With the notepad thing, I'm pretty sure if light didn't switch them out for new notepads Aizawa would've noticed some of the pages missing and found out they were making notes anyway, so it was a surefire way for Aizawa to know one way or the other.

Lukash

yes, you have seen that they have been taking a lot of notes, it would be visible change from a full stack

Lukash

but, why didnt light use the one he brought himself :D to REALLY keep the room unchanged

"who works out in a gym like that?" ummm me >.> also it COULD be a part of Lights plan but you can also say its the last 3 episodes of the show and 99% of the time the bad guy always loses so unless theres some insane plot twist, THIS very well might not be part of Lights plan and is indeed leading up to his end. Also its a good thing they mentioned that 23 day rule (which i completely forgot was a rule) cause that ends up being VERY, even VITALLY important in the live action movie

Mello's lack of screen time is unfortunately a result of a lot of the second half of the manga being cut. I guess I understand how these things aren't as important to the overall outcome of the story as Near's interactions with Light, but it does leave Mello feeling like a bit of an empty character.

Matthew Valentine

It's definitely fair to be pretty confused at this point in the anime because they cut a good amount of material from the manga at this point. Light is getting VERY cocky at this point though.

If light writes on the top of a notepad, it will imprint on the lower papers, so he won't do that, as it leaves evidence. If he writes on the bottom, it will not imprint, so he can do that, but the pads would then be missing pages at the bottom. So, if he wants to avoid any proof of notes being passed, he must change the notepad after use. Aizawa's nail gambit was considering these possibilities.

Blitz Cam

Yeah that is very likely to why he chose the bottom pages. Also, I'm not sure what kind of note pads they have, but of course if you have to rip the pages off, it could be fairly easy to tell if they were used. Light would likely notice too if top pages were ripped off, but bottom pages no one would check the tops to see if they were ripped. But yeah a nail indent was better than let's say a pen mark, which would be noticed more easily, but not overlooked like a nail mark could be.

I would be interested in checking out the manga. Though, having seen Death Note several times now, I have gotten a good idea of what Mello could be doing right now (in the parts that have been skipped.) More can be explained later, after the last few episodes, but I think Mello has played, and still plays an important role in the show. But of course he has his own personality and beliefs that differ from Near and L, when they confront Light. Mello is very much more about action, as seen by him previously kidnapping people directly involved with the Japanese task force.

Also, I feel like now may be a good time to mention this, and without spoiling, the last 2 episodes of Death Note, you'll want to watch together if possible. You might just find a very big cliffhanger after episode 36. But of course up to you, and if that is possible.

Kosumi

Yeah, I'm gonna wait and watch both episodes together regardless, but for Luke's own experience I second this idea

To clear up your confusion about the hotel notes: the entire pads have been replaced with new ones. Light would not use some of the pages and then simply leave it that way so that any observant person could see that they've been passing notes. Aizawa understood this and so left a fingernail indentation on the underside as a hidden mark... so then if the indentation is gone it isn't the same pad, and so if the whole pad has been replaced then there must be a reason for that.
