I changed the order up a bit and decided to look at Trinitron now rather than later.  I'm still working on captions and that other fun stuff (including the description, no patrons are listed yet), so expect the video to change a little bit over time.  I hope you enjoy this, the last video of 2017!

Trinitron: Sony's Once Unbeatable Product

You can support this channel on Patreon! Link below Throughout much of the analog television era, Sony was the fairly undisputed king of TVs. Their Trinitron picture tube was a universally well received technology and made a number of important improvements on the standard color picture tube. This is the story of its creation. **The trinitron CRT wasn't impervious to Moire patterns. However, it was less prone to them because of the lack of a phosphor grid. Vertical misalignment could still occur with the aperture grille, so moire patterns could still appear on patterns with strong vertical stripes. However, moire patterns wouldn't appear with horizontal image components due to the lack of distinct phosphor groupings. **The patent expired in 1996, not 1998.

Happy New Year! Thanks for all the interesting videos and hard work throughout the year. Nice Ghostbusters reference :)

Fascinating, thanks!

Love this video. Reminds me of when my grandparents bought a Sony Triniton to replace their aging Zenith TV after it got hit by lightning through the cable line. First TV I saw with a remote control, and the picture was much better than the Zenith we had at home. Now, that TV is at mom's house and I believe it still works haha

I have a friend who has over 100 patents related to Trinitron, you may want to check him out in your patent searches - his name is Yasuhito Maeshima - strangely enough, he is also a co-developer (with me) of improved engine computer (ECU) for many older Lexus, Toyota and other Japanese cars, e.g. Lexus SC400 & LS400, Toyota Supra twin turbo, Nissan GT-R, Acura NSX.

Another strange moment in time is right now, where LG OLED has smoked all of the other TV manufacturers with a patented design and established a big lead in picture quality like Sony had for so long.
