One reason I feel I have trouble getting the "90s feel" from this show is they use a lot of more recent cover songs for 90's songs in the show.

See to me the songs have nothing to do with it. It's the fact that the references to the time don't actually impact the plot much at all. Compare the Atari or the color tv in 70s to the computer in 90s. The computer should honestly be a HUGE revelation in the characters life and its used as a plot device that is barely more important than a pad of paper
