I think Luke will figure it out, it will be the first on the list and it's a must-see. Everything is so strangely done because the author of the source material allocated entire chapters to the point of view of other characters, which technically does not apply to the main character, but helps to better understand the side characters and his thoughts, so for some reason they were taken out either in ova or in episode 0

Think you kinda summed up my thoughts of this at the end. I'm never gonna warm up to Rudy being a creepy scumbag. But this episode frames his past life and uses it to develop his story very well. Overall, I think it's solid but far from my fav, and that's mostly down to the scumbag Rudy parts. Also posting to keep Castlevania in the patreon memory.

Every reincarnation anime builds their characters/ premise slightly differently. With mushoku Tensei they made Ruddy reincarnated with his full personality from previous life along from birth, hence his action, or rather, inner dialogue and uncontrolled expressions is rather odd for his age. It really stems from what he experienced from past life making him a shut-in, which is by nature quite self-centred and awkward. When you are alone you dont have to hold back your expressions. :D Without spoiling a different anime, i really liked one where the Main character were reincarnated, and while the passion for certain obsession remained, and the MC sometimes portray traits that is above their age in the new life, it was explained by the author (in an interview i think?) that they ended up expressing themselves like a child as their brain wouldve been that of a young age. The argument is alot of behavioral traits correlates to the development of the brain. So while the MC has knowledge from past life, their expression and action reflects their age. Rather interesting approach IMO. And then there's a slime. And a vending machine. And a pig.

Sylphy is the name of the green haired girl you were thinking of. The character at the end of this episode has white hair. She also appears very briefly in S1 E14 (21:42) on a balcony watching while Sauros (Eris' grandfather) gets his head cut off. Great series. Thanks for reacting to it - it's been fun.

I'm not sure how crunchyroll lays it out but before season 2, you need to watch Episode 0 "Guardian Fitz" (it might be classed as an OVA) so just watch out for that but it's important information going into S2

I don't know on which platform you watch anime, season 2 has had difficulties in production because of time constraints and some other problems that were not the studio's fault, but the 1st blu ray of the season came out a few days ago and it has a TON of corrections, if it's in any way possible, start with that one. Oh and first episode of season 2 is called episode 0, because it's like an OVA too.

Yeah I really love how it focuses on the both aspects. Often anime series skip the whole aging part and whole story goes weird and timeline gets super weird. For example I love One Piece, but man the timeline sucks. Not really a spoiler, but lot of the story is done within few months (this includes traveling too) and some of the biggest arcs are done in one to few days, with crazy amount of progression skill wise. Mushoku Tensei timeline is done fantasticly.

I always cry at the fact that after everything it was his loving mom that was able to pull him through. Also it's a quick detail but as he walks out of the room his "thoughts" are done for the first time in his Rudy voice, where the rest of the show his thoughts have always been his voice from his past life. He's finally been able to start walking away from his past life and think of this one as his main one, and this family as his main family.

I think one reason I and a lot of people really like the connection between Rudy now and his memories of his past life is because of just how rare that is. There are a lot of isekai out there that either pay it just a surface level tribute in the character's mind, or entirely brush it aside with the attitude of the character being so in love with the new world they don't think about it anymore. It's one of the things that really make this show stand out to me. In terms of Rudy's character, his past flaws and trauma pretty much drive the majority of his decisions, at least until he's able to grow out of the flaws and overcome the trauma. And realistically that's a painfully long drawn out process and not something that just happens the moment you see a dragon and unlock super powers.

I love this anime so much. Rudeus has changed so much, grown so much. His love and the urge to find his mother gave him the strength to stand up and take a step...but notice that mentally he's not getting any better. This is important for what's to come. I'm curious to see what you will think of season 2 (which I think is wonderfully well written). Don't forget that season 2 starts with episode 0.

Here's a little information about Rudeus' previous life that I heard from a light novel reader. I'm sure someone here can confirm this or correct me. Long before, before this one day in his previous lives, he was quite a sporty guy when he was young. But then he got his first PC and became fascinated with it and became so distracted by it that it affected his grades in school. So because of his bad grades and middle school diploma, he could only go to this one high school, where he met these bad guys who traumatized him so much.

The Eris OVA we mentioned on stream is listed as episode 24 on crunchyroll, but it takes place during the episode when Rudy meets Paul (episode 16 ?), just saying so you are not confused. Also there is an episode 0 of season 2 which isnt a recap like in other anime so dont skip it.

