this is more gory than its manwha imo

Orieng

Damn! i love Dark Fantasy!

Normadus

the OST from the scene with instruments was awesome. Sawano showing why he is the GOAT

Xortron

ARISE

Haruto

The beginning of episode 1 was adapted from the novel. Its a dungeon break thats been occupying Jeju island for 3 years as mentioned in the anime. It'll definitely play a big part later in the anime.

KariaP

it won’t stay this way all the way through, that’s all i’m gonna say.

Normadus

17:30 We know about 2 S-rank breaks. ( excluding one gate but it would contain spoilers ) The first one is the ant island, which you can see in the first episode. The second one is from the "first S-rank gate" that ever showed up and after it opened, monsters laid waste to the entire west coast area of America, slaughtering scores of S-Ranks Hunters along with millions of civilians.

Some0neElse

Is there another anime with similar premise? I swear ive seen something like that like year ago

Omer Durrani

Watching this for the first time as well without reading the manhwa/light novel. I think that notification might be something like the "reward" of the dungeon? Since we saw the last blue flame go out and he called it a timer... so he stayed alive (damn barely) and proved his faith? Idk but omg so damn excited for next episode and next reaction!!!

Cris

27:40 it will be explained later what that notification at the end of the episode was

Flyer

Lets gooooo

Kyla

It is so weird seeing it animated after all these years xD i like it alot... But they are really taking their time.. episode 2 covered what i would have pressed in a 45min First Episode... Well shits going down next week i guess

2024-01-15 22:13:43 That's my guess. It makes me think of "The Time Reincarnated as a Slime." He proved his faith, he is going the first one that they know of so far to level up in some way.

Keith Merrington

That wasn't too bad. I really liked the puzzle aspect to figuring out the commandments. Reminds me of squid game.

Animeter

I love it already

David Taylor

2 major dungeon breaks have happened by now you will learn of both and how bad the first on was. Also the notification will be slightly explained next episode but the full explanation is a long way away from now.

Yula

The waiting game is so long. :( but what the heck we all been waiting for the anime release

wildhunt1973

I agree. I would have done it as a 45 minute episode, like Sasaki and Peeps this year and a few other anime I've seen.

Arcade'owy Łowca

My presumption after watching 1&2 episode (so no spoilers) This is a "lvl up" room. You will either win staying in that circle, or die. Either way is acceptable, and is considered "a tribute to the God". Only a few can lvl up, and the rest is probably expected to leave the room.

Kyla

I Love sasski and peeps...so refreshing new and fun <3

SamJaz

18:06, the dungeon break 3 years ago on Jeju island let those ants break out all over and killed thousands. There's been other dungeon breaks in the past, including one in California iirc where a massive dragon burned down cities all the way the Utah.

wildhunt1973

This show had a really good first episode, but this episode was BRILLIANT. Almost like AoT episode 5.

gruntmaster1

Now enjoy the 1 week wait for finding out what the cliffhanger is about :D As someone who has read the manhwa, it is nice to see someone going in blind and that it is able to give you the same experience as when I first read it.

Abe J

The only thing more annoying than spam twitch people are you people who have read the material before hand. "I'm not gonna spoil it.. but but... next episode!!!" " You know what I'm saying!!" "Don't get attached yo.." " don't worry this or that will change. " Can't ya just stfu? Is it really that hard to not hint?

Thamor

No I think 99% were ready for this episode as most if not all who put comments here have read the manga at least. I do prefer the Light Novel story more as it has more content that manga just skips over.

gruntmaster1

Don't forget spamming specific words or phrases. I must must admit I had my "phase" when the overlord anime was airing, but yeah spoilers without any warnings or regard for others is annoying.

syaimaral

I thought he would have crawled onto the altar and stare straight up so he can "see" all of them when they all closed in on him. That was assuming they wouldn't attack him, but clearly they just started swinging.

Kyle

the answer to all your questions is: Bob If you spell his name backwards you get his evil twin

gruntmaster1

Just read that the anime is going to have 2 Cours, so 23-25 episodes. Not sure if there will be a break inbetween cours, but it seems like a good pase based on the scenes we see in the op.

