The fact that Nell was haunted by her own death her whole life is terrifying and so well done. Her fate was fixed the moment she sat foot at Hill House.Love this episode

One of THE best scenes in TV/movie history. When you realize that Nell is the Bent-Neck-Lady and it was adult Nell who was haunting her younger self. Incredible. This show is a masterpiece. And more is coming. What an incredible story. So well told. And Spartan, don't forget what Rust told you in True Detective. "Time is a flat circle"

Bree

I always have viewed Nell's storyline as a circle or a cycle where she is forever destined to become the bent neck lady. Baby Nell will always go through life haunted by herself, ultimately always turning into the bent neck lady for the cycle to repeat. Its so hauntingly devastating.

This has probably been my favorite series reaction. Love how into it both of you guys are. The writing, characters, and acting really pull you in. The show is an absolute master class in writing from beging to end. I’m sure you’ve been told but Midnight Mass is by the same writer and it’s incredible too. Haunting of Bly Manor is good but Midnight Mass is incredible.

I get sleep paralysis. It’s not like what they showed Nell in bed with her husband. I’m not sure if they played it up for dramatic effect or if some people really get it that badly.

Kate

Ever seen the documentary The Nightmare (2015)? Deeply disturbing, and it left me with terrified of the possibility of experiencing sleep paralysis. 😅 Utterly horrific how some people say they experience it. Glad to hear it's not that bad for everyone.

Alvin Tsao

In my 20's I had sleep paralysis 4-5 times, most were minor but I thought someone was in my kitchen with a knife once and the other time I thought a dark spirit was flying underneath my bed! The worst is being awake/asleep at the same time. You know you're awake but you are still hallucinating/dreaming and your limbs are locked. I don't get them nowadays, the last few were more mild as I would realize it was a dream and I would just calmly count and wait until I could unlock my hands.

Franky E

I moreso mean how she had her eyes open but couldn’t move properly, and her husband could see her twitching etc like she was having a mini seizure, shaking her hand and stuff. I’m fairly certain your body can’t actually move when you’re experiencing sleep paralysis. Basically your mind is awake but your body is still asleep. The most recent time I had it was a few weeks ago where I was busting to go the toilet in the morning. I knew I had to, like I was conscious and awake, but my body wouldn’t move. I kept on imagining myself slapping my own face to wake myself up

Franky E

I’ve never had any truly “scary” experiences with sleep paralysis. I’ve had a couple where I thought someone was in the room or in the corner. But I’ve never hallucinated per se, it’s usually just a “presence” or a feeling that someone’s watching me and I need to wake up and say hi to them lol

You guys are all over the place but right on the mark at the same time. When it all finally comes together you’re going to be bringing your theories together but also kicking yourself for missed details and misinterpretation. But art is subjective and while the true intent of some scenes may be lost on you guys now, your theories are really interesting. Everything won’t make sense until you get the mother and father’s pov. Everything seems out of place because what was happening to the mom is important to what’s happening to all the kids especially Nell and Luke. I would say dwell on the themes of time, and how time is effected after death. Looking into the future and how the future reflects the past are also huge themes to think about. Lastly while the hills story is important, every ghost in the house is not a reflection of the family. The house itself is a time paradox. I know everything I said is vague and doesn’t make sense. I wanted to add to the thoughts you’ve shared and give you more to consider by the next episode hopefully without spoiling anything. I left out important details and conversations so hopefully you continue to come to your own conclusions. This is a show close to my heart, I’ve written an analysis of this show in college and with each watch you gain deeper understanding of the themes. This is a show that keeps on giving so I would definitely suggest a rewatch later on. And of course you should try flannigan’s other series on Netflix they truly don’t miss and always provoke deep thoughts. I would definitely suggest the haunting of bly manor next. A different story with a great payoff. I can’t wait until you finish so I can further share my own takeaways from the series.

I know you guys said horror isn’t going to be a common genre for you guys to cover but this is my niche for sure. I think if you find the time you should definitely check out SLASHER. First 3 seasons are on Netflix and the last few are on shudder. I like horror but slashers and stuff like hill house interest me the most. It is centered around gruesome murders but every season is a different story and characters. There is always a masked killer with unknown intentions. In a similar way to hill house every episode takes a different perspective to the overall story. It all comes together at the end playing between past and present. The seasons I enjoyed most were 1,3,4. 2 was great too it just isn’t my favorite and I haven’t seen season 5 but if you want a true horror that makes you cringe but great story hopefully you consider this.

The Emotional Damage this episode caused can be....well Red Wedding levels...just Pure Existential Dread and Hopelessness. Particularly because once the shock passed through me, my first thought that this is now Nellie's reality forever. That's just how she exists now. Eternally falling. And it bummed me out something fierce

Madalyn Parker

I’ve been dealing with sleep paralysis since I was 7-8 years old. It used to be weekly, then monthly, now it’s pretty rare. From 21-25 I think it’s been a handful of times. But man, it is terrifying. The “sleep paralysis demon” is a thing. Mine has always been the bathtub lady from the shining (walked in on that scene at a very young age). It can feel so suffocating and feel so real. But once you come to it they disappear. There’s nothing you can do to get rid of it for good but you learn techniques to get out of it/make it subside. This show did an amazing job at showing us what it can feel like.

This and the next episode are my favourite ever! Thanks for the great reaction, cannot wait for the next one!

spartanandpudgey

oh wow that's really interesting, did not know it effected people in that way, Pudgey probably was aware but I wasn't. sounds like they explored it very well in this show then - Spartan

spartanandpudgey

wow that's wild, very interesting to hear of people's different experiences and compare that to how the show explores it

Steven

God tier reaction from Pudgey on the reveal. "IT'S HURRRRRRRRRRHH!!!!!" i'm dead

Fuzzy Dunlop

Spartan and Fuzzy are twins. The twin sense is real. I get a strong feeling every single time Spartan is going to be wrong about something. I haven't slept in 6 months.

Ripo

I suffered from those too, started at 17 or 18, and went on untill I was like 23. I saw weird stuff when that happened. Really weird and terrifying.

Lizabee

I think the family aspect really makes the ‘horror’ part of the show much easier to stomach. The family and their relationships with eachother are so real and tragic

Easy Breezy Bri

I love this series so so much. The writing just comes together so well. It’s just so perfect. I’d recommend reacting to the rest of Mike Flanagan’s series - Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and Fall of the House of Usher. All of them are great in their own way, and he uses a lot of the same actors so there will be some familiar faces.

Tiffany

As soon as I saw this episode was available on Patreon I signed back up - I still remember my reaction to this crazy reveal! And it only gets better from here! (The night we watched this my husband was on call and he works on natural gas stations in the middle of no where, no lights at all, and was called out right after this and when he got home much later that night he told me he saw the bent neck lady everywhere 😂😂😂)

Steph

Sleep paralysis is terrifying. I used to get it a lot when I was younger. It’s like being stuck in limbo, with your brain being conscious but your whole body still being asleep and not being able to wake it up or control it. A true waking nightmare. I could completely relate to poor Nell.

Kodi

Fighting so hard to not jump through the screen and tell yall to stop analyzing it so hard and go with it JUST ENJOY THE RIDE ALL WILL BE EXPLAINED 🤣🤣🤣
