Hello fellow Pipers! 🥰 Are you having a good day?

In this week's diary, let's start by imagining how things might have turned out if Musical Piper's story had taken a slightly different path. What if Eugene easily gave up her dream because of her race and chose a different job? Of course, it could still make an interesting story. But both the characters' personalities and the story's themes might have taken a different direction. This is a reminder of how characters' reactions in the face of challenges hold valuable information about the story.

During this week, while writing song lyrics, I discovered an interesting theory that applies to musical songs and storytelling as well. It's about creating three-dimensional characters through their responses to the situation. So, this week, I'll be jotting down my thoughts about the process of storytelling through Reaction of characters.

Every story has a simple storyline. There's a protagonist living their life, and then an event occurs that shakes up their life, whether positively or negatively. To overcome the event's obstacle or solve the issue arising from it, the character responds with actions to change the situation. This reaction is important; it needs to be proactive, reflect the theme, and reveal the character's personality.

Most duets take the form of a conversation, making this aspect stand out more. To illustrate this, let's take the song "The Other Side" from "The Greatest Showman" as an example.

This number is about a circus owner (Hugh Jackman) proposing a collaboration to a successful show businessman (Zac Efron).

In this scene, the characters' objectives are as follows 👉

Hugh Jackman's goal: Collaborate with Zac Efron on the circus ⬅Obstacle: Efron's avoidance Zac Efron's goal: Break away from his current life ⬅Obstacle: Fear of new challenges

In this scenario, Hugh Jackman takes persuasive actions to overcome the obstacle. And he's quite proactive in doing so, displaying actions of persuasion. From these reactions to the obstacle, we can see that Hugh Jackman's character is free-spirited, proactive, and somewhat cheerful.

Actions: Persuasion

1. Reveals a specific escape plan

You run with me

And I can cut you free

2. Provokes

You can play it sensible, a king of conventional

Or you can risk it all and see

3. Highlights advantages

Stay in the cage, or you'll finally take the key

Oh, damn, suddenly you're free to fly

On the other hand, Zac Efron's character displays a defensive attitude. He uses sarcasm to hold on to the proposal. Thus, he comes across as conservative, cautious, and daring when necessary.

Actions: Evasion

1. Appeals that his life is satisfying as is

'Cause I quite enjoy the life you say I'm trapped in

2. Mocks the proposal and job

But I live among the swells,

and we don't pick up peanut shells

I'll have to leave that up to you

3. Denies his current situation (not a firm refusal but evasion)

Oh, damn, can't you see I'm doing fine

I don't need to see the other side

However, in the end, Zac Efron accepts Hugh Jackman's proposal. The reason is that Hugh Jackman presented a persuasive argument that touches on Zac Efron's character values.

Persuasion 4) Offers not only the reward of freedom but also the true 'freedom of choice'

But you would finally live a little,

finally laugh a little Just let me give you the freedom to dream~

Now that's a deal that seems worth taking

But I guess I'll leave that up to you

In the end, hearing this dialogue, Zac Efron's character decides to join the circus with Hugh Jackman.

When I first listened to this, I didn't realize that each sentence carried attempts to express so much about the characters' minds. It was astounding to discover the brilliance of storytelling and structure through these actions and dialogues. Finally, with a blend of proactivity, character personality, and the core value of 'freedom' conveyed, I understood how well-crafted this musical number is.

After the analysis, I pondered how to apply this theory practically. While I understood it in theory, constructing convincingly proactive character actions was a challenge without stepping into the actual situation. The solution I came up with was asking people around me:

"If you were in this situation, what would you do?"

Our musical number's situation goes like this 👉

The dam in Hameln is releasing too much water, and the town is on the brink of flooding! I am a Pied Piper who can use magic, but due to the negative perception of magic in the world, I've hidden my abilities and lived quietly. But now, to save the town, my magic is absolutely necessary! So, what will I do...

1. Escape with my dear friend: My friend's family dies, and the hometown is destroyed.
2. Use magic: My secret life collapses, and I face the danger of being exposed.

When I prepared this question and asked various friends, the original story had Dawson, a mouse from Hameln, convincing and pushing for option 2. However, most people chose option 1 when faced with these two scenarios. The reason was that without a direct connection to the town, people weren't willing to make personal sacrifices.

