The real point of switching the death notes was so that ryuk ends up being attached to misa and makes the eye deal with her which will pay off big. Ryuk also brought up in episode 3 that the numbers the eyes sees above a person's head are in shinigami time. The creators did have an equation on how to convert it to human time for lights lifespan but it was so complex they forgot what it was and from that point on they just made up random numbers. Also, there are 2 rules always shown in between the intermission

Also. I think you guys are making the life extension thing WAY to complicated. In the Death Note Universe, A Shinigami’s purpose is to take life of humans. So to purposefully do something that extends a human’s life goes outside of the Shinigami’s natural purpose, instantly killing them & adding their remaining years to the affected human’s life. In Misa’s case, she was supposed to die the day her stalker approached her. I.E. her lifespan was down to 0 . Jealous purposefully killed her stalker, thereby killing himself, & adding his life to hers. It’s not so much that he was in love ( although, that’s why he did it in) , but it’s a direct result of him purposefully saving a human life.

Light's lifespan is the only lifespan in the series that can be calculated, the rest of the lifespans shown are just random numbers according to the creator.

To clarify (no spoilers), the "old man" the shinigami mention isn't the gold guy on the throne (whose name is Armonia Justin Beyondormason. Yes, really). The old man is the Shinigami King who hasn't appeared on screen.

Yes true, but I've never understood why Rem said 'even if killing L lengthens [Light's] life I will not die.' She said, "he is just another human to me." Why couldn't Jealous kill Misa's murderer just because he felt like it? Like he does any other human? Do all Shinigami have to avoid killing people who themselves are fated to end other peoples lives? Think about it. Would any Shinigami that killed that murderer also die, because they lengthened her life? And if that's so, then killing any person fated to be a murderer is also saving a life, and would also cause their death. But that murder could be far in the future. Like what if another Shinigami killed Misa's murderer but a few days previous to the incident. Without knowing this man was fated to end Misa's life. Would they die then? Such a thing would mean Shinigami are risking their lives whenever they kill a person, because there's a chance that person was fated to end someone's life in the future. Surely that can't be true, Shinigami can kill whoever they wish at any time. That's where, I think, the love element is used to fix this hole. If the Shinigami doesn't intend to lengthen anyone's life, they wont die. And in order to make a Shinigami do that intentionally, they need to love the human.

This episode made me join Patreon, 'cause there was no way I was waiting a week for this one. It'll be my birthday gift to myself. Totally worth it. The scene with Light in the helicopter is my favorite in the series.

Happy birthday! It's my favorite scene, too. In both the manga and the anime. There's no doubt Brad Swalie (Light's English Voice Actor) screamed himself raw for such an epic scene!

I wish the discussions were more focused on the episode's storyline than the trivial lifespan stuff and an inifinite debit card...I was so hyped to see this episode's reaction and I kind of felt disappointed. Still looking forward to the next one

I get the feeling they are really going to start hating Light in the next few episodes or at least Calvin will. He seems to be the one hating Light the most. That face he made when Light made that smug evil smirk spoke volumes lol.
