. For now, I just want to relax and watch two friends try to figure out how much they can share and how well they understand each other.

Gremlin

I so agree! Its so common and unfortunate when socially akward people (thats most of us) equate friendliness with romance.

Gregory

If nothing else she should probably chat a little about the invocation of the privilege and the subsequent refusal.

Noc

I am so glad that Sleyca has already said that romance of any kind is not in the cards for a long time. Modern fanfiction seems to have forgotten that, actually, men are really good at being friends. It used to be this whole big thing even. 'Best friends,' 'bros,' 'brothers in arms,' etc. This is a breath of fresh air.

Gregory

He teleported from Matadero and will presumably return there, so it's actually fairly unlikely for the information to get out to his class. It's possible he'll tell his roommates, he's been being more open with them, but if he does then it will blow Lexi's mind. Again. And I think what Stuart has planned is... literally just hanging out. Stuart just had a big fight with his family, he's looking for comfort, and Alden is clearly a big source of that in his life. And Alden clearly likes hanging out with Stuart. It seems like this is good for both of them.

Alex Scriber

Why do you smear your nose on windows? Maybe you can give us some insight into other Alden’s behavior.

Jeremy Goldberg

“Meat Petal” would be an amazing name for a band.

ChoWingGom

Thank you for the chapter! Alden's realisation of the parallel between Boe+snarkiness and Stu+formality is great. Alden has a talent for talking with people, in the way they are ready to talk too. He could comfort Kibby, he could talk to Maricel and Lute when they were still driving people away, the whole gym meeting... Out of luck if he doesn't care for you, hmmmm Winston, Hazel? That ending discussion reminds me of the the friends of Klee-Pak with terminal diseases. Sometimes you only get a short time with someone.

Noc

Now Alden has to decide whether telling Stuart that he's a wizard will hurt his chance of survival or not. Would he be galvanized to follow the journey with his friend? Or would he be crippled by concern?

Second Raddish

Alden had the affixation in place already before he trained to sense authority. His agony was just over the patch update. Stu still has to download the whole game.

Elle

@kapat when I read that I chuckled... it was a sad chuckle though.

Jeremy Goldberg

You’re right - there have been a couple of other situations where Alden and some other boy have been in more emotionally or physically intimate situations than we’re used to seeing in heterosexual male relationships. When Boe returned from catspace, their whole deal was figuring out how to share emotions. Later, Alden’s lesson with Lute was also more intimate than you’d usually see, with the two of them in a small, canonically private room with a bed, and Lute gently moving Alden’s fingers into the correct positions for the word chain. In both cases the situation was diffused by the other boy expressing attraction for a girl. Lute fancied whatshername, and Natalie wandered into Alden’s living room specifically so Boe could ogle her and make awooga noises. With Stu, I guess there was no practical way to diffuse the situation beforehand. Also, the end of the scene felt way too much like a tasteful fade out. “Hush…” < camera pans to window > < end scene >

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

I'm getting the impression that Artonans take their friendships as or more seriously than sexual attraction. Perhaps by being able to experience each other's authority directly, they are not as dependent as we, (usually,) are on sexual attraction to build and maintain our closest relationships. We shall see.

Desidia

He might need an expensive, shady Earth lawyer/representative if Boe wants to have a life on Earth. Not sure of Artonans are allowed to directly interfere with Earth laws.

Sindri

This seems like a good time to bring up the origami metaphor for Affixation. And also maybe to ask what it means when one of those leaves doesn't turn brown.

AeroPilot

As far as I can tell the Stu-Alden ship was only ever sailing in the comments section here. Before I started reading comments it never even entered my mind that there were romantic undertones. Now it's more like if I look at it sideways and try to force that interpretation I can see where people are coming from if they were already expecting or going out of their way to see things in that light. I always got the vibe of old buddy cop or bromance relationship plots like in old movies or books. Maybe it's because I'm older than the average reader here and those tropes have fallen out of style in recent years or something like that. Or maybe it's because non-romantic emotional character relationships are so rarely done this well or with this much depth and nuance that it is very easy for our brain to shove it in the "must be romance" box since that is the vast majority of what emotionally complex relationships are in books / movies now days.

Sindri

I don't think it's the sort of thing where a distraction puts you at risk. My understanding is, most Knights who don't die in combat die when they can't find any reason to stick around that's worth the constant torture. If two oathbound friends are going through the same thing and both know the other needs support, I think they could last a long time by just refusing to give up until their partner is gone. The downside of that is of course that after the partner dies, the one who lives might not last more than a day or two...

Quas

Oh, I’ve only just realized that this is probably what Esh’erdi and Lin’otta were celebrating on Earth

Zenty

"men are really good at being friends. It used to be this whole big thing even. 'Best friends,' 'bros,' 'brothers in arms,' etc." Yeah, guys really do get along really well with other guys. And the only reason every single guy doesn't date or sleep with their 'best friends', 'bros', 'brothers in arms' is because they're sexually attracted to girls instead and are therefore not interested, they just don't feel the same attraction towards their male friends that they feel for girls. Luckily for Alden, this doesn't apply to him as he's not attracted to girls(or anyone) so there's no Gremlin in his head telling him it would be weird to choose a guy over a girl if he ever were to look for romance. (which would be easier to find among other boys since you know, boys really get along well as you've mentioned) ---- Also, "Sleyca has already said that romance of any kind is not in the cards for a long time" Yup, romance is not something that just happens right away, especially not in a slice-of-life story like this. If there's romance it will develop SLOWLY over a long period, kinda like what's going on with Stu & Alden right now, slowly getting to know each other, slowly getting closer, slowly growing more emotionally attached to each other. Maybe they'll start to associate everything they're feeling with romantic attraction at some point later down the line. Maybe it doesn't happen at all, and most likely there wouldn't even be a relationship where sex is on the table if it does actually happen. Still, people need to realize that sexual & romantic attraction are two different things that are not necessarily mutually exclusive and removal of the sexual attraction open up more doors for the romantic parts regardless if people want to deny the possibilities all together. Sleyca knows what they're doing, and I trust in their ability to understand the characters they write. They haven't commented explicitly on Alden's romantic inclinations yet, or rather that Alden hasn't mentioned it/or are aware of his inclinations yet, but I'd argue that if someone actually pays attention to Alden and what kind of people easily gain his interest/attention, what kind of people he tends to get emotionally invested more easily in, and who among his friends he casually spend extra time worrying/thinking about you can probably draw so pretty decent conclusions about what romantic inclinations he might eventually develop/realize himself. : )

VP

I think Stu is the kind of person who would love the idea of friendship bracelets. So would Kibby. I fear for the future of Alden's wrists

hhttghlk

Right, my reading is that Stuart's about to become a knight but everyone's telling him he'll die if he does. He just needs a friend right now and any talk of friendship vows is just a vague hypothetical future consideration.

Aspiring Moth

this comment section reminded me why I don't like shippers

CapezzoloNucleare

I think you guys either never seen two male friends or you never had a moment in your life where you had a single real friend. Stuart is not smitten, stuart has finally found a friend and is very emotionally invested in his ONLY friend.

PatienceHoney

Are we going to become divided into Team Edwa... I mean Stu and Team Natalie?

Andrew Simpson

I don't want him to magically bear his burdens, I want him to just normally help bear his burdens by being a bro who's like "I know what you're gonna do through, because I've been through it too, and I believe in you and I'll be here for you"

PatienceHoney

What I love is that I get the impression that Stu has an ITINERARY for just hanging out...

CapezzoloNucleare

@Zenty no, just no... please don't talk about things you have no idea about. you are confusing macho avoidance of intimacy with friends (like avoidance of contact) with sexuality. they are separate things. most etero males/females don't mentally condition themselves to think being with a male/female is unappealing, it just is. if you like one or the other (or both)you figure it out you don't have to convince yourself about it. i think it was not your intention, but your comment comes off like generalizing and borderline insulting. Not cool.

PatienceHoney

I think that there is a recent study showing that men who have friends are happier and live longer. So here's to Stu and Alden - may they have friendship and long and happy lives.

