Kingdom is not so popular because of terrible CGI in 1st season and that is the reason why not so many ppl can deal with it, but the story telling is top of the top. 2nd season is much better if we speak about graphic. You would love this show. This is one of my few 10/10 anime like Attack on Titan, Clannad, Kemono no Souja Erin, 86, Code Geass, Vinland Saga, and I watched more than 250 anime series.

So glad you finally checked out the kingdom openings! To note you are correct that there are no "fantasy magic" elements in the show its a historical retelling of actual world events during the warning kingdoms period of china. Note that most info from that time is "X battle took place, person won" so this is filling in the gaps based off the history we had. There is fantastic character progression in the show so you won't be wanting for that.. Without spoiling anything you stated it looks very samey in terms of what's going on but you gotta remember battle strategy and tactics change all the time in real life so the show does not get stale from repetitiveness. It also has elements of statecraft so its not just battle after battle. As mentioned before you gotta make it through season 1's CGI before the show takes off but as for most of us who watched it the first few episodes get you hooked anyway just from the story.

I would highly recommend reading Kingdom for all the things you hope it would be, before I would consider recommending watching Kingdom. If the later seasons do the story justice, power to the animators. I'm happy for them. I just don't think converting the scale of what's going on in the page can be properly conveyed onscreen like that.

From season 3 on, its very well adapted in my opinion! Season 3 covers the entire coalition war basically and is very well done. But yeah, the CGI in the first 2 seasons sucks alot sadly.

plenty of people already pointing out the bad cgi in season one so dont feel any need to get in on that. but if you are able to see past it kingdom is genuinely such a great anime please give it a try

I didn't like the second op when I first heard it, but it really grew on me. I can feel the hype whenever I hear it. if you liked the first op I recommend Spirit Inspiration - Nothing's Carved In Stone its zetsuen no tempest OP.

I can theorethically recommend Kingdom alot, cause the battles are all absolutely insane and it also has great characters but its biggest issue is that Season 1 and 2 of the show is animated in abhorrent CGI throughout, so it can be difficult to get into. Personally I just read the manga until chapter 261 and started watching season 3 because from then on, another studio animates it and it isnt full CGI anymore and animated pretty well, but thats obviously not the way you can go as a reactor.

As everyone mentioned the CGI is not the greatest introduction to the anime, but I watched it. That is how I got into the series, then I read the manga and waited until the next season gets animated. I got to the point in manga where the 6 coalition army attacks (not a spoiler out of context), and decided to wait for anime because of the scale of that arc war which is best portrayed in the animated form. So yeah, I watched all the seasons and watching the current one as well. It is a 8/10 show for me. I cried, I laughed I cheered. Some monotonous vibe does get to you times, but with 1 week in between episodes they down well. Definitely has some of the most sad moments in all of anime I’ve seen which deals with the death of certain characters. ;_;

Another concern with this show is that translations of the character names gets all confusing after they change the approach to it. Current subtitles use “historical” or Chinese character names, while the 1st few seasons I watched used old, Japanese pronunciation names. Hell of angry with this to the day. It is controversial.

Hey there Brother Luke, Major Kingdom fan here. This anime fits so many individual criteria of so many non-magic historically based show watchers that I obviously can't it recommend enough. I have played the Dynasty Warriors game series for the last 20 years, and to see so many aspects of that game put into a show made me very happy. It's got individual growth, great duels and battles, strategy and politics in it that you cannot go wrong with it.

The singer from Villainess Level 99 is Mayu Maeshima, ex-Myth & Roid. She also sings the 4th ending of Overlord as a solo singer. It is a brand new anime from the current season and it is awesome 😁 And the ending is sung by the main VA and the VA of the blong girl (wich by itself does not show much in the show 😅)

Kingdom manga is a gem and a cult classic, it always drawed me because there are really few depictions of spring and autumn era and this hits home, the anime skips things and sanitizes some things to be more tv friendly like some others said(less brutality, cannibalisms and other darker elements and also some of the minor character building and moments that they probably didn't animate because of $ reasons.) But it is still worth the watch if you like war animes and especially if you like big battles and slower stories where the guy starts from low and makes it up in quite a realistic way. Other awesome manga of similar style is "Ravages of time" but sadly no anime adaptation yet.

I think the main reason kingdom was not so popular in the west was because it used a lot of low framerate 3d models instead of typical drawings for many scenes. I kept hearing people trash talk it for this reason many many years ago when the anime was new. personally I like it a lot as a good manga/anime that explore warfare themes to a almost unheard of degree.
