Chapter 2 Wall Crawler

Ash stirred, his body twitching and shifting. “Nnnhhh!” His Pikachu was curled up next to him. He was hooked up to monitors that was keeping track of his status.

Ketchum rose, alerting his Pikachu. ‘Ash!’

“Oh hey Pikachu, you are doing better!” He yawned, but his tone was filled with delight. One hand covering his mouth, another hand rubbed Pikachu’s head, and another hand ruffled his hair...wait...one...two...three...four! “Ehh?!”

Four yes, he had four arms! “What happened to me?” He jumped from the bed and really jumped, getting so much air he reached the ceiling. Instead of hitting it and falling back down Ash clung to the surface. “Whoa...what the heck?!”

‘Ash calm down.’ He looked down and saw Pikachu.

“I can understand you?” His head was spinning, he tried to relax and calm down, only to relax too much and he unstuck from the surface and came back down. He hit the bed only to bounce off and hit the floor. “Ow?” There was no pain. “That didn’t hurt...why didn’t that hurt?”

He got up and took a few steps, running across a full length mirror. “Ahh!” He stumbled back. “Is that...is this me…” His four hands moved over himself, both examining himself and getting used to his new limbs. “I’m actually kinda…” He blushed. “Hehehe~!”

Ash was only in his boxers. One of the garments that managed to survive the change unscathed. Though his boxers were a bit more snug than he remembered. “How did this happen?”

‘It’s my fault.’ Ash heard another voice, and he saw the strange off color Joltik. He was in some kind of container. ‘I’m sorry I didn’t mean for this to happen, it’s all my fault.’ He sniffled.

“Hey hey hey,” Ash said quickly. “It’s okay, I’m alive right?” Ash patted his upper left arm, while folding his lower arms across his abs. The stance screamed confidence. “So no harm done!”

Joltik looked to Pikachu who just shrugged. ‘This is just how he is.’

‘So you don’t hate me?’ Ash smiled.

“Of course not, even if I knew this would happen, I still would have tried to help you, you were in pain!” Joltik was touched by the hybrid’s words.

The little guy wasn’t actually happy being secured like this, as it gave him bad memories, he went willing though as to punish himself for what he did to the innocent trainer. Ketchum seemed to sense Joltik’s unease.

Ash had questions of his own but since he flipped out he got unhooked from the machines which alerted Juniper and Oak. They came in and sat down with Ash.

Juniper had run blood tests on him, showing that Ash was officially a hybrid, a mix of human and pokemon. “Is that why I can hear Joltik and understand Pikachu?” The two Professors looked at each other.

“It is possible, but how could we test it?” Oak pondered.

“Oshawott!” The Unova water type starter came into the room. “Osha Oshawott!”

“Ash can you understand him?” Juniper asked.

He shook his head no. ‘He says he’s glad you’re awake.’ Pikachu translated.

“Thanks buddy.” Juniper and Oak shared a look.

“Amazing.”

“Incredible.”

“It seems you are able to understand Pokemon you have.” Oak said.

“But I can understand Joltik, and I haven’t caught him.” Ash pointed out.

“Could it be that he can just understand Bug and Electric types?” Juniper asked, causing Oak to close his eyes in thought.

“Perhaps he has a special bond with the Joltik as it was the pokemon that turned him.” Samuel theorized.

“It is possible that Ash has an ability now that he’s part Pokemon. Some researchers have theorized that Bug Pokemon can communicate through telepathy, like a hive mind.”

“That’s true, and Ash’s hive would be his Pokemon.”

“Hm, how could we test it.” Juniper wondered.

“Osha Osha!” Oshawott scurried over to Ash, looking like he wanted to be picked up.

“Hey Ash, why don’t you take Oshawott with you?”

“Really?” Ash smiled.

Juniper nodded. “Yes, it seems to like you.” Oshawott hugged his leg and looked up at him pleadingly.

She got his ball and gave it to Ash. “Oshawott welcome to the family.” He returned the water type, and a weird sense washed over him. “Come on out!”

‘Yay he picked me, he picked me, I have a trainer now!’

“Whoa, I can hear his voice!” Ash exclaimed. Shocking the professors and the Water type.

They ran some more tests, and Ash had always been strong thanks to his mother’s training, he now had super human strength, agility, flexibility, andstamina. “I can also walk on walls now...apparently…” He said before demonstrating the ability.

“This must be from the Bug typing, Ash can you try doing something from the Electric side?” Oak asked.

“Hm?” He closed his eyes, after a bit nothing seemed to happen. “I’m not sure how?”

‘Clear your mind Ash.’ Pikachu instructed. ‘Picture a clear sky, let it fill with dark clouds, feel the energy crackle and surge between them.’ Ash followed his instructions his hands tingling. ‘Let the clouds grow darker as the energy builds, hear the rumble of thunder. Become one with the clouds, you are the clouds, the energy is within you, feel it…’

“Ash?” Samuel didn’t know Pikachu was guiding him, unable to understand the Pikas and chus.

‘Unleash the mighty energy inside!’

“Ha!” Ash unleashed and from his hands, all four of them, he fired off electricity shocking Professor Oak. “Oops sorry Professor.”

“Kah...no worries my boy...I’m used to it.” The man has studied many pokemon and their moves.

Ketchum gazed down at his hands, they were tingling. It was weird, after doing it once he felt he could do it again. ‘Is this how Pokemon feel when they learn a new move?’ The energy was inside him, it felt a part of him still.

Like a switch he was able to turn it off and on. It helped with the mental imagery.

He now had cells that could generate electricity, he could store the energy inside him but for how long? Ash felt the current and he believed if he practiced he could control the output. “I do suggest you release your energy at least once a week for safety.”