David Burchfield

Wow this was an incredible chapter, there is so much in it to unpack. 1. Esh-erdi talked to Stu-art'h and insinuated... something. It is possible he has Alden's Authority Sense and/or Skill together, or it is possible he just recognizes the PTSD signs and thinks he needs a good break. I think this is definitely his plan for helping Alden's mental health. 2. I still can't figure out exactly what the negotiation with his family was about, he was obviously mad about something while talking to them. But doesn't seem angry now. 3. Stu-art'h's tunic has an interesting design on it, it seems reminiscent(though clearly different from) of the one Mother Showed Alden at the end of chapter 59. ("A complicated sigil appeared, glowing in bright blue light on the television screen. It was a circle full of dizzying geometric patterns that seemed to shift slightly every time Alden tried to follow them with his eyes. Two bright dots shone on either side of it, barely touching the circle’s perimeter. “One twelve,” she said. “The Bearer of All Burdens.”) I think it is the shape of his chosen affixation, and a possible source of the argument with his family. 4. I love how Stu-art'h takes such comfort in formality it is like it puts him at easy even though he doesn't actually care for it, having a tendency to cut directly to heart of matters. 5. Stu-art'h seems ready to finally tell Alden a bit more about the Knights and stuff (some of which Alden already knows). I wonder if Alden will balance the scales and finally tell Stu some of his secrets. 6. It seems like affixations might be much worse for Artonans than what Alden went through. Either because they have more total Authority, a more sensitive authority sense, or there is a shock because they have an authority sense when they first affix (unlike Alden who didn't then gradually developed it). Also interesting that if they make it through the initial stage then they are likely to be OK for awhile. 7. I do wonder if Bearer of All Burdens could help with this type of scenario and maybe make Stu more likely to survive. This opens a huge can of worms because he would have to take a pretty dark burden and pump up his skill a lot in order to do it (which doesn't match up with the given timeline for Stu's affixation). I can't help if this type of work is what Joe meant by "endless misery" if the Primary ever figures out what his skill is and what he was trying to guide him into avoiding in their last conversation. There isn't a ton of evidence for any of this but the implications and directions it could lead the story are very very interesting. 8. I really hope Alden stays for the full time rather than insisting on making it back in time for class on Wednesday, I think all of his teachers would be relieved to hear that he was taking a day off to hang out with a friend. 9. I love the little details like the defective one use magical rings for convenience or the high basket/chairs high in the trees with no means of egress because of course wizards and knights can just manage it. 10. His leaf hasn't faded and the way Stu-art'h said that they don't fall until they turn brown "Ususally" seems to mean that there could be some greater meaning there. I always got the feeling the trees have a bit more awareness and the unfading leaf seems more and more like a deliberate gift from them and possibly infused with magic or authority in some sense. I am curious as to what if any implication the leaf could have. 11. We finally have the Primary's real name (I wasn't expecting to get it ever honestly though I had confidence that Sleyca actually had one), and I believe this is the first time Alden has seen Stu-art'h's mourning name (even though it wasn't hard to know what it would be). Probably a bunch of other things as well. One of the things I love about this story is how none of the chapters are empty there is always so much detail and so much going on.

CapezzoloNucleare

@PatienceHoney well, if you were inviting a close friend you don't see often to your city you might want to plan a few key activities and places to visit, right? Stuart is being weird about it because he is a weird guy and he is excited, but its normal i think

CaylaCat

so, you know how Artonan has words like "mean-mean" when i read this snippet i kinda found myself wondering if Alden is thinking in Artonan, cause "fear/excitement" might be what i'd put in the shorthand of texting abt feelings, but isn't usually how Sleyca writes "He remembered the person he was before, waving goodbye to Boe and Jeremy. The freshly purchased red coat. The fear/excitement." thoughts?

PatienceHoney

Sty totally has a friend crush. He has been longing for a person he "doesn't hate when they open their mouth." I think Stu described it well. He is a rich, but utterly thirsty person whose family was trying to rip the bottle of water from his hand in order to get him to do what they want. Stu longs for a deep relationship and I see this developing into a lifelong deep, fulfilling, and platonic relarionship.

HumbleBee

I wonder when Alden will pay back hos wordchains

VP

“The unstated reasons for his call were slightly different, if I didn’t misunderstand his < < delicate insinuations > >,” said Stuart. That was a concerning way of putting things. “What did he insinuate?” >> What do you reckon Esh insinuated? Did he notice the magic after all?

Zenty

@Cape Yeah, you're somewhat right, I explained that point quite poorly and my example didn't seem to come across how it did in my head so I've edited it now. I probably did come across as a bit aggressive but I won't apologize for it, I'm tired of straight people constantly dismissing gay relationships whenever there's actually good writing that points towards it actually being a real possibility for once. Especially when their arguments are basically 'Obviously they can't be romantically involved because Alden's Asexual and Asexual people can't fall in love apparently' or my new favorite 'The author is just really, really good at portraying male platonic friendships compared to other authors' That one is actually infuriating, while also not being completely wrong. What Alden has with Boe is in my opinion undoubtedly a well-written platonic friendship. But Alden & Stu's relationship gives a different vibe AND is fully possible regardless if people want to disregard it or not. Artonans often have multiple partners, so there's a real possibility of Artonan Society being a bisexual society where not caring about gender is the norm and the likelihood of Stu being Bi is therefore higher than him being straight regardless of whether he ends up liking Alden or not. (I'd argue he fell in love at first sight and has not yet realized it)

Aspiring Moth

I interpreted that as more political or mental health related concerns. the unprecedented situation of a human wizard is way above Stu'arth's pay grade

Aifhwinx

I think it's some combination of the mental health and something to do with how esh was trying to figure out what alden's skill was. esh did mention that there were some concerning options iirc, so maybe he insinuated something about that. could also be something to do with the talk of being Stuart's friend. possibly that has a more formal and serious meaning for knights than Alden may have been aware of and he may have insinuated something about that ignorance. honestly, there's a ton of potential speculation that seems more immediately obvious (from what we know) than detecting that Alden has authority sense

Aifhwinx

as an aromantic, i personally get frustrated by people trying to claim a good healthy friendship is leaning toward a romantic one. there is such a small amount of aromantic representation, even less that is good. this is especially relevant because alden unconsciously worrying about people doesn't mean he's leaning towards romance. simply put if alden's thoughts are an indicator of romantic feelings then i must not be aro because i have similar thoughts and concerns about others in my life who i am close to, and none of those are romantic

Matthew D

Alden can affix with The Mother. She is nicer than Earth System

SunderGoldmane

I think becoming a knight is synonymous with “ceremonial self sacrifice” in the eyes of the family. I imagine wizards live a long time due to magic and rejuvenation but a knight has an existential endurance race slapped onto their lifespan that’s separate from simple age count, they are guaranteed to die “early”.

Matthew D

I don’t understand the Artonan names or the mourning names. Do you which chapter Sleyca covered it in?

Matthew D

Esh-erdi felt Alden’s authority nudge. He probably guessed it was Alden or at least has suspicions

SunderGoldmane

@shawn Stu’s sister did not kill herself. None of the knights that embraced the snow that day killed themselves. They were killed by the primary. I think this matters. They aren’t suicide victims, they were slain in the line of duty. They didn’t take their lives, the primary did. That’s his job, that’s his burden to bear. When family members think about the deceased there’s a cognitive break/boundary where all blame stops on the primary.

Anthony Lutz

Stu just ignored/accepted the fact that Esh was responsible for rescuing and caring for Alden after the disaster, because of course, a friend of an Art'h would be the most important of all other humans.

Elle

I enjoy your thoughts on seven, it makes a few things come together. Maybe some skills are more painful, and Joe planned on using Alden to select a specific skill. We don't know if Knights use the same skill as the original 300. If they do, that one restriction requiring the skills to always exist / be available somewhere would make more sense. An Artonan wouldn't want to choose a skill to bear burdens immediately while bearing the burden of bound of their authority. Maybe Alden's skill is a death sentence for wizards.

SunderGoldmane

I don’t think it’s possible for a person to bind there own authority willingly. Also, the system affixing avowed is going to be different than a knight if only because when avowed are chosen they only get access to a limited catalogue of classes and limited selection of skills within those classes. Because wizards decide what’s on offer. A knight can just design and submit their desired skill like a wizard does and then just pick it. I see no reason for the system to limit a knights choices when the system is built for wizards/knights to begin with.

