It's possible that the ferryman wasn't looking at Askeladd's sword, but rather was looking at his armor. It's a small detail that might be missed, and it doesn't likely add much to the plot, so it's really nothing to worry about. However, I believe it does have meaning. Also, when Askeladd says, "The more charmed you are by a man, the less likely things will go your way" and it's shown that he's thinking of Thors right before, this is actually a really great scene. It definitely looked as though there could have been a parallel drawn between Thorfinn and Canute from the line just before when he said, "And as he is still young, there is much we can expect". My interpretation of the line that follows the Thors flashback, was that Askeladd had stated his belief that he's maybe glad he's not charmed by Canute, otherwise things would not go his way, being possibly blinded by that faith in Canute. Now the reason I believe that Askeladd is thinking of Thors in this moment, is because he probably feels he 𝘪𝘴 charmed by Thors, his ideology, the type of man he was. I think you both are right in saying that Askeladd does really respect him, but not only that, the respect for Thors also might be making Askeladd feel as though it's clouding his typically calculated behaviors.
