CHAPTER 2

-

"Interesting..."

Ajuka Beelzebub, one of the four Satans, mutters as he looked at the blade that he was holding. The rest of them were in a room nearby, as Ajuka was the most resistant to Holy Powers since he is always exposed to them when experimenting.

In his mind, there were a few questions, so he asked them.

"Ah, how can a Devil wield a Holy weapon? Well..."

He had a hesitant look as he glanced around the room.

"God — "

They both winced at the pain, though the Satan in front of him only had a slight reaction.

" —set the system in Heaven to make Holy weapons harmful to Devils, but because of a... situation, the system is currently being run by the Archangel slash Seraph Michael."

Looking at the blade in his hand, suddenly everything clicked in his head. From him being able to wield Holy weapons, to reincarnated Devils being able to wield Sacred Gears even though they are enemies of the One Above.

God was dead.

He told this to Ajuka who had a neutral expression, as if he had already known it.

"... Yes, he is dead. Has been ever since the Great War. That's why Heaven's system is going haywire to allow this to happen."

He answered, pointing at Balmung to make a point.

... Then who was governing Heaven right now if he had died.

"Michael is doing all he can, but clearly he is not the same being. Imperfections in the system are being displayed, more in the future if my calculations are correct."

Does anyone else other than them know about it? He asked that to Ajuka who replied with a hand on his chin.

"Well, the powerhouses of each faction know about the fact, along with their Peerages. I heard that Serafall wanted to wait until you were older before telling it to you, but oh' well."

So his Master already knew too, that was interesting.

"Now, let's move onto the nitty-gritty, shall we?"

In a flash of green, a clipboard appeared in his hand.

"I've written a few hypotheses that I'd like to test out. First, I've researched about Balmung and Siegfried's history. From what I understand, the sword is supposedly Holy and Demonic, depending on the wielder. I'd like to see if you could convert the Holy energy that's being emitted to Demonic."

With a question, he asked.

"How do you do it? Well, Sacred Gears respond to desires, and you said that it whispered to you, no? Try that."

Nodding, he took a breath before shifting Balmung near his face. Closing his eyes, he whispers it to change to Demonic, imagining it to reek of Demonic Power instead of Holy.

A few seconds went by when suddenly the blade slowly lost its luster, replacing it was a dark and red pulse of energy, Demonic Power, as a miasma that surrounded the blade.

"A success, very nice."

But there was a slight difference. The blade was absorbing his Demonic energy, fast. Like the river of a dam flooding out of a hole. He told that to Ajuka.

"Hmm, that means its base state is when it's emitting Holy energy? But how? No one is supplying it... Oh, I see..."

He started muttering before his eyes landed on the jewel that laid beautifully on the sword's handle.

"It must be absorbing the energy around us and then converting it into Holy energy, very ingenious. The conversion is a mystery though... Unless... Yes, that is sound enough to add into the list."

Taking a pen, he starts to jot down some sentences before asking him to order his sword.

"Sieg, ask your sword whether it converts True Ether to Holy energy. If it can do so, that means that most of my hypotheses are correct then..."

Doing so, he whispers to the sword. A few seconds passed before he gets a whisper back in the back of his mind.

He then told him his findings, who had an amazed face.

"Amazing, a True Ether to Holy Light and Demonic Power converter..."

He asked what True Ether was, since he had never heard of the term before.

"True Ether is what the One Above used for his spells to create this world. It is the purest form of energy that surrounds the world everywhere. We, as supernatural beings and magician humans, naturally convert this energy to whatever energy that suits us.

Holy beings convert True Ether to Holy Light, while Devils convert True Ether to Demonic Power, etc. The problem with this natural conversion of us is the lack of control. In theory, every being coverts only 1/10th of the energy, meaning we have an energy conversion loss of 90%.

Powerful beings like Super Devils or Archangels can reduce the amount of deficit by 15% give or take. If my math here is correct, your Balmung has a conversion rate of about 50%, causing it to be able to maintain its Holy energy forever.

As for True Ether as a source, it is 10 times as potent as Demonic or Holy energy. One simple powered fireball spell with True Ether by a low leveled individual theoretically would be equivalent to a fireball spell of a High-Class Devil."

The man had the look of a greedy person as he eyed his Balmung, causing Sieg to move his Sacred Gear closer to his body.

"And now..."

This time, he sprouted an excited grin on his face.

"It's time to see how much damage we can cause."

They were now inside the Astorath household, in the grounds of Ajuka's testing range where everything in the vicinity, from mountains to rivers, were all his.

After relaying his observations and successful hypothesis to the remaining Satans, they were standing near the observer section as he stood still nearby.

He had found that Balmung could go into charge mode, with it not emitting any type of energy and instead store the energy into its jewel for storage. He immediately did so, and thus the sword lost its light and its blade reverted back to silver-ish gray.

With a shine of green, a target appeared in front of him.

"Alright, Sieg. Test out the sword."

Ajuka said as he briefly heard his Master cheering him on.

Unsheathing the sword, he tested its weight to get used to it before walking towards the target. He raised the sword upraised before swinging down, feeling the target give way like cutting melted butter.

The blade was too sharp.

The cut was so clean that even he was impressed by the sharpness.

"So it is sharp enough to cleanly slice obsidian even with his level of swordsmanship? That's horrifying, to say the least."

