Incredible start to this series! Stakes are high, my friends...in fact I don't think they get any higher!

This was the show I would run home from school for. If I was quick, I could get home just after the intro commercials. Star Blazers was unlike other cartoons -- the story progressed and you didn't want to miss an episode. Things got destroyed and had to be fixed. Characters could die. It wasn't a cartoon for babies.

I'm so thrilled that you chose 2199. The original is amazing too, but 2199 is next level. Also, there's a live action movie with outstanding visual effects.

Oh man, you didn't get to hear the greatest theme song in the history of television yet. Maybe not until episode 3? Anyway, it's incredible. Okay so forgive me if you already know all of this, but: You're watching a 2012 modern remake of Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato. The original predates Star Wars (1975) and is notable for being an OG Space Opera. The Dub that many of us watched as kids came out just after Star Wars (1979) to capitalize on its popularity and Americanized several of its elements, including renaming the Yamato to the Argo. This modern remake is much like the modern remake of Battlestar Galactica. The story is matured a little, the sexism is toned down, the effects are updated, the tone is darker, etc. But with Star Blazers 2199 the story is generally still the same as the original Star Blazers. My favourite thing about the remake is that updated sound effects. The pre-star wars sound effects of the original sound a little odd to me. In IRL history, the Yamato was the largest battleship ever built, and was built by the imperial Japanese navy in world War II and was this epic accomplishment in shipbuilding, before being sunk almost immediately. The Zero were the Japanese fighters that dominated the skies in the early parts of the Pacific theatre in World War II. In 1975, releasing a show like this that glorified Imperial Japanese things like the Yamato and Zero was still a bit controversial. Shows like Macross were hugely influenced by Space Battleship Yamato, and many people think that it was an influence for George Lucas too, though he's never said so. Thanks for this fantastic reaction!

Yep, you can't believe how much I was looking forward to seeing this remake, knowing the original series and seeing some previews of the new animation of 2199, this show couldn't be released soon enough. Greg - I know you don't like watching Next Episode Previews at the end of shows like this to avoid any spoilers, but I just wanted to point out each Preview ends with a note of how many days Earth has left before all life goes extinct. As if the stakes isn't high enough, but the audience is reminded that time is definitely running out. Also here is a condensed list of the primary characters introduced in this episode. Hope it helps with the lack of people calling others out by rank rather then name. Admiral Juzo Okita - The bearded admiral who commanded the Kirishima and led Operation M at the beginning of this episode. Admiral Ryu Hijikata - fellow admiral and friend to Juzo Okita. Also the owner of some very impressive sideburns. Lt. Susumu Kodai - Younger brother of Mamoru Kodai/Captain of the UN Destroyer Yukikaze) Lt. Daisuke Shima - Friend to Susumu Kodai Lt. Yuki Mori - blond haired operations officer of the UN Space Forces. Noted by Susumu and Daisuke as looking like the alien pilot who crashed and died on Mars. Dr. Sakezo Sado - Chief Medical Officer and connoisseur of fine sake! Nurse Makoto Harada - Dr. Sado's chief nurse Major Shiro Sanada - Briefly shown in this episode with Ryu Hijikata inspecting the alien capsule at timemark 00:19:10 on Episode 1. He is an officer in the science and technology division. Lt Cmd Hikozaemon Tokugawa - Engineering chief of the Kirishima Lt. Saburo Kato - Fighter commanding officer and noted ace pilot.

Starblazers was created by the manga writer/artist Leiji Matsumoto, who also created Galaxy Express 999 and Captain Harlock. Starblazers takes place in the 'Leijiverse' as noted by its title in the year 2199 (22th-23rd century at this story's end) and depicts the recovery and later the raise of Human influence in the galaxy with the establishment of a Federation. Later in the 30th Century, the stories of Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 takes place. At this time, the Federation has become overly complacent and run by corrupt politicians and a do nothing President. Captain Harlock is a space pirate who's primary decree with his crew is that they value freedom above all else and will fight to protect their freedom and to oppose the tyranny of the Federation who views Captain Harlock and his crew as outlaws and traitors to Humanity. Captain Harlock, previously a starship captain for the Federation goes rogue when he realizes how corrupt the Federation is. Despite that, he still honors his oath to protect humanity from enemies who would do it harm whether they be from external or domestic. Every member of the crew of Harlock's ship The Arcadia is completely loyal to their captain. Though many times depicted as drunken reprobates, when needed they don't ever seem hesitant to lay their lives on the line for the ship, the captain and fellow crewman.

The response by Admiral Okita to the Gamilon's demand to surrender was a reference to an event that took place during WWII, December 22, 1944. Americans soldiers of F Company defending Bostogne were approached by the German 47th Panzer Corp and sent a formal demand to surrender. Since the German Commander had made his demand formally, he requested a formal response from the Americans. The demand was forwarded to Brig. Gen. Anthony C. McAulliffe, who responded to the German's lengthy demand simply with "Nuts!".

Oh, this should be interesting. Yamato 2199 is an absolute peak amidst all the dross the anime industry pumps out every year. Very much looking forward to seeing your future reactions.

I cannot thank you enough for this, my friend! I've referred back to it so much, I just went ahead and loaded it into my show notes :)
