I went into Code Geass blind. Just finished S1. It’s an older anime. But, the world building is remarkable. The characters are well written & the premise of the show is intriguing. But, it does have some nudity & I know it’s been established that it’s definitely not twitch safe. So yes. A good replacement for Patreon.

This OVA is not pointless, it'll be important for next seasons. Because it aired after S1 part 2 was finished they had to do some changes to the story. They met Zenith's sister again before they sailed to central continent, we missed some wholesome auntie moments cuddling rudy. She also gave them medicine for sea sickness, because that didn't happen in the anime both eris and rudy were throwing up on the ship

Everyone is saying to watch episode 0, and I agree, though I personally would recommend watching it after the first cour of season 2, rather than before, since it spoils a certain thing about season 2, and the "mystery" regarding that thing that was there in the source material is gone in the anime due to episode 0. Though absolutely do watch it at some point. Watching it before season 2 is fine, but it will make the season slightly more underwhelming and a bit frustrating to watch in my opinion, since you'll already know what the resolution to the specific thing that it spoils will be.

The story in the beginning shows Cliff family being killed by a raid of bandits and him becoming an orphan. He is the grandson of the Pope so the Pope takes care of him in the end. He receives education and quickly develops his skills, being labeled a "prodigy" and a "genius" he let's all the praise go to his head. Cliff is half hobbit / halfling so he looks smaller but in reality he's the same age as Eris (2 years older than Rudy). However, most orphans become adventurers and they tell their stories to other orphans, so he became enfatuated with their stories and wanted to try adventuring on his own. So there was a moment where he could escape to try it and that's where this story begins. The knight Eris saved is Therese Latria, she's Rudy's aunt and the sister of Zenith. One of the reasons why Paul went to Millishon was because Zenith's family lived there and he could use the money and connections of the Latria family (one of the noble families of Millis) to get help for the search and rescue party. As Paul kidnapped the slaves of other nobles, the Latria family standing helped to save his ass many times over. However the Millis religion stands with monogamy (which is why Zenith became enraged when Paul cheated) so, Zenith's family also had animosity towards Paul for cheating on her and becoming a drunkard. This was cut off the anime, but Rudy stayed a week in Millishon, in that week he had a date with Eris where they bought the black dress she used in "that night" and had a lunch with Paul, Norn and Eris, though that was a bit strained since Eris still hated Paul and Norn hated Rudy. Paul tells Rudy there that Sylphie was working really hard to improve her skills and learn ettiquete from Lilia and Zenith. She also learned healing & detoxification magic from Zenith and could use it without chants (something Rudy can't do). As everyone has been saying, you need to make sure to watch episode 0 of season 2. It is not a recap, and should be watched before starting season 2. It will give you a lot of important information about what has been going on while Rudy was making his way back home and introduce/reintroduce characters that are central to the story of the second season.

I 100% believe you should watch it but it does make the season, especially with you forgetting some stuff like Rudy would, a bit lack luster. The toughest part of being a new anime fan is filler and what is and isn't such. Sometimes filler is great, you get to see characters you love do more stuff, but ultimately it means nothing (progress in character growth, characters introduced, etc). Then you have OVAs, supplementary episodes or movies that provide more context (adding in stuff that wasn't shown in the series due to time constraints, like this). This was important to watch as is Episode 0 of Season 2. The only time you usually have to worry about filler are long series or those that have long breaks between seasons/cours, often episodes returning to them are catch-up episodes that condense the story thus far with minor details left out. Filler episodes themselves are easy to avoid if you get into the long series, fansites keep a pretty clear list of them.

Luke, watch what the site offers you, obviously if there is an episode, it's a must-see. It's just that it's hard for studios to fit the right things into a predefined number of episodes, so they start inventing episode 0, episode 7.5, or putting it in an ova.

Cliff is around the same age as Rudy is if I remember correctly. Cliff is the grandson of the Pope. The opening is Cliffs life. His parents getting killed by the pope's knights then being an orphan then being adopted by the Pope. Cliff thinks Rudy is some middle aged man. And well it's just his imagination. Cliff is very good with magic so he got all stuck up thanks to it.

The church and politics of Milis is something that become a bigger part of the story much much later, way past the anime and even past where the manga's at. It's not really important to dwell too much on it right now, other than maybe just the obvious like them discriminating against demons. It also makes that Goblin question you asked kind of complicated and I don't know the answer. It may have been mentioned at some point in the LN but I don't remember. For my own piece of mind, I think of them as just monsters like in a video game, but given what we do know about Milis, there probably wouldn't be laws against killing them even if they were beings capable of reasoning with and coexistence. And if there aren't laws against it, then there's nothing stopping someone from creating a guild contract to hunt them if they want.

For episode 0s, that usually means it is a prequel episode for that anime. They are important, but are denoted as 0 so the watcher knows it will be different from the rest of the series.

With both the hair and the gender being different, on top of the question of "if that was the case, why wouldn't they just tell them" it makes you second guess yourself on if it's actually the case or if you're looking into it too much and it's actually just unrelated. It still adds more to the slight mystery it has around it, than if you immediately just know because you saw episode 0 first.

So just because the story is about Rudeus doesn't mean there aren't other stories being told in this world. The Pope and the Milis religion troubles happen mostly in the background but they do affect the world, and Rudeus ends up dealing with the consequences of the world changing.

"What's the story behind the goblins"... idk pick one, any one tbh it doesn't really matter, make that the story... now they deserve death. You can quite quickly tell when one hasn't seen Goblin Slayer. Goblins in 99% of stories are all known for their instinctual ability to spawn fast, breed with other creatures forcefully, pillage villages and kill using low level intelligence. Think if Coyotes learned to use the items their victims left behind, were always in heat, and raided the suburbs for targets to birth their spawn.

hi Luke, I think what you see as old school about the anime is that the studio put a lot of effort into it and it's all hand-drawn and they only use CGI in the fights. Only a few people do that these days because it's just a lot of effort

The goblins will just be normal goblins (see anime Goblin Slayer) only goblins who worship a slime that leads them are good gobos and are allowed to live :) + this is the holy city of Millis and as you have seen there are demons and probably all non-humans there Not equal, so gobos in the city's area of ​​influence are rather meh

Yes, both the Manga and Anime skipped this content. The Anime re-introduced it before the start of season 2, but chronologically it comes around the time Rudeus was teleported (episode 9 or 10). It's very much canon. Just different adaptations handled it differently.