SunderGoldmane

I was in the middle of contemplating sober things and that mental image at the end just rubbed droopy snoot booger all over my head, it was jarring -_-

SunderGoldmane

I now want to see Alden attend gym in a commendation adorned red blastproof lab coat.

Sleyca

I tried to reply to some of these comments, but I can't think of how to weigh in on the discussion without my answer *feeling* like some kind of top-down authorial definition of their current relationship... So instead of saying important stuff about intimacy and aliens that will be analyzed, I'll make jokes about Other Alden: So much tension coming from her this chapter. OA x suitcase. OA x window.

Sleyca

Thank you! I've actually really been forward to these chapters since I finally get to start expanding on Artonan cultures again.

Zenty

Then you might be a lot further on the spectrum than me, and possibly Alden because I'm far on both the asexual(not as far as Alden) & aromantic spectrum but leaning toward other guys with 0 inclinations towards women and I feel like Alden's the closest representation to me I've ever seen in any media. I personally see quite a few homoromantic inclinations in Alden's subconscious behavior throughout the series that remind me of myself, but at the same time, I also don't see any of those same inclinations towards any of the female characters which I also find relatable. I do heavily agree with you about the lack of aromantic representation, and while I'd like it if Alden were completely Aro/Ace I don't see it in the writing. Since Sleyca only really confirmed his asexual inclinations and hasn't commented on his romantic inclinations and if there will be any romance at all I'd rather on a personal level that it leans in the direction of homoromantic because that's the direction I feel the writing is leaning stronger in rather than the opposite.

John D Jones

@ PatienceHoney If I'm team anything, I'm Team Maricel. Alden likes Natalie and sees her as a friend with "benefits" (specifically the benefit of getting really delicious food). That said, Alden seems to focus a lot more of his concern and energy on Maricel.

Gregory

Alden doesn't currently need to affix and will, for a multitude of reasons, put it off for as long as possible.

Gregory

I wonder if Alden will update his fake profile during this trip. He wanted to wait until he had a spell he could pretend he was using, but really now is a good time with all the other levels from the classmates. The reason this trip could be relevant is that Alden has not decided to do it, and Earth wasn't going to do anything proactive on the subject, but Mother might.

John D Jones

@ Wiggles1 Because I was contrasting "emotional attraction" against "sexual attraction" and I hoped that it was already taken as "read" that Alden wasn't going to be sexually attracted to non-sentient animals.

Cyrus McEnnis

Gym they're not supposed to wear magical items, and that lab coat would definitely count as one.

Desert Yeti

@Matthew D I don't recall the chapters, but a normal Artonan name is 'PersonalName-Family name.' (Could be traditional family, but I think it's closer to clan name). A mourning name goes ahead of the personal name: 'MourningName PersonalName-FamilyName.' It's a permanent name change, and I assume you can only have one. Stuart used to be Stu-art'h. Then he took his sister's name (Sina) as a mourning name and became Sina Stu-art'h. We don't know many of the details about mourning names except that most Artonans don't have them and they're a big deal to take on.

Clint

Can we have a Team Friendship, rooting for Alden to have lots of good friends but no romantic or sexual partners until he's in a much better place emotionally? He's a wreck and needs good friends, not relationship drama.

Sleyca

The year is 2045. You are sleeping peacefully in your bed when your cell phone's emergency alarm goes off. You throw off your covers, your heart pounding with adrenaline. "What is it?" your sleeping partner of choice asks. "A tornado?" You grab the phone. So much blood drains from your face that a passing mouse mistakes you for a ghost and drops dead from fright. "What?" your sleeping partner of choice asks. "What is it? Not another demon!" "Worse," you say. "It's a protagonist warning." "No! Not him!" "Get the dog in the car. Then the children. We have to run before he gets here."

wakeuptheresbacon

What did Sleyca mean by "y s p o c"? Edit: "Your Sleeping Partner Of Choice", apparently? Thanks, Thorny from the discord

Sleyca

Have fun if you do! Pretend you don't see any silly errors. I may be dreaming about my ability to do this but when I finally get the chance to re-read and clean up the first sixty or so chapters, I've been thinking it would be fun to do the revisions on a schedule and repost them with a commentary here or somewhere else for anyone who wants to read along.

Sean Shivers

Ya, and its super suspicious if he doesnt update it... far easier to tell there's something weird going on.

Sleyca

Yep! Stuart's family lives in a colder climate than Artonans enjoy. But the knights there have a whole "privately governed" territory that's around the size of Illinois, so that's an amazing trade-off.

jg

Stu wait one Mother privilege HELP HELP Edit what a cliffhanger! For a week! Or 5 days. Alden's response this one hopes is unequivocal, using his whole toolkit, a solid change in the story

CaylaCat

thankyou 😅 i hadn't realized it removed some of the words i wrote!

JJ Hunter

I keep returning to "When he’s home, my oldest living brother spends the entire season trying to be << at one >> with the land. We don’t see him until the frost comes.” The way loss is so threaded through this large multigenerational << siblinghold >> that qualifiers like "oldest living" roll so naturally off Stu-art'h's tongue. How did Uncle Tesen die? Why do most of the people who know Stu-art'h well (read: his family) think he's likely to die if he proceeds with this unnamed choice? Is this choice related to what Stu-art'h feels he needs to do to live a life that will not bring shame to Sina's name? What does it mean for a mighty tree of the forest rooted in the ancient ward of departed knights' remnant authorities to choose to drop an ever-living leaf with pin-point accuracy on Alden's face after shading it for a time as he recovered from his recent affixation agonies? (“They don’t fall until after they turn brown,” said Stuart. “Usually.”) Does each tree correspond to a knight who was? And if yes: whose tree was that one?

David

This comment is a petition to rename “Rapport I” to “Serious Land” because it’s where all the level 99.9 people live

Jim

Think of the bowl that one student had back at Leafsong. When Alden tried to use his skill on it, it basically fought back because the tree still had authority over it. This is similar, the leaf is still a part of the tree, and bound within it's authority, and thus still lives.

Jim

And give Alden the chance to give his Origami metaphor for his skill.

Jim

#3 I think the luggage is a metaphor for himself. A little battered, a little blue but still holding together despite all it's been through. I think we'll see that luggage for a long time.

Clint

Might be possible to use Artonan drugs to sleep through them...

Jazehiah

I don't think Alden has control over his fake profile. Alden did not configure his fake profile. Alden decided which one was shown.

Jazehiah

I expect the insinuations were romantic in nature, which could not be further from the truth.

Jim

We can stop calling him Object Shaper-art'h

Gregory

Alden doesn't have direct control, but it would rapidly become very suspicious if it never updated. Presumably the System can update it - Mother definitely can, and likely Earth as well. It's interesting, we've heard a lot from the Systems that lies are expensive so... this profile probably costs a lot more than we would expect.

Christine

Okay, so: I am NOT a shipper. Even if a romantic relationship were to develop between Alden and Stu-art'h, now is NOT the time. Alden needs stable, deep relationships, not a teen romance. I am here for a Frodo+Sam deep friendship all the way, unless Sleyca wants to take it somewhere else in the future, in which case I'm sure I'll love it. Now that that's been established: isn't it likely that Stu-art'h was lying in this part: ***** "[...]I would have to repeat the entire conversation to make sure I told you whatever thing Evul found worthy of remark.” “You can do that if you want,” Alden told him. He watched as purple crawled up Stuart’s pale neck and ears toward his face.  “I couldn’t. I got very angry a couple of times.” “That makes me even more curious.” “I used < < unbefitting > > words for reasoning with loved ones,” Stuart said. And he looked so embarrassed now that Alden couldn’t even think of teasing him about it. ***** The MAJORITY of the time when we've seen Stu-art'h blush, it's been because he is lying. And it seems a bit far-fetched that he can't recount the conversation without repeating it verbatim. So I do think he's trying to hide something here, and that the only reason he doesn't completely give himself away is he's learned to lie by saying misleading truths.

PatienceHoney

@CapNuc True. But I get the impression this is more an itinerary for hanging around the house. Like first we'll snack on chips and shoot the sh*t, then play a game of HORSE, next we can order pizza and play Elden Ring, and finally when we are too tired to see straight we can eat oreos and really open up and talk...

