Connell and Marianne's relationship seems to flourish as they get intimate for the first time... and then many more times over the course of the episode. Connell's friends are still very rude to Marianne in school and seems to still have no intention of publicly defending her. Make sure to drop a like if you're enjoying for the Normal People reactions!

Sooo, main takeaway here was that apparently I've spent like a year and 1.25 of these watchalong episodes thinking that "Normal People" and "Conversations with Friends" were the same show 🥴

Sarah Cervantes

Ommgg absolutely cracking up bc I forgot how much sex was in the show! Anyways, when they were speaking at the abandoned house behind the school, what Marianne was saying was that she likes him so much that she would do anything for him. Even lie on the ground and let him do whatever he wants. I love how straight forward she can be.

Angelica

I understand what you are saying about the sex scenes. The ones in Bridgerton, especially season 1 are more idk Hollywood style. Lol. If that makes sense. The ones in this show seem more realistic and intimate, which I think they were really going for. Thanks for introducing me to this show.

I binged the whole show today since I've been sick in bed all day, so now I'm catching up with the reactions and I can't wait to see what you'll think about the show! I really enjoyed it! 🥰

rachele

"I would never pretend to not know you" whew but he does every day

k

thats why that line hits so hard💔

I just feel so bad for Marianne in these earlier episodes ☹️ I love Connell but the way he treated her like she’s something shameful makes me so upset

BeesKnees

"I think they're just doing hand stuff right now" "okay okay okay....what's that mean?" "you'll find out when you get older" lmfao you guys crack me up

I think the show does a great job of showing how deep internal struggles are often mistaken for normal behavior. Connell just seems super awkward and Marianne appears obnoxious, but there's something else there.

Kristi K

i know they're suppose to be in high school ? I assume anyway. are people really friends with people who act like connell's friends do?? i'd be alone real fast before i'd be friends with people who think its ok to act like that.. and since i'm new to this show, i can't shake this feeling that there's like an enormous back story that we don't know at all? if that makes any sense? It feels like i know basically nothing about any of these characters and it just feels odd...as if i'm suppose to know/understand and i just don't? LOL idk

It was driving me crazy where I knew Rob from in the show and then I realize that he’s the boy from vivarium it’s crazy because his role in vivarium and his role in normal people are way different from each other.

Angelica

I think the idea is that this is a small town and you probably know the same people all your life. You grow up with them and even if you might not agree with everything they do, well they’re all you got. And Connell seems like a go with the flow kind of guy, so far.

Jettah

Absolutely love that you guys are reacting to Normal People! Idk if I’m right at all but when Marianne says she wants to watch connell have sex with anyone or asks him if he has a crush on anyone at school I don’t think she necessarily wants to be a ‘Cuck’ as Zuff so lovingly puts it, I think it’s mostly her insecurity with him because of their secret relationship and him not wanting anyone to know about his feelings for her publicly

Cindy S.

Yes, and the fact that Connell’s mom has been working at Marianne’s house allows viewers to realize that Connell and Marianne’s attraction had been simmering for quite some time. So despite it all feeling so sudden, it wasn’t necessarily out of nowhere for the characters given the point in their lives that we’re introduced to them.

Elvira

I think what this show does really good is to show the insecurities in the characters in a very subtle way. It’s not that message-in-your-face kind of show, and in real life it’s usually hard to understand why people act like they do if you don’t learn how to put your thoughts and emotions in to words and communicate them. Marianne and Connell are both young and haven’t figured out their own emotional patterns and cause of action yet and therefor the communication is even harder. Why they act the way they do will unfold as we follow them through their personal development.

Wow, they do not look like they are high school age! Also, am I alone that the farther away I get from high school years the less interested I am in high school years? Now days, when I see real high school kids they look like, well, kids! And, don't get mad, they aren't interesting to me for the reason this show emphasizes. Which leads to my point, that I like the choice to show H.S. kids with raging hormones coupled with a not-yet-formed emotional vocabulary to articulate what they feel or how to express it. As we get older, we are better equipped and can look at our H.S. years and wonder "What was I thinking?!" with all the dumb things we did or said. I have to be forgiving of a lot of their choices because they are just dumb kids who will eventually find their way to adulthood. Not sure if I would watch this on my own but it's interesting to see everyone's comments. I appreciate that.

I understand "small town" mentality, I also grew up in one. I guess the difference to me is that it wasn't cool or funny to be mean to people for no reason? and like constantly?? I guess the one friend does kind of say something but clearly they don't care very much haha. I'm really hoping it's only like this to set up some kind of redemption for connell to be awesome, but we'll see 😅 Idk I also feel like subtly is one thing, and just not giving any info is another. but then again I'm remembering the show is literally called "normal people" so I need to remind myself that's why there isn't really anything crazy happening lol I'm sorry I don't know how else to describe how I feel about this show so far, it just feels off? Not in a bad way, it's just different, which I do appreciate

Cindy S.

It is precisely because we can look at Connell and Marianne's time in high school through an adult lens that I find it so fascinating. It's frustrating that Connell is hurting her by keeping her secret and not defending her to his jackass friends, and Marianne with very little self-worth lets it all slide because she likes him so much. Meeting them at this point in their lives allows viewers to see how their actions affect their lives into early adulthood. (By the way, I personally found them passable as high school seniors as both Daisy and Paul were under 25 when they filmed the series).

Dónde está la biblioteca

Maybe I've aged out of this genre? Have seen this topic addressed in many a film and maybe that is why I can't get excited? I don't think they had people like me in mind when they did this series. :-) Also, how is it ok to show high school girl boobs and high school boy butt? I thought that was a line we didn't cross. i dunno --

Angelica

They are supposed to be 18, in their last year of High School, if that makes a difference to you. If you keep watching, I’m assuming you’re watching along with them, you’ll see it’s not your typical CW high school show lol.

Cindy S.

Perhaps you have? I personally think a well-written story can be enjoyed no matter the age-range it depicts. And as Angelica mentioned, this isn't a typical show about high school, and they won't even be in high school for much longer. I read the book back in 2018, so I don't recall for sure, but they are most likely 18. I'm not defending the choice, but they could justify the nudity by saying both characters were technically of legal age.
