Thank you guys for talking through your thoughts on Nate’s villain arc! It helped me see things. The first time I watched this I was pretty annoyed by it — not just at him as a character, but at the writers. When the season starts there’s an immediate change in Nate from last season. It FELT like they took a lovable, insecure character and just suddenly stripped his lovable side away so that they could focus on his insecurities and build him up to some sort of . . . maybe not a full-on series villain, at that point, but at least some sort of douchebag arc. It felt very abrupt — from last season I knew Nate had massive insecurities, but there does feel like there was a jump in his psyche from the S1 finale and S2 opener. This made me feel like his whole villain arc was unearned, if that makes sense. I still feel that a bit, and I do think they made that transition in a very overt way. BUT — you guys have turned me around on the resulting dynamic. I really like it now! I like that in a show about positivity, compassion, and mental health, that Nate’s insecurities and unwillingness to deal with them have driven him away from the people who are most capable of helping him and giving him the best outlook on life, and right into the hands of people who can let him be the worst version of himself. I really hope there’s some sort of redemption for him in S3. I don’t believe this show will let this be his final iteration. Rupert, maybe — I can only hope that maybe he’ll be the irredeemable foil to Nate. (If so, I hope Becks leaves him. I like that she’s never been portrayed as a jerk.)

Nate is wrong, he is wrong and we all agree on that. But I cannot stop to admire how many reasons he had in his mind about this change of attitude, and all of them were right in his own point of view: Ted and Nate DO NOT share a single one-on-one scene since he asked Nate to give the speech to the team last season, the first one was the breaking point in this episode. Nate did actually stop having one-on-one interactions with Ted in the show and it is incredible how you do not notice it, but he's the ONLY coach who has none. Beard obviously had many, Roy had many. Nate had none. Ted was the father figure he merely rely on since his own dad dismiss him every time and he stopped having moments with him. He doesn't know how to act, he doesn't know who to ask for help. He has a lot more power as a coach but never having any before makes him not ready to use it well. He's not balanced, he's not right. He does too much or not enough. And like you guys said, he has no personality since he became coach: he tries to be a Ted, tries to be a Beard, tries to be even a Roy but it does not work Nate despise himself and you can see it in the way he spits to feel better: it is a toxic trait when he shoves his feelings in the dark of his outfit and bring out the bitterness of having to face life being bullied, losing everyone you relied on and feeling like a fourth wheel It is INCREDIBLE

Yeah, I don't think there's any way Nate won't be set on a redemption path (he probably won't complete it, as the season is so short and Nate has such a ways to go, but he'll be pointed in that direction I'm sure). That's the kind of show this is, plus we've seen the goodness Nate has in him, unlike Rupert or Jamie's dad who we've seen absolutely no redeeming qualities from. That said, of course he's going to have to have a big reality check before that happens that makes him do some self-reflection. Shortly after the finale, Nick Mohammed tweeted a list of the things that led to Nate ending up where he did that shows how brilliantly the arc was done. At the time, his heel-turn seemed (to most people) to be abrupt, but when seeing it all laid out, the trail was there all along. https://twitter.com/nickmohammed/status/1446498835686064135

I would like to think that if Jamie Tartt is redeemable then so is Nate Shelley. Nate is deep in the rabbit hole and he has some amazing talents regarding football coaching but he himself is absolutely miserable and literally "looking for love in all the wrong places!" Looking forward to watching S3 with you as it will be a revelation for all of us now!

This show has always surprised us, never went for easy choices. It's no secret that Nate's arc is based on Anakin Skywalker (and check out at Rupert's Palpatine-esque office in S3E1!), but I'd be surprised the Nate's S3 arc goes in an obvious way. If there is an Anakin-style redemption, maybe it is of Nate's relationship with his father for example, but Ted and Nate themselves can never reconcile.

Well said about Becks. Rupert is just the worst and Nate IS a tragic villain. I hope we see some sort of redemption because we loved him in the first season so much.

It's brilliant writing and I love the fact that they didn't have a single one on one until the end. We are beyond excited for the next episode and we hope that Nate can redeem himself. Diamond Dogs stick together!

God that's so genius, we knew the show was good but the fact that it was this plotted out is incredible!!

Star Wars continues to be influential as always! We'll definitely go back and check out the office lol

Mental health in general, and mental health in sport, has become an increasingly mainstream topic, even if still plenty of distance left to go. The tabloid newspaper The Sun* got in trouble twenty(!) years ago for an awful headline targeting a beloved former boxing champion. *remember their journo slimily asking Rebecca about yet another of Rupert's women on the side? https://www.theguardian.com/media/2003/sep/23/pressandpublishing.mentalhealth ++ Twelve years ago Gary Speed was the respected head coach of the Welsh national team. He laid the groundwork for Wales' qualification for the World Cup in Qatar last year, Wales' first appearance since 1958. (Wales were in USA's group if you remember). So it is not an understatement that Gary Speed was both successful and beloved. Sadly he committed suicide in 2011, a decade before he was able to see his project bear fruit. Gary Speed's death was a massive shock and really helped drive a national conversation about mental health. > In 2018, 7 years after his death [at age 42], an old letter written by Speed in which he noted of being depressed and wishing to sleep and "never wake up" was uncovered by his widow Louise. The letter was addressed to Louise and it was written when Speed was 17 years old. <

That scene between Nate and Ted is brutal. *Everything* Nate said shows how he took one legitimate complaint and stewed it in bitterness and resentment so long that it turned to poison inside him. He had so many opportunities to communicate what he felt he needed...but he never did.

Just to add to that, the hair color change (and all-black outfits) is a shout-out to Jose Mourinho. Nate's arc (thus far at least) is a shout-out to Anakin Skywalker, with Rupert as Palpatine. Whether S3 follows ROTJ, we'll have to wait and see, but I doubt it will be a simple transposition, the show is smart enough to keep us guessing.

Now before S3E1 you will surely be watching and reviewing the two bonus 'episodes' ? What's that, you had no idea?! ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW_qXIHtmTk&t=1s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9AxU25xfsg And maybe also the original NBCSN promo skits? At the very least it's interesting to see how much the character evolved, I didn't see how they could make a show out of this one-time gag, so I didn't bother watching the show when it first launched originally. To be fair, the writers basically didn't, beyond the basic skeleton of fish-out-water and indomitable positivity. That's so sad. You never really know when someone is suffering. In this case it seems like he was trying to seek help. Hug those around you. You never know what they could be going through.

Youtalkingtome

It is sad. He didn't know how loved and appreciated he really was. Sadly Ted was dealing with his own problems as well. Hopefully he gets back on the right track this season.
