Interesting choice to try and do both effectively. Downside with how stubborn people seem to be with this kind of stuff (Generally going with Nostalgia/ whatever version they watched first, and being most attached to that version) i feel like 25-50% of both sides will end up just not watching at all with this kind of result. This might be looking at it too negatively but there were plenty of comments basically both ways saying "Ok, i guess im skipping this one then"(In regards to if their side wasnt picked). So if you go off of that, i feel like those people but on both sides will just not watch because they "Cant bear to watch the Sub/Dub" respectively. Idk, you do you, but in a lot of cases i cant say this will work out best numbers wise. Either way i could be wrong we will see how the comments go.

Oskar Broda

Half dub and half sub. This is the way.

Amberyootoob

half and half, no please god no, too jarring I'm not bothered by either but consistent is best

Karsten G

just go with one. i prefer dub so i can actually watch and not have read a series and miss everything

After Episode 4 A POLL will have to decide!!

Just go with sub to be consistent instead of flip flopping. I've watched it all on dub and sub will be a new experience for me. Even if I prefer dub to sub based on first episode. I'm not gonna lose sleep about it and avoid watching it out of protest like the sub purists.

Frentzy

I guess luke might get his patreon nuked soon huh. It's time for z.z onlyfans boys.

Lijnaito2021 !

He does have content from these companies and apparently they're going crazy so I'm just giving him awareness before it's too late

LemonSaucyPants

wait vampires and nazis that is quite a bizarre adventure

Rinnosuke

Sub or Dub, the only thing that matters is that you watch Hellsing Ultimate Abridged from Team Four Star afterwards.

Ohms

Open Sesame came from The Thousand and One Nights Tales, specifically the Tale of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves and was the password to their hidden treasure trove. its been a good while since i last read those classics, but it has always been Sesame as far as I remember

GrumpyOldAndy

Alucard has lived too long, he _wants_ to die, but no-one is powerful enough to kill him. That's why he doesn't bother defending himself, they literally can't hurt him. He is hoping to find someone with the willpower and conviction who will be able to kill him. He is disgusted with the policeman who shot himself because they just gave up, instead of fighting until the end and proving they had strength of will, fighting through the terror and potentially becoming someone who could kill him.

Abe J

It's been so long since I've seen this show I don't remember all the goofy shit in it. It's a little off putting too be honest. Must just be the Era.

Wizhito

I remember it took me a long time to realize that Allucard was actually just a reference to Bram Stoker's book

Nyarlathotep

Yeah my main issue with the subs is mostly that whoever did these subtitles is going too weeb and using arucard when everyone knows it's Alucard. Yes japanese have the r l thing but come on. Am I wrong here?

Frentzy

There are fucked up "anime" for patreon, is just that they are literally incest... or pedo stuff. In terms of "messed up", I don't find cyberpunk more fucked up. They all just did was walk naked, some ppl masturbate here and there, and lots of gore. If for something to be "fucked up" you need nudity and sexual content + gore at the same time (3 factor formula) just so you know, THERE IS NO OTHER anime that is like cyberpunk. Old shows did show nudity + gore but nothing lewd. So if you ask us to give you cyberpunk type of shows there's none.

Nyarlathotep

I'm fine with that but we need a subtitle version that calls him Alucard and not arucard. It's ridiculous.

Frentzy

I think about 25% of total viewership for hellsing would not watch, but rest 75% would watch for sure. The debate will never end anyway. This is one of the shows that both dub or sub can be "ok". In fact this show is even better compared to cyberpunk edge runner. I watched cyberpunk on my own JP and watched with luke EN dub and I can tell you, dub was quite lacking. I also watched sub Hellsing, so sub people can suck something, they complain way too much on this one. I watch 99.9% sub (0.01% are just youtube scenes dub). Either way complain less so luke have less of a headache.

Lu C

Japanese language has no 'L' sound, therefore they interchange L with R - so if they say Arucard, it's acceptable because they strugle saing Alucard - but the the subtitles having Arucard... That's a critical bug 🐛 😁 Btw watching anime in sub/not native language can really help you learn another language

corey becker

go back to the dub we beg! Also id like to make a statement on behalf of all people with Dyslexia Subs suck for us so much becuase 1 we already have a very hard time reading and now we have to do that before the next line while attempting to watch the show IT BS

Techno Chemist

While I prefer the dub, I think doing half and half is hilarious

Strang

The gore is just starting. Like they pointed out in the episode, the war has been declared. Other than gore it's only the bit of r-word from the first episode that makes this not yt friendly, but the gore will be quite excessive from here on out.

