I think it's time to retire the iPad and bump the quality up.  So here's the first video in 1080p with manually controlled focus hunt to avoid nuisance fucussing.  Sadly the built in microphone faces down onto the bench, so it's not as good as the ipad was for voice, but on the other hand I can use a head mounted microphone for consistent volume.  I may need to find a way to boost the volume though.  Maybe a different microphone system.

A genuinely nice Chinese cloud themed night light.

It's refreshing to find a genuinely well designed night light with a quality case construction, good light diffusion and a neat circuit board. Like this one. Note that this video is also a test of a new recording system. Resolution is 1080p. Close-up views are also going to be a lot sharper.

oooOOOooo new camera!

Looks good! What is the model of camera?

Great video, but the audio is funky. It's a bit boomy compared to what it was before. Maybe low pass it?

Anonymous

New camera looks good, but it also shows all the cuts and bruises on your hands much clearer.

Scars in HD! :P

Audacity to boost the volume. Also Banggood sells an good microphone for a few dollars. One of their cheapest, most reviews and good reviews.

Had to rewind a bit to check if I was imagining "nano farts". Thanks for the vid!

Very good BidClive, seen the difference first few seconds. Mics. are cheap now.

Modern cameras tend to be very cramped and full of fragile ribbon cables so I generally avoid doing it for a least a few weeks. This ones a phone, so I can guess that it's the usual tiny PCB with equally tiny cameras attached to it with tiny ribbon cables. Most of the space in the phone will be the battery.

I never had any problem with the video quality of the iPad, but this still looks good, though constantly adjusting the focus might become annoying in the long term. The audio actually sounds fine.

My voice is actually quite bassy, but I'll probably experiment with the position. It's currently on the forehead position musical-style.

bigclive

On most videos the focus will probably stay in one area, but it's good to be able to do close-ups. I may add some dedicated lighting round the lens for macro video.

I'll probably experiment with microphones to see if I can boost the native recorded volume. It avoids the risk of messing up the audio or causing it to go out of sync.

i tend to watch on my phone so never really noticed the lack of detail on the small screen, tried it on the computer and was really surprised by the level of detail of the new camera looks really good.

Looks good, Apart from volume the mic is surprising good and clear with a far better frequency response than your previous mic.

The quality on the new camera is fantastic compared to the iPad, but some volume boosting for the mic would be much appreciated. What camera are you using, by the way?

Anonymous

Definition is great can pause and see every detail. I like it however not looking forward to you slicing yourself open in full HD :)

All good Clive, except for the volume. I'm watching on my laptop and have the volume up full and I'm straining to hear your dulcet tones.

Macro shots are a great improvement Clive!

Looks great! I look forward to more pink plastic carnage in full HD. The only thing missing now is the smell of cremated electronics....

Anonymous

The new camera is a definite improvement.

Anonymous

what sort of cam? be aware that in film, audio is more important than video. and this audio is... well....

Anonymous

New camera a great improvement, just a bit more volume for the Mutt and Jeff amongst us.

Anonymous

I found a solution to the low volume. It's called "VOL+" on my amplifier. :)

Swap to led's to green ones in the clover leaf pattern -- Instant decoration for Paddy's day on 17th March. Break out the Guinness!

Th e new camera looks rather nice, and your focus doesn't seem to shift all too often. However, I think your recording settings may be a little too high leading to visual fatigue. I suggest limiting your frames per seconds to 25 and maybe using a softening filter, it'll make your video much more gentle on the eye. Also, thanks for the entertaining videos.

Stephen Bell

That's a huge improvement, Clive. Now you need a short intro montage with music. (Should I volunteer?) :-)

Anonymous

Hey Clive! Definite improvement in the video department. To be honest, i never noticed any difference in the audio. Anyway... I'm sure you'll sort out any teething problems. Keep up the good work Big Man :)

Clive, yep the new def is def better but big man you need to give your hands some more love. 1080p shows up too well the hard life your hands lead. Perhaps some cheap Chinese moisturiser tests so we can see your skin look 20 years younger.

bigclive

I don't think any cream could make my hands look pretty . They have a hard life.

bigclive

I've deliberately avoided an intro because I prefer to just plough into the video.

It's proving a problem as it appears to be locked in the automatic gain control of the phone. The only adjustment that controls that is firmly locked away in engineer menus, and they appear to have added an extra lock to keep kids from blowing up their speakers by ramming everything up to full.

New camera looks good. Thanks for another good video

Excellent. The clarity of the view of the components bodes well for more complicated circuits...and "medical" device demonstrations. :-)

looks good!

My "intro" comment was made very tongue in cheek, Clive. After all, with 224,641 subscribers, it ain't actually broke! :-) The higher def and close up ability is a big improvement, though.
