You are still supposed to be veryyy veryyyy confused about both settings at this point, you're getting all the important beats tho dont worry

FaerieRose

Day 6 of requesting that we watch Ascendance of a Bookworm after Vinland Saga.

Muligan Shinzuo

More of the world got unveiled and luke is trying to make sense of it XD . Keep cooking.

Daniel Griffiths

i fucking love the running animation in this show!

Soulhind

Thank you for watching this hidden gem. Speaking of, I don't know if it will get enough votes someday, but at least it entered the twitch tournament recently : it's Lycoris Recoil. 12 episodes too and a truly beautiful hidden gem too ! Maybe it could take this slot after Vinland Saga ?

Daniel Griffiths

luke, i love that your approaching this show with the right attitude. by far the best reaction iv seen to this show! dw everything gets explained when it needs too:)

Keith Merrington

This anime was acquired by Disney+ and they pretty much hid it away, which is why it didn't make a bigger impact last year.

Grant Beaudette

Now THIS is a show you'll have to watch a second time.

Tatersalad666

I think a large part of the reason why it isn't popular is because people dropped it for Kiruko being trans. I saw quite a few comments from people when it came out saying they were dropping it for that reason, which is really dumb on multiple levels but it explains at least some of the reason it wasn't bigger. It also came out in the same season as Oshi no Ko, Demon Slayer, and Dr. Stone so it had a ton of competition for attention.

Some0neElse

The problem with Heavenly Delusion is that many people got too confused and dropped it in favor of watching more mainstream/hyped anime like Hell's Paradise , Dr. Stone, Mashle, Oshi No Ko etc

Sebastian Stróż

I highly suggest skipping comments for this episode. HD does a good job at keeping enough secrets to keep you wondering but also explaining things when it needs to.

To me, the main reason is that Disney+ was doing the international broadcasting, and Disney+ has no experience in the field. Simply put: they suck at broadcasting anime. They don't talk about them, they don't communicate about them, they don't promote them on the platform, they don't warn where/when/how the anime will be broadcast. They don't know how to create hype around anime. In 2023, thanks to them, Heavenly Delusion went unnoticed. I was waiting for the anime and I knew it would be broadcast on Disney+ and yet I had a hard time finding it on the platform. I had to use the search bar and type in the Japanese title "Tengoku Daimakyou" to find it. As if Disney+ wanted to hide it. Plus, there were subtitles issues. By 2022, they'd already killed Summer Time Rendering, which went unnoticed because of them. Idem for Tatami Time Machine Blues. Disney+ just kill the anime they broadcast.

kiwi

Don't worry Luke, it only gets weirder and more confusing from now on.

GTB

Keep cooking, keep paying attention to details. Understanding will come... ...you already have foreshadowing and "hidden" informations ;).

Andrej Simic

I like how we got thrown into this World and need to figure out what is going on

isaac basabe

This was my favorite new anime from 2023, hidden gem all the way. No hell paradaise, no chainsawman... this. So good.

NoName

The kid's nose was bleeding because when the dude fell, Mimihime hugged him and he remembered the naked image he got sent. In japan they depict getting a boner as nose bleeding.

Tatersalad666

That's true, I forgot about the Disney+ jail and that is probably the main reason. I just remembered seeing a lot of other stuff around it with people being mad and dropping it. Disney seems completely uninterested in promoting any of the shows they get exclusive rights to.

rostikowb

It was only after the second viewing that I realized who the blond guy was and the black-haired woman who died of the disease...

LordDanzo

This show is really good and should be more popular, but calling it hidden gem is a bit of a stretch. Disney killed a lot of the hype but it's not that "hidden".

Mason

yooo tf Luke saying weird to gae ppl lol

BlekDimon

Not sure about it being a hidden gem, it's still is like 12th most popular anime from 2023, which is pretty good considering that probably around few hundred anime air yearly. All there is to it, is just that it's not that mainstream compared to some other titles. Anyway, still a great series.

Thomas Juino

This anime is so good...

patros36

If we are talking about next in line anime, i still recommend Golden Kamuy. Thats a REAL hidden gem, know very few people that watched it, even though its really really good.

Frentzy

The anime ends in a big cliffhanger q_q. Rumors saying possible summer 2024 (s2). We'll see.

Iron_claw

Also, Luke, I know you pause to do commentary. I don't have a problem with that, but you keep on trying to put things together and figure out what's going on. Don't worry about it. Everything will be explained by the end of the series. You can think of this anime like a 1000 piece puzzle At first they opened the box and they just tossed all the pieces out on to the table all at once At first you're not gonna be sure what goes where, but everything's gonna start making sense. Once the pieces start falling into place.

