Good evening folks. And welcome to the weekend. Another update on progress:

It's the end of the third week on Random Rocket League bullshittery (part 1) and thus far things are progressing steadily, but perhaps not as quickly as I'd like. The current timeline looks at bit like this:

A summary:

  • The video is about 10 minutes long with the beginning and the end already decided with good opening and closing jokes.
  • The first 3 minutes are looking good, with the text and the animation mostly complete and edited.
  • The middle 5 minutes is cut in its entirety and is awaiting animation next week.
  • And the final couple of minutes is a bit of a question mark, since I'm not entirely sure which scene I'll use. To be decided closer to the time.

The thing that's delayed me on this project has undoubtedly been the necessity of having to go through and manually scrub the prior streams rather than having in detailed notes. I'm afraid this is primarily due to improper workflow at the time when these streams were recorded. I've since fixed the problem using a time-stamp plugin on a keyboard hotkey.

Alas some other projects are going to have this problem. Notably the VR bullshitteries. Which by virtue of the fact that you have a headset on your face prevent you from pressing a button.

On the project itself though it's proving interesting and challenging.

The very fast nature of Rocket League, and the fact that I'm aiming for a super-cut, means that the individual scenes are extremely fast. Therefore I'm finding it more efficient to chain them together in batches before exporting them to After Effects. With a "template" project to quickly import text, Null objects, and fonts rather than set them up each time.

As a slight experiment I'm also going against the norm by setting the text colour the same as the car currently speaking. Meaning this bullshittery is comparatively colourful and high-energy.

Another consideration has been the fact that I need to pay close attention to each prior cut when it comes to determining where the text of the next cut starts. This is because the human eye can get overwhelmed if forced to keep track of things too quickly.

Film aficionados might be familiar with this being a consideration in Mad Max: Fury Road. Where the camera operators had a literal cross-hair on the front of the screen and were ordered to keep it centred on the middle of the action so that fast-paced cutting in the editing room would be much easier.

The same consideration is important in a super-cut with text. Therefore I must endeavour to keep the text as close to the next subtitle as possible as we go through our weird squeaky Rocket League noises. Otherwise I risk losing the audience. This has always been a consideration in the bullshittery edits, but not quite to this degree.

So the work continues. I'm afraid a completion estimate is still a bit too early. But I should know more by the middle of next week.

As always, thank you for your generosity for supporting me, and I hope you have a lovely weekend.