JJ Hunter

I bet it meant the world to Stu to get introduced to a stranger around his age as Alden's friend instead of his father's son. To be someone's friend first-! To be greeted as Alden's friend-! Such riches. No wonder Stu was treasuring Alden's misdirected texts to the point of letting Alden continue in case he could get more instances of Alden candidly calling him his Artonan friend! Bet Stu did the equivalent of saving those to long term storage for rainy day cheer-ups and immediately started practicing what it would be like to introduce Alden to someone as *his* friend.

Pedro Henrique

My thinking is that over multiple generations the arths have figured out the optimal enviroment and supporting network for someone who bears the burden of being a Knight to thrive and not be crushed over the occasional soul-torture section and relentless chronic pain every time they affix their authority. And they look at someone like Stuart, who is clearly neurodivergent to some degree, with no close friends, whose own family struggle to understand and connect with, and who is still grieving his sister Sina, and they come to the sensible conclussion he is unlikely to survive his first year as a Knight.

Christine

Great analysis altogether, but I'm most excited about Point 3: Stu-art'h could totally be wearing the sigil of the skill he intends to affix!!! That would be consistent with his rebellious mood towards his family after that fight! I also love it because it would mean Stu-art'h is planning to affix something different from Alden. Some people have suggested that Stu-art'h would affix the same thing as Alden once he finds out his skill, which I think would be... underwhelming, if not outright disappointing. HOWEVER, I do love the idea that Stu-art'h could already know what Alden's skill is, and be planning to affix something complementary to it. This could've been part of the family argument? I don't favor it as the most probable theory, but I do think it's likely that the Primary knows what Alden's skill is from his earlier examination, and he could've told Stu-art'h.

Christine

I enjoy romances, and I even enjoy gay romance. But I am completely here for the story Sleyca is telling, and it feels deeper than most any romance I've read. If Alden develops a romantic relationship later in the story, I'm sure I'd enjoy it, but I don't want that for him right now. I know what it's like to be dealing with a heavy amount of trauma at a young age, and I don't think that developing a romantic relationship at this stage would be good for him. Alden is trying so hard to find himself and his place in the world; that's what I want to read about right now.

JJ Hunter

I wonder what it would take for Stu's family to see him fully as he is now, and not just as the little kid who endured through Sina's release and his peers leaving and then utterly crumbled after. We just had an example of how profoundly aunt Connie was misreading Alden vs. what Alden was actually bringing to that conversation and how he felt in the aftermath. I don't think Stu's family is wholly immune from making similar mistakes just because they have more generations of service experience to draw on, especially when trying to parent a kid who's actively trying to present as mature, capable, adult, unquestionably worthy of something they fear will be his ruining instead of his making. I get the sense they've set the bar of their fears so high Stu feels he can't share any serious doubts or fears with them anymore lest he be barred entirely from trying. Even the people who love you deeply and care so much can get it wrong sometimes. Past history can suggest but it doesn't unfailingly dictate. No one kid is ever exactly the same as another.

Explo Rin

Ah, missed that bit Still, feels weird that they would keep their retreat in a place that feels unusually chilly to them

Dalton C Vieira

There was nothing erotic about this scene at all and if two male characters being emotionally open to each other is off-putting to you then this patreon is definitely better off without you.

Scandalion

Imma be so sad if he doesn't. It's set up beautifully for both of them to have a dear friend to rely upon for one of the hardest tasks in this known universe. Mother clearly knew this would happen. Plus its the clearest way to advance Alden's Squire-to-Knight plot without trapping him in internal dialogue.

Scandalion

THIS!! Sitting on the Learning Cushion and authority greeting Stu is the answer. It goes beyond a verbalisation and will offer great lore and character conflicts. I NEED IT!

Scandalion

It's a brilliant art, being able to write a humanoid alien as distinctly alien in culture and language but also so relatable to readers. Love this Soup, thank you for it!

JJ Hunter

I really want to know if Esh-erdi and Evul-art'h sent each other metaphorical fistbumps of benign meddling solidarity after Alden texted Esh about getting Stu's invite and taking him up on it.

Danzafan37

Is Stuart supposed to read as slightly neuroatypical in earth terms, even for an Artonan? Just reading into it, feels like Alden being ace (Sleyca did a big comment on that last chapter). The loving of formality and rules because then he doesn't have to worry about choosing how to act. Feels very real and honest, like a person, not merely a character.

Danzafan37

#14 is actually probably a thing since the two brain thing, I bet some Artonans have a wandering eye mid most conversations 😅

Danzafan37

There is a deep intimacy here that's possibly a little early in the relationship. That can be non romantic but also, in most fiction, intimacy immediately leads to romance so it's pattern matching. Plus, I'm guessing readers skew a bit towards late teens to early twenties and those young-uns tend to be... Well basically way more horny 😅

S

Same: I was actually hoping Alden would A: realize he needs to talk about having an affixation and being a wizard with someone, B: realize that he might safely be able to open up to both Stuart and some of his family members if they all get tattoos, and C: put a bunch of Art'hs in the position of knowing something Earth-shattering but being unable to share the news.

S

Cold can numb pain. It also represents solitude, a path walked alone. It's symbolically perfect.

S

We should also recall that Alden is the Bearer of ALL Burdens. What if he could make the unbearable pain of affixation even slightly more bearable for a knight? Or a hundred knights? Wouldn't that make him... Super Supportive? Related: if there are any three people Alden would be motivated to do that for, despite his trauma, it's Stuart and Kibby and Boe.

Sirichai

I thought a few dozen chapters ago he was talking about getting close to affixing. Earth's contract just gives them a bit of wiggle room for when the level up actually happens. Or did he already do that back then and it just hasn't been mentioned much? It seems like if he had affixed already then the pain from it would have been brought up several times recently.

Sirichai

Where is the comment on Alden being ace? I couldn't find it.

Scandalion

That's an elite theory that makes a lot of sense. Showing being neurodivergent in an alien species by being single-minded in focus, and thus hyper-sensitivity is so interesting.

Kettle

But Alden and the mailbox are destined to be together! It’s going to happen!!!!!

Anon.

OTOH Stuart might just be the sort of person who would feel bad about using the sort of bad words Kibby would find childish.

Mack

Has anyone semi-accurately drawn some Artonans? I think I have a solid image in my head but still curious to see Joe or Stu, or even Esh or a generic Artonan.

glow

@Aifhwinx Fortunately, even if the Stuart-Alden relationship turns out to become romantic later down the line, soup has a TON of fantastic friendship representation. Alden's relationship with Boe is just as important and healthy, and his budding friendship with Lute is shaping up to be the same.

hercule pyro

Then he'd have to carry that pain himself, on top of his own pain, which sounds absolutely dogshit for him. Hypothetically if stu required someone else to take the pain of his affixation for him then he shouldn't be a knight

Baines

yea it really does fit with them sitting on the cushions, seems early though, guess we'll see

Mason W

“Tenderroot?” The soft-soft underbelly of forming a strong-sad relationship?

CaylaCat

the hush felt really natural to me there, it's a tender way to quiet someone dear to you who is starting to turn their thoughts and fears loose upon themself. also it's quasi-formal which Alden stroce to do all chappie

Aoinfinity

Do a Ctrl-F for "I'm reposting a comment made by Sleyca today" to get a top-level comment that quotes it. Timestamp says three days ago. Probably not worth expanding every single comment thread to search out the original post.

sebsebs

Alright, so many people commented that I'm not sure if my answer will have any point anymore lol but here goes. The way I said "sexual tension" was clumsy, because I typed this comment quite fast and because to me, in the early stages at least, romantic and sexual tension look very alike. As for the "hush" part, I tend to find it oddly intimitate, which feeds into the whole uncomfortably romantic undertone... but then again, English is NOT my native language! It may also be a generational difference or just a demographic one, more broadly. Just to be clear, I do not think the sexual tension is a good read of what's actually happening and I do not think the writing is to blame for this dissonance either. Tbh, it's a tricky situation to navigate with a lot to disentangle, not least the Alien/human differences and Stu being Stu... For example, eye contact definitely doesn't mean the same as usual here, but a silly reader may still get the wrong impression (because it's a bit funny too). Cheers ! :)

ouroboros

Histrionic was a new word for me. That's quite rare for me. You must be good at scategories. I wonder what trial he refers to? It sounds different than affixation somehow, but maybe that's just the language barrier. If it's and he's telling him, I hope Alden confides in him too. That way they can really be friends.

