Greetings. So! Here's a video that exists.

It's been a weird weekend, man. Not long after I returned from the funeral mentioned in the last post, I jumped on this project – if only because it provided an easy and obvious distraction. Really wasn't sure if I'd have the time to edit this footage down before the upcoming VCFMW trip on Wednesday, but well, here we are. It turned into an unboxing/demonstration video about an old CRT monitor. And a pretty decent monitor at that!

And now it's onto the last bits of prep before the event. If all goes well I'll be on the road and headed up towards Chicago with my brother in a day or so. Wish me well, and hopefully I'll get to see some of y'all this weekend 😊

Unboxing a New Old Stock 17" CRT Monitor!

Opening and setting up a new old stock NEC AccuSync 70 display from 2001! One of my older CRTs was kind of under the weather and I needed a reliable monitor for VCFMW, so I bought this one still sealed in box. Great seeing this posted right as I was retiring for the night and needing an LGR fix, but concerned about your news that went with it. My condolences man.

I hope you have lots of fun and distraction! Awesome your brother is coming along. Should make for a good drive up there :) I hope the funeral gave you all some closure, or at least opened the door in that direction. Take care and enjoy the trip and be proud of what you've accomplished :) Also, farts

Sorry to hear about your loss Clint. Distraction is king with these sorts of things. I’ve had a bit of a hard time recently with work / life and although it’s not the same situation, it’s the same resolve. I’ve absorbed myself in old games. Got my Amiga CD32 out and played through d/generation. I might do it again on a crt for that warmth :) enjoy VCF! Wish I could come in person but I’m stuck in Scotland.

My condolences for your loss Clint. I wish I could tell you in person this weekend, but the border is still closed. I hope it will be lots of fun for both you and your brother. Cheers!

I had a 120 Hz CRT for my old Win98 compy so I have a couple pieces of wisdom to share which aren't commonly known. The first is that you can make almost ANY game run at 120 Hz (or an appropriate refresh rate) fairly easily: Hit Windows+R to bring up the Run command and type in DXDIAG to bring up the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. One of the tabs should have an advanced option to override the refresh rate. The only trick to doing this is you have to remember you've done this, otherwise you could find the compy trying to set the wrong refresh rate for different games where you DON'T want to override it, plus this only works for DirectDraw/Direct3D games, not OpenGL or Glide. Also, a very good use for those high refresh rates are LCD shutter glasses! My GeForce 2 card had such a feature and I made ample use of it as it worked out VERY well with those ultra-high refresh rates! :)

My condolences sir... Also, super happy you get are getting to head back up to VCF! Wish I could get up there this year. In any case, it was a PLEASURE to meet you a few years ago at VCF '19, and I hope you enjoy yourself!

I wish I could make it to VCF. I saw that the 8-Bit Guy is going as well.

I had a similar-looking MultiSync with flat glass and it would have been my favorite monitor...but I also had the Trinitron that came with Sony VAIOs like the one you showed recently. That one has an even nicer "rear profile" than this NEC, in my opinon: https://www.sony.jp/CorporateCruise/Press/199910/99-1013/

I'm sorry to hear that you lost someone recently. I hope you have time to properly grieve for them. On a more related note, I'd love to see your reaction to playing Quake 3 and other games that can support the 120Hz refresh on a system that can push the frames that high. I managed to come across a Samsung SyncMaster 110DF a few months back and I LOVE it. I've only got one additional CRT in my wish list, and that is one of the few, widescreen ones I've been drooling over since I found out about them a few years back.

When will you be hanging around VCF?

Great stuff. NEC monitors are made to last. Would have LOVED to hop on some of that LAN-Party action. Looking forward to an update about awesomeness at VCF!

Still waiting for the mobile LGR museum ;-)
