Clint, this video was perfectly in depth. I just sat with a few of my more experienced EE buddies (it's Friday at our engineering R&D firm, so honestly we're goofing off). The more seasoned fellow among us started with "I bet he won't talk about how white LEDs are just Blue LEDs with more power and yellow added." then you did, and he was impressed, then I sat here thinking, "Oh, I bet he won't even go into how Blue LEDs were a boon in furthering laser tech." and you did. Color me, and my mates impressed. If I was to explain to a layman why Blue LEDs are so vastly important, I don't think I could do much better than this video, at least without becoming so technical that it's hard to grok. This hits the sweet spot so well that I'm going to reference this to others when the topic comes up. Thanks for the high quality content :)

Excellent video! I had always wondered why old electronics were limited to red & green. If only I could convince manufacturers that the blue LEDs they use now didn't have to be so blindingly bright.

Blue also proved difficult with OLED technology too. Blue is just a really weird and stubborn colour when it comes down to it! ;D

Indeed, the OLED story could be a topic all its own, especially with the current monopoly on manufacturing and such -- which is why it's not talked about here :)

A site note about laser projectors... they create so much speckle on the screen that IMAX and Dolby Cinema has to install "screen shakers" behind the screen to vibrate the screen within a few millimeters in random patterns to help dissipate the laser speckle. It helps, but does not completely eliminate it. Also - the higher gain of your screen the worse the laser speckle. In fact, most IMAX Digital screens still use Xenon technology to illuminate the projectors, while all Dolby Cinema locations are laser.

Amazing, though seems to definitely make sense with the comment above about blue OLED proving difficult, possibly as well as the blue color being a bit more unreliable than the others. Of course, this is a topic of its own. :) -- Regardless, I never knew blue was difficult with regular LEDs to begin with.

Nice one. I'm a street lighting engineer by trade and the advance in the performance of the fittings year on year is still pretty spectacular. With lights now available in increments of 1W and tons of different reflectors you can really play around to only have exactly the amount of light and columns necessary and save a ton of money in the process.

the only thing I hated about the blue led was when they put it in every power button without thinking if it was a good idea. I had monitors where I needed to tape over the power button so the bright blue LED wouldn't penetrate my eyes and would turn me into a wise man!.