Avis Pakaya

The ant scene in the 1st eps happened in past, and they [Spoiler] and we'll know probably around eps 18-20 (if this go that far)

Chuuei

The pacing is something what actually confuses me. They introduced some characters which will only get relevant way later in the story in episode one in an anime original way not found in the webnovel or webtoon and yet all sources i can find only say twelve episodes for the first season. With now episode two we have 1/6 of the whole season and people not knowing the source still have not the slightest idea what the story is really about. Maybe at least one more season was planned right from the beginning, otherwise i can't understand the progression of the anime.

Yula

The legend of Jinwoo starts

Kyla

I think it was planned as two parter or they already preparing for a second season... As U Said, with this pacing we would just be at the startig line with ep12

Kyla

The weird thing is...solo leveling has so much content (chapters) that they don't need to scale it...like 100+ chapters... Why dragging it Out?

Avis Pakaya

You missed the "You Completed the Secret Quest [Courage of the Weak]" pop up

Anonymous

This is the next Attack on Titan. Easily.

Soulhind

A huge shout out to the VA's anger play at the end, conveying masterfully all the welled up anger against the selfish others and about hypocrisy Jin-Woo felt about himself "glad" that he's the only one of the last suvivors, that has to die. And again Jin-Woo you rocks in anime format too !!! I love how they've chosen to do it. Wonderful !

Grim

it means that you will need to wait till next week to find out. what that ending means lol.

Thasquealer

Just speculating here: I assumed this as well, and to continue that thought, he will become a player. Maybe that explains why normal hunters cant improve and maybe players are able to?

Anonymous

Easy. Because they learned their lesson with God of Highschool. 85 chapters squeezed into 12 episode is dogshit

Soulhind

I'm thinking completely the opposite though as a novel reader. It's all spoiler free, don't worry ^^ They cut so many sentences, and even switched some sentences between two people and more, all to make it more balanced I think. And knowing all the back and forth between all of them in that scene and all Jin-Woo's inner thoughts, they clearly couldn't have made it shorter in my opinion. They just kept what was fitting for the rythm to make our hearts pound faster and faster all the way through. Even shorter, and we would lack information, or self-investment in the story. And if you think "yeah okay, but they could have shorten it by not giving us this flashback and these explanations about monster cores etc..." And I'd answer you : the explanations about the world, nope, couldn't make without them : you saw Luke who needed these answers as a 1st time watcher. And the flashback ? This time, it's the novel (and maybe a tiny bit the manhwa) readers that are very happy with it. Because of this introduction and also the intro of Hunter Cha Hae-In, we have a good inkling as to where the show is gonna take us : to a more novel-oriented narration. I am 90% sure that there will be more romance developed in the anime than it was in the manhwa, and the profoundness of the relationships in the novel are showing in the frienship we saw with Baek-Ho and his two fellows rank S friends (demo okashii, arere !!) isn't there a new face neither the manhwa nore the novel readers have ever seen in the story ?? (something about some S rank thunder power user... ?). I'm not gonna say more than this.

Yuno

Ep 1 shows the island with Ants, 3 years prior to current events and has the Navy and a "army" of Hunters and a lot of S rank's with them. I think its safe to say with out worry of spoilers, that is the worst Dungeon break so far... or at least shown to be the worst

Kyla

But still...using a 12 episode series of the best selling manwha and dragging it out like this..its a Bit too much.. don't u agree ? Well... Lets see how the rest of the season is going ^^ either way... Im happy to See it finally animated

Omer Durrani

Though I hope he isn't the only "player", which would be an interesting power dynamic to explore.

Omer Durrani

Oh that could be an interesting way of looking at it. They completed all 3 commandments when everyone entered the circle and the blue flames that popped up as a timer was basically the chance given to them to "get out alive" since they fulfilled the commandments. But the person who has completed "faith" and stayed behind until the full timer runs out (all blue flames expire) gets rewarded I.e. Qualifies as a "player"

Casey Mitchell

Attack on Titan is dogshit compared to Solo Leveling. Solo Leveling actually has a satisfactory conclusion and good writing.

Kyla

@soulhind thats correct ... And thats also Not what i meant... The inner dialogs etc. the world building that IS focused in in the manwha...that could have been pushed Back...thats why i said a feature lenght first Episode to Cover it all would BE best insead of waisting two episodes on Charakter an world building .. ofc some parts need to be left out.. well i like it either way ^^ and im happy we finally got a solo leveling anime ..<3

Xaniss

The OST is doing the manwha justice, not to mention the animation! A1 and Hiroyuki Sawano are popping off.

kloos

The premiere should have been a special of EP 1 and EP2 together. Superb reaction and amazing ep. Saturdays are going to be pretty nice from now on.