JJ Hunter

The indignant parallels of "You talked to Esh-erdi about me? When? *Why*?" and "[Evul] shouldn’t have called you just to say << histrionic >> things!” are so suggestive. Neither Alden nor Stu *wants* to worry the other unnecessarily, but both have a deep need to be understood and share in the comfort of mutual understanding. I can see why Esh and Evul each felt the need to meddle a bit beyond just the logistics of ensuring continued connection to make sure the other kid knows (or will be fully informed) of the recent stakes their friend has been wrangling.

ouroboros

Your name is funny. 😆 I had to read it like three times. Say that three times fast.

Francis

Ah space Jedi elves theory being validated - long robe with a cloth around the waist. Spending time trying to be one with nature...

Francis

I think she might encourage him to share more details of his life with Stu

Francis

Good catch. And not all of them are gifted wizards perhaps? So those rimgs are the ones made by those who don't have great authority control

Francis

It could be a fundraiser. Buy Sleyca's annotated Book 1 of SupSup. Easy buy decision.

Francis

That trope is my most despised in all of fiction. I drop series like hot potatoes when characters suddenly have convenient 50 IQ dropz

Francis

The way OA smeared his snot all over that window, so sexual!!

Gremlin

Its not how many words Sleyca knows its how she uses them.

Josh Brooks

I’ve always imagined that this series would take on that quality of being somewhat new every time you reread it. I definitely cared more about skills/system stuff the first time I went through, but now it’s like trying to be a Soup Sommelier, getting every note of writing I can find. What would you want to clean besides some typos? I guess that’s for the commentary, but as a reader/completely biased fan, everything feels consistent since at least chapter 4

Nyroe

I imagine them as short, skinny Hawaiians or islanders. Just with varying degrees of tan. Given their preference for warm weather, shorter stature, and their cultural practices, they seem like Alien Islanders to me.

Curtis

@Sirichai The Earth Contract offered Alden a level up because he had reached a high enough level of free authority. However, this is still significantly less than the amount of free authority at which Alden must affix or risk death. Alden probably won't affix until he has gathered the equivalent of 4-6 levels worth of authority.

Catherine

As soon as I finish a new chapter I end up reading it again immediately

Catherine

Who also needs a wizard/ knight friend to teach him. What an excellent combo! That’s my thought too :)

Catherine

Also Sina’s ceremonial death hit Stu so hard that he started hallucinating. I can understand why they are so worried.

Julian

@Explo Rin A friend of mine bought sumerhouse in norway. It's chilly there (for humans), do you think its werid?

Sunden

I mean, it sounds like Stuart and Alden's sleep schedules aren't going to be aligned. Alden will probably be up in the middle of the night when all the Artonans are sleeping. He could do it then.

maledei

There were some good sketches on the discord, showing kibby. They were a bit too alien maybe but looked great

Sunden

Something I don't see a lot of people speculating about is that, when Esh-erdi contacted Stuart to talk to him about Alden, Stuart almost certainly responded. How do we think Stuart's response message was worded? Was he clear on how much he values Alden's friendship? If that's the case, Esh-erdi now knows more about how close the two are becoming. They aren't just "becoming friends" like Alden claimed. They /are/ friends.

Julian

@Christine But Primary do not know Alden is a knight, so he would expect Stu-art'h to grow exponentially faster than Alden. Why choose complementary skills with partner that will grow to slow to be permanent.

Carl Earl

I'm so used to that word I didn't even find it notable until reading this comment. Fun fact, Histrionic, Hysteria, Hysterical, and Hysterectomy all share an etymology because the first three were thought to be medical conditions caused by a malfunctioning uterus and in extreme cases could be cured by the fourth.

DAK

This is probably one reason you hear it less lately. One has to be a little careful using the word in casual conversation, given that it implies a craziness attributable to a person being (anatomically) a female. If Stu wants to say it about his sister, so be it. If I say it about his sister, I might become like so many other solid objects that have crossed her path…

DAK

@Greg. Agree. The cost must be fairly high in whatever currency it is that Systems use. I bet Earth can update it, but probably would just as soon have Mother pay for it instead. Sadly, Alden probably will get an updated profile now or December, will come home having leveled up, and Klein and Saleh will see it as proof they were correct. All he needed was a vacation to finally get that one level we knew was due!

Milan Seyed Mahmoud

Please do this! And while you're at it, maybe file away the commentary as potential annotations for a print book?

Vysirez

Love the chapter. I really enjoy the interactions between Alden and Stuart.

DAK

Yeah, I think if Stuart had just said, "You stink! Overbearing knights stink the most! Go climb in a launderer and wash yourself!", he would probably want to crawl under a bed and die of embarrassment whenever his frontal lobe brought it back to his recollection. He could be hiding something deep, but he could just be feeling super cringy.

William Forrest

Perhaps not the ideal chapter to ask this on, but I want to know. Has anyone made a solid theory on what Evul's affixation is? I chapter 69 we have her '“I like exercise, too,” the woman said. “Sometimes I go and hit things just to watch them vaporize.”' and in 146 we got '“Oh. Evul. Yes. She does have a reputation as a disregarder of rules, conventions, and solid objects.”' I know there were hints about the primary's cutting ability. Is Evul a super basher? **edited because I STILL always forget that hitting enter enters my comment instead of starting a new paragraph

Jim

There is some discussion of Stu's neuro-possibilities on discord. A lot of it around the fact that he tends to use both eyes on things, implying it has his full and undivided attention. The question being is he atypical for Artonan's which can split their attention, and may be a major cause for concern from his family regrading his upcoming affixation.

Draken09

I think it is affixation. Just the proper, ceremonial, and more *accurate* word for it (when you can feel everything involved). I forget, didn't Stu-art'h say he hasn't actually gone through the process yet? There was a follow up conversation about the matter because of Joe's assumptions about pain tolerance.

Draken09

Oh yeah, Stu-Art'h outright said *oath* of friendship. I don't imagine it's remotely close to marriage, but it reeks of ratifying a lifelong bond. Possibly with magic involved, as a marker or something.

Christine

I actually already knew "histrionic", but "diaphanous" is completely new to me. I love how Sleyca can slip these words in without sounding pretentious.

Christine

@Julian If I wanted to be stubborn, my reply would be: Yes, it would be a poor decision, hence the family argument. But in truth, I agree with your point; I don't really think it's likely that Stu-art'h chose his skill to complement Alden's. I think it's much likelier that Stu-art'h had decided on his affixation/warp years ago, and that Alden's skill will be helpful only because Alden has the swiss army knife of skills. I was raising the possibility because I was excited, but I was reaching a bit too far with that theory.

Anon.

"Disregarder of Solid Objects" sounds like a good skill name

Ryan

Of free authority, you probably mean. He can gain all the bound authority he wants! He will probably have about 16 levels of both bound and free authority when he levels, so he is a ways off

Brian

I get what people are saying: “Defending the universe is all about having that one useful, well-designed, infinitely expandable skill to funnel all of your power into. As long as you don’t choose one of those, nobody will be interested in—” That doesn’t 100% mean that the skill has to be one of the originals. But the originals were designed by what was essentially described as an impossible coordination between the smartest members of their species for the purpose of saving their universe from apocalypse. I still get the distinct impression that mother was just being a little vague to be cute about Alden already meeting the prereqs, and that the original skills are still the only ones that qualify for knights.

SunderGoldmane

Now I want him to nonchalantly take off his old leather bracer and replace it with a thick friendship bracelet from stu.

SunderGoldmane

Oh my god, stu has been making quality of life spells for after he affixes! Thank you for connecting those dots.

John D Jones

Stu-art'h is the neurodivergent "Prince" of an alien "royal" family. I have zero ability to speculate about that and am continually amazed that Sleyca is able to write him in a way that doesn't feel "unreal" or "over-the-top" while also not turning him into a "human in weird clothes."

John D Jones

@ VP Probably Esh "insinuated" something like "So hey, the rhey-b't child who thinks you're his friend and almost died on Moon Thegund has now almost died AGAIN. Maybe don't do anything to make his life any harder than it absolutely has to be for now."

John D Jones

It'd be like befriending Countess Leonore of Orange-Nassau: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Countess_Leonore_of_Orange-Nassau and getting that palace invite. Google is powerful, yes.

