I've been so excited for this! Have you heard about the shorts, Re:ZERO ~Starting Break Time From Zero~? Very lighthearted, very cartoony style (what they call "chibi"). Animated by the studio that would go on to make Isekai Quartet (since you recently reacted to those openings). Only 11 shorts, two-minutes each. They originally aired after each of the first 11 episodes (original episodes, not Director's Cut). They cover small scenes and lore from the novels that were cut from the anime for time/pacing. They are absolutely NOT required viewing, but if you like Re:ZERO enough, you might want to check them out at some point. They're available on Crunchyroll. I've only ever seen one reactor cover them, so I think a lot of people might not even know about them. Just wanted to let you know they exist! Have fun on your Re:ZERO journey!

The biggest difference between the directors cut and the original is that the directors cut has double length episodes by combining two episodes into one. Also touched up visuals and slightly better dialogue timing. It works really well for the pacing except for one episode. Episode 10 of the directors cut should've been split differently imo. The first half of the episode really needs some time to sink in before the second half plays. I would suggest pausing at the halfway point of episode 10 to talk about it a bit.

Here we go :D As a little tip (no spoiler) which you already did very well this episode: Look and try to remember details or stuff that "seems" off. The author loves to sprinkle in little details and hints that can become more important later on in the show. You already catched one with "Satella" giving her name to subaru and that something seemed off with it. Some details are smaller some are bigger, some will be mentioned in smaller ways later on and some have huge implications for the future of the show. So trust your gut instict if something feels off, etc. and try to remember ^^ Also a really interesting thing with this show. You already guessed that by the reactions of those other people only Subaru seems to remember what happened in a previous "loop" as you called it. See how people react differently based on the first impression Subaru makes on them? The Appa guy for example was pretty rude at first because Subaru was broke and he did not want him to scare away his customers, etc. But later on when Subaru seemed to feel really unwell and passed out the appa guy seemed worried about him and tried to help him. You also noticed that he was quite different at this point. Which can get quite interesting if you think about it that the other people might have a different impression or behave differently at different "first impressions" So in this "loop" "satella" seems very angry towards Subaru since he apparently called her by the name of the witch of envy. However Subaru knows a completely different side of her and tries to communicate with her based on his understanding, which if we assume as you stated that its a different loop did not happen. It is actually funny to hear you say you love Subaru already! :D The majority of people that actually dislike this anime say that they just cannot stand Subaru as a main character :D Re Zero breaks down the tropes of Isekais a little bit. You saw this with his commentary about Isekai worlds and the typical "rules" and that he said this will be my first event to produce magic, etc. Also remember that subaru is a shut in that is obsessed with mangas, etc. You saw him browsing them in the store aswell. And with him talking about how typical isekais work you can assume that he is an anime/manga nerd and knows how this stuff "usually" happens. This makes him far less shocked about the fact he got isekaid because he knows exactly what that is.

Do directors cut only if you don't cut episodes into parts. It is very well paced and contains small extra bits. If you are thinking of cutting episodes in half, then don't do the directors cut.

The main female character is voiced by Rie Takahashi. You know her primarily as Megumin from KonoSuba. Also as Yuzuhira from Hells Paradise and Ai Hoshino from Oshi no Ko. There are basically two ways to approach the topic mentioned at the beginning, how to get into an Isekai, another world: The reincarnation and the summoning. The former is the case with “The Eminence in Shadows” and “Mushoku Tensei”. In the other case, you are summoned as the (predicted) savior of the world as part of a magical ritual. One of those, which isn't a spoiler so far, is The Rising of the Shield Hero. But it can also be the case here that someone is simply transported to the other world and only finds out who it was and what the reason for it is as the story progresses. Like in KonoSuba, where the main character dies in our world but is so easily brought to the other world, it's more of a summoning than a reincarnation.

Love this series. Hope you enjoy the ride! I would suggest you do take a moment to appreciate the backgrounds while you're watching. For a series with a lot of dialogue they do take the time to give interesting backgrounds and shots throughout the series.

