I'm so excited to see you're watching this now. Can't wait for part 2 and 3. You're in for a wild ride Luke. If you get the chance, you should check out the 'Kara No Kyoukai: The Garden of Sinners' film series. It's also by Ufotable and Type-Moon, set in the same universe as Fate, Tsukihime and Mahoyo. Its very dark too. Someone linked a trailer for the DVD release in the anime suggestions channel of the discord back in december. Could be worth a reaction, or just to gauge interest from the community. It's a series of 8 films ranging from around 40 minutes each to 2 hours in length for a couple of them. If you enjoy heavens feel it'll probably be up your alley, though it's done out of chronological order as a mystery you piece together as you watch them. So you'll have a lot of questions that will slowly explain themselves throughout the series as it progresses. Definitely a great series though, especially for those into more supernatural, thriller sort of stuff

I seem to remember/ understood the initial setup quite different between Shinji and Shirou…. Pretty sure the hurt arm shirou had had something to do with shinji who is jealous of his skill, that’s why Sakura turned up at shirou’s door feeling apologetic and continued to take care of him. Shinji had to quit archery due to the hurt arm for months. While shirou is being a nice guy (since UBW) he still thinks Shinji as a friend and offer to help. Shinji who is glad shirou is not in the club anymore got pissed coz shirou still tried to help in archery stuff after he made him quit….. at least that’s what I take away from their initial relationships….. PS: I always wanted to ask, are those jellyfish real behind Luke?

As well made as the HF movies are (especially visually, it's amazing), the sad thing is that it's pretty much impossible to understand fully the story of the 3 routes of Fate/stay night with just the anime adaptations, which remove half the things you read in the visual novel. Also, as a lot of people you probably watched Fate/zero first (it's meant to be last), which kinda spoils two major twists of the Heaven's Feel route (everything about Sakura and Illya), so it might dull the experience. That being said, I really like the HF movies. Better than the UBW series imho.

I really hope you react to the Kara no Kyoukai Movies by ufotable at some point. They are excellent. Also the Witch on the Holy Night trailer is out for the next ufotable movie

Yeah all the anime adaptations of Fate stay night just adapt the 3 routes of the visual novel of the same name (so for example, Fate zero is different). The "old" Fate stay night TV series (2000s) mainly adapted the first route of the visual novel, named "fate", and also bastardized a part of the UBW route in the middle. The second route of the vn is UBW, which had another series entirely about it later, and the third route is Heaven's feel, which those movies are about. Those 3 routes are alternative stories depending on your choices in the visual novel, BUT they were to be read/played in order (fate, then UBW, then HF), you had no choice about that. The narration is very subtle and the whole overall story followed that strict order. That's why Heaven's feel, the third and final route, is when you're told the truth about the "holy grail". All 3 routes are "canon", but HF feels more like a real closure for obvious reasons.

the movie cut away a lot of necessary details yes, but you're not exactly right either. Shirou hurt his arm at his part time job (lifting stuff for a moving company). Shinji however, was responsible for driving Shirou out of the club after that (because the club is a very traditional archery club that focuses much on form and tradition, hence requiring exposed shoulders when using the bow, and Shirou having a scar there is seen as a bad thing). Shinji didn't literally drive him out of the club but he did make remarks about it and he is the vice captain of the club, so you can see how it ended up like that. The movie might've retconned this part though because it seems to frame it as Shirou deciding to leave by himself and Shinji not wanting him to leave in that scene where they were talking near the entrance of the club about the competition as he decided to quit. A lot of the Shinji scenes are new to the movie as well, so idk how canon it is, but the movie at least seems to imply that he didn't really want Shirou to quit archery (remember he has that tsundere love/hate relationship with Shirou where he wants to be friends with Shirou but also likes to bully him). So he's bitter that Shirou decided not to continue with the club despite presumably being at least partially responsible for driving him out (assuming they didn't retcon that). Then Shirou continues to act like he would still help the club and that just makes him more bitter about it. We see this again at the scene where he asked Shirou to clean the club. From his reaction to Shirou agreeing to do it, it's pretty obvious that he wanted Shirou to refuse. Like Sakura mentioned a bit earlier, he has a difficult personality. I think deep down he just wants Shirou to be open with him, to the point where he can refuse and banter with him, instead of acting reserved like Shirou does with everyone. Something like "close enough to fight" basically. It's a complex relationship that you won't get here with Luke making his usual sex jokes about them kissing.

huh? not sure where you got this info, but it's incorrect. Sakura's (and Rin's) biological mother is Zenjou Aoi, who is a part of the Zenjou clan, not the Matou clan. She is the childhood friend of Matou Kariya that was seen in Zero, so maybe that's how you got confused, but there is no blood relation between Sakura and Shinji as far as I am aware. Sakura merely got adopted because the Matou needed a successor with magical circuits and Tokiomi had 2 children with excellent magical circuits.

You can either have spoiled 1 twist in 3rd route or the ending of whole anime depending on watch order and for anime only Fate/zero makes more sense as starting point

The animes roughly have the same story as the original, except for a few fillers (which are not important). So I think the order is the same, it makes more sense to follow the actual story, thus it's better not to start with Zero. What do you mean by your first sentence btw ? If I spoiled anything, I'll edit my comment, even if here I don't think that's the case.

Despite what someone in chat suggested in the stream, Sakura was not given away because she is the outcast/spare (I'm not even sure where that whole backstory came from. I've never read any official background indicating Rin was sick as a child or that Sakura was conceived because of that, so I'm pretty sure this is all fanfic unless someone can point to an official source stating otherwise). Rin's domain of magecraft (the five elements) simply fit better with the Tohsaka magecraft (storing elemental energy in jewels) vs Sakura's domain of magecraft. I'm pointing this out because it's important to note that Tokiomi did not particularly love Rin more than Sakura or the other way around. He simply saw his children as his successor in magecraft, as should be according to traditional/noble magecraft family. He directly explained this in Zero as well to Kariya, that he saw giving away Sakura to the Matou as the best thing he could do for her both for her future as a mage and for her protection against the clock tower. Not defending Tokiomi here, just wanted to clarify the point.

Yes exactly.. Also kind of in Tokiomi's defence, he wouldn't have known either Matou's magecraft or Sakura's state, as it violates the rules between mage families. It was stated in F/HA (I think) that had Tokiomi known how Sakura was treated he would immediately bring her back and take her to Luvia's family instead.