John D Jones

@ Bbyh I think part of it is because this is the first time that Alden is meeting "Prince" Sind Stu-art'h. The first time Stu was an "important" kid who'd stupidly gotten his foot eaten by a fish and then ratted out Alden's weird authority to his father who then warned Alden that his life would basically "end" at age 30. The second time Stu was "that poor kid whose sister got an assisted suicide right in front of him, I hope he'll be okay. And can also get my ass back to Earth with a minimum of fuss." After that came a couple-three intergalactic "phone calls" which weren't that big of a deal. I'm "e-mail friends" with a couple of celebrities (at least "semi" celebrities) but I don't expect any of them to invite me to ever visit. Even the expected Dec. 15 visit was presented fairly casually as "Stu's Earth rhey-b't buddy is going to come over for a couple days." This time, Stu-art'h issued a formal invitation in his own (and his father's) name for Alden to visit. He did that after dealing with conflict with his own family and fighting through a "family negotiation" that was presumably on Alden's behalf so Alden could visit. That's a much bigger deal.

Gremlin

Not sure why we think histrionic is related to hysterical. According to a quick google its borrowed from latin and not the greek word hystera.

John D Jones

@ Francis Oh, nothing as normal as that. They were probably digging into the idea of PH levels and graphically insisting that Stu practice "safe sex" with his new boyfriend. What color would you be after most of your family dissected your sex life and tried to give clumsy advice about it?

John D Jones

@ Explo Rin The weather at KR1 is comparable to human Summer/Winter, which makes it uncomfortable for Artonans in the Winter and barely tolerable to them in the Summer. For Alden it's a "little chilly" in the Winter and probably like mid-Fall/Spring in the Summer.

Guus van der Borg

Oh damn, comment section update. Do I dare to hope it will be less shit?

Ducktacular

Every chapter we get to spend with Stu-art'h is a treasure.

Matt DiMeo

Updating his fake profile opens him up to needing to explain why his stats didn’t go up. He can fake a spell impression with actual casting, but it’s super weird if he didn’t get any foundation points to spend.

Heather White

I think leaves turn brown before falling because before the tree lets a leaf go (as part of a tree’s natural cycle), the tree takes back the authority/spiritual energy all its parts are infused with. A living leaf released by the tree still has a drop of the tree’s authority/spirit within, and dropping a living leaf only happens when the tree chooses for it to happen. That would explain why Alden’s leaf is still vibrant. It was a purposeful gift from the tree and still has a mote of the tree’s living authority within it. It’s still asserting itself against the universe.

Draken09

"That would make a great name for a rock band" is out. "Great name for an avowed skill" is in.

Heather White

I went on a vacation a few weeks ago, and reading this chapter made me think of my cats’ reaction when I got home. I was welcomed at the door, but my suitcase was even more interesting. Other Alden’s examination of Alden’s suitcase made me think the Artonan rabbits are actually cats. Except then there was that snotty, slobbery nose on the window, so maybe they’re dogs. Dog-cats? Dats? Caogs?

Obran

Any chance Stu’art will talk Alden to the Athurian grocery to buy Meat Petals or Meat Petal seeds. He can send the food product to Natalie or the seeds to Vandey.

Tycho Green

What's Vandy gonna do with them? If they go to a grocery store he would just put them in his bag and hand them over in person. He is only visiting for two days.

Obran

Sorry I forgot which person was the life shaper, meat petals could become an obstacle in the gym

GryphonKnight

Currently the app crashes when I click on a comment notification So… …no¿?

John D Jones

@ Obran No take backs on that. I now absolutely want Stu to take Alden to a food shoppe at an Artonan "RenFaire" AKA an "Arthurian grocery."

John D Jones

BTW Alden giving meat petal seeds to Jupiter sounds like a good idea, but it's Alden, so it'll probably result in this: https://youtu.be/mQJagD96X8U?t=15

Obran

Maybe Alden can pull the zucchini from the Meat Petal and be declared king of Whisper leaf University

Obran

Suspicion, Alden and Stu are gonna swear some oath that joins them, much like Alden is mystically joined to the alien in chicago. This joining well help Stu get through the upcoming trial (maybe sharing the pain around, or something), and the reason Alden wasn’t saved when he gave in to Mother, as he drowned, was because Mother foresaw, Alden helping Stu through his Trauma

Magnus Maximus

Apparently histrionic comes from the latin word for actor, whereas hysteric is derived from the greek word for womb

Anthony Lutz

It is a little bit off-topic to this specific chapter, but does anyone know why Sleyca does not capitalize the words Myself, Himself, and Chaos and Authority (and possibly other things) in context to their specific meanings within this story, only sometimes italicizing them? To my reading, Stu uses both myself and Myself in the second last sentence of this chapter, where he knows his own limitations (myself) and that he will "forge Myself" which I read as creating/affixing his Authority into a skill, making himself to be more unique. IIRC Alden noted that the word in Artonan is the same, which initially confused him until gaining Authority Sense, when he realised there were two separate definitions for the same words. So since the story is from Alden's perspective and he should know when things should be the proper noun versions, I think it should be written as such.

Shawn

Brian, also check out Chapter 39. Joe agrees that skills are for avowed, not knight (I've added the 6 asterisks for emphasis). "“That’s because you’re not letting me finish. There was an initial set of around three hundred skills, designed with the fervent passion and care of those who believed they were on a holy mission to save existence itself. The designers proposed that ***delivering these skills to Avowed*** and facilitating their use should be the entire point of the Contract."

wakeuptheresbacon

Hi all, to assuage the soup drought I compiled a list of all of Sleyca's comments on Patreon posts: https://soup-comments.vercel.app/Sleycas_Patreon_Comments.html (don't share the link outside Patreon discussion channels as it does have RR spoilers!)

What can he share that isn't covered by Joe's secrecy tattoo?

jg

Nah his fake profile skill can just level up so LVL 4 boab LVL 5 overall

jg

No Stu-art'h stated I heard enough from esh-erdi to know it was unsettlingly similar to moon thegund So vague insinuations are something else...

Matt DiMeo

There is an effort to do that on a thread on the discord, but it’s done ad hoc. Cool.

Radha Patel

I see you, wakeuptheresbacon. The one person Alden once hated more than the Body Drainer

Obran

Basically Alden becomes Stuart’s Familliar.

Emily Gurnavage

They sound like tiny dragons/drakes with a personality like a mix between a cat and a puppy. The Artonan name for them sounds like rabbit in English, but Im pretty sure the name is the only relation. They dont seem like rabbits physically or mentally, really.

Emily Gurnavage

It really does though. Even if it aint for Evul, Sleyca should note that one down somewhere for future use.

Danzafan37

Terrestrial_Biped

Capitalizing authority and chaos doesn't make sense. They're not proper nouns. They're different meanings layered over a preexisting English word, but we do that all the time in English and don't make a big deal of it by messing with capitalization and stuff. Adding capitalization might make them feel a bit more weighty, but it would also look silly and unprofessional to anyone who wasn't already deeply invested in the world and the story, because you aren't supposed to emphasize things by randomly capitalizing them. The italics seems to be Sleyca's style of choice for informing us that a word is being said in a different language than the rest of the line, or that a non-English concept is being layered onto an English word on those few occasions when we really need to know that's happening. Otherwise, she lets us sort out which sense is being used the exact same way we always do, whether reading or conversing. I think it's a reasonable choice.

Terrestrial_Biped

I don't think an elephant can experience more pain than a mouse, and I don't think that having more authority makes affixation hurt worse.

Tycho Green

Capitalizing terms like that to emphasize the significance they have in this setting and considering the importance and specificity of them, it would make sense to capitalize them if Sleyca chooses to do it. It is a stylistic preference whether to write these terms in lowercase or not. Either choice is considered to be professional. Rowling capitalized the word Unforgivable Curses and each spell for example, Brandon Sanderson capitalized words like Hemalurgy and Stormlight and Robert Jordan always capitalized The One Power or the True Source. So I guess it’s simply a stylistic choice how she wants to present her terms to us readers. Consistency in presentation is more important when referring to concepts specific to the world building of a story.

Terrestrial_Biped

It was kind of jarring for me too. Seemed out of character for Sleyca's writing to have that complete mood switch between the last two sentences.

