Russians are typically used as bad guys (at least in the US) due to the whole capitalism vs. communism Cold War situation. It would be odd to have Russians as good guys during the later half of the 1900's when Russia and the US were each other's greatest enemies. Similar to this, movies and shows don't typically have the Germans as good guys when they take place in the first half of the 1900's.

I figured Hopper was alive because of the teasers at the end of the last season, but I don't like how they went about it. I thought maybe he got sucked into the Upside Down, or, and it's been a while since I watched season 3, but I thought there was a connection be Hawkins and Russia through that crack and he ended up there somehow. But just that he somehow miraculously survived that explosion and got taken hostage by the Russians who were already there...that's just lazy writing to me, and I'm not enjoying it that much either.