This made me realize the need for information about the 'intimacy with townspeople' to envision proactive actions. I found that considering this, the attractive and proactive response of "not using magic" didn't hold up as well as the character's central theme, personal bonds, and friendship, all of which were important.

So, I changed the question like this 👉

1. Escape with my dear friend: My friend's family dies, and the hometown is destroyed.
2. Use magic: My secret life collapses, and I face the danger of being exposed.

The choice of 'escape' led me to many realizations. It made the importance of Piper's strong bond with his friend even more evident. And through this choice, it became clear that he values his friend more than personal security. Thus, the character's personality and the theme of valuing friendship were all packed within one song.

And... after all these struggles, I was finally able to upload the promised lyrics!

Onwards, I plan to work on the English lyrics' rhyme this weekend, and from next week, I'll dive into more detailed thumbnail sketches and concept art. So, mark August 17th! I'll be back with an evolved process.

이번주의 다이어리는, 만약, 파이퍼즈의 스토리가 조금 다르게 흘러갔다면 어떨지 상상해 보는걸로 시작하고자 합니다. 유진이 레티언의 한계를 인정하고 다른 직업을 선택해서 삶을 살아간다면 말이죠. 물론 재미있는 이야기가 될 수 도있겠지요. 하지만 캐릭터의 성격도, 이야기의 주제도 조금은 달라질겁니다. 이처럼 어려운 일을 마주했을 때의 캐릭터의 행동은 많은 정보를 내포하고있는 중요한 이야기의 요소입니다.

이번주에 노래가사를 쓰면서 뮤지컬 음악에도, 스토리텔링에도 적용이 되는 재미있는 이론을 발견했어요. 바로 입체적인 인물을 만들기위한 '캐릭터의 반응과 그 요소'들 입니다. 그래서 이번주에는 캐릭터들의 반응으로 스토리텔링을 정리하는 과정에 대한 고민을 적어볼까합니다.

모든 이야기의 흐름은 이렇습니다. 그럭저럭 자신의 삶을 사는 주인공. 그리고 그 주인공에게 긍정적이든 부정적이든 기존의 삶을 뒤흔드는 '사건'이 발생합니다. 그리고 그 사건이 방해하는 목적을 이루기위해, 혹은 사건때문에 생겨난 문제를 해결하기 위해, 캐릭터는 상황을 바꾸기 위한 행동을 하면서 '반응'을 보입니다.

이때 중요한건 그 반응이 적극적이며, 주제를 담고있어야하고, 캐릭터의 성격을 보여줄 수 있다는 요소가 전부 충족이 되어야 한다는 것이었어요.

대부분의 듀엣곡은 '대화'형식을 띄기 때문에 이 부분이 조금 더 두드러지는데요,

이를 구체적으로 설명하기위해 The greatest showman의 the other side라는 노래를 예로 들어볼게요.

이 넘버는 새로운 서커스 사업을 시작하는 서커스단장(휴잭맨)이 잘나가는 쇼 비지니스맨(잭 에프론)에게 협업제안을 하는 노래에요.

이 장면속에서의 캐릭터들의 목표는 이렇습니다 👉

• 휴잭맨의 목표 : 잭 에프론과 서커스를 함께 하는것 ⬅장애물: 회피하는 잭 에프론의 태도
• 잭 에프론의 목표 : 기존의 삶에서 벗어나는 것  ⬅장애물: 새로운 도전에 대한 두려움

이런 상황에서 휴잭맨은 장애물을 극복하기 위해 설득이라는 행동을 취합니다.

그리고 적극적으로 설득하는 행동을 다 보여주지요. 이러한 장애물에 대한 반응에서 우리는 휴잭맨이 맡은 캐릭터의 성격이 자유롭고, 적극적이며, 조금은 능글맞은 캐릭터라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

행위 : 설득

1) 구체적인 탈출 계획을 알려줌

2) 도발하기

3) 장점을 말하기

한편, 잭 에프론의 캐릭터는 방어적인 태도를 보입니다. 그래서 휴잭맨의 제안에 꼬투리를 잡으며 비꼬죠. 그렇기에 보수적이고, 조심스럽지만, 결단을 할정도의 대담함을 가진 캐릭터라는 것을 알 수 있습니다.