Stonedwarf Stonedwarfson

Esh and Lin in some way broke themselves for each other. Unless Breaking equals re affixing, I don't see how Alden and Stu could do this for each other. At least not yet.

Kent

This chapter was really great!

JJ Hunter

I'm wondering if we're headed for another tandem partners setup like Boe and Alden, except less deliberate mirroring and more complimentary someday battle-partners.

Terrestrial_Biped

I personally don't think more authority means more pain. I don't think an elephant can't experience more pain than a mouse can.

Obran

Anyone know if Alden can eat animals that are not sapient? Like if he were to chow down on a jellyfish that had been brain dead since birth, would that be edible. Oe if he got a life shaper to create a breed of cows that didn’t have a brain or nervous system, would he be able to eat that?

Terrestrial_Biped

If Stu is old enough to affix now, then Kibby will probably be old enough to affix a year before the Primary reevaluates Alden. So I do think that will happen before the end of the story.

Terrestrial_Biped

Stu's family are worried that when he affixes about a month from now, he won't be able to bear up under the pain and will choose ritual suicide over continuing to suffer. Stu could avoid all risk by choosing not to affix, but he is committed to his choice and will not turn away. While his family think he will break, he himself believes that he will withstand the pain and successfully become a knight.

Anthony Lutz

He cannot eat any animal because the gremlin is very picky with unknowns. during the CH91 "Forty Pinapples", Alden successfully ate a meatball because he got it into his stomach using his skill. Gorgon also successfully ate a fly by letting it crawl down his throat on its own. its more about the gremlin not knowing if the animal is sapient, and instead just assumes it is and refuses to allow it. Gorgon said the only animal on earth that realistically he needs to be wary of is eating octopus, everything else should be fair game.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Oh no, the title Super Supportive never referred to being a sidekick hero It refers to being a very good therapist, close friend, and emotional support for people like Stu

sketerpot

It’s confirmed that Stuart is considered weird even by other Artonans. This is mentioned by Evul the first time she calls Alden on his behalf.

Anthony Lutz

@terrestrial Fair enough regarding non-English concepts using English words making it unnecessary to capitalise, but I have to disagree that it doesn't apply to Chaos within this story. Humans know what Chaos is, they even have a Chaos alarm, and all avowed know that the strongest of them are likely to be summoned to assist with Chaos exposure, ie Matadero

Anita

I think maybe Mother has a requirement built in that accepting the knight burden can't be made under duress. Like Alden was about to drown, and his decision couldn't be accepted because of his circumstances. I think it would be a normal requirement for Mother, especially since they see this is a sacrifice. It's not a sacrifice if you're forced into it.

Terrestrial_Biped

That makes "chaos" a noun doing its noun job and distinguishing a thing from other things, not a proper noon. Humans know what tornados are; in tornado country there are even tornado alarms; search and rescue might be called up to assist in the wake of a tornado. None of that makes tornado a proper noun nor merits capitalizing it, even though they are a rather unique type of storm. Proper nouns are nouns for persons, or specific places, or specific organizations of people. Not for types of places; Chicago is a proper noun, mesa and arroyo are not. Not for types of organizations; England is a proper noun, nation and team are not. And not for things, except in the various cases where English is making an exception; not for storms or natural forces.

Anthony Lutz

You make a very convincing argument. I didn't really think about what makes a noun properly proper. Also yea i guess chaos could be considered a weather event. I suppose Sleya is just following correct English conventions instead of "common story lore words" conventions.

Jim

Alden in his best Freud voice: So, tell me about your mother who has foresaken you.

denatured

It probably shocked Alden for a lot of reasons. Imagine a big handful of caregivers, where every single one of them is invested in undermining your confidence as you face a life-or-death challenge. When Stu was younger it probably made sense to them to try to scare him off the path. But once they got on the scare train they never got off? Even when it became clear he wouldn't change his mind? So now their tactic has become a trap. They keep hoping it will work, but instead it's actually harming his chances. And despite his words, he's obviously infected by their doubt. He's putting off friendships and giving gifts so people will remember him when he's gone. And the people deciding to wait and see before committing to friendship! That's not how that should work. Stu, don't be friends with those garbage people later. Even if they beg you.

ImNotHere

Is Alden leaf still green because it is still linked to the tree like the bowl in the entrance exam?

Radha Patel

This is just a thought about the personal advisement meeting two chapters ago. I was rereading the Ripples chapters, and I think Finlay is the one who reported Alden's Peace of Mind wordchains to Klein. When everybody gets off the bus on the bridge, Finlay makes eye contact with Alden and specifically wishes him good luck. The only reason to do that is concern for Alden in particular, and I now think the concern stems from overhearing Alden stacking wordchains in the back of the bus

Matt DiMeo

I’m guessing not so strongly, because presumably he has preserved it in his bag without any noticeable hit to his authority.

FruitsPunchSamurai

Not saying this to be insulting but I’m pretty sure you are just seeing things because of your own personal inclination. There really is no reason to assume Alden is more interested in men than he is in women. In fact, everything points towards him being very very neutral. He does have more close male friends but that’s pretty normal culturally for a guy his age. And in regards to the relationships themselves, I truly do not see how Alden is treating Stu and different than someone like boe. Where do people get the idea that one is leaning romance while the other is friendship ? My guess is that people realized boe is straight so Stu is the only male-friend left of whom we don’t know their sexual orientation. So there is a possibility and people jump on it.

ACX

I think having the ability to hold two train of thought in mind means artonan would suffer more, in everyday life. Alden has noticed a greater appreciation for physical sensations, and I think it's because they help him not think of his bound authority

UpgrayeDD

I too thought that leaf was still green because it was still "authority controlled" by it's parent tree like the bowl. Unlike @matt DiMeo I don't believe that Alden has "preserved" his bag with the green leaf, but I could be misremembering.

Endaris

@Matt: I think this might be different because the tree as the owner/creator genuinely entrusted the leaf (unlike the bowl owner) and is happy to temporarily relinquish the link for Alden.

DAK

Not related to anything at all in this chapter, but I think a poster with the Earth robot sitting behind a desk, hands folded (however that works without finger), leaning forward, with caption "Good. Fear for your own wellbeing is an appropriate response" would be kind of great. If I was Avowed I might get it as a tattoo. Mother lounging with hot chocolate and smirking at the camera (with one eye still looking at the marshmallows) would be kind of great as well. So many potential captions there, though. Maybe go kind of dark with "You will fight back, and you will lose. You will beg me to stop, and I will not." Or maybe just "Eat your vegetables, grow your authority big and strong".

Benjamin Helkey

I'm glad you are taking some time off to build your backlog. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

ImNotHere

Indeed, we need to see what happens if Alden tries to pickle the leaf. But as UpgrayeDD says, I think that Alden use it as bookmark in the spell book that is in his room or in system storage. So not yet preserved

ImNotHere

marathon? I was thinking at least Ironman to get out of highschool😀 But It is indeed nice that Sleyca take care of herself

David

Is it a soup drought or a soup famine? Really makes you think.

Clint

Alden will be able to eat cow meat only once he's convinced the gremlin that cows don't have souls. Alden knowing that the cow in question had no brain probably won't help, but every time he preserves a meatball and swallows it he gets the gremlin just a bit more comfortable with the weird and unfamiliar food animals of Earth. At least until Alden forgets and eats some calamari and initiates a ritual to grant wishes to the dead squid.

Stylemys

Alden was concerned about her wanting to. She’s guilt-racked, wants to make amends for her family’s death, and affixation would bypass her Authority control issues. He thought that would make her a potential recruit.

SnuggleCat

I think he, Boe, and Stu will all make friendship oaths to each other and become the Best Team TM

Matt DiMeo

Royal Road didn’t get a skip, so it’s a actually a loss of backlog.