Yes, Subaru can kick ass, but only in a fist-fight. Yes, he´s a shut-in, but he said earlier in the first iteration of the scene, that he is also training a lot, even though he only goes out if it´s really needed. So while he doesn´t really have any magic powers or alike, he is physically quite built up. nothing extraordinary, but also not extremely weak either (you could say, he´s basically at the level of an athlete, at least somewhere around that, but far weaker than an average knight, and even weaker than any magic-user probably)

The reason you should *not* watch the DC after this episode is that, since the episodes are twice as long, there's twice as much stuff going on and it would be hard to react well after 40 minutes of madness. The DC is fine, probably the best choice, simply for watching. The TV cut is better for reactors. ESPECIALLY if you do post episode commentary. Are you going to remember what happened in minute 5 after minute 35 slaps you in the face? --------- 19:19 I forgot about all the happy music in the first episode. Ah, that won't be a problem in the future. heh -------- 20:20 Almost NOBODY catches Puck's reaction to "my name is Satella" Good job! -------- 37:44 "It gets very dark.." Keep being vigilant this is VERY HEAVY mystery genre story and there is a lot of small hints thrown everywhere.

if i had to say, a isekai where the protagonists are background characters is Grimgar. They are just dudes trying to survive barely, killing goblins and kobolds, and like any regular human being, they are pretty bad at the killing thing with just swords and magic.

My favorite anime of all time! Honestly you can't go wrong with either the original or the Director's cut, but the best looking will probably be DC. I believe that it gets rid of some of the really heavy censoring that the original had and adds new content, even if it is only a little bit. I'll watch either way so I'd just go with whatever you personally feel is easier.

The Directors cut cuts down on the number of episodes by basically pairing up episodes into double features for 13 episodes instead of the original 26 while adding a few cinematic changes that the director wanted. Will you be watching the second season the same way? Pair episodes up(1&2, 3&4), or watch them all separately for the 25 episodes in season 2?

He definitely has his flaws, but I never got to the point where I hated him personally. It really just comes down to whether or not you're able to understand that he isn't a one dimensional perfect character that can do no wrong. While he did have his moments, I can confidently say I love how the anime/novel portray him as a human rather than just a character all the way through.

I don't think I realized until this viewing how much of a nervous motormouth Emilia is. Such an interesting choice for a character quirk on somebody who is trying to project confidence, impatience, and seriousness. SOLID characterization that helps humanize her to the audience, even when female leads of this archetype tend toward the virtuous, flawless heroine type. One of the things that really makes this series stand out in the genre is how every character is just a person with flaws, wants, and needs, and every action is the result of a tug-of-war between those three motivations.

I cant say i hate him, but accounting for all his pluses and minuses (up to latest anime season), he definitely ends up on the minus for me. It's not about OP (his power IS OP imo... ) but i really dislike his mentality. There's not alot of time i watch an anime and felt.... disappointed for a MC. Only overlooking his shortfall for the really cool concept and story. He is definitely the weak link in the anime.

@seansky Fully disagree, Subaru is maybe one of the best ever made MC for a fictional story like this. The most overused and boring overpowered MC's are such bad written characters. Subaru's own personality is what makes Re:Zero such amazing genius of a story. I am really certain why people hate on him is their not understanding or lack of empathy for struggles he has to go through and his willpower that is his anime power.

@Thamor I agree with you. I'd even go as far as to say Subaru is my favorite anime character of all time. Don't get me wrong, I can understand why people might have a hard time liking him. However, I think he is one of the best written characters in a long time, probably not THE best objectively, but number one for me.

I think there should be a little emphasis on the "like" part. I doubt he meant that he thought they would look exactly like puck and it isn't abnormal to think that the lesser spirits would have a smaller, but similar appearance. A lot of anime and other media tend to make them have more of a fairy-like or animal-like appearance. It isn't often that you just see floating orbs for fantasy spirits, not that there is anything wrong with it.

