The whale tail was so popular then that (*sigh*) yes, middle school girls were wearing them. Did some of the moms buy them for the girls? Perhaps some did, but more often girls would just buy them with chore/allowance money at the mall, which was a really common place to meet up and hang out (sans parents) before you had a license. It seems so dated now, but think about MTV in the late 90s / early 00s: thongs everywhere. There was literally a song about them! ...which came out when I was in middle school, so yes, the message I got was definitely, "Want to be sexy? Wear a thong." I desperately wanted to popular at that age, and the girls who were popular were the girls who looked like women, so of course I wanted one. It felt like a shortcut to being grown up and (because it was "sexy") just a little transgressive. That attitude changed once I actually tried one on. Wear what you like, of course, but to this day I don't understand what's appealing about a permanent wedgie...

In many ways, this show will be an education for you in terms of what pre/teen girlhood can be like. A deeply uncomfortable, unsettling education.
