Good morning! Or afternoon! Or evening! I don't know when you're reading this. But I do know that I have another Game Boy Works episode for you. This one kinda kicked my butt—Gremlins 2 is really hard, it turns out. Really hard. Unreasonably so. So, you know, perfect for kids.

The baseball simulator is pretty weird, at least. I like weird when it comes to Game Boy, so that all works out.

Gremlins 2 & Pocket Stadium retrospective: The Gizmo grinder | Game Boy Works 127

Sunsoft returns to Game Boy with a soul-crushingly brutal take on a movie that's about as close to being a cult classic as a major blockbuster can be: Gremlins 2 - The New Batch. It really captures the experience of being a small, helpless little fuzzy guy with stubby arms making his way through a skyscraper filled with raving murder-monsters. Although you'd think with Gizmo's gigantic eyes, he'd have better vision than the original Game Boy screen provides. On the import tip, there's Pocket Stadium from Atlus, a curious baseball simulator... and by "simulator" I really do mean that it's a simulator. No timing or dexterity required! Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more! Books coming soon. Production notes: • Game Boy footage captured from original carts on a Super Game Boy 2 and @Analogue Super Nt. • Live footage captured through same process, but with a Game Boy Camera. • Footage output as RGB via @Analogue DAC and upscaled via @Retro Tink 5X (hence the visual glitching and artifacts that shows up in some footage).

If you're going to keep doing the GBCamera stuff (and I do like the idea) I'd rather the audio not be fed through a cassette recorder and just given straight from the digital source.

Yeah, I'm still fine-tuning the audio there. Direct audio sounds as bad as this style does. My goal is to make it sound like it was recorded through a tiny condenser mic from across the room, but that's a challenge with the filters I have available (sadly, I don't have any tiny condenser mics).

Not sure if you're familiar with the Strat-o-matic baseball board games, but that seems to be what Pocket Stadium is going for. I bet a real RPG-style sports game could have worked well on the Gameboy.

Benjamin Wilder

It's probably a more honest representation of how batting actually works at the major league level outside of the small handful of human beings who have the hand eye coordination and reaction time to be able to read the pitch as it comes off the pitcher's hand. Not that this would actually be fun to play.