Nah i can understand why people dont like him, sure he has alot of energy and positivity which is a great mc trait. But his greatest flaw is his stupidity and spatial awareness. And i by spatial awareness I specifically mean he has no idea what anyone is ever thinking, dude cant get a hint which technically also alludes to his stupidity, but his inability to learn and reconcile the past events in most of his experiences is extremely frustrating. He creates most of the problems he's in and thats why people hate him, he's a detriment to himself and others around him, he feels like a bad luck charm but never tries to make a situation better.

Hating subaru i think can be a very valid opinion to most people. I dislike him as a main character only because he creates most of his problems, and he never learns from his mistakes its only very rarely he'll use a past timeline to benefit the present, which is stupid. So it isnt the way he acts or carries himself is the problem, its simply the fact that he's stupid.

About subaru's character. You'll have people who like him, people who despise him, and people like me who prefer to ignore him as a main character, obviously the plot revolves around him, but thats why i wish to ignore him. I wont get into spoilers, but i simply feel like he's a bad luck charm to his world because he's very stupid. Im not asking for an OP main character and im not asking for him to do much, but as far as a main character goes, he ends up creating his own problems and then continues to never learn from them because he's just stupid. So no i dont hate him, but he's very frustrating. If the situations he was in actually caused him "trauma" he would do everything to avoid those situations and yet.... but yeah that's basically subaru and the community's thoughts on him.

I have to disagree. The biggest thing the show has going for it is his development. It's all about his growth and how he spurs on everything by improving himself as a person. Compare him from the beginning of season 1 to the end of season 2 or god forbid end of arc 6. Completely different person by comparison. Also as for him creating his own problems, yeah bro he's human. He's arrogant, naive and very selfish, but that also contrasts his compassion, willingness to do whatever to save everyone and as of late, his self awareness being on full display, especially on later arcs where he really needs to improve as a person. There's a reason the series ultimate theme is something along the line of learning to love yourself. The way I see it is that Subaru is an amazing character BECAUSE he's flawed in all these ways. He's human. That's why Reinhard exists, to act as a foil to Subaru and show him what the "hero" Subaru wishes he was looks like. Lastly for Subaru being a bad luck charm for his world feels like it ignores the fact that if he wasn't here, the whole world would be boned. Ironically through that suffering and the pain he actually kept the world together.

dont spread misinfomation, there is not more blood, only 1 single scene was changed with one small addition to it, and there is only 1 single brand new scene that is right at the end, which plays at the start of season 2 anyway

(Please Read Luke) Directors cut is fine EXCEPT FOR EPISODE 9!!! Please instead of watching episode 9, watch episode 16 and 17 of the original (same content). The directors cut removes the ending song during one of the most memorable scenes of the show IMO, and the scene is MASSIVELY downgraded without it, seriously you need to see the original version of this one scene! If you want the absolute best experience, watch the directors cut Episode 1-8, then 16+17 of the original, then continue directors cut till the end

It's the blue ray version, which doesnt censor the blood as much as the one that aired on TV originally. It is real. I'm not gonna say which part as Luke reads the comments. But it's in a few episodes it'll show it. I've seen each bit when it's side by side normal Vers to director cut which looks the same as the blu ray

The original release of season 1 of the show was roughly 20 min episodes for 25 episodes where the director's cut turns it into 13 episodes at roughly 40 mins an episode. Now im not complaining because that means i get twice as much of this show every week but thought you would like to know.

Honestly, Subaru is one of my all time favorite MCs, so glad you like him too. The line you made "he's us" is how I've always felt about him haha. He's a super relatable character for being a nerdy gamer and he's just a decent human being. He's also a very determined person who is kind of funny and goofy. He's such a "normal" everyday person IMO and that's why I like him so much. This has been the reaction series I've been most excited for (along with 86) as this is one of my top 3 animes. I can't wait to watch the others!

I don't want to get into it because of spoilers but besides the "a lot of energy and positivity"-part you brought up in another comment I think nothing you said describes his character accurately at all. I guess some people just don't care to see growth in a main character. I was never aware that Subaru was actually looked at this way by a portion of the fan base but after what happened with Rudeus in Mushoku Tensei I shouldn't be surprised. I agree with everything Bryant said about Subaru though.