Casey Mitchell

This opening sequence is basically what progging an MMO would be like in real life, with no respawns and no do-overs. You either clear the raid first attempt or you wipe to the mechanics.

Anonymous

As someone who read the LN before the Manga even came out, you're wrong. The story is good, but it has entire sections of story that are average at best. And to say AOT had bad writing is just objectively wrong.

Yuno

I’m talking about the anime only to avoid spoilers man

Paddy

Dunno if u missed it or if someone else commented but the last screen showed (congratulations on completing the secret quest "courage of the weak" and asks if he wants to become a "player"), pretty videogame esc :O what more is there to this world?

Zer0

The show won't stay like this all the way though. As a reader of the manhwa it just escalates from here.

Zer0

The thing with the ants happened 3 years ago. It was in the subtitles on the first episode. I've seen some confuse it with something else.

axilir21

Yess thank you, I was wondering if it was 12 or 24 episodes

axilir21

Well, that's the fun thing for Manhwa readers, we'll still get surprises we didn't know before

Thamor

Naah, this is just epic power leveling story. This has nothing to do with amazing story telling of AOT. Solo Leveling is good, but honestly the story isn't anything deep like AOT was. Stories like 86 or AOT aren't that many done.

Nick karl Reforsado

no its not AOT is good Solo Leveling is good but the writing in Solo Leveling is just your typical powerup op story it was just carried by the art style but its not bad its enjoyable on its own way. and happy Ending doesn't mean good writing lol

Ryan Thomas

that bit at the end isn't part of the ending its because he was still alive when the last blue flame went out so he completed the 3rd trial set by that god and now this has come up so I guess we gotta wait and see next week what happens from here.

Maciek

9:10 Rumbling Rumbling!

Marcio Neves

That was... intense. Man, people being people: "me first, F*** you, I have family" (as if no one else would have too). That one was way better than the first episode, NOW I understand the hype 😁

2024-01-14 02:11:58 Here are some things that were not completly explained in the anime or you just missed and you are no confused about: 1: In the first secene of the first episode it says "3 years past" so its not something that foreshadows something later in the story but the complete opposite 2. The thing that is shown is a "Dungeon Break" of a Dungeon which was inhibited by Ants. That means, the Ants were too strong and couldnt be slain within a weak so the had they broke out of the Doungeon an wrecked havoc on the real world. That is then the reason why the government sends an "army" of hunters to deal with them. Part of this army are manly the S Rank hunters, of which we see three in the first scene (the healer, the thunder magic guy, and the brawler guy) and one more later (the fire magic user). How that subjugation misson turned out in the end isnt shown and is something that is relevant for a later part of the story. 3 . You asked why some hunters use armor and some not. Reason for that is, that armor aswell as weapons infused with magic/magic stones are extremly expensive. So only high ranking hunters (C and above) normaly have enough money to buy both. Low Ranking hunters (D, E) mostly only buy Weapons infused with magic, because these are way more usefull for killing beasts and clearing dungeons (for example if you have a weapon that is strong enough to kill lets say 10 beasts and you only need the money of 4 beasts for a new weapon you can save the rest). But because the hunters we are currently seeing are all D or E rank they all only have weapons. Just the healer (B Rank) and the Leader of the Party (C Rank) are higher in Rank and could afford armor. But because one is a healer and the other is a mage they tend to be in the backline and actually dont need either of these things for low ranking doungeons 4. You missed the first information window that popped up just before Sung Jinwoo died, which showed, that he completed the requirements for the quest "courage of the weak". Completing that quest then gave him the right to be a "player" (whatever that means xD). After that he only has 0.02 sec to accept that proposal (the very last scene is him "clicking" the "yes-button" so he probably accepted). 5 . As of now, we dont know how he managed to complete the quest "courage of the weak". The only thing that is shown regarding that, is that one of the reason was, that he was still inside the room and on top of the altar when the last blue flame extinguished (the timer was up).

Alex Lavigne

The opening is stressing me out though because a few spoilers in it should not be there if they are only doing 12 episodes.

