MS NANCEEPANTS

I assume "chundle" is a term for a man's... I guess... undercarriage? which is somehow a much grosser word. 😖

Urban Dictionary has "chundle" only in verb form, meaning ways of touching the nether regions -- so it sounds like the show invented a new derivative, just for fun and to foil the censors yet again. These early episodes, in which the gang is dealing with the aftermath of the cancelled wedding, are the ones that ABC skipped over when Happy Endings first aired (late spring 2011), to get right to the ones that were all comedy. The ploy worked as intended, because it gained the show enough loyal viewers to get it renewed for a full season (forcing Damon Wayans Jr to leave New Girl after its pilot) -- but it did mean that we suddenly got these early episodes bunched up at the end. Fortunately it's all been straightened out in the streaming order.

We are really sad that such an onomatopoetically descriptive word hasn't forced its way more into our everyday vernacular.

Man. Network executives really can mess up a great creative endeavor when they really try.

Well yes, but it's hard to know how to feel about it in this case. ABC may have actually saved the show by interfering like that. There were 3 or 4 other "half a dozen friends hang out" sitcoms introduced that spring, and all of them expired after their initial 13 episodes, while Happy Endings got renewed because it was doing better numbers (I think it was better than all the others too, but we know that doesn't necessarily matter). I hate to think of a world in which we got only one short season of Happy Endings!

I appreciated what you had to say about the character of Max. I would also add that unlike the few other gay characters on TV at the time (even Will Truman of Will & Grace), Max had an active and enthusiastic sex life going. One of my favorite blink-and-you-miss-it jokes happens when Dave asks why everyone has to take off and abandon him right then. And Brad blurts out "My grandma's funeral!... it's a new Tyler Perry movie."
