More explanation below!!!

Here is a reminder of some of the rewards that have been given at every level :) At the bottom are "group" rewards that are unlocked on a semi-monthly basis. This is the current reward table:

And this is the current description!

Sorry the prices are weirdly described in $CAD... they are $1, $2, $5 and $10 respectively.

"Aaa what's happening..."

Yesterday I shared a review of the past five years of work. In that period of time I've also really improved my personal approach to health, and made some career moves. I'm really happy with my current job :)

Throughout the pandemic, I've spent a lot of time reflecting. I realized that I want writing and art to be a bigger part of my life. Creating is foundational to who I am, and I want to make as many amazing things as possible with my time here on earth!

I finally feel like I know what I want to create:

1) "Solarpunk" Fiction. This is the type of science fiction that imagines our society surviving and thriving, having adapted to a new climate. It's the opposite of dystopia/apocalyptic fiction, and right now in fiction there aren't enough people imagining what sustainable flourishing actually looks like. I feel called to this work. "Good Bones" (the short I'm working on now) will live in this genre. Some of my older works touched on these themes.

2) Gentle Tech Explainers. I want to become a "science communicator" - an ambassador for the good parts of tech. I want to make more comics like Shenzhen Fast. I think there is still space for explaining tech concepts in a cute and approachable way.

3) also draw many cute cats along the way :). (Like I'm doing with career zine). I am just... happiest drawing silly-looking cats, no matter what.

To achieve that goal, I need to improve my marketing :( I now feel pretty confident about what I'm making and how I'm running this Patreon, but I need to be better at explaining it. I need more focused and clear communication of what I'm doing, and get better at "selling" works in general (outside of Patreon). I think that this will require some tweaks to Patreon. (You'll also notice some tweaks on my other """"channels"""")

What I've LOVED about Patreon

  • Having a consistent place to post "works in progress" and get feedback
  • Having a more private space, where I can have more 1:1 interactions with awesome people. More space for vulnerability and nuanced thought.
  • Sharing all sorts of different stuff (other social media channels tend to freak out if you're inconsistent)
  • Having a space to experiment with fun short-run merch or other short-term projects

What Patreon has enabled for me

The money I make here allows me to have way more impact as one smol bean! I'm able to hire help and leverage my time so more of my work sees the light of day.

  • Hiring support (flatters, colourists, designers, admin assist, editors...)
  • Investing in timesaving things: higher power software and tools, brushes, and even paying for things like cleaners so I have more capacity to draw and create!

The support you give here makes a real and tangible difference, and I can't thank you enough. That's my main motivation for tweaking the offering: to see if I can get more people to join us!

I want to ensure that this place still remains fun and high value for all of you!

I've done a bunch of research and so far it seems like it helps to have fewer, clearer Patreon benefits, and fewer tiers. I want to be able to clearly explain to people what they can expect by pledging, and meet or exceed their expectations :)

So, depending on your feedback, I'd like to merge some of the tiers. This is my proposed structure:

  • "Testers" $2, (Combination of Early Access/Sneaky Peaks.)
  • "Lab Techs" $7, (Combination of Behind the Scenes and Lab)
  • NEW: Co-LAB-orators $25 (More of an "angel investor" level for those who want to be more deeply involved.)

This isn't an announcement, this is a conversation :)

Please let me know what you think in the survey and in the comments below! Does this direction (Solarpunk/Gentle Tech Explainers) make sense to you based on what you've seen? Thanks for reading all of this!!!!!!

Patreon Feedback 2021

Hi everyone, I want to refine my offerings on Patreon to make sure you're getting more of what you like and less of what you don't care about :) Thanks so much for being a Patron and taking the time to reply, it helps a ton!

The Solarpunk idea and also the Tech explanation sounds really cool and really fitting for you. I'd love to see this develop!

Faith Nelson

So, is the $10 level disappearing? I'd just shuffled enough stuff around to be able to jump to that, but there's no way in heck I could do $25. =(

jam

These answers are already super helpful, thank you everyone!!

jam

No, thanks for bringing that up. I want to bring more people into the lab-type content, so it's being discounted to $7! I haven't yet figured out what I want to do for $25 but the only thing I know for sure is that "stuff in the mail" will go there. I just can't make the math work at $10 for international post rates OTL

Ali Grotkowski

I know that some patreon folks discount their patreon support if you pay in advance for a full year. Are you going to consider that option? Not sure if it helps you for budgeting purposes or anything but it's something to think about. I know that when/if you change the patreon levels on some patreons the people backing at levels that don't exist in the new structure often get grandfathered to continue paying at that rate -- will that happen with you? Just stuff to think about! I've switched my support to paying once annually for a few Patreons and to switch to paying in Canadian dollars for a few others but I only tend to make these changes when the new levels are appealing enough to me... for some Patreons I have kept paying at a grandfathered level instead.