You were right about the girl at the end. It is Sylphie, the elven girl with the green hair, but they have changed white. You'll see why her hair has changed and why she is there in season 2 episode which is a must-watch OVA because it adds so much context for season 2

Ref the (before credit) ending. It's easy to misinterpret what happened. Rudy isn't cured. Not by a long shot. But now he's TRYING to be better. It won't be a smooth path. SEASON TWO BABEEE! 18:15 "How many Demon Eyes has she given away?" She doesn't lose an eye when she gives it away. Spoiler? Also, Ghislaine's eye *could* be given away by Kirishika but, in Ghislaine's case, she was born with it.

This episode always gets me emotional because as soon as he actually thinks back to Zenith and the love she has, he immediately knows that he can’t sit around anymore. His family is waiting for the mom and it’s his job to find her. It’s also extremely beautiful with him walking past his old self, leaving behind the him that was chained to that fence. He’s growing and he won’t let this depression from Eris stop him.

You mentioned Monogatari. I can only say that it is the Anime I most cherish in all the world and while I would love to take that journey with you... You're not ready for it. It is insanely complicated and both dialogue heavy and visually enigmatic. The author absolutely adores the japanese language and it's riddled with puns and references that will just fly over your head. It would def have to be patreon exclusive... Other people have reacted to it on YouTube but you're a bit more careful. There is outright nudity, perceived nudity and sexual content. It has that and more that turn people off it but it is also intricate and just so very very good. I love it more than warm buttered toast. By all means, react to the openings. That will give you a taste of how it looks visually tho trying to guess the story by the openings is a fool's quest of epic proportions.

So when Rudy left he didn't just up and leave he helped out with the well that he was asked to help make. So that way the people there could well survive. I forgot how emotional this episode was and ye. But there is one cut chapter which I doubt will ever be animated which came right after the chapter this episode covered. And it was just Eris's perspective throughout the whole show of where she was in. Volume 6 extra chapter. If you ever wanna give that one chapter a read and see more into what makes Eris so amazing .

The wrap-up scenes in this episode are some of the best Mushoku Tensei has to offer. I had forgotten how artfully done Rudeus's "get up and go" moment really is, and the check-in with all those minor characters from part two was pretty smooth as far as these things go! (Also dropping support for Code Geass:Lelouch of the Rebellion as the next Patreon-exclusive)

I think you mean that, it spoils "a place", but if you learn about the place in episode 4 or episode 0. Those type of spoilers are kinda irrelevant in my eyes. there is minor spoiler which is fina and there is bad (character die, the suspect was X, and y in fact never died). Places don't really matter that much. The madman human god spoil us all the flipping time. It tells rudy "do that and do this and your family will be saved". He literally predict future 100% accuracy all the time. You could say that if you only watch the meetings with the human god you get to watch ep 8-23 in around 20-30 minutes cuz it spoils always z.z the outcome

I'm saying this at the risk of me sounding like one big corny goofball, but I really have to say that the ending of MT S1 is just so beautiful and always makes me tear up, I swear. Rudy finding the strength to stand up straight and start walking again despite his pain, through remembering Zenith and a mother's unconditional love she shares with her child and the love he has for her is just SUCH a satisfying conclusion to the season and it really fits the overarching themes of family throughout show. The "I have to save Zenith" line especially makes me emotional especially after considering everything Rudy has been through and the character journey he has been on.

I just pulled up the light novel and quickly skimmed it. It was partially due to the computer usage, but also his own pride (which let's remember is partly why he continued acting like he did), he believed he was so smart he didn't need to study. Thus ending up going to "the worst school."

During this I had to keep remembering how bad my first breakup was when I was younger. Besides being what I think was the guy's first experience, I figure teenage body = teenage hormones, making everything just that much worse. The real identity of white haired elf wasn't revealed until the end of first half of season 2. Despite it being easy to come to the conclusion, the author wrote a lot of red-herrings to throw the reader off the true identity. He would write her in third person, have her be in the same room with the person you thought she was...but it was all smoke and mirrors at the end of the day. At the time of writing this post, you've obviously seen all of season 2 so you know by now. I'm just basically commenting to say that the Anime did this a lot differently than the Light Novel. The Light Novel kept the secret ambiguous for half of season 2, while the Anime basically gave it away in this episode (end of season 1), for better or worse.

Did Luke ignore Rudeus heartbreak of thinking that the person he was close with and spent 7 years with dumped him? And is expecting Rudeus to walk off from that heartbreak like it was nothing? Its like you going to a person who is depressed and telling him to not be depressed.

Not true - she was revealed in E0. In fact, E0 was created specifically so the audience would know who she was as well as get somewhat of a laugh at Rudy not recognizing her, as if we're in on the joke.
