I'm forever torn about simplicity/complexity in my comics. For the hiker comic I know I could do just a simple 1 color comic, and maybe that's what I'll start with and add colors as I get further along, but I'd like to try something new with texture on this one.

I've been making these textures in Photoshop that might be the kinda look you'd get if you were making rubbings on top of textured plates or something. I like the sort of noisy and foresty detail it gives, and the hatching can easily eel like a bed of pine needles which I hope will come in handy on this one ;)

Still need to make a finalized design for the Dryad but I'm kinda liking this one. What do you think about mythical forest creatures having fashioned choker necklaces  and acorn cap berets for themselves? 😂

It took a long time of fussing to arrive at this still very rough page, but I know how useful that process was for Little Bird's Bath so I'll be using it again here. I think my aesthetic keys for this one will be a very very warm, limited palette, that can bridge the gap between late summer and fall colors, printed media texture, and very modernist cartoon type nature aesthetics, think Eyvind Earle trees and the like!

More updates soon, thanks all for your support and patience! I'll get a finalized dryad design (or two, if I can't decide) so we can get a vote going first thing this week.

I'm sure we'll all be more than happy enough with whatever direction you take us

The dryads probably should be more elven/greek.

Haha, I guess that's just my hand showing-- just some kinda North American dryad's gonna come out when I put pen to paper. ;)

I really like what you're doing here.

I love the 'modern dryad' notions! Doesn't feel anachronistic with the joggers that way.

That's a good point! I feel like the designs just need to match the aesthetic, and since much of my work is kinda retro anyways, some conceits make sense. If I get around to a Gibson girl comic for example, I'll care a lot more about period accuracy because it will make things feel more aligned. 👍

this level of detail feels right