Mike Wang

I can already imagine Luke watching this anime with his difficulty identifying anime faces lol

LordDanzo

I mean, there's not much he can do about it. When we watch it, we piece it together in our minds. He has to verbalize his thoughts, otherwise we wouldn't how he's piecing everything together.

syaimaral

I agree with the made in abyss vibes. I'm interested to see the world, the backstory, more monsters, settlements, how other people are surviving, etc. I feel like I got the gist of things already. A show like this is only good if you discover things along the way yourself so I'll keep things very vague with my ideas as a first time watcher. Very interesting there seems to be a subset of "super children" in an isolated place. Or that two people are traveling to find someplace while carrying a cure for something.

syaimaral

I think watching someone try to piece it all together is half the fun.

Prohibidibabido

Awww, skipped the OP. I know you've already reacted to it, but I love watching good OPs every chance I get. Get's me hyped for the episode. This OP is spoiler free btw.

Prohibidibabido

I wouldn't say Heavenly Delusion wasn't popular. But it had A LOT of competition for the season it came out in. Spring 2023, we had more Demon Slayer, more Dr Stone, Mashle, Hell's Paradise, and Oshi No Ko.

ElectricAnt

it really wasn't. it might not look that bad in terms of MAL numbers (except for the atrocious score), but that doesn't translate to real world popularity. I know maybe one or two people who watched it

Louispul5

Well the kid with the ball under the teacher's door camera is a girl from the eyelashes, and has Maru's face. So my money's on clones. even alternate sex clones. Or even sex clones, since all those kids are getting it on in that facility.

yorozuyapetel

it is NOT a hidden gem, it mightve been overshadowed by bigger shows releasing at the same time, but it was still one of the best shows releasing that season and anyone watching it agreed that it was one of the contenders for anime of the year. the only reason it was called a hidden gem was because it was released on disney+, who previously completely killed the talk around a similar anime called summertime rendering. great show, but went under almost everyone's radar. either way, these shows arent even close to being "hidden gems". hidden gems are shows that you dont see anyone talking about under comments because there's not enough people that have seen them, or because the conversation around them has completely died down.

Prohibidibabido

I follow multiple anime communities and it was being talked about every week. In top 10 lists throughout the season. Sounds like it wasn't popular in your circles. Most of my anime watching friends have seen it. Sounds like we both have personal biases.

JammySplosha

i can tell you right now, NOBODY is yelling at you, at all, this is a VERY confusing show that doesnt baby you, its a mystery on crack, like another person said, its a 1000 piece puzzle thats been mixed and thrown in front of you. absolutely feel free to come up with your own theories on what you think is happening, and as every episode goes on, those theories will likely change, as more and more information gets dripped around you, everyone whos watched this show knows just how confused they were when they first watched, nobody has the right to be mad about whatever you think is going on, so let it rip, thats half the fun of this show :)

Nicolas Castro

There is also the case that Disney+ distributes some animes in a few regions, I am from Latin America and for example, when the first part of the last season of Bleach was released, it was not available in this region and I think many others, which generated quite a lot of controversy since if you wanted to see the program you had to watch it in a pirated way, now imagine an anime with less relevance, Undead Unlock they added it to this region on the platform two months after it was released and they do not bother to advertise it, Heavenly Delusion was not the case luckily, I could see it on the platform while it was on broadcast, but they simply handle the distribution of the anime badly

Stefan

It was weird, you don't need to be shy:) Everything is weird here and it is nice! One of the most obvious and satisfying death, well deserved:) Just watch the next episode it is not just some bullshit made for audience, in fact this anime is actually good. And again do not forget everything in this world is weird, I swear that weird & sinister soundtrack from Re:Zero would fit perfectly here :D

Kyle Garrett

First timer watcher, just speculating. no spoilers pls Huh. Okay. So I still think Heaven made the monsters and that the kids in there are like modified clones or something, but the weird power has thrown me for a loop. Maybe they're connected to the monsters in some way and that's why they can kill them? If so then outside kid definitely is an escaped clone or something, and the woman that died is probably with whatever group sent the message to the inside kids in ep 1. Currently i'm wondering if maybe the drug doesn't 'save' the kids, but saves everyone else? Like maybe it's a virus designed to take advantage of the weird connection they have to the monsters, killing all the kids and monsters? Though if he is a clone, why wouldn't it work on him as well? Maybe they are a pair, so both parts of the pair need to be injected/infected for it to work? Not really sure. Also now curious if the girl bodyguard is trans, or if it's a weird anime thing where the accident happened the brother 'died' but in reality his consciousness transferred into her body or something? That could explain him wanting to kiss his own reflection... though that'd still be super weird.

AchmodinIV SWE

that ending was pretty surprising

ArtKi

4:25 "Why is he so sleepy?" Drink! (because there's a drinking game were you drink every time Luke asks a question that is immediately answer) 13:43 Drink! 19:04 "How does he get down?" Drink! 22:42 Monsters. "There's no walls" the monsters can fly!

Aaren YASS

Lesbians, gays, trans, nonbinaries, badass choreography, this show's got it all! -

Aaren YASS

Also what in the Generator Rex was that "places hand on monster and goes through nervous system" type thing, that was crazy. This kid and the ones in this place called "Heaven" sure arent normal humans. I mean the other guy survived a crazy fall like that to the face with just some scratches. -