Mason

no way there is no way he remembners the name Jinwoo and struggles with easier ones lmao, this ep was fireeeeeee

Frentzy

- "do we know what this weird place is". -you find that after 2/3 into the story (so near end basically). - "is the notification part of the anime or ending" - the anime made people confuse, the notification did appear in his face as he was about to die. The text said he cleared the requirements for the secret quest within the dungeon. - "is it an isekai" - No. Definition of the show's genre (kinda spoiling what the show is about by spoiling it's genre): the show is part of the level up genre where protagonist receive a system, and he uses that 'cheat' system which only he has access and farm until he become OP, and usually MC end up flexing left and right. So guys If you are into those type of ideas then you can search manhua/manhwas/webtoons similar to solo leveling, it's a TROPE genre and it has same formula as solo leveling, so it's not a unique genre per say such as AOT.

Louispul5

This episode pretty much confirms we can make Luke puke with Gantz

Louispul5

In book form they are Called LitRPGs. Dakota Kraut wrote some good ones. I like his divine dungeon series. Guy gets turned into a dungeon, and people keep trying to steal everything inside him. Explains how Dungeons exist and are always full of treasure and magic no matter how old they are.

GTB

Tbh, I don't find this episode that tough or horrible. At this point we know almost nothing about the characters, we haven't spent much time with them and so we don't have any strong emotional implications of their fate. They die, they live, we don't really care yet. And the violence is mid. Attack on Titan has more difficult scenes...and I'm not even talking about a certain waaaaaaay more traumatic eclipse that would cost you a lot in psychotherapy if you find this ep "horrible" XD. I still really don't get the huge hype for this anime.

Insane Deuit

The hype for the anime is mostly when we get to chapter 30ish in the manhwa. The panels in the fight scenes during that and everything after is just magnificent. (We just wanted good animation cuz this anime is mostly about action)

Louispul5

They're doing better in the show than the book. In the book you knew NOTHING but what happened in the dungeon. All these characters and events outside were not until after this segment.

Louispul5

Yeah solo leveling's writing is just okay. It was one of those fun, pretty, hungry again an hour later kind of stories.

BondePower

seeing your reaction to this makes me want you to react to higurashi: when they cry so badly. Would be a great patreon exclusive

ArtKi

11:36 "... run man!" I haven't noticed you cheering on a protagonist like this before!

Waka -Sama

Judging by these two episodes, the jeju island raid is going to be peak!

kiwi

Seeing Luke clutching his hands together in concern at 12:16 was so funny. I forgot the feeling of experiencing this story for the first time. Though the anime was even gorier than the mahhwa.

Lichmourne

You being numb to gore doesn't make the violence 'mid'. If I watched this 7 years ago, Id be in shock. Also don't ever focus on the hype of anything. Just consume the content on a personal level.

Cassii

you saying this is the only way an anime only will notice anything like that

Anonymous

That notification part was good as a cliffhanger but was done in a bit confusing way. It was part of the story, not th ending. Just before he died the last blue flame died out, so the countdown was over.

Dallio

Mr. Sawano with the banger ost again

Danda

The part with the ants is something that timeline wise has already happened. But it's not something that was introduced in the source material until much later in the story.

Some0neElse

could be that... i think it was during my covid days so i dont remember much of what i was watching lol

Mariokempes

#3 day of asking Luke to watch Kamikatsu

Anon

I love in the original source material when Sung says to the guy that was trying to praise the statue, "You're praising the wrong God!" it hits so hard

Animeter

In german sub he said that. I think it's a translation issue for eng sub

Cédric Michaud

I'm an anime-only but I think that because he became a "Player" at the end of the episode, completing this "Courage of the Weak" quest, he might get a "power-up" and survive this somehow.

Cédric Michaud

I've heard it was introduced in the korean Light Novel but not the manwha (japanese manga if Luke wants to know)

Cédric Michaud

I think we anime only won't understand the spoilers unless we try really hard to analyse every detail, like most anime openings. For example (I'll try to stay vague), JJK season 2 second opening, some visuals points to what happens to one of the most iconic character of the series, but I didn't understand anything until I saw the episode it happens, or the visuals of a city from the point of view of the sky also would be another good example.

The Pots

> violence is mid. no, you're just numb to gore. in normal levels, this is already insane compared to several anime out there with their censorships and them not even showing the bodies

Alex Lavigne

Thats not what is stressing me out I was saying if they are only making 12 episodes I'm worried they will mess up by rushing something because aomething in the opening appears later.

isaac basabe

Name of the Anime/Mahwa is solo leveling. So make your guess about the player thing...

