BasSini King

Its already 1:33 am here and i need to wake up early tommorow for class but im here still waiting for re zero reaction

arksaber96

She not saving the world. She just want to keep the promise madoka made that to stop madoka from turning to magical girl. If not about the promise, she want to destroy the world with madoka when they both gonna turn into witch before the promise made.

Some0neElse

about the unifurms... theres a whole kink around japanese school uniforms (sailor uniforms), PE uniforms and swimsuits.... in some anime its used as a form of fan service. Also in anime names play major role in characters. F.e. Homura's first name means Bright or beauty. Also if we take AoT the name Eren Yeager is composed of Eren (Turkish) which can translate as "saint" and Yeager (German) that means "hunter"

FaerieRose

For Homura, everything is about Madoka. She doesn’t care about the rest of the world.

Chlebek Razowy

A very great detail about this episode is how the grief seed Madoka used on Homura is the one they got after defeating Witch Sayaka. This can be verified by looking at the pattern on it, as all witches have their own unique grief seed designs.

Seith

From what I understand a Magical girl can only turn into a witch when her soul gem turns dark, when a magical girl dies (soul gem gets destroyed) she just dies and nothing more happens. But please correct me if I'm wrong, without spoiling.

Obscuremango

This is my favourite episode. I can't wait for the next episode, your gonna love it too

ninety90

Yesss! the lyrics of the OP are sang from homura's perspective!

meshi

its been a long time since I watched the anime so it may be incorrect but the way I think about it is if there are no more witches there are no more grief seeds meaning the magical girls can't clean their soul gem so they will eventually become witches even if they didn't die and killed all the witches.

Shadow

it's this episode that reveals how truly tragic the opening is

Jason Gentry

The reason Madoka turns into a witch after beating Walpurgisnaucht is because of how much magical energy it takes for her to defeat the witch. As you see in the previous times, each time they win, one or both of their gems is practically pure black. The darkness creeps in more and more as you use magical power till you can't reverse it due to not having a grief seed or the darkness has turned you into a cynical person who curses the world and thus becomes a witch. Walpurgisnaucht is so powerful that even one shooting it like Madoka did expelled all of her magic and thus sped up her becoming a witch.

Keith Merrington

Madoka used up all her magic when destroying the Walpurgisnacht witch. This darkened her soul gem enough to make her into an even stronger witch. If she had died then she wouldn't have become a witch.

Guillaume Bergeron

I figure that Madoka became a witch immediately after defeating Walpurgisnacht in one shot because she expanded so much magic in that one shot that her Soul Gem became a Grief Seed right away.

mjaomjao2

You turn into a witch when your soul gem gets tainted. It slowly gets tainted everytime you use magic which is why they need to collect grief seeds to purify themselves. The tainting also seems to accelerate when experiencing negative emotions but it could also be the other way around that you experience negative emotions more as it gets tainted. I'm unsure about that part.

Izayoi Sakamaki

To add. From my understanding the soul gem can get dark by using magic or from negative emotions.

Louispul5

The wishes are meant to give you a reason to not give in to negative emotions and become a witch. But if that motivation to keep going stops... Sayaka wished to heal her boyfriend so they can live happily ever after. But that didn't happen, did it? So she lost all hope and gave up. If Madoka wishes to defeat Walpugisnacht, and then she does, what's left?

StrykerEvol

Correct. But to add. They become witches, the moment the corruption of their soul reaches it's peak. The Gem just mirrors the level of corruption by getting darker. Which is also why Sayaka started to become more and more insane and depressed at the end. She didn't cleanse her gem, thus leaving her soul vulnerable for a much faster corruption. Even Homura started becoming more corrupted, talking about destroying the world together with Madoka. If it wasn't for Madoka cleansing Homura's soul with Sayaka's Grief Seed, she would have also transformed.

Bård Fredrikson

The intro song is really a song about Homura, indeed.

StrykerEvol

To stop the cycle completely, the last Magical Girl would need to destroy her own gem after eradicating everyone else. Like Mami tried after realizing that Homura wasn't lying about the birth of witches. But that is a huge price to pay and wouldn't stop Kyubey from simply finding other ways to contract new magical girls, thus creating new witches along the way. Wont say more in case Luke reads this.

Zoe Brown

This was a treat to watch, through and through :) "Homura feels like the main character." ;)

IvanBV

The op is at the end cause it's symbolise the start of the current loop

FinalMasterM

Some history about this anime and people I've introduced (or in this case re-introduced) to anime. I worked with a guy who "grew out" of anime because felt it was all fighting and fanservice. So I asked him to watch this series with me on day and after this episode he was crying.

Default

You need to react to Oshakashama by RADWIMPS

Pyzlnar

The best thing about this is that if you ever go back and watch it again with this context. Everytime you see Homura being "angry" you'll notice it's not anger, it's pain. She bites her lips, twists away, doing her absolute best to not say too much to keep Madoka from making a contract.

Von Yoosten

Kyubey didn't recognize Homura because she never made her Contract in any of the Timelines afterwards

Emilis2023

You had asked before why at times Homura seems to ignore Kyubey but other times she kills him on site. There's good reason to believe there were many many cycles not shown between some of these and she's probably memorized by now exactly which points or events are likely to cause Madoka to form a contract and when it's more helpful to leave Kyubey around for the sake of how the other girls see her.

Harley Burnie

19:40 Madoka's wail of heartbreak, after having to kill Mami to protect Homura....I feel it EVERY time. I mean...this is a FOURTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL, and the sweetest, most innocent one, and she felt forced to murder someone she loved. One of the darkest animes, even if that is only because of how light, bright, and sweet it seems in the beginning. If you compare the depth these girls fall, verses all of the edgy af animes out there, it's no contest.

