yes keith, padding out the game in the style of disgaea, and most jrpg's is a dominant style of japanese rpg's. That is why they are called jrpg's rather than western rpgs. It is part of the cultural structure over there allthough I will openly admit that final fantasy 15 and masseffect andromeda is stacked piles of garbage.

Oh and here I was thinking that the "J" was for japan. I guess much like captain Americas "A" actually standing for France the "J" actually stands for padding. If this was to snarky for anyone im making the point that "elephants are gray things but not all gray things are elephants"

Sorry in advance for the longer post but I wanted to cover the topic in more detail. well western rpgs formula's got reinvented several times but formulated into something similar to witcher, deus x, vampyr, dishonoured, thief etc. This is usually done in a first person/over the shoulder kind of gameplay in a 3D world. Assasin creed like open world maps with location markers and missions/tasks isn't uncommon. Further back top down rpgs in the style of baldurs gate, icewind dale etc were king ( normally dungeons and dragons based ). Newer titles in this style is Pillars of eternity, tyranny, wasteland 2, Pathfinder kingmaker etc the list goes on ( usually AA or indie developed these days ) Jrpg traditions hail as far back as final fantasy, chrono trigger/cross, final fantasy tactics, legend of mana etc. They tend to include more extensive leveling systems, freerom exploration and secrets as well as special weapon/armours. These are usually found in dungeons ( some hidden ) which you must solve alternativly fight your way through. Hidden extra bosses that guard/drop special loot is also common and they tend to be harder than the average main story bosses. The weapons bosses from final fantasy 7 comes to mind. Packaged into this "side content" are other challanges such as breeding a golden chocobo to get the knights of the round super summon materia ( again ff7 ). Biggest diffrence between more modern western rpgs and japanese styled ones is that western ones tend to be afraid of you missing content while the jrpg ones is perfectly fine with keeping that hidden as an easter egg. mmo's developed for the asian market also tends to be grindy with a spice of real money stores containing game items. The reason for this....they don't despice pay to win as a culture in asia! Combine time aspects with the secrets and semi open exploration and you get the frame for most jrpgs regardless of setting. It is an entirely diffrent school of making rpg games, much in the same sence rpg maker games tend to have an unique feel and astetic to them.

This is mostly correct. With 2 points being off. number one is that its kinda irrelevant to the point I was making its good info but more of a parallel topic. Second is that I cant really think of many jrpgs that iv played after the time of ff12 or so that had much of hidden or side content. optional yea definitely but most all of its is on an in game check list or straight told to you or 2 steps of the main path. I am talking about main stream jrpgs as that's the kind of content you were also using point is that if the games had stayed like that than yea that would be a vary good argument. Im not saying ignore the past The games you pointed to are classics for good reason. But that is not really how its done anymore. As for the pay to win thing not being a big deal in asian markets you are completely on the mark there. I have heard it described as "accomplishment substitution" in general if you don't have time or skill than money means you are putting your time and skill there and its is equal.
