Fay X84

Rudy doesn’t want to go back because of what happened with his family and his previous life as a shut-in. His first genuine relationships have been made after reincarnating. Plus, the girl Nanahoshi didn’t die, so she still has hope that someday she will be able to go back to her family and life in Japan. Rudy in the other hand died and got reincarnated. So even if he goes back, he will be either a soul without a vessel or an illegal resident without any magic or credibility because of his different features. Even Nanahoshi thought he was American or European.

Archelin

I was not in the same boat cause i read the LN. But it was really hard to read in the LN too...

Yui

There is a difference between being reincarnated and being transported/teleported to another world. That is one of the big takeaways from this episode, but I've seen you use "reincarnated" when referring to either situation here and also for Re:Zero. It's only reincarnation when you die and are reborn as a new person. Nanahoshi and Subaru aren't reincarnated. :)

Keith Merrington

Calm down. A major plot reveal and you're still obsessed with Rudy not knowing who Fitz/Sylphy is. Nanahoshi wasn't a reincarnation, she was summoned and that summoning caused the teleportation disaster of turning point 1. It seems that the appearance of those summoned or reincarnated is not synchronized with their disappearance from their old world. I'll also mention this as you should know it by now (so not a spoiler). In the first episode of series 1, it was mentioned that 2 of the 3 highschoolers were missing after the accident. The third was found and was not summoned/reincarnated. So it seems likely that the other missing highschooler will appear at some time in MT world (when, is not known as the times aren't synchronized).

Tatersalad666

I love this episode so much. The way they transitioned the language being spoken to differentiate between Japanese and the worlds human language. The way that you can see Sylphie feeling left out and isolated in the background because of the language barrier. Sylphie’s rage at learning that Nanahoshi is probably the reason for the mana disaster and therefore her parents deaths.

Keith Merrington

"...all of you want me to start code geass" - No, less than half want that, but that's FPTP voting for you. Oh well, I'll give it a go, but I don't see how it can be a patch on MT. I hope to be pleasantly surprised :-)

_TKD_

I'm guessing you're referring to a certain thing later in the novels, but it wouldn't be the same rat, right?

FullHeart

Sylphy's perspective from this must be so strange. "Hey Fitz, this girl is from the same place I grew up. That's why we speak a different language ahaha" Sylphy: "UM, NO SHE AINT"

Burezu

One of my favourites! That performance fromSylphie's VA was outstanding. I also loved the details in switching languages for the viewer to understand that they are speaking actual japanese for once.

Joku Jussi

We are more used to the "dense" romance, as a lot of anime uses it heavily. It really is annoying, but you'll just get used to it as long as the anime doesn't focus on romance. Full rom/com animes with this kind of denseness I would drop instantly.

Roxy’s Holy Relic

Big lore drops this episode. Rudy’s PTSD and Sylphiette’s anger towards Nanahoshi were so realistic and well portrayed. Their VAs both did an excellent job this episode. Nanahoshi’s name is also a literal translation: Shizuka - Silent Nana - Seven Hoshi - Star Most importantly, Nanahoshi has the best thighs in the whole verse, I’m willing to die on this hill

Matthew Williams

Just 1 more episode just hold it in for 1 more episode and then all of that nonsense is done and over with.

Macatony

"I can't believe Rudy fainted". Imagine getting killed and having a hole in your chest lol

Fay X84

The story about a certain old messenger and a rat maybe? We have to wait at least 1~3 years though 😢

FinalMasterM

As for the poll, I doubt Monogatari will ever win after people realized that it would be a year long adventure given all the content. A shame, honestly, I just hope we're able to get in some other series like it. Maybe a short romcom between whatever comes after Code Geass?