행위 : 회피

1) 자신의 삶이 만족스러움 어필

'Cause I quite enjoy the life you say I'm trapped in

2)상대의 제안과 직업을 비꼼

But I live among the swells, and we don't pick up peanut shells

3)자기 상황을 부정함(여기서 완강한 거절이 아닌 회피임이 나타나지요)

하지만 결국에 잭 에프론은 휴잭맨의 제안을 받아들이게 됩니다. 그 이유는 휴잭맨이 잭 에프론이라는 캐릭터의 '핵심 가치'를 건들이는 설득을 건넸기 때문이에요

설득 4) 자유로워 질것이라는 보상 뿐만아니라 진짜 '선택할 자유'를 제공

결국에 이 대사를 들은 잭 에프론은 마음을 돌려 서커스를 함께 하기로 합니다.

듣기만 했을때는 보이지 않던 적극적인 반응들이 한문장 한문장에 담겨있어서 처음 분석때는 정말 놀랐습니다. 그리고 스토리를 쓸때 공부했던 내용이 '가사'의 형식에도 그대로 반영이 된다는 점이 정말 신기했어요. 최종적으로 적극성, 캐릭터의 성격이 드러나면서 동시에 '자유'라는 핵심 가치를 전달하면서 작품의 주제도 함께 담아냈으니 잘 만들어진 뮤지컬 노래임을 알 수 있었습니다.

분석이 끝난 후, 과연 이 이론을 어떻게 써먹을 수 있을까를 많이 고민했어요. 이론상으로는 알지만, 실제로 설득력있는 적극적인 캐릭터들의 행동을 구성하는 것은 그 상황에 들어가보지 않는 이상 알 수가 없었거든요.

고민 끝에 내놓은 해답은 '이런 상황에 너는 어떻게 할꺼야?'라는 질문을 주변인들에게 던져보는 방법이였어요.

우리의 뮤지컬 넘버 속 상황은 이래요👉

하멜른의 댐이 과도하게 방류되어 마을이 홍수속에 잠길 위기에 처했다!

나는 마법을 쓸 수 있는 피리부는 사나이지만, 마법에 대해 부정적인 세상의 시선때문에 정체를 숨기며 평생을 살았다. 그런데 이 마을을 구하기 위해서는 내 마법이 꼭 필요하다!

그렇다면 나는...

1) 마법을 쓰지 않는다 : 마을이 무너진다.

2) 마법을 쓴다 : 그동안 정체를 숨기며 쌓아온 삶이 무너지고 쫓겨날 위기에 처한다.

이런 질문을 준비해서 다양한 친구들에게 물어보았는데요, 원래 스토리는 친구 다우슨(하멜른의 쥐)의 믿음과 설득으로 2번을 선택해야하는 제안이었어요. 하지만 이 두 상황을 제시했을때 대부분의 사람들은 1번을 선택했습니다.

그 이유는 바로 '그 마을과 연고가 없으면 굳이 개인의 희생을 치를 것 같지 않기' 때문이었어요.

저는 이때 적극적인 행동을 상상하기 위해 필요했던 정보가 바로 '마을사람들과의 친밀도'라는 것을 깨달았어요. 그리고 그것을 고려해봤을때 단순히 '마법을 쓰지 않는다'는 매력적이고 적극적인 주인공스러운 반응이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었죠.

그래서 질문을 이렇게 바꾸게 되었습니다👉

1) 소중한 친구와 함께 도망친다 : 소중한 친구의 가족이 죽고 고향 마을이 무너진다.

2) 마법을 쓴다 : 그동안 정체를 숨기며 쌓아온 삶이 무너지고 쫓겨날 위기에 처한다.

'도망친다'는 적극적인 행동을 정하고나니, 많은것이 명확해졌습니다. 피리부는 사나이, 제네비브가 자신의 이익보다 우선시 여기는 것은 바로 '소중한 친구'라는 것이 잘 전달되게 되었거든요. 이로써 친구를 아끼는 캐릭터의 성격과 우정을 중요시하는 작품의 주제도 한 노래 안에서 모두 정리 되었습니다.

그리고 이런 고민을 바탕으로 약속했던 가사를 정리해서 업로드 할 수 있게되었어요!