Emily Gurnavage

Half decent point. I checked, we are still 13 chapters ahead and the Patreon page advertises 10+ ahead. So its kind of sort of only a 2-3 chapter backlog for RR, assuming RR never eats into the Patreon 10 chapters. So yea, if RR doesn't get the skips in the future they will catch up with the Patreon chapters in just a few short months. . Perhaps Sleyca does plan to skip on RR too, but at better stopping points?

puppy0cam

Sleyca now takes a week off every month now. It's just that while the backlog is still nonexistent it means that RR has its break on schedule but Patreon takes a while to get its chapter so sleyca is still playing catch-up and sometimes (seems to be often nowadays) needs extra time to work on the chapter

Alex Scriber

Re: Lies being expensive, and Alden’ fake profile being a lie. The systems have mentioned using loopholes several times. I could see this being an example of that. Lies are expensive, but withholding information is free. As long as Alden’s fake profile doesn’t claim he can do anything he can’t, I think it might fall under withholding information and be free. After all, Alden does have 4 “levels” worth of authority bound in BoaB. That he has more authority than that bound might not matter from a “cost” perspective. We’ve also seen that Systems have a great deal of freedom in how they present information about skills and bound authority. Really the system misleads Avowed constantly, contrary to what Alden thinks, that it can mislead other people isn’t surprising.

Benjamin Helkey

RoyalRoad skipped chapters have been at different times from the patreon skips. RR skips can be arranged to fit into the story. Patreon skips to fit the writing process into real life.

Alex Scriber

She could be the Knight equivalent of a building puncher with most people of her authority in what humans call foundation points.

Partha Peddi

What is the trial Stu has to go thru? Has it been discussed already? Any thoughts will be appreciated.

ImNotHere

not yet said clearly in the chapters but most probably bounding his authority in a skill and becoming a knight

Partha Peddi

Why is affixing being called a trial? Could it be due to the post affixation sensitivity/pain?

Dalton C Vieira

Yes. Pain/discomfort so bad and so life-long that his older sister chose death because she could not stand it.

Partha Peddi

Alden was knocked out during the affixation process. Maybe the Knights stay awake, and that is considered the trial?

Radha Patel

I think it's implied that Alden was not knocked out. The tree roots were holding him down while he screamed and thrashed from the pain of affixation

Partha Peddi

@Radha Alden had a broken affixation, which needed repair. In his first affixation, he was knocked out.

Alan Miller

Without an authority sense you're not able to feel the affixation, but for some Avowed it's still significant enough that they are knocked out or faint (see Hazel when Alden does the trade). It seems reasonable to assume that your Authority and sense of it both grow with your growth as a wizard, so what Alden experienced may be the least bad it will ever be - and it still incapacitated him for months. Stu is an accomplished and experienced wizard, so it may well be worse for him than it was for Alden.

VP

RR is technically the ideal version. Their chapters are more edited, get retcons from the first go (the Boe flashbacks/chaos surfer dude intro) and their skips are made to create the ideal reading conditions. I think they got warnings before the Velra novella so they knew what to expect, when and for how long.

VP

But I am too impatient to be a RR reader, so even if it is technically better I am still here

Kim Enteiu

“Can You Grab a Dustpan” Causes the molecules of an object to vibrate from a focal impact.

Kim Enteiu

“Not everyone who stays feels like casting spells.” That is such a subtle brush-off of the magic rings that I missed it the first time. Of course the cottages are optimized for the raw authority senses of the newly affixed.

JJ Hunter

Finlay and Alden seem to get along well. Alden keeps preserving Finlay's second caffeinated drink for him during their science lectures. I think it's in character for Finlay in an unusual disaster situation to be presenting as even more sincere and earnest than usual. Finlay was about to go run to safety ahead of literally all his peers; Alden is a peer en route to becoming a friend, and Finlay personally knows from their combat assessment that Alden is one of the squishiest, least foundation points-enhanced members of their class. I'm not surprised Finlay is wishing Alden luck.

David

What do y’all think Stu’s power will be when he affixes? I keep thinking about that fruit bowl. Stu likes formality, structure, and symbolism. He’s also obsessed with purpose and the nature of things. Based off of that, I have two guesses for what his powers might do 1) He will be able to reinforce the principles that he thinks an object has. Make things harder, sturdier, sharper, heavier, or more resistant to change (chaos) 2) He’ll be able to create structures that accomplish some task. Chaos-resistant fields, barriers, and platforms at first, but later he’ll be able to make complex machines or automatons on the fly.

Adam Andersson

Normal Earth leaves generally don't turn brown on the ground either. They turn brown because that's the color of leaves minus the clorophyl (can't spell it in English), and the trees reclaim the clorophyl before releasing the leaves.

David

One cool application of 1) would be as a kind of anti-demon control mage. Eg “a demon with that many arms should have difficulty coordinating them” or “a demon that large should be slower and tear itself apart from internal forces.” Despite him being a wizard, I imagine Stu as a frontline tank type. But one does not simply “tank” a demon, so a mage-tank build focused on denial/reality enforcement would be pretty neat.

Josh Smith

We can't forget tho Alden isn't like other Humans or even avowed he's already had a small authority sense from Gordon and a high chaos resistance from birth

John D Jones

See the worst part of this waiting is that for me Soup is not coming "tomorrow." It's coming in maybe 36 hours or so. Meaning I'm this guy but without the lines of coke: http://static.demilked.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/90s-cartoon-characters-drug-addicts-drawings-paul-ribera-3.jpg

Andrew Simpson

I don't think there has been a strong correlation between Characters personalities and their powers, other than Alden. But maybe knights are different since they might (probably do?) get to pick

Andrew Simpson

I don't think she is back logging, I think she is still recovering from sudden interruption a couple weeks ago

Andrew Simpson

She's pretty low on the knight totem pole, but so it's Esh, and he's a badass still, so it's hard to know how powerful she is. Molecular basher sounds legit tho.

Andrew Simpson

Don't you remember when waves dropped and sleyca described the bubble of water as a cataract and everyone lost their mind because everyone assumed it was a misspelling of catamaran instead of sleyca just knowing more words than the rest of us?

puppy0cam

I think he might take something similar to what Sina-Art'h took. Or at least one that has the capability to do cool things in collaboration with her skill. Kinda like how MOTHER hinted that Alden's skill has some interesting interactions with other skills.

Andrew Simpson

They're just short navi for me. Wide/flat features with larger foreheads, some shade of blue/purple skin, hair often in a braid. It lines up pretty well.

ouroboros

I knew what that was so glazed over it, but I'm a man who never went into acting so I guess that this one slipped by.

Terrestrial_Biped

It just occurred to me that Alden may have already met Stu's other parents without realizing it. While he was in the weird, offensive not-a-wizard costume. That's gonna be... interesting. On the plus side, we might find out what that costume actually was.

puppy0cam

that outfit is going to haunt him once his authority sense becomes known.

puppy0cam

I'd like to imagine that the mourning name of Sina-Art'h was John. Because then she would be John Sina!

Endaris

This "two consecutive skips" thing feels a little crushing, yes. But on the other hand, when Sleyca still had a backlog we'd often get chapter updates around 22-24 UTC rather than the 7-9 UTC that is baseline now so you could hope to have soup before turning lights off as a EU person. The skips may bring us back there!

PatienceHoney

Foreshadowing... Alden in wizard rabbit costume going around saying, "I'm definitely just a Ryeh-b’t. Any resemblance to a wizard was purely coincidental."

Kbzzy

Pictures of Alden in that magic rabbit costume are going to be so iconic when he’s older. Everyone at that event is going to be shocked when they realise he really was a magic rabbit lmao

Aspiring Moth

I don't see a reason why an artonan couldn't take the name of an avowed (or even non avowed) alien as their mourning name. humans are a bit too new for it to have happened so far probably, but name puns like this surely have happened in some languages

Aspiring Moth

all true, but the comment section here (excluding this chapter's shipping wars and a few others low points in the past) is half the fun. royalroad comments are absolutely terrible and not worth reading in comparison

Anita

Or maybe stu reveals it to us ? His aunt or cousin got the photo from a friend and shows it to stu ? So he keeps bringing it up with Alden as a joke in certain situations ? Maybe comenting on the apropiate lenght of the sleeve and how his jacket was 1 inch too short. I could see stu nitpick a photo of Alden until he found even the gel type he had in his hair.

werotan

I comune with the ryleth!

Simon

Hey, it's not the ryeh-b't's fault, it's Alden's luggage, she thought it was for her!! :D

Brell

She has the Let Me Harry Your Luggage For You skill.

Shmooggie

You have forced my hand, after being left with no chapters for 6 days, I have decided to become a patron. You have made a novel so well that I want to be a patron.