SilverDragon

The reason they call him "Arucard" in the sub and "Alucard" in the dub is that the Japanese alphabet doesn't have the letter "L". Whenever you see a Western word with the letter "L" in it the Japanese language tends to substitute in "R" as the closest matching sound/letter. An example would be "Milk Tea" in English is pronounced like "Miruko Tī" in Japanese. This is also because the Japanese language doesn't pronounce "R" the same way as the Western world. You can find many references that compare the "R" pronunciation to be a mix of how English pronounces R, L, and D.

Zack

I love that you're doing half sub half dub. I like both versions as well so this fun

wildhunt1973

Dub or sub? I can go either way, but with my bad vision, it's sometimes hard to catch sub stuff all the time. Do I prefer dub? Yes? Am I adamant about it? No. I'll just pause when I have to to make sure I understand what is going on. Though I do prefer the English pronunciation of "Al-u-card." Also, Integra's English voice is a billion times better than the Japanese. Then again, I've always loved women who talk like Lauren Bacall. As for why Alucard doesn't fight, do you realize how freaking scary it is to blow someone to smithereens and have them just SHAKE IT OFF? And "Open Sesame" is in reference to sesame seeds that grow in seed pods that split open when they reach maturity, and the phrase possibly alludes to unlocking of treasures (somewhere on Wikipedia is the source).

Man please dont do half and half, stick to the Dub.

Legacy

Dub is worth it just for the major alone, and most other characters youll see

Ryuden Tamarashi

While i appreciate the idea to do them half/half, its really not that fair for Dub enjoyers considering every other anime yourself and reactors do is subbed, and apart from a small, small handful of shows, they will all continue to be subbed. unless you end up on say, ghost stories, rwby, or baccano! Please let me know if you'd like the dub with subtitles, i can provide the files for you in HD, and that will assuage some of the complaints. At the least i can be happy that we get ep 4 in dubbed....for best girl.

GodZio

Man, I beg you. Try out Black Lagoon, I'm sure you'll love it.

Thamor

Good choice, just go half & half between sub & dub. I just keep adding Abridged voice sounds to the situations I see, really wish you will react to Abridged version of this too =)

Eliana

Trying to explain the goofy scenes to Luke: Aside from lightening the mood, their point is that they are cheaper to animate, so stopping pointless fights or dialogue to put them works both in favor of the budget and by making a shortcut in the story. Take the interrupted fight with Anderson as an example: I am pretty sure they do fight a couple of times in the manga and in the older adaptation, but they just trimmed it here because it doesn't evolve the main natzi plot

Júlia Stocco

I'm honestly curious to how they adapted the brazilian accent in the dub, probably will check that later. I love the bit with Seras and the japanese tourists the brutal but then quite bizarre moments it's what make Hellsing so fun to watch! Btw, the japanese VA for Andersen is amazing.

RavenShadrillion

noooo there was such a great moment in the dub in this episode but i also agree that sub or dub doesnt matter people enjoy what they enjoy i tend to watch something in sub first and rewatch in dub and then judge english voice actors for the effort difference japanese voice actors always go 250% it feels like where as english voice actors range anywhere from 30% to 80%

Steven H.

I would like the Dub please :)

Skeletan

THE GERMAN ACCENT NOOOO!!!!

Hængeklumpen

can you pls stick with one, switching is just doing shit halfway. Also the dub is the right choice, everyone saying otherwise are purist and should be made fun of. The english dub is consideredone of the best dubs of all of anime, only few can beat it like cowboy bebop and Ghost stories

Hængeklumpen

he should do the korean dub or spanish dub of that, just to piss people off at this point

Miklar Sihn

It is worth mentioning that you need to check out Hellsing Ultimate Abridged the moment you are done. It just works to well for this. But on the thing iwth the shows tone. This show does kinda have a split personality. Rather than choosing to keep a consistent tone, it just goes all in on comedy when it does comedy and all in on action when it does action. Either you appreciate it or you feel the whiplash... occasionally you both appreciate it and feel the whiplash.

Miklar Sihn

People have been mentioning Black Lagoon as a future patreon exclusive, i have to agree with that. The show combines 80s-90s action hero logic with the real and realistic darkness. So on one hand main characters get the full badassery and plot armor of the action hero, to an extent that occasionally irritates you. On the other hand, it gets insanely dark in ways that you just actually see in the world we live in.

Kolben Mayushuuu

So in Japanese there is no distinction between "L" and "R" so when a name like Alucard (or Arucard) is translated, they kinda have to choose between the two. I think Alucard fits better since the whole Dracula reversed thing

Robert Franklin

I thought the "Vlad the Impaler" scene was a nice touch

Patrick Jacobsen

"my opinion is the right one, and everybody else is wrong and deserves ridicule." dude, grow up.