Roxy’s Holy Relic

Monogatari is my favorite anime so it’s a shame that it didn’t do well in the poll but I can understand why people would be turned off by a year long commitment. I suggested splitting it up so Monogatari “Season 1” Bakemonogatari - 15 episodes Kizumonogatari - 3 movies Nisemonogatari - 11 episodes Nekomonogatari Black - 4 eps would be included in the first vote only. If he broke it down like this it would have done better in the polls. If it was well received he could add the next arcs to the next vote, etc. I think Luke would really enjoy it so hopefully we’ll get to it eventually

Abe J

I think you misunderstood. The mass teleportation she spoke of is the one that took Rudy to the demon land and killed tons of people, not what brought him here originally. Least it seemed like you didn't get it. ... and HELL YES, I loath the whole Fitz thing. It's stupid.

FaerieRose

I’d vote for Bocchi after Geass, for a breather, but then would happily watch Monogatari for a year. Splitting it into three “seasons” based on the novel releases would also be a good idea.

Patrick Jacobsen

when encountered with the most traumatic experience of their entire life, combined with a fulblown panic attack, I imagine that most people would faint.

Othmane Sbi

It is important to note that the way this arc was written is not centric on how sylphie and rudeus will reunite. In fact, Fitz is not presented as sylphie but only as new character. So you are not waiting on the reveal and you are more intreseted in the daily life of rudeus. This is something that would have been hard to do in the anime because, as oblivious rudeus is, you can't expect to present Fitz as a new character and the audience wont know it is sylphie

nikum

It's not, but I guess most people are too dense to get it ... Please try to understand what the fuck the author is doing by not making them instantly recognise each other, why does Rudy have ED? what is he missing when it comes to relationships and how might Fitz help him understand that?

Lusanagi17

I dont think he misunderstood. He used the word "summoning" and "reincarnation" interchangeably a lot but I think he was talking about how Rudy's death coincided with Nanahoshi's summon in the real world but they reached this world at different times

dpolaristar

Why are you shaming Rudy for having justified PTSD remembering one of the worst days of his life from a guy that absolutely bodied him.

nikum

Imagine getting PTSD from remembering the time someone literally punched a hole through your solar plexus ... smh Rudy is such a wuss.

Nicolas Castro

When Rudy faints after seeing Nanahoshi, on the LN when he wakes up, he feels disappointed in himself since he trained his body to at least be able to run away from Orsted if he found him again, but when he sees Nanahoshi he couldn't even run away since his legs only failed him and he fell every time he tried to stand up. It's not a matter of physical strength, it's mental, Rudy is terrified that he was practically killed at that time and this led him to have a trauma, and this caused him a post-traumatic stress attack when he remembered when he was attacked.

Cédric Michaud

I agree, the guy has one of the most normal human reaction ever, traumatic fear because he see someone that accompanied the one that almost killed him (Orsted) and Luke reacts like he wouldn't react the same...

Damian

Possibly one of my top 3 episodes for Mushoku Tensei. From how faithful it is to the novel. To how amazing the VAs did in it. Rudy's scene with him losing composure to Shylpie's anger bursting after Nanahoshi's bad explanation. Also can't blame Rudy for reacting that way, he did lose is life, technically. Even if Orsted did bring him back because Nanahoshi asked to, I think anyone would react that way. (Just a little side note) I do have to say Nanahoshi is one of my favorite characters.

brotato 96

If you think Rudeus is not an anomaly for this world because he was born here, just remember the conversation between him and Orsted. Orsted basically said he does not know Rudeus, He knew Eris, Ruijerd and even when Rudeus said he is Paul Greyrat's son, Orsted told him that Paul does not have a son but only 2 daughters.

dpolaristar

Funny how in the Re:Zero rewatch he gives Subaru way more slack and says he has a very human reaction, but doesn't do the same for Rudy who does NOT have a time loop ability to revive so death is a much bigger deal for him.

Rob

Yup he didn't misunderstand, he summerised the situation quite well afterwards.

