the reason homura went to kill kyubi in the first episode was to prevent madoka from ever interacting with kyubi in the first place but now that they met theres no point to killing it

Little bit of extra language context here. Japanese for “witch” is written with the characters for “magic” and “female”. Notice the similarity to “magical girl.”

It's true that there is a lot of detail in this world for such a short anime, but all of the answers to your questions are found within it. In this episode alone, we answered three of your questions: "Is Homura willing to kill Kyubei or not?" "If Homura was willing to kill Kyubei, why doesn't she?" and "Is Homura from the future?" (I remember you theorizing about that in a previous reaction, and what do you know, you were right! Or at least Kyubei agrees with your theory. Good job!)

The thing that Kyubey said at the end is a pun in Japanese. The word for "witch" is "majo" (魔女). The term for "magical girl" is "mahou shoujo" (with shoujo = girl) (魔法少女). "Majo" is made up of the first and last characters of "mahou shoujo". That may help make what Kyubey said make more sense.

More specifically: Witch (魔女) uses the characters for "Magic" (魔) and "Woman" (女) Magical girl (魔法少女) uses the words magic (魔法) (magic-methods) and girl (少女) (few-woman: woman of few years) This usage of "close enough but not super obvious" is also why the reveal works on Japanese as well.

There are better explanations for Homura and her treatment of Kyubei but they need some reveals later to work. Maybe by the time you get to that episode you'll piece it together yourself.

Lots of great questions that will be getting answers. There are a number of shows that are able to do a lot with only 12 episodes and Madoka is perhaps the best at it. Another show that packs a ton into just 12 episodes and is a complete story is Death Parade. I highly recommend watching it at some point.

Kyubei is saying a girl is the temporary phase before transitioning into a woman. Likewise a magical girl is the temporary phase before transitioning into a witch.

Even though I watched the first season of magia record accidentally before this, I was still shocked by the twist. Even though I knew already it stung and I truly felt surprise and anger. I didn’t feel that in magia.

Just to add a little light to the whole "killing Kyubey plan", in episode 2 Sayaka and Madoka confront Homura, and Sayaka asks her if she came to pick up where she had left off (i. e. trying to kill Kyubey, as seen in episode 1), and Homura answers that no, there is no meaning, she was just trying to kill it before it made contact with Madoka. So, Homura has not been trying to kill Kyubey since episode 1, and now you know why.

That's because magia is a soulless cashgrab, it sucks and as fan of pmmm it did hurt watching it. Seeing a show you love and adore being torn appart just for money... It's not even that all pmmm spin offs are bad honestly, pmmm the different story for example is plenty good, kazumi magica was enjoyable as well. But of course they had to adapt the magia record mobile game...

Madoka keeps getting better and better with every episode. Tbh in very similar tone, cutesy looking but with dark stuff like Madoka and Made in Abyss is one more anime called "School Life", super enjoyed that one, the op even has changes according to what plot uncovers! Btw, I'd love to recommend you to check out MILGRAM, it's incredible anime-styled project with various songs and music videos. I bet you'd enjoy the story and overall variety and the fact you can discuss what you think about each song because they're like clues to figure out the crime of 10 prisoners. Second season is almost over, we just got 9th song, the videos have official english translations so it's all good too! There's one person who reacted to it on YT so it seems to be safe to upload without blurring too

I have seen like one reacter watch it, and it is pretty damn good! The same sort of fun and pain, but with mostly new characters and totally new conflicts!

By not mentioning that Kyubey had multiple bodies, I would argue that we actually WERE considering where you were in the show when you asked why Homura didn't kill Kyubey...but maybe that's just my opinion. Your reaction was great, Luke; thank you for your hard work!

Every time I see CCs react to this show, they either predict the witch reveal or go "yeah, I thought that might be it". When I watched the movies for my first Madoka experience, that part hit me like a truck! It all seems obvious now, ofc, after watching the movies and series multiple times, but my jaw was on the floor that first time! It was an amazing experience that gave me chills, but dang if it doesn't make me feel dense af 😭