Patrick Jacobsen

"they've got a blimp, of course they got a blimp, the fucking nazis and their blimps." top tier commentary as always Luke.

even when DUB wins we dont get the W i vote since its 50/50 maybe you watch each episode twice once dub once sub

Bluestar

NGL, I feel like the people that voted sub this time are just trolling. I get it with cyberpunk since the sub is pretty good in its own right. But not this time. Besides, my stance is always go for the dub if its above average. The vast majority of dubs, especially since the rise of simuldubs are generic and ill fitting. So it seems like a waste when genuinely good dubs like this come along, not to watch them,

Karen Porter

I find it hilarious how the styles in this show "contradicts" itself. It's all hard core and downright disturbed then full on comedy gold all in the same scene. Is that kind of what you're meaning that you can't understand? how the show contradicts itself all the time? I think it's hilarious.

Karen Porter

Japanese technically have no sound for "L" so it becomes a very quick "R" sound. Aru-car-do is how they pronounce it, but it is validly Alucard, aka as you said, Dracula backwards.

Karen Porter

Anybody besides me want to see him react to Black Lagoon as a Patreon Exclusive sometime?

Markus Wallin

I don't mind you switching. In fact, I love the subs so I will not experience the dubs in another way than through you. I am however wondering how my favorite speech h in the next episode will be with the dub :)

Casey Mitchell

Actually, how about this? You should watch the main show in Japanese with English Subs, but then watch the Hellsing Abridged series which is all English Dubs. How about that? That would basically be the same as switching every other episode, IMO.

Justin Johnson

Black Lagoon.... Another..... Shiki..... There are tons of anime that he cant watch on youtube.

Lu C

The goofy animation is because the goofy manga, love the nod to Dune. And there was no fight in museum, they were also interupted by japanese tourists in manga😁 3 studios produced the episodes in span of 7 years, counting from announcement in April 2005 to December 2012. Satelight made 1-4, Madhouse 5-7, Graphinica 8-10.

Angelia Dark

This is one of the only series I have legit loved both English and Japanese voices equally. Both are worth the watch in its entirety. If you're able, absolutely take a look at the manga, it's so well done.

Casey Mitchell

Kouta Hirano has a very... unique sense of humor. I love it, but I can understand if it doesn't land for everybody. Especially if you don't get the reference to Dune with Seras' gun being called the Harkonnen. And the Bruce Willis reference with Alucard's gun later. It doesn't help that the particular subs that he's watching are trash. The fansubs were 10x better.

Casey Collier

I think it's quite silly that some people are so up in arms about Sub versus Dub. It makes very little difference to me, though I will say the Dub for this show is quite good. It's the same for One Punch Man. I really like the Dub for that show, but I could probably watch both. I think the only series I've ever decided to only watch the Dub for was Dragon Ball, and I think anyone who's watched the Sub for that show can understand why.

Ryuden Tamarashi

I realize I never actually posted my main points about the episode!, the show isn't generally as 'fucked up' as some shows, but it has particular points and moments especially as you go deeper. This episode features some really good...i wouldn't say character 'development' so much as we get to see a little bit of Alucard. He's a monster that Revels in his monstrosity, while also despising it. His reaction to the police officer shooting himself is perfect. His pure disgust, then the way he snaps at Seras. His delight in making Integra choose to unleash him....The show puts a pretty big emphasis on him killing HUMANS here, unwitting police thrown against a nigh unkillable enemy without their knowledge. and he doesn't Care. There are plenty of reasons he lets people just go to town on him in fights first up, and a good example is when he walks out of the room. he does not fire until attacked, but the instant they fire he has absolutely ZERO mercy.

Mr. Dog

Okay so I was completely wrong. Enrico Maxwell is played by Shou Hayami who also did the same voice for Ferdinand from Ascendance of a Bookworm. The voice of Alucard is done by Jouji Nakata who is most famous for doing the voice of Kirei Kotomine. People thought Alucard was played by Shou Hayami but that's not true. It's just that Jouji Nakata and Shou Hayami sound very much alike except Shou Hayami sounds like a much younger Jouji Nakata.

KernoX

The thing about Alucards name, but i Think someone probably already mentioned it, is that japanies don't use L so Alucard ended up as Arucard ... some thing exist in other animes as well and is common

Szadek96

Japanese as a language basically doesn't have an "L" sound, so the name gets mispronounced with something that approximates an "R" being the result.

MadMinstrel

The Sesame was a vault or cave where a bunch of thieves used to keep their riches in an old folk tale. The 'open, says me' thing is a pun on that, that I think comes from the old Popeye cartoons, but I suppose that may have been pilfered from something prior.

Merramyst

I think part of the reason Alucard doesn't immediately fight back is two fold. 1. It allows him gauge his opponent's strength; he is after all, practically impossible to kill in any simple or easy manner. 2. The intimidation factor. It is terrifying for anyone that attacks him all out, and as you said, absolutely bodies him, to realise that their best efforts did NOTHING. I could be wrong, but that's my read on it.

Viktor

You missed in the credits scenes Alucard fighting Millenium during WWII.
