Originally this video was just going to be a quick one for LGR Blerbs, but then reality occurred. So instead, it's an impromptu unscripted LGR Thing!
This past week I've had no less than three different projects go awry in depressingly irksome ways, which meant that all of a sudden none of the half dozen hours of footage I'd recorded could be used for anything. At least not by Friday, not without ruining the rest of my week scrambling to catch up and force creativity. And that never ends well.

As a result, here's a rambling look at a computer that isn't anything special. Except it is because of the context! Back around the end of April, Neil of RetroManCave held a charity auction for a number of these IBM NetVista PCs he'd restored. Wanting to support the cause, I went ahead and put in a healthy bid on one of them -- and won! It ended up taking over a month to arrive due to all manner of shipping and customs nonsense, and in the end the box showed up looking like it had endured an armed skirmish or two.

Thankfully it was still very much intact and working fantastically. I hope you enjoy this half hour of late 90s/early 2000s computing. Now to see if I can get even one of the previous projects back in action 😬

Exploring the IBM NetVista M41 Windows 98 PC

Back in April, RetroManCave held a charity auction for these IBM NetVista PCs he'd restored. Wanting to support the cause, I bid on one of them -- and won! So let's check out the IBM NetVista Type 6792 from 2001, running a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 CPU and 16MB Nvidia Vanta graphics. ● The charity: https://brighterfutures.charitycheckout.co.uk/donate ● The RMC video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDTJUzprx-A ● LGR links: https://www.twitter.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.facebook.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews ● Music courtesy of: http://www.epidemicsound.com #LGR #Retro #Computer

media test failure. It's for the ethernet port.

What a deliciously disorienting mix of ingredients from two of my favorite YouTubers! Nice and semi-subtle use of RMC-stylee montage music, too, while we're at it.

My thoguhts for upgrade/content would be to install Warp on it? Or some version of OS/2..

LazyGameReviews

It'd make sense! While looking for new sound drivers, I found a ton of OS/2 stuff for this system. Can't say I've ever messed with OS/2 newer than Warp so it'd be an experience.

I know I said it before but it bears repeating - welcome to the RMC NetVista Owners' Club! Looking forward to receiving our exclusive mugs 😉

I quite enjoyed the tangent into sound compatibility I never gamed with Dos back in the day so to me a sound card was a sound card.

LazyGameReviews

I'm glad! It's a deep rabbit hole, with seemingly endless variants to choose from back then. Most of which were a total toss up in regards to DOS support.

Hola Clint

I really wasn't expecting to see this in a video Clint but I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank goodness for the bubble wrap! I've put a SB Live! in mine which really helps with pure DOS SB audio...I've not got as far as deciding on a video card for it, but that case looks so good. Thanks again for your immense support of the charity, looking forward to hearing what upgrades you go for.

Just when you thought you couldn't love LGR (for participating in the actual auction) or Neil from RetroManCave (for being in LGR's words a "dork" for doing all the SFX), this video drops! Thank you for making my and a lot of other people's week, both of you. :)

Thanks for putting in the work to make this happen! Doesn't get much better than being able to support a good cause and getting some old PC hardware on top of it. An Nvidia GeForce 2 or 3 should be ideal, this is going to be a fun project box.

it's weird how a person's IT life experience alters. Clint sees the PXEboot warning and thinks something's broken. I'm a systems admin, so fairly server orientated, and just went, "Oh look, IBM had the same BIOS is desktops, too"

Anonymous

I had an earlier revision of IBM desktop in a near-same case. I think the 300GL desktop version? Man I did some damage to that, but it was a big help in my early computer learning. Can't fathom them being 'retro' now rather than 'junk' :D

three projects going sideways is terrible. 2020 has been quite the year

ARSE!! I thought you were gonna auction off the computer.....heheheheh :)

I'll be honest, Pentium 4 is a platform I could take or leave, but that is one tidy little OEM system indeed, and with such a fantastic story behind it, not just of the restoration but the charity auction too! I have an IBM "Personal Computer 330" Pentium 1 system, which I use when I'm doing DOS game streams, it's another aesthetically pleasing IBM system, in the same beige/blue design language. They're beautiful things! :)

As an RMC supporter, and a UK resident. I find the fact you bought this and helped donate to our NHS awesome, thanks Clint. My wife is one of the NHS keyworkers fighting this damned thing and I' m just really greatful you did that. Neils idea to auction this was an awesome one, I put in some bids but needless to say I ran out of cash before they ended :p

DOSGamerMan

After playing burnout 3 all the need for speed games seem slow and heavy. Burnout 3 has ruined other racing games for me.

50_SHADES_OF_BEIGE

Lucky you. I bid on them, but simply couldn't justify the price.

I recognize that 3Com synth thing, I have an old Dell with a SoundMAX in it. I think I have the wrong drivers or something because all of the sound is playing back at double-speed, even in Windows games. Also, that poor box. It looks like someone specifically found the "FRAGILE" in the corner there and stabbed it with a box cutter.

Anonymous

I guess I'll be first of a tsunami of comments telling you that PXE is pronounced "pixie" :P

Porsche Unleashed gives me so many early 2000's memories...

Just wanted to say a big thanks for helping support our NHS. Much appreciated!

Those Windows sounds cracked me up! 😂🤣

Can't believe you didn't end the video with the windows shutdown sound 😝

Wish her my best! Tons of respect for the health professionals doing their best to handle this awful situation, one that only seems to be getting worse.

LazyGameReviews

What did you think of Criterion's Need For Speed Most Wanted reboot? For some folks, it felt like too much Burnout in Need For Speed!

LazyGameReviews

It is increasingly odd to me as well. Seeing the prices and collectibility of P4 machines continuing to rise in recent years is wild. A whole new generation seems to be discovering them!

"Media test failure" the computer has PXE boot as the first in the boot order. It's to boot from something over the network. I use this at work to image computers :) Though I should probably watch the whole video before commenting lol.

I love that you got one of these. I just became an Official Cave Dweller!
