In Steven Seagal's Cass, gratuitous nudity was because he is a sex pest. But mostly nudity in '80s films was because people too embarrassed to go to the adult section of the video store would buy/rent those movies. "Friday the 13th Part V" has some degree of plausible deniability for why you are buying it. People now severely underestimate the shame in having to take an adult tape to a clerk and physically have it be checked out.

I always prefer when the "normal" or straight-man character on a sitcom is as flawed and funny as all the crazier characters. That's true of Michael Bluth, as it was for Mary Tyler Moore on her classic show, for Bob Newhart on all of his series, and Dave Foley on NewsRadio, and the shows all benefited from that.