Harley Burnie

Madoka Magicka NAILS the "WTF Reveal" with episode 3, 6, 9, 10, and 12. I am so glad you reacted to this series, Luke.

Harley Burnie

Yeeeaaah, good shot. Homura seems so pissed and unapproachable before, but as of this episode, you get to see the horrific sorrow and fear of the living hell she is totally committed to, for her love of Madoka.

Harley Burnie

27:0 Madoka needed to use so damn much magic to take down Walpurgisnacht with the one shot, her Soul Gem ended up totally balck with using so much magic. It was explained mulitple times because of Sayaka,a dn even from the beginning, that using magic darkened their Soul Gems. Once they go black, their magic becomes curses. Thus, Greatest Magical Girl - magic + hate ->Most Diabolical Witch = Apocalypse.

Harley Burnie

Someone had to say this by now, but, just in case, Luke, Homura spent around 12 years worth of her time to rewind, try, rewind, try over and over. Mentally, Homura would be around 25-26 years old by the start of this season. The fact that she hadn't ended up stuck in that hospital, drooling and screaming at some point, is a showing of unspeakable resilience and love and terror.

Karen Porter

walpurgisnacht references The Night of the Witches where the witches meet for a large gathering on a mountain. It's german folklore. That Time I got Reincarnated As a Slime also had "Walpurgis" which was the meeting between all of the demon lords if you recall.

Coobie : What is the one wish that will make your soul gem shine? Me : I just want Homura to be happy T_T Coobie : do i look like a miracle worker ?

I somehow managed to read this comment while it's 1:33 am where I live while the comment was 6 hours old

The voice acting in this episode is just incredible. You can really hear all the pain, sorrow and despair in their voices when all the bad things happen. Madoka's scream when killing Mami, her voice when dying in pain asking not to become a witch... Homura's gut wrenching screams... It just really stood out to me. Probably one of the best I can think of right now out of all the shows I've seen so far. This is such a good episode. And I can say that some of the questions you asked will be answered in the next episodes, so just wait and see xD But yeah, Homura does feel like the traditional "real main character" here.

JOSHUA A STERRETT

"Homura's doing all of this to stop the end of the world." Not quite. The rest of the world can hang for all she cares. The one and only thing she cares about is saving Madoka. On another note, Madoka turned into a witch in that last timeline because she used so much power in that one shot that that one shot was enough to darken her soul gem enough to corrupt it into a grief seed.

Edward Of DOOM

I pushed this anime as hard as I could for you to watch, Luke. Now I look back and wonder, did this ruin the magical girl genre for you? Going from this to Sailor Moon or Tokyo Mew Mew.... I knew how good it was, but not every magical girl show is like this one. Please keep that in mind, moving forward.

charlymoon

For your information Luke, the ost composer for this series is Yuki Kajiura, which is the same composer that worked on Fate Zero, I'm sure that knowing that you could be able to identify the similarities from time to time. But that's not all this series have in common, they also share the same author: Gen Urobuchi

ArtKi

This episode is close enough to Re:Zero to count it.

ArtKi

You say Homura may as well be the main character. did you know she was Natsuki Subaru's sister? (not really but she might as well be. They should get together and strategize. )

Mike Baker

Exactly! This is was I’m always afraid of. Madoka Magica is objectively one of the best anime ever made, and everyone should watch it at some point. But it should never be someone’s first magical girl anime if that can be helped. It takes all the core tropes of a good magical girl show and twists them all in beautifully horrific ways. Someone who doesn’t know those tropes will still enjoy the series, but I always doubt that they are able to enjoy it fully. I really wanted for Luke to watch at least an episode or two of another show before starting this one (Nanoha is not the best magical girl show, but is short enough to be an easy binge and covers most of the tropes). Unfortunately a lot of the other commenters were too impatient (selfish?) to let that happen.

Techno Chemist

This episode is why Homura is my favorite character

dg_2drunk

The lyrics literally tell the story from Homura's perspective, that's mor than just symbolism. Too bad he never bothers with reading any of those.

Pete Bickmore

As the famous saying goes: HOMURA DID NOTHING WRONG

Animeguy1101

I think you should react to the original Japanese Digimon openings. Because that’s just the kind of curveball an anime quiz would do to make sure you get a least one of them wrong. I made playlist for all the Digimon Japanese openings so you don’t miss any. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlHvRFmrcTI9o6BQf_aR9gDRrlUiKZX6P

Hængeklumpen

banger of a episode and a reaction :)

Sam 2003

Thank you, I was just about to comment this exact thing. Really important to know.

Subby

where is the aot episode? its uploaded to youtube but its not here

Colm Barry

Madoka is an adorable McGuffin in Homura's story

Ttsukasa

ABSOLUTELY NOT, IF THAT EVER HAPPENED THE AMOUNT OF SUFFERING WOULD FLOOD THE WORLD IN TEARS AND WE'D ALL DROWN.

Ttsukasa

And I think you should stop spamming dude, get a life, how many times must you copy paste spammy comments as if you believe the reactor can't read or comprehend the first 3 times?

AchmodinIV SWE

Homura made the contract in the future and went back in time, so there is no reason for Kyubey to recognize her

c zhou

You missed the opening at the end (but many people do). If you read the lyrics, it's essentially an internal monologue of Homura and her struggle to save Madoka through many time loops..

Vex Valor

The opening is at the end in this episode because these events happened before the first episode. We are now caught up to where Homura was in the first episode so that's why the opening theme now plays. The ending theme plays during the fight because that is the end of that timeline.

AG

If Homura saves Madoka, she'll save the world. But her main motivation is Madoka. She'd be in this time-loop even if Madoka was a normal girl and failing to save her would have no greater consequences.
