Got an early look at this one for ya!

No background music, missing plenty of gameplay from the latter half, but yeah. Mostly there. Will update the embedded video with the finished version tomorrow night, if all goes well.

EDIT: the video embedded above is now complete! Finalizing captions now. Have a happy Halloween!

Still really enjoy this game, as weird as it is. God games like this one are a rarity in the grand scheme of things. Hope you dig this preview of the review that's going up Friday!

Black & White: Playing God With a Giant Cow

In the early-2000s PC gaming world, few titles were more hyped up than Black & White! It was the first game from Lionhead Studios, headed by Peter Molyneux of Populous fame. And it featured a whole lotta cow slapping. ● LGR links: https://www.patreon.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.twitter.com/LazyGameReviews https://www.facebook.com/LazyGameReviews ● Links to the fan-made patches and multiplayer mode: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Black_%26_White http://bwgame.wildman-productions.org/index.php ● Music courtesy of: http://www.epidemicsound.com #LGR #Gaming #Retrospective

I've been waiting for that review for years! Got the game in 2001 and was amazed at the amount of freedom you had in it. I remember that quest when you have to convince a follower of your divine powers. I've flung him in the ocean. He was convinced... for a few seconds...

For me, those constant black screens were disconcerting. Still, great review.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Clint! I don’t recall ever beating island 4 back in the day. Would be curious to see island 5 in action.

I half expected a hdmi - b&w television section.

I'm surprised I've never heard of this game. I can't even imagine the cumulative time I've spent playing Populous over the years. It's definitely in my top-5 favorite games. I'm also surprised to see you upload a video to Patreon that isn't completed yet. Have you ever done that before?

I really like that we get to see these early cuts of your videos, even if there's black screens and missing music. Keep up the great work!

Alyxx the Rat

I remember this game being quite the rage when it came out. Still an intriguing concept.

I have actually wanted to replay this game for some time now but can't find a seller... Does anyone know where you can buy this game today? Preferably as digital download...

Anonymous

I'd love to play this, really, perhaps in a re-mastered form.

Also, looove seeing the incomplete video. As a creator myself, it really gives a great insight into your workflow.

My reaction when animals get injured in games 😭 my reaction when humans get injured in games 🤷🏻‍♀️

I remember this from back in the day. wasn’t there some spiral side quest where you have to move the camera behind this guy climbing a mountain but you can’t get too close or he notices you? Man what a pain that was :)

LazyGameReviews

Yeah it's worth checking out if you enjoy Populous! Plenty of shared DNA between the two. Heh, and usually the videos I upload aren't *this* incomplete, it's true. This ended up being a much more tedious to edit video than anticipated and I was going nuts not having anything to show for it, so in a way this was more for my benefit than for patrons :P

LazyGameReviews

Happy to hear it! I'd like to share the entire process in-depth sometime, as I always love seeing how other works myself.

LazyGameReviews

It sure was a hype machine, no doubt about that! Seemed like every gaming magazine on the planet was going nuts over the possibilities.

LazyGameReviews

This is unfortunately one of those games that has never been made available digitally. Only way to play it is to find a physical copy or a not-so-legitimate download, and even then it's really hard to run due to the SafeDisc copy protection, among many other technical issues.

LazyGameReviews

It could do with a remaster, for sure. Shame EA seems to have no interest in it, they won't even sell it digitally.

LazyGameReviews

Ha, pretty much! At least these are giant immortal beasts built to withstand all manner of supernatural punishment. I'd be quite sad if they could die!

LazyGameReviews

Yeeeeah. One of the more tedious tasks in the game. But it becomes much more doable when slowing down time 😁

LazyGameReviews

Haha, I wasted that guy as well. Love how much of a mad tyrant you can become, yet still continue to disbelieve.

LazyGameReviews

I wish I had the time/patience to play through it again! There's some playthroughs on YouTube though if you're curious 👍

Vlaphor

The first thing I noticed was the Harvester poster. Harvester is the greatest bad game of all time. I love it, though the playing part of it is the worst part. Still something everyone should experience once. Also, I bought Black and White at launch and never really got all that far in it. It was not quite what I was expecting.

I saw the thumbnail and knew I was going to like where this was going.

It's Crazy, I've had this and Black &White 2 in my collection for years, and I've never played them, after watching this video I'm deffinitley going to load this up on my Winxp gaming rig, thanks for the awesome video Clint......You Rock!!

LazyGameReviews

Yeah I've had that up ever since covering the game on LGR years back! I'm quite fond of it, despite its many flaws haha. "I'd say this was death by natural causes." "Natural causes?!" "Ya can't live without a spinal cord, son."

I kinda suspect these game reviews aren't that lazy anymore ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

LazyGameReviews

Indeed, there's good reason why I no longer call it "Lazy Game Reviews!" I'm happy to just pretend LGR doesn't stand for anything anymore.

Terry Lee

I remember black and white, ironically it was very much a blessing and a curse! I recall loving it and hating it at the same time! I never was good at clicking and dragging the mouse around. I wish they made the game with simple menu options instead of attempting hand gestures that were very finicky! Oh and Clint were you hinting at possibly reviewing Planescape Torment in the near future based on the box art displayed in the center at the beginning of this video?

It seems like this game's most unique features are also where it falls down the hardest.

Mark Balcerak

Any plans to do black and white 2?
