Macross is literally Top Gun in space with elements of IDOL ANIME :) and I like it. "Lion", that opening u liked the most, is AMAZING.

I am thinking the old anime your Father would have seen could have been Battle of the Planets. With Ghost in the Shell the new film is based on the original 1990 anime Ghost in the Shell then there is the SAC ( stand alone complex ) 1 & 2 sort of spinoff sequels and there are condensed movie versions of the SAC 1 & 2 there are also 2 sequel movies to the original movie and recently there is a new SAC series on Netflix.