Rob

"It's quite unique in Isekai" Well... something similar happened at the begining of "That time I got reincarnated as a Slime" if you think of it ! (Spoiler : Rimuru, reincarnated from our world, crossing paths with a girl that got summoned from our world)

MASUCAULNE

Well it's not unique because of what you see here, it's unique because this is just the start, it's not goofy or silly or a power fantasy, its' logical and it's about the characters not the fights

Rob

I'm not quite sure this has something to do with what I said but other than that yeah, I agree. It's just that Luke's statement was "it's rare in Isekai that an other character (appart from the MC) gets reincarnated/summoned". Event that already occured in two of the few isekai he's watched !

GTB

Now you should watch the very beginning of the first episode again ;). To be clear, Sylphie has several reasons for not revealing her identity. One of them is that she's forbidden to reveal her true identity. That's why, in this episode, Ariel explicitly says she allows Sylphie to do it with Rudeus. Then, another reason is that she fears she's been forgotten/that Rudeus no longer particularly cares for her. This is culturally consistent (and thematically for this arc). I insist on the importance of the culture from which a work comes. "Imagine if you knew these people. Imagine you're in this situation." Again, imagine that a British and a Japanese don't have the same culture and social codes... Imagine that over 95% of Japanese/Westerner couples fail quickly, due to differences in behavior and social codes. Once again, a work is understood through the prism of the culture from which it springs. And in Japanese culture, it's VERY impolite to meddle in someone else's private affairs without their open permission. And even with permission, it's best to be minimally intrusive. And seriously, is it any wonder that a depressive 15-year-old has PTSD from the day he was murdered at 13 by chest perforation? We're not in Jujutsu Kaisen or other Nekketsu here...In real life, I've seen people have anxiety attacks (with hyperventilation leading to fainting) for much, much less than that.

Binbou

It's so entirely irrelevant, but it's a Japanese language fun fact. Her name in this world is Silent Sevenstar. And her Japanese name is Shizuka Nanahoshi. Shizuka Nanahoshi literally translated is Silent Sevenstar. She kept her name

Renaud Nadeau

Be patient Luke, be patient hahaha

Arcade'owy Łowca

Lemme just spoonfeed this to you, this knowledge is outside anime, and not gonna ruin it any way. Sunglasses of the Rescuer A sunglasses allowing the face to remain hidden. Who do you think has those glasses and wears them all the time?

Nodoss

Thats right its Silphy alias Fitts, and the White hair its no just dye in, it litteraly become White as snow because of using literaly all of her Mana when teleported to the castle

Arctic

Him just getting continuously angrier at Rudy is so fun lol.

Matt Tucker

He was gone from home for three years, before the Teleportation Accident. She has low self confidence, so assumes he may be talking about someone else. She would rather leave it in limbo than confirm one way or the other if he remembers her. It would break her if he forgot.

ItZ OWL

your reactions to sylphy are very similar to mine and i find that hilarious

Kyle DeForest

Next 3 episodes are the payoff you've been waiting for. Just hang in there!

Paul

I hope you can watch 10, 11 and 12 next weekend. Even the titles of the episodes are all part of the same sentence tying them together. It would suck for you and us to separate episodes 11 and 12, they are better watched together.

Yako

When Rudy fainted he was same disappointed as you, he trained every day to at least could survive another encounter with Orsted, but the mental training is not a joke, he was so terrified of something that literally kill him, so I can understand The part when I said he was disappointed of himself is from the novel, but the anime didn’t put it maybe for time issues

Zepher

Watch both 11 and 12 together next week.

Renaud Nadeau

Next week will drive him up a wall if he only watches episodes 10 and 11 and leaves 12 till the following week 🤣

BRUNO Marques

Monogatari should be broken up between other shows. It's a bit dense to watch it all in one go imo. Unfortunately, Luke may struggle remembering things. Also, he will 100% blur whole episodes. Not sure he can handle the lewd when it turns up.

Chris Gama

I think Sylvie is thinking that even if Rudy does admit to remembering her as a kid, that he might not return the feelings that she has for him. That would be understandable. I can't wait till next week though!

