I think that the implication is that the leader of the Jomsvikings did forgive Thors and wants him to come back and fight in England, but Floki doesn't want that and so hired the mercenaries to kill him secretly. Thors did say that his wife Helga is the daughter of the leader of the Jomsvikings, so its possible that contributes to why he would be forgiven, but he is also insanely strong, and who wouldn't want to have someone like that in their army if they could.

Just to clarify, the war is real and the Jomsvikings are going to England to fight. Floki was supposed to recruit Thors but decided to kill him instead even though it goes against his orders. Can't wait to see the next episode reaction. Gonna be a good one.

Vinland Saga's author Makoto Yukimura is a late 40s something old man with 2 young boys. When you said you had frightening anxiety over how Thors held baby Ylva... well that's exactly what you had to experience. He values his kid's life soo much as a parent and I can see that you, as a parent as well would resonate with this series. Once you're done with the series.. The bathing thing was real and is one of the things that says a lot about vikings. Weekly bathing was not the norm for many european cultures at the time.

This show is a slow burn. It may take some time as someone who hasn't seen it to see why people speak so highly of it. I would honestly recommend just watching it on your own time first since 2 times a week is criminal and it deserves your full attention.

By the way when Vinland saga was first released on Amazon Prime, they released the first 4 episodes all at once, then there was a break before they began to release the rest of the episodes one per week.

I love how Vinland Saga portrays these legendary Vikings, the type that would have stories passed on through the generations about feats of strength etc. While a bit unrealistic and almost out of place in the anime, seeing Thors rowing by himself or leaping between the ships is creating that legendary image of the most powerful Vikings. Glad you're liking Askeladd so far, he quickly became probably my favourite characters in fiction.

I can't speak for how you'll feel about it obviously, but if you come to understand what it's going for as you get farther and farther into it, I think it'll be easy to end up liking it. But again, I would just watch it and go in with grounded expectations, like with anything else.

Hey, I love giving any anime a shot. I've watched some stuff I never thought I was going to like that I ended up loving. And I've watched other stuff I thought I was going to love and ended up unable to finish it. Vinland Saga does seem promising, I just hope it can keep the promise. :)

If you pay attention you can see that Thors aimed for the jaw in all the blows he threw to knock out the enemies.

Viking berserkers , were known for the their wild, ferocious battle behavior purportedly fighting in a trance-like state of blind rage (berserkergang). This trance like state is believed to have been caused by them ingesting hallucinogenic mushroom (Amanita muscaria). There is much debate among historians and Ethnobotanists whether or not the berserker really used the mushroom or another plant called Henbane. Both produce similar states and symptoms.

Luke, keep in mind that the author was inspired by the Viking sagas, not historically accurate works. The Vikings often embellished their actions, the sagas describe how warriors cut down masts with a single sword blow, or killed a horse with a single fist, so don't be surprised when you see some exaggeration :)

Why do the English captions have so many Japanese characters? I am hard of hearing and turned on captions because of this. The "English" captions are all in Japanese text. Nah, it was super obvious. It's one of the most common tropes used in literature. I was actually upset and made me want to stop watching because of how it felt like lazy writing. But since we had all 4 episodes dropped on the same day, I kept watching and was glad I did.

The cliffhangers just get worse over time. Then you want to binge watch the series, but if you do, you don't get the time to emotionally recover. Splitting the episodes is a good thing.
