Who could've suspected that Ymir of all people was an intelligent titan. Like Jack said, she was a side character pushed to the forefront out of nowhere. I love how AoT doesn't just make up random names for extra characters but it actually uses background characters and sometimes reuses them for exactly that, random char. roles. Like on this episode they mention Thomas who was eaten by the former "monkey" titan on ep. 5 and they also used Daz who wanted to abandon the cadet's post on ep. 11. I know these kind of details are easier to spot on a second or third run but try to remember those background characters they mention because even if it isn't important it's kind of cool to identify them when they reappear for another random role or even remembering who they were when they are getting eaten in the background.

I didn't say he died, just that he was mentioned and we know him from before.. and that background characters (not specifically Daz) appear, get mention or are even shown their deaths in the background as well and it's easy to miss those scenes.