Chris Gama

I mean, yeah you can train yourself all you want, but when you come face to face with someone associated with somebody that literally killed you easily, that is some trauma that you can't just mentally get over. He just had a panic attack, something not everybody can control. It just happens. As you said he was so terrified for his life once again.

Obscuremango

Around this time, Rudy took a test to do a earth saint magic. Duststorm, he talked to the deputy principal Jinius and said he could call himself a earth empower because of the power of his rock bullet, as only emporer level attacks can penetrate badigadis skin. But Rudy chose not to as to not attract any unwanted attention as normally you only call yourself that when you can cast a spell from that tier. Rock bullet is a low level spell, no one in the world has ever thought to make it more powerful with more mana, so Rudy alone has made a simple spell so much more deadly, badigadi last episode in the book talked to Rudy and told him to hit him with the same attack that grazed Orsted the dragon god. So ye, Rudy is lot more powerful than he thought, This episode was amazing and really made us think. Loved how they swapped between languages made up for this world

Obscuremango

Good to hear the orsted OST again when meeting nanahoshi

BornOfOsiris

I'm very disappointed in you for being harsh on Rudy right off the bat. Downplaying PTSD is really insensitive

Keith Merrington

Just thought of something... The summoning of Nanahosi (and, presumably, the other highschool dude who is yet to appear) caused the teleportation disaster. The summoning also (presumably by accident) allowed the dying Rudy's soul to transmigrate to MT world and be reincarnated. So poor old Rudy has been hit twice by the same summoning event.

Keith Merrington

The only criticism I have is that Sylphy calmed down almost instantly after Rudy said that Nanahoshi was a victim too. A slower come down would have been more natural. Some great voice acting though.

Keith Merrington

And presumably wore a mask because (being a summoned person) her facial features are Asian, whereas most MT world people look European.

Felipe

So you dislike when Rudy has a realistic reaction, but you like when Subaru has one. Rudeous, who demonstrated insane power on several occasions, is a disappointment, but Subaru, who is the weakest and can die as much as he likes, is cool. Also, one annoying thing happens in Mushuko, and you can't get over it, but in Re: Zero, it gets brushed over quickly. Something strange is happening here.

Calja630

I mean Rudy and Sylphie getting together and what not has been and is a complete side story IMO until the story/author decides to pull it in. Yeah its a tease but you know its gonna so I really don't get why you and a lot of people go so crazy about rushing it. The story is progressing other things are still happening and when its time they to will come together. You have seemed (since the start of the school ark) more obsessed with this than Rudy is to get a hard on. Idk maybe I am just weirdo but I read the novels and don't remember getting mad it feels like a really minor thing to focus on while the story is setting up a bunch of stuff and bringing together new and old characters. Still happy for the reaction tho!

FabioSpar

20:14 Idk if the author changed it in the light novel, but the timelines stuff was kinda messy as far as I remember from the webnovel. I won't elaborate on that (not that I could, since I've read that 3y+ ago so my memory is vague), but it should be explained in the last season in like... 2028 or something

FabioSpar

26:39 Actually there are some isekais like that too. There are some where multiple people get summoned together, like Arifureta. And there are others with summoned and teleported people, like Mushoku and Spirit Chronicles

josh

The way i always thought the time disparity between Rudy and Nanahoshi's appearance in the world is about mass. Rudy was dead, so only his soul got teleported, very minimal, where as Nanahoshi was a whole ass person. I think that weird sphere thing that Rudy and Eris' grandpa saw in season one was the world struggling to drag her into itself from their world. Then when it succeeded the all the released energy had nowhere else to go so exploded outward, and since that energy was being used for a teleportation when it got dispersed it just teleported everything ti touched around randomly. just a theory

Nicolas Castro

I think that for several chapters, Luke just doesn't like the character of Rudeus anymore and doesn't bother to see if it develops coherently, he just sees the criticism of the character even if it's something justified for the story.

