Heya, fellow Anki add-on aficionados!

Spell checking support for Anki is finally here, and it's ready for you to test it out!

Attached below you will find the first beta release of the Spell Checker add-on. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now, so it should be very stable.

Requirements

Please note that Spell Checker only works on standard builds of Anki 2.1.10 and up. Earlier releases and alternate builds are not supported due to the fact that they don't pack the required under-the-hood changes for spell checking to work.

Installation

This release marks the first time I will be using the convenient new .ankiaddon packaging format that I was able to implement in Anki thanks to your support. Because of that, the installation process could not be easier. Simply drag and drop the .ankiaddon file onto your add-ons list, restart Anki, and you're done!:

Usage

The use of the add-on should be fairly self-explanatory, but here are some hints to get you started:

  • Because Anki is used by such a variety of different users across the world, the add-on does not ship with a default dictionary. Rather, you will be able to download the languages you want to use in Anki's preferences screen under the new Spelling tab
  • Once you've downloaded your languages, simply head to Anki's note editor, right-click and select enable spell-checking. Then right-click again and toggle on all the languages you want to use
  • With spell-checking active, and your languages selected, Anki should now start to spell-check text as you type it. Incorrect spellings will be marked with squiggly lines underneath; and just like in your web browser or office app, you can simply right click on a misspelled word to get a list of suggestions to choose from
  • To  quickly toggle spell-checking on or off you can use the convenience hotkey F6

Make sure to also check out the last Spell Checker progress update for a video showcasing all of this.

Known bugs

  • You might have to restart Anki once for the changes to apply after downloading your first dictionaries.
  • There are some minor window focus issues when using the right-click context menu option "Download languages". These are caused by a bug in Anki's progress bar window.

Advanced dictionaries (Medical spell-checking, etc.)

I'm still looking into providing a Patreon-exclusive set of advanced dictionaries for special terms and other uses. More updates on that will follow towards the end of the month, so stay tuned!

---------------

Alright, I think that should cover everything for now. Hope you guys will enjoy this exclusive release. Spell checking has been one of Anki's most sought-after features ever since its inception, and thanks to you it is now a reality!

Very much looking forward to you guys' feedback!

Thanks again