Matthew Williams

Luke the person who told you about Bijou Island (Ant Island) in episode 1 was wrong. While we will maybe in season 2 or 3 go back to Bijou Island what we saw in episode 1 was a flashback it was very brief but it did flash on screen that the incident was 3 years ago. In fact as you had asked about the worst Dungeon break in the world Bijou Island 3 years ago was it. The entire Island was lost, a majority of civilians devoured outright, 1000's of Hunters dead. It was a massacre, the whole Island was lost and abandoned though since it is an Island they left it and ran.

Matthew Williams

Luke asked about the worst Dungeon so far which Bijou Island ATM was, we aren't discussing future events here.

Danda

Fair enough, I'm only working from the Manhwa.

WONG KOON YU EDEL

The smile reminds me of Dina Fritz in aot

Omer Durrani

BAHAHAHAHA Omg I feel dumb now that you mention that XDDDD Fair fair, good catch :D

Lu C

Totally understand, watching Noblesse I was like 'wait did they press fast-forward button?' or 'and what about the rest?'... We can only hope that this won't be the case. It would be better if the opening was partially a promo in general.

Some0neElse

then idk... it could actually be a video of the opening chapter of Solo Leveling now that i think about it. Cause i specifically remember MC being weak af and having to go through portals to pay for medical bills of family member

GTB

And a Marvel can be uncomfortable for a 10yo. There's always someone who'll be "shocked", even for fairly low levels and depictions of violence. Everyone has their own sensibility, of course, that's not what I'm talking about. Besides, violence and gore aren't the same thing. A scene without a single drop of blood can be far more violent than one with blood everywhere. How the violence is represented, staged, illustrated, felt by the characters, the general tone etc. all play a part in the impact. There are even comedies with scenes of violence and gore that are funny and make you laugh, not shudder. And on the other hand, in Saving Private Ryan, Spielberg stages a disturbing stabbing without a drop of blood. I'm not numb to violence and gore. The Berserk eclipse was impactfull and traumatic. A lot of other anime scenes as well. This ep of Solo Leveling is, for several reasons imho, fairly low-impact. And I'm not saying this is for a general audiences. It's just how I fell about it. You don't have to agree with me. Lichmourne > don't worry, the hype has no impact on my way of looking at and valuing things. I just note that I don't share the hype's crazy enthusiasm. As with Demon Slayer or Jujutsu Kaisen.

Adam Saunders

As an ani only, it didn't feel dragged out at all. It built suspense well, I do think they should've released a 45-minute ep or 1+2 in the same week though.

Adam Saunders

Literally!!! It pisses me off so much when people use leading phrases like that like im not dumb, if you say "Ah yeah... you'll find out about xxx soon" or "manga readers hyped for ___ character next ep" I, along with other people are going to connect the dots, people arent generally that stupid. As of recent, no one's been worse than jjk fans tho.

Ben

i think the girl with the purple hair and ponytail is jinwoo's sister

Daniel Golas

No the island with ants from the first episode is actually big dungeon break that happened in the PAST. Also we were introduced to few badass characters there which are gonna make apearance eventually soo I hope you recognise some of them when you see them :D

Daniel Golas

I was in the comitee and this is how it went indeed

James Dorling

As a manwha reader, this has absolutely blown past my expectations. Stellar animation, VAs, score, etc. I can say now with almost absolute certainty that you are in for the experience of a lifetime

Daniel Lubo

The music is just a masterpiece, I can't believe 50% of the budget when there

Anonymous

“This is hooorible. It’s brilliant. It’s fantastic. But this is hoorible.” Bro switched from react mode to review mode back to react mode quicker than Sonic.🤣🤣💀

Tom Boggess

the ending of the episode was him surviving the "secret quest" accepting to become a "player"

Brent heflin

In my experience Korean novels and manga/manhwa are typically a lot more brutal.

Valrenas

The thing with the Ant Island happens twice in the story. The one we saw was from 5 years before the story really starts. The 4 strongest there are important later, especially the fire mage, beast fighter and healer. That was basically a glimpse of their backstory

rostikowb

So they are somewhere between Japanese and Chinese. And of course, since it's a Korean light novel, there's a "System" here 😂

Mr. Dog

This is nothing. Watch Elfin Lied. That's pretty brutal. or genocyber.
