Late to the party once more, but this is one of my favourite parts early in the series~ I love Zoro what can I say? Fun Fact of The Post!~: 1.) Funny you speak about Luffy's views on death because Luffy purposefully tries not to kill his opponent because he believes in 'killing' one's dreams instead. If you stop their motivation they may change. (Note: Luffy is the only one who carries that sentiment in the crew and Zoro is confirmed to have a body count from back in his Bounty Hunter days lol)

Whether the One Piece is real or not I'm not saying. While we still don't know WHAT it is, your question of whether it's real or not will be answered. However, Rogers's execution will continue to be one of the greatest moments in One Piece and the more you learn about the world and its history the better this scene becomes

Smoker is a great character. He's also the prime example after guys like Axehand Morgan, Fullbody, and Nezumi (guy that Arlong brided) that not all Marines are shitbags

I love Smoker's introduction, we've spent all story so far being shown that Marines are all corrupt assholes, spineless sycophants to said assholes, or pompous twits. Then we get this guy ontroduced being all super buff and macho and grumpy and get set up for a perfect 'time to show what an ass this marine is!' only to learn.... no... he... he really is a good, decent guy out to protect civilians from pirates.

Well, to be fair, every time we saw the marines, we saw both good and bad. Oda carefully balanced them to not be exclusively either of them. Think about it: the first ever mention of the marines is by Koby, who is an idealist. Then we have Morgan, who is a power-hungry despot, but his subordinates are honorable people who thanked and let Luffy go for example. Fullbody is just narcissistic, but he actually does his job of fighting pirates (he caught Gin, for example). Nezumi is the corrupt marine working with Arlong, but in the same arc we also saw Pudding, who was that commodore that came answering the help requests of the people of Gosa and ultimately was defeated by the Arlong pirates. So I'd say that the marines were always multi-faceted.

I often rewatch people react to Smoker's introduction over and over since it is such a subversion of expectations. He's hard his subordinates, harder on pirates, but is genuinely a really good guy trying to do the right thing.

Fun fact about this episode the owner of the sword shop name is Ipponmatsu back in the day he used to sell swords to pirates who went into the grandline but since Smoker became the one in charge of the town he barely has any costumers
