On this month's Animation Damnation, we just may have reached the nadir of filmed animation as we try to discuss the absolutely abysmal television special, Cathy's Valentine

Originally airing back on February 10, 1989, this is, without question, one of the worst things we've ever watched for this show in AD's entire 10-year run! Is Kathy narcoleptic or is there a gas leak in her house? Why does Irving think re-wiring a stereo is a hot Valentine's Day present? Shouldn't Cathy cut ties with these abhorrent parents? And what is with both of these idiots leaving the house in 1989 without cash in hand?

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting We Hate Movies on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for podz and we appreciate you spending some time with us!

Y'all need to think about doing a Pete and Pete "shideshow" at some point. With all the weird pop culture figures, character actors and horror-tinged plots, it would be great fodder.

Mark Ibarra

A classic "Who Was This For?" scenario. The depressing and unsubtle animated exploits of annoying adults with relationship anxieties...paired with Charlie Brown specials. Thank god I had already aged out of accidentally watching this.

Felipe Sobreiro

I'm watching it now and it's terrible but I'm fascinated by the idea of a cartoon aimed at adults that's not heavy on edginess but on depression

Nathan Lemire

We're going to need fucking golf shoes man.

Not the Black Jobs

I liked this stupid cartoon. It’s bizarre but fascinating 😂

I was gonna watch this before listening, but decided I wanted to see a good Valentines cartoon and watched 'I Love Lisa' instead. After listening to the ep, I stand by my decision. Dang. Should've asked for I Love Lisa for listener request month. Oh well. Next year.

Chris Rose

Instagram has tried to recommend Haus of Decline to me multiple times as something I may be interested in and I have never been interested

Tim Evans

The burger King commercial Andrew talks about seems to have Judith Hoag in it as well as Pete and Pete's dad.

Derek Baxter

I wish I still had access to Photoshop. I would throw together an ad for “Eric Szyszka: Age Detective. Coming soon to Qubi”

Darryl Bowen

Irving is going to end up on 20/20 for strangling Cathy to death with stereo wires. Found by police while returning video tapes at blockbuster. I think the dad is also trying to kill the mom. He tells Cathy if her mom finds out about something (Probably about the therapist) it will kill her. There's a few beats and then he yells fir her to tell his wife the news. ("Finally I'll be free") I don't think Cathy says Ack during this at all. Her mom screams ack when she sees the lingerie in the bag....which actually gave me a chuckle during this horror show. Why so anti therapy so weird

My favorite local TV commercial was for a local radio station during a college football game (nebraska vs minnesota) the Omaha radio station was giving away your choice of 1 of these 3 prizes A New Condo A Rolls Royce A 100k This was 83 maybe.

John Edwards

Not gonna lie: I'd totally be down for a VHS Trailer Game bonus ep where it's TV commercial rips instead.

Boomers are spoiled children who never grew up while their oldest children, the Gen X-Ers are miserable teens who never grew up. There is a subtle difference.

Your extended convo about vhs tapes reminds me of one of my most treasured possessions: a vhs tape of a broadcast of wizard of oz my mom made in the 80s. I love those old commercials on there. I really need to get this digitized someday so I can watch it again. That’s literally the only way we watched wizard of oz when I was a kid, and it’s not complete for me without the Noxema, campbell’s soup, coke, or McDonald’s commercials.

Cody Downs

Hey, Gang! If you decide to down some mini-"Pat Sajak Show" 🐇 🕳 on YouTube, you'll come across its most infamous episode: a 1990 guest-hosted episode from notorious Rest-in-Piss bigot, Rush Limbaugh. In fact, it has its own -- Andrew's fave - Wikipedia page on its terrible airing. Happy (belated) Valentine's Day, fellas! 👍

Hard To Gwil

One for Eric Szyszka: Age Detective please

Ajax

A joyless Sex and the City precursor without the TNA

Jason

Too bad this wasn’t a non-Patreon exclusive. Steve had an absolute fucking slam dunk of a pun-name introduction of: “I’m Stephen Saj-AAACK!”

Busiris

I don't always watch the animation damnation selections but I was morbidly curious and good lord it was taxing. To quote It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: "This isn't 'will they or won't they', it's 'I know they won't, and I don't want them to'!"

James Gibson

Mostly listened to the cartoon while working, so only hearing voices, my brain was imagining Cathy dating Raphael.

Lance Flexington

So Irving was definitely at 1/6, was my takeaway from the show.

Tristan

Rob Paulsen Yakko from animaniacs "Hello Cathy". Great Ep. I hope you guys do another one, nothing better than dunking on cathy and Irving.

Catboyslim

While I was putting on my underwear this morning I though “ACCK!” Lol wonderful review of a total sexist shite cartoon perpetrated by a woman for women…..who was a fan of this ?

2024-02-18 02:00:26 Cathy is female Dilbert. No doubt. Somehow, to this day, there is a Cathy-themed ice cream parlor in Orlando. If you guessed that the whole place is shaped like an ice cream carton with a big Cathy swimming in it, you’re right.

Watching this cartoon made my skin crawl. It's an encapsulation of all the horrible messages about gender roles and relationships I heard growing up. Maybe at the time it was relatable, but this constant drumming on about "I'm a woman, therefore I hate my body and eat too much chocolate and overthink everything and fight with my boyfriend" is both reductive and dismissive and terribly depressing. Media in the 80's and 90's loved to boil everything down to "women are like this, and men are like this" and it's just the worst most insulting garbage. This attitude of "this is just how it is, it's normal, this is what all women are like, not just me and my specific friend group but all women everywhere, universally" just sucks and I hate it.

"Chris, print it out" is one of my new favorite bits

Gotta be Eagleman for car insurance. Fun fact : my grade school's mascot was an eagle and I often wore the costume at events - same one from the commercial. Used to terrorize people in the crowd repeating the lines from this. https://youtu.be/O4-e4nlfdRI?si=IBfgAxEeDC62UMaz