Ash recalled how when Pikachu was overloaded he went wild and crazy. ‘I wonder if that happened to Joltik.’ He looked to the little guy and smiled. “Then I’ll need a Pokemon with Volt Absorb!”

“Are you sure?” Oak asked.

“Ash that Pokemon is dangerous, look what it did to you.” Juniper protested.

“But I’m fine!” Ash went over to Joltik. “I’ve decided I want my first catch in Unova to be this Joltik!”

The little guy’s eyes sparkled and watered with joy. ‘You’d really want me as a partner?’ Ash smiled at him and gave him a thumbs up.

“I don’t know…” She crossed her arms. “What if he bites someone again?”

“Jol Jol tik!” He gave a little claw salute. Juniper looked to Ash.

“Oh right, he promises that won’t happen.”

“The two are already linked, I’m sure Ash will be able to handle him.” Juniper sighed in defeat.

“Alright.” She pressed a button, opening the container. “Let’s get you some clothes.”

“Joltik you’re mine!” Ash got an empty monster ball and tapped the little guy. To Ash’s surprise he popped back out. “Joltik...what’s wrong?”

Fear!

Ketchum felt a heavy wave of fear coming Joltik. He twiddled his claws, embarrassed after wanting to be caught byAsh. “You don’t like to be cooped up do you?”

No, no he did not. He trembled as the memories of what happened to him surfaced. “Joltik, I promise, let me catch you and you’ll be able to ride outside the ball just like Pikachu.”

‘It’s true!’ Pikachu said.

Ash tapped him with the ball. Jiggle Ping! “Come on out Joltik!” He appeared on Ash’s hat.

Shaking off the anxiety. While Ash could now hear his Pokemon’s voice, he had an emotional link to Joltik. Now Ash could tell how his Pokemon were feeling from his bond with them, but this felt different.

Juniper gave Ash a change of clothes that she made adjustments to. His vest was upgraded to a jacket, that Ash could use to hide his extra arms. She also got him new pants to fit his taller size.

The hybrid didn’t know why he had to hide, but Juniper explained that his condition was rather new and strange, even in the Unova region where they had the Dragon Clan, who could hear the voices of dragon type pokemon, and even with Psychics, Channelers, Witches, and Aura users. They had no idea if there were any side effects to Ash’s condition, so they had to play this smart and careful, unless Ash wanted to spend the next year in a lab being studied. So Ash agreed to do his best to hide his new status as a hybrid.

As he got changed she gave Ash the 411 on the Unova League. Given the growing trend of Double Battles in the other regions Unova has started Triple Battles, increasing the carry limit to 9 for all trainers.

“The Unova Region has 15Gyms one can challenge to enter the Unova League, you only need 8 badges to enter.”

“Fifteen?!” Ash gasped.

“That’s not too surprising Kanto has twelve gyms.” Oak said.

“Huh?!” Samuel looked at Ash in surprise.

“Ash did you only visit eight of the gyms?” Ketchum remembered that Gary had managed to get ten badges and was going for an eleventh.

“Unova’s gym leaders are very important people with work outside of the gyms. Some gyms you visit might be closed temporarily while they do said work. The league also encourages that their gym leaders remain strong so gym leaders going on training journeys happens.” Ash was reminded of Sinnoh, recalling how gym leaders often were busy and their gyms were closed from short to long periods of time. Fantina was the worst culprit, leaving many gym challengers high and dry waiting for a badge. “The Unova League is more open wanting to keep its leaders more available without them getting stuck in a rut or fall behind on ability.”

Ash got excited. ‘Maybe I should try for ten badges!’ Regardless of how many badges he gets, he wanted to visit all the gyms and get experience.

“There are also the Battle Clubs, the Don George family runs them and holds all kinds of tournaments. However, if you win ten battles at a club you can challenge the Don. If you win you can get a Master’s Seed, a powerful item discovered by the family. Eating one is said to unlock a Pokemon’s potential  making it possible for them to learn more moves.” Ash recalled this as the champion of the Orange League’s Dragonite was very powerful and knew many moves. He had always wondered about that. The chance to bring out his Pokemon’s potential excited Ash further.

Last but not least Juniper upgraded Ash’s Pokedex for the Unova region. Ash used it to scan Joltik. ‘Am I forgetting something?’

Dexter: Joltik the Attaching Pokemon. A Bug and Electric type. Joltik that live in cities have learned a technique for sucking electricity from outlets and generators. In the wild they attach themselves to larger pokemon and absorb the static electricity and stores it in their internal pouch. This Joltik has the unique ability Volt Absorb, it can replenish it’s health when being hit by an Electric Type move. Joltik has the unique move Stun Needle, a move that is both Bug and Electric type, it can causes paralysis even in Electric Pokemon. It’s other moves are Absorb, Electro Web, and String Shot!

“Awesome moves Joltik!” The little guy blushed, the red of his fur glowing.

Juniper was quite proud of herself, she had scanned Joltik and was able to identify the move. Adding it to the Pokedex’s data. From another Professor’s research there did exist moves that had two types, it was very VERY rare but it happened as a Pokemon in another region had a signature move that was both Fighting and Flying type.

“Let’s go guys!” Ash took off, eager to explore this new region. Pikachu on his shoulder, Joltik on his hat, Oshawott on his other shoulder. He also wanted to travel beside Ash but wasn’t against the ball as Pikachu and Joltik were.

Oak promised to let Delia know what happened to him...good luck Samuel…

‘I swear I feel like I’m forgetting something.’ Juniper couldn’t shake the feeling, but sure enough under a mountain of her research papers was Ash’s badge case.