jam

Yes, thanks for bringing this up. There have been a number of tax changes in different jurisdictions, and thus corresponding changes in the back-end of Patreon as a result. To be perfectly honest......... I'm desperately behind on all of this. It's confusing and complex, and I never want to make a change that will negatively impact my Patrons so I try to do my research into them fully before implementing them. It requires a lot of time that I don't have, which is why I'm behind. I honestly don't now yet how, logistically, this gets implemented. I do know that some of the newer features are only available if I give up some of my older grandfathered features (I forget what exactly). Part of this conversation is trying to figure out what we all (collectively) want going forward, so I can then make those tradeoff decisions. I would like to be able to offer in local currencies, and annual options, because I think giving people more flexibility in how they want to pledge/budget would be good. It might (?) kick me off the ability of billing everyone on the first day of the month, instead of an "anniversary" of whenever they happened to pledge. I thiiiiink that's the major tradeoff. If anyone has feedback (pros and cons) of how other, newer patreons are running from a billing perspective I'd love to hear it.

jam

Ok yeah I'm on a "founders" membership I'm grandfathered in on, so if I lose that by accident I also have to give another 3% to Patreon

Ali Grotkowski

Yes, and as a backer of various Patreons, I know better than to make ANY changes on a bunch of 'em or I lose my ability to only pledge $1 US for some of them as that option doesn't exist if I make changes for example etc.

jam

Ok yeah so I looked into this, I have a "founder's" rate and I can't... find the setting to enable annual. Honestly I don't want to lose this rate and I see no need to go into Patreon's newer merch offerings (I can handle that, Merch isn't really why I'm here). I'm also like 1000% happy to grandfather anyone in on a rate if they've been here a long time, so I'll have to figure out a clever way to give people a good road into that.

Ali Grotkowski

Sounds good to me! Honestly depending on what you end up with for rates/levels, I'm open to making changes. It's generally the Patreons I'm less engaged with that I stay on a grandfathered old rate... but of course I'm sure you have some patrons that are the same for you! :)

jam

... and that's ok! :) My goal is to give people a good range of options to suit their needs and wants.

jam

To follow up on this, in order to have annual billing I also have to use "charge up front" payments.

Miyaa

I recall a tweet where Ursula Vernon had commented how Pokémon is the best example of Solarpunk fictional world. So maybe you can use playing Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl as research!

Matt Zweig

I would love to read your Solarpunk works! Are you thinking of comics or short stories?

jam

Both! Good Bones is going to be a short comic. I've written a few short stories too that I will be editing down and trying to get them into magazines next year.

jam

That's a great idea, I never thought about Pokemon through a solarpunk lens before 🤔

NJGR

I'm super excited for the direction you're taking. I'm not sure about the cost of the upper tier, although I always want to support you at the highest level. I think for that one, examples of the physical items would be helpful to draw more people in to that tier. What kind of advertising/marketing are you thinking about? -Jess

jam

Yeah the shipping cost is the big rub on that tier price.... My vision for that tier is that as I get better at making stuff, they would just receive a big ol' box of stuff that just arrives before it's even available for sale anywhere else! My main vision of who would support something like that would be someone who really enjoys my work, but maybe lives overseas and it's impractical to find me at a show or pay exorbitant slow shipping for every tiny sticker and zine. I don't think I'm ready for "advertising". "Marketing" just means cleaning up my web presence a bit, using every "channel" for what it's best at. I could go into this at length, but it took me a really long time to understand how social media works now, and now that I *think* I've got a handle on it, I just need to reorganize a little bit and then hopefully more people will be organically discovering all sorts of stuff as I continue to create and post.

NJGR

Oooooh, I love that idea and it is DEFINITELY worth the $25 for that. That would make it worth it for me, in the US, because I know shipping from CA just to the US is pretty high, too. I also wouldn't have to take the mental space of remembering to grab things when they are available for sale if it's just coming to my house! Win/win!

2023-06-23 22:02:15 Yeah! Awesome, that's the main idea. I need to up the frequency of printing/making stuff before I think I can make that tier price worth it, but that's my ultimate vision for it. What do you think if I moved "vlog" type stuff to that level on a monthly basis? Like a monthly studio-vlog or speed-comic update and private Q&A?

2023-06-23 22:02:13 I wanted to think about this question a bit, because vlogging (for me, that is) can be hit or miss. I would love a studio update, Q&A, or even something like a live draw like you did with Sfé. Even like an hour once a month (for the drawing idea) would be fun, even without much or any conversation. I think I just really enjoy seeing the process and things on the creator's end, so anything like that is added value to me (but never required for support, because I know it also takes time to do!) -jess

I appreciate you taking the time to think about it! Livestream of process is definitely something that I want to get back into. I loved doing "hyggecast" with Sfé but time zones made it really difficult to coordinate. (They are 4h ahead so by the time my energy was starting to ramp up theirs was starting to ramp down). So I have given a LOT of thought into how I can make my livestream space faster to set up and more comfortable, and also who I could recruit as a same-time-zone stream partner :) I will work on this!