draggo

I just assumed that in summoning someone from a different world, since in other fiction it could mean you’re pulling someone through space and time anyway, you could plop that person anywhere in the timeline that suited you. If that’s not the case, however, maybe the difference in timing is a clue related to the disaster? That could be interesting. Also, yes it was driving me crazy that that moment didn't clue Rudeus in lol

dartcp

No, this is not the first time in an Isekai that you see several people from one world. In addition to Rimuru, Slime also included the children, his Selen relative, where he got the body from, the guy from the guild in the big city and also the holy sword maiden against them He fought so hard. Almost all of them (except one of the children) came from Japan And in Konusuba that is the main reason that people from Earth are sent to the Konosuba world and he is not the only one/first he even meets one

dartcp

pure speculation, I only saw the anime. I wouldn't say that Rudi is part of the world just because he was born because the dragon god, when he met Rudi on the snow mountain, said: Who are you? Paul only has two daughters and no son. This implies that the dragon god knows about all living creatures in the world and since he hasn't "seen" Rudi, at least Rudi is not as part of this world as the others

Haruto

Nahhh. Code Geass is up there. Its a good replacement for mushoku.

Flutter0Shy

Imagine if it were like some BlazBlue moment thing where they repeat the events thousands of times until "one certain character" suddenly exists and makes the wheel of fate turn further

Zero2Antihero

What's really neat about this episode (and often lost on us newcomers) is that for the time this was written, Silent Nanahoshi here fit the traditional Isekai protagonist mold *perfectly,* but instead she arrives late to the story and becomes a foil for Rudeus. The author has successfully subverted the traditional meta of the genre and now decides to acknowledge it with Nanahoshi in a way that powerfully demonstrates the contrast between these characters. And I think that's just brilliant! (What I mean by the "traditional meta" is quickly summarized below). From what I understand, in the early 2000's and prior, Isekai protagonists were generally average people from our world dropped in a strange land who are just trying to get back home. It was sort of like "fish-out-of-water fantasy" and the core story was about how the journey home changes them. (Consider "The Neverending Story" as an near-parallel). Mushoku Tensei kicked off somewhere in the first or second generation of Isekai popularizing this "new lease on life" model.

Ron Farmer

Look at Luke, the Isekai authority 😁 nah man, there are lots that have multiple people getting whisked away. "So I'm a Spider, So What" being one of my favourites with that setting. Which I hope you'll one day watch. I'd love to see it's logic and twists make a muddle of your brain.

Visoth

The first conversation Rudeus had with Fitz regarding what hes up to was a bit different in the novel. He merely said "I am looking for someone." he didn't refer to that someone as a friend, family or whatever. So it didn't clue in to Sylphie it was her he was looking for. The novel handled the entire thing between Rudeus & Fitz different. In the novels, it wasn't fully clear who Fitz was. Even though a lot of things pointed to him being Sylphie, there were just as many things that made that impossible. For example, Sylphie and "Fitz" being in the same room together, holding a conversation. To most readers, that would immediately discredit any theories that they are the same person. But that was a trick made by the author to fool us, and there was a reason for that behind the page. So our first experience with this arc in the novel was more of a mystery. Like "who is this person and why are they so similar to Sylphie?" rather than "Omg just tell him you're Sylphie already!"

Visoth

It's actually King level. King level spells and attacks and above can only pierce Badigadi's defenses. So Eris from season 1 wouldn't even be able to touch Badigadi. Really puts into perspective how powerful Rudeus spells are. If someone like Ghislaine would struggle to hurt Badigadi, and yet Rudeus obliterated him.

yorozuyapetel

that explains a lot as to why a LN reader guy i know kept hyping up this season so much, cause without that annoying blueballs plotline it would've been really good imo

Edward Of DOOM

I'm naming my next MMO character 'Grog-Neck the Barbarian'. And i'll be a sorcerer.

Nathan McCabe

Konosuba has multiple reincarnations. And the dead mad scientist who got his power from the goddess Aqua and created a bunch of crazy stuff.