The leader of the Devils, Satan himself, Sirzech Lucifer mutters into the comms.

He had met Sirzech a few weeks after reincarnating as a Devil. He was quite adamant on meeting the Devil himself, but after watching him coo his little baby sister, he realized that Devils loved their kind a little too much.

"Go, Sieg, go!"

His Master started chanting before Ajuka took control of the comms.

"Alright, we've tested the sharpness of the blade. And your crude swordsmanship tested its self-alignment well too, no offense. Now's left is the ability of Balmung."

He could hear a "Hey!" from his Master at the offensive wording as the Maou continued.

"From my analysis, it should be some sort of discharge skill with the jewel, ask your Sacred Gear about it."

Nodding, he asked the question. It answered with a whisper.

Gripping the sword, Sieg muttered.

"O' Sword, let thee be filled."

In an instant, the sword started to glow white as power surged from the blade, sending a few pulses of visible energy outwards from the blade. He could feel his Demonic energy being drained from him at a rapid rate, but he continued.

As instructed of the blade, he twists the lower handle of the blade, causing a burst of white light to erupt from the blade, white particles spiraling around the sword, forming a pillar of True Ether.

Running out of Demonic energy to fuel the sword, the jewel started to supply the sword with its own collected energy, causing the glow to brighten.

Instinctively, his left leg steps forward to support his frame as he raised his sword skyward, words whispering into his mind. He repeats them.

"The Evil Dragon Shall Be Vanquished."

As he started to chant, the glow of the white pillar started to illuminate brighter, power level increasing causing him to shiver at the amount. He was about to continue its chant when Balmung whispered to him, telling him that this was his current limit. Go more, and he would die.

So, he ended the chant with the activation chant.

"Bring It Down — "

The pillar of True Ether bursts vigorously, turning into the shape of a ferocious fire as he positioned the blade to his shoulder. Straining at the tiredness of losing his energy so quick, he called its true name with a yell before swinging.

"BALMUNG!"

The pillar of light fell, and the world shined in twilight.

BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMM!!!

True Ether shot out from the blade in a cone shape, causing the surroundings to disintegrate in front of him into nothingness. The light eventually faded, leaving a cone-shaped crater 30 meters in radius, with him as the center of the segment.

He fell to the ground with a thud on his back, his sword stabbing itself into the ground cleanly as his Master quickly went to his side.

"Sieg!"

That was all he could hear before he faints from over expending his reserves, the whispers in the back of his head sounding in delight.

A year after unlocking his Sacred Gear, he finally had a different goal other than serving his Master, becoming a High-Class Devil. The reason being was because of politics.

From what he gathered, ever since the Great War and after the instance of Evil Pieces being publicized, his Master had never formed a Peerage at all. This caused a very large controversy in the underworld, and since it had been over 200 years since the War, the issue grew so dangerously big that it threatened her standing as a Maou.

Rumors started spreading, that she does not condone the Peerage system and reincarnated Devils as a whole, causing an uproar amongst the Devils.

A few years before his reincarnation, the other Maous had requested for her to at least get a Peerage member to satisfy the public, but she declined, causing the uproar to intensity, thinking that she was in agreement with the Old Satan faction who believe that all Devils should be pure-blooded.

But when he was unconscious after the reincarnation process, his Master decided to, in the middle of an announcement by Sirzech to the whole world, reveal that she had gotten a Peerage member nonchalantly before leaving to meet him in the hospital.

That was so like his Master, to reveal such an important thing like it was a normal Tuesday.

The whole Devil community went in shock at the news, his Master had just silenced the haters and rumors, but another problem emerged.

Sieg's Devil status.

He was a reincarnated Devil, meaning he starts off as a normal Low-Class Devil. The issue was that his Master was the Maou Leviathan, a Super-Class Devil. Before his reincarnation, every other piece of a Maou's status were High-Class, no matter the race.

But he was a no-named person before the reincarnation. So, the problem shows itself. If they ranked him low, then it would be like a face slap to the Leviathan, but if he was placed him high, then it wouldn't be fair because of favoritism.

Then, his Master gave a suggestion. Take the High-Class Devil promotion exam.

And so, he trained. For the past year, he had been training night and day, 24/7 to learn and enhance his fighting style as much as he could from the Peerage members of each Maou, who willingly provided their support to him.

He trained with Okita Souji and Beowulf from Sirzech's Peerage, Boudica from his Master's mother's Peerage, advice from Ajuka, and even trained in combat against a Devil-Dragon hybrid called Tannin for a few months.

Teleporting to the location of the exam, he noticed that there were quite the number of people in the venue with magic circles which he identified as observation spells.

It seems that these people were reporters, his Master told him to not be surprised since she was the leading powers of the community, but he didn't expect so many of them.

After taking a parchment from the receptionist, he took a look at it before nodding, thanking the kind lady.

The exam will have two parts, a written test and a practical test.

The Written Test will be about the history of the Devils, the inventions, powers, general knowledge, strategy theories, Peerage building, and theoretical combat applications.

The Practical Test will be sparring against a High-Class Devil. There isn't much of a requirement, as long as the instructor deems him worthy, he will pass.

He waits until his name was called, and was instructed to tear his parchment to teleport to the location for his Written Test. Doing so, he watched as a red magic circle appear beneath his feet, and then the world flashed blood-red.
