The 3 movies are all cannon: Its similar to Made in Abyss where the first two are a reedited version of season 1. The third movie is a continuation of where the first season of Madoka ends. There is a 4th movie currently in production and set to release sometime in either 2024 or 2025. For perspective its been over ten years since movie 3 was released so people are really excited for the 4th movie which might be a conclusion of the whole series, or just the first part of a new set of movies.

The first two movies (I think they are called "Beginnings" and "Eternal") can easily be skipped, as they just re-tell the events of the 12-episode series with some small changes. The third movie "Rebellion" is a proper sequel, and should be watched after the 12-episode series! A fourth Movie is coming out either this winter or the next one; there is a new trailer for it as well (trailer came out like a month or two ago).

With Mami’s death, her soul gem is the hairpin on her head. So when her head is eaten, the soul gem is also crushed.

I think why Mami died is because her Soul Gem was eaten after her head was cut off and she couldnt defend herself. Or alternatively she kept it in her head and it was eaten there.

Regarding the Question which Movies to watch, here is a small Overview to clear Things up: Movie 1&2 are a Recap of the Anime. When the Series was made, Episodes were finished literally just before Release, and as such the Visual Quality is not the best it could have been. So when Madoka Magica became a Success, they redid the Series with more Budget and Care, and made it into two Movies. Those are literally the same as the Series, just inferior in every Way except for Visuals IMO. Voice Acting is weaker and many Scenes are missing. Worth watching for Eye-Candy though. Movie 3 is called "Rebellion" and is the Continuation of the Series. This is what People want you to watch after you finish the Anime. I might as well say it now and hope you remember it (but I will repeat myself in the Comments of the final Episodes): It will very likely be super confusing and having you figure it out and doing Detective Work about what is going on will be a big Appeal for your Viewers. It's quite controversial but absolutely amazing (for Reasons I can't talk about yet). Either way, Movie 3, Rebellion, will be your next Stop. Movie 4 is currently in Production after over 10 Years of Silence after Rebellion. It will be released in Winter of 2024 and everyone's looking forward to it, as... well it was long overdue. All Movies are canon^^ Don't confuse some Stuff with the Magia Record Spin-Off (which shits on much of the Source Material for Content of their Gacha Game, so I'd recommend approaching that with Care, if at all). I'm really excited to see your Reaction to what is to come! Just a Reminder, that there will be a one-of ED coming somewhere in the remaining Episodes (sund by the VAs btw), so if you could leave that in for Patreon at least, that'd be awesome! :D

In most anime accepting a deal like this is almost always 100% good or it has a way out or the other party has a change of heart and takes away the consequences. I like that this anime actually shows why that wouldn't be smart and how easily it could go south, of course you should be suspicious of someone you don't know offering so much with seemingly no downsides.

There are three madoka magica movie as of today with a fourth one planned. The two first are essentially a director's cut of what you are watching: a few scenes cut and a few added. What you need to watch are the third and fourth which are a direct sequel to both the two first movies and the TV series version that you are currenty watching.

Fully agree. Most the stuff Madoka's mom says is completely true, but you don't say that out loud to a kid. I guess technically if a kid was perfect maybe, but kids aren't. They don't need you to tell them they should go make some poor decisions or screw up a bit, they'll do that just fine on their own.

Madoka's mother is just stuck somewhere between truly amazing and horrifyingly bad... Somehow she just keeps walking that damn line. If we look at that conversation, she gave some tangible advice, some real life lessons... then she suggested alcoholism to her kid.

Just in case it ain't been said yet, Mami's Soul Gem was in her hair when she was transformed. So....head gets nom'd, Soul Gem probably gonna be broken. Also, her head got eaten and then her body was eaten like 3 seconds later. Even Magical Girls take longer than that to heal. Pretty sure with everying involved being magic and shite, if a Magical Girl is in a Witch's belly, it is likely not possible to heal. One of the coolest, vilest, most WTF reveals in that era's anime, even in all anime ever.

You don't need to watch the first two movies. They are just the anime in movie form. The third movie Rebellion is the only one you need to watch and we are getting a fourth movie soon.

Edit: A story from Anime News Network just a few weeks ago says winter 2024. Ah yes - good point. They use the Japanese ソウルジェム (souru jemu) in the anime. I guess Japanese viewers would be less familiar with ソウル and more familiar with 魂 (tamashii).

Thanks for the clarification. There's a wonderful book called "The Very Soil" by Jed A. Blue that's an analysis of this series. Looked all over the house for it yesterday, but couldn't find it, so I was working from vague memory. Anyway, a good part of the analysis compares this story to the story of Faust. It's out of print now, but you can still get a Kindle version. I recommend it highly.

I would recommend watching the first two movies on your own time right before watching the third movie. They're recaps of the entire anime with a couple added or clarified things, and watching them right before the third movie will help things make way more sense going into Rebellion, especially since you're reacting to so many different anime at once so it can be hard to keep details straight

When Walpurgisnacht was mentioned, it made me instantly think of "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime". The gathering of the demon lords was also called Walpurgis.

The first two movies are just recaps of the anime. The third movie, Rebellion, is a sequel to the anime, and a forth movie, Walpurgisnacht Rising, is being made which will supposedly be a sequel to Rebellion. There's also a side series called Magia Record that takes place in an alternate timeline and focuses on an original cast, but most people consider that one to be optional. (I loved it, personally, but the ending was... bad. Particularly given how good Magia Record was at its peak performance, the ending was just really, really lackluster.)

The reason Madoka looks terrified when Sayaka rants at her is, at least partly, because Madoka (and you as the outside observer) knows something that Sayaka doesn't: Homura didn't just stand by and let Mami die. Mami tied her up because she didn't trust Homura, remember? Homura tried to warn Mami not to go after that witch, but Mami didn't listen. But Sayaka, who was watching the Grief Seed in a different part of the labyrinth, didn't see any of that, so she doesn't know that Homura tried to intervene. From her perspective, it looks like Homura is just some heartless outsider who swooped in to kill the witch only after Mami died. Madoka understands that there's more to Homura--and maybe Kyouko too?--than meets the eye, but Sayaka doesn't. Madoka has reason to believe that talking and reaching an understanding with them might be possible, but Sayaka chooses to jump to the conclusion that fighting to the death is the only option.
