You already know these games under their American titles: Track & Field, Kung-Fu, and, uh, Wrecking Crew. I have to admit I went into this episode with deep concern that I was about to put together a repetitive restatement of previously published information of no real value to anyone—and yet, here we are, with an episode that (I think?) actually stands completely apart from these games' respective NES Works videos and helps to recontextualize them in an interesting way!

Well, I thought it was interesting, anyway.

Wrecking Crew / Hyper Olympic / Spartan-X retrospective: Smash, mash, bash | NES Works Gaiden #033

Although the three games featured in this week's episode have already appeared in the vanilla iteration of NES Works, I promise that there's merit in revisiting them. All three titles—Nintendo's Wrecking Crew, Konami's Hyper Olympic, and Nintendo (not Irem's!) Spartan-X—hit differently on Famicom than they did on NES. Especially when one of the games came with its own controller designed expressly for the purpose of mindless hitting. Production notes: SG-1000 footage captured from a combination of Sega SG-1000 II with (with Card Catcher) and @Analogue Mega Sg with card adapter module and DAC. Vintage hardware mods courtesy of @iFixRetro. NES/Famicom footage captured from @Analogue Nt Mini Noir. Video upscaled to 720 with @Retro Tink 5X. Video Works is funded via Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/gamespite) — support the show and get access to every episode up to two weeks in advance of its YouTube debut! Plus, exclusive podcasts, eBooks, and more!

As a teenager I began to get jaded by the N64's releases, and Wrecking Crew was always special to me cos it was the first time I bought a used NES game with collecting in mind. It was my retro "gateway drug" or whatever. Maybe that sounds goofy, but at the very least, there's a certain line you cross when you go from "kid whose parents buy you new/sealed/complete games on release" to "teen buying used, loose cartridges with your own money".

Hey to be fair to the hypershot controller, it also works with 2 games just like ROB does. hyper Olympic AND hyper sports. (Doesn't work with track and field 2 though)
