Hello Fellow Pipers!

Let's say, we are making delicious food. 

There are various ways to make food tasty. Special sauces, new cooking methods, and exciting spices, for example. However, without essential ingredients like rice or noodles, or fresh ingredients, the meal wouldn't be so satisfying.

And, what are the key ingredients to make a good story? 

Provocative events like murder and crime? The seriousness of social discourse? Or perhaps characters with an appealing appearance that everyone loves? 

Those are all good methods, but they are not the important ones. The key ingredient that connects everything is the "emotional change." 

In this week's diary, as I mentioned before, I will analyze good short films and discuss the core ingredient I discovered—emotions—while talking about the direction of the script.

✨ Information from short film analysis 

During this week, I looked at about 40 short films, including the ones you guys shared. Finally, I analyzed a total of five short films that have clear structures with a runtime of around 5 to 7 minutes.

I tried to write down scenes and dialogues while pausing the screen and turning them into dialogues. Surprisingly, there was a common aspect that didn't appear when watching the videos. It was the clear "rise and fall" of emotions. 

Stories have a direction and follow the protagonist's emotions. When the protagonist feels happy, we become happy, and when they feel sad, we become sad. The story depicts a rising graph when accumulating happy emotions and a falling graph when accumulating sad emotions. And through the events they face, these emotions keep changing. The reason we feel a story is good after watching it is usually because of the positive or negative emotional change in the protagonist from the beginning to the end. 

This is something we can also learn from good movies. However, when studying short films, I found something that could be learned only then—how to describe emotional changes in a short period of time.

✨ How to describe emotional changes in a short period of time 

• The total length doesn't exceed 6 to 10 pages. 
• It follows the flow of beginning (character and world introduction) -> middle (problem arises -> conflict) -> end (resolution). 
• The appeal of characters and the world is clearly presented within the first 1 minute and 30 seconds. 
• Memorable scenes, musical montages, metaphors, etc., are used to convey information concisely. 
• It focuses on a single event. It only tells the story of the protagonist.

After the analysis, it became even clearer why writing the script of 'The Pied Piper' has been difficult for me. I have been imagining "people applauding after watching Eugene's successful performance, leaving discrimination behind" as the final scene. But no matter how much I tried to rewrite the musical, I couldn't create a profound impact in the final scene. Of course I couldn't! Because without knowing why this stage is precious to Eugene, without understanding the discrimination she has faced, "The Pied Piper" would simply be another unfamiliar fantasy musical. 

To make this story better, I realized that I need to introduce Eugene's personal story more. Therefore, instead of the previous story focusing on "The Pied Piper rescuing the Ratians and becoming a hero" I will shift the focus to the story of "Eugene becoming a dreamer and achieving his dreams with The Pied Piper."

After reaching this conclusion, as promised, I have written five rough scripts over the past week. The next goal is to compile them into a PDF format and hand them over to the composer by July 16th. There may still be delayed, but I will share the progress as well.

우리가 맛있는 요리를 만든다고 가정해 봅시다.

요리를 맛있게 만드는 방법은 다양합니다. 특제소스, 새로운 조리법, 자극적인 향신료 등이 있죠. 하지만 핵심 재료인 밥이나 면, 혹은 싱싱한 식자재들이 없다면 식사로서는 아쉽습니다.

그렇다면 스토리를 맛있게 만들기 위한 핵심 재료는 무엇일까요?

살인과 범죄같은 자극적인 사건? 사회적 담론같은 이야기의 진중성? 아님 모두가 좋아하는 멋진 외모의 캐릭터들?

모두가 좋은 방법들이지만 '소재'에 지나치지 않습니다. 그 모든것을 이어주는 핵심 재료는 바로 '감정의 변화' 입니다.

이번주 다이어리에서는 저번에 말씀드렸던 것처럼 좋은 단편들을 찾아 분석한 후 찾은 핵심 재료, '감정'을 이야기하며 스크립트의 진행 방향을 말씀드리겠습니다. 

✨단편 분석을 통해 얻은 정보

이번 한주동안 여러분들이 남겨주신 작품들을 포함해 약 40편의 단편들을 살펴보았습니다. 

최종적으로 분석한 단편은 총 다섯개입니다. 5~7분 안팍의 기승전결이 명확한 작품을 기준으로 선택하였습니다.

화면을 멈춰가며 장면과 대사를 적어보면서 스크립트화 해보았습니다. 그랬더니 영상을 볼때는 나타나지 않았던 공통점이 있었어요.

바로 감정의 '상승과 하강'이 명확하다는 점입니다. 

스토리는 방향성을 가집니다. 그리고 주인공의 감정을 따릅니다. 주인공이 행복을 느끼면 우리는 행복해지고, 슬프면 느끼면 슬퍼지지요. 그리고 이야기 속 행복한 감정이 쌓이면 상승하는 그래프를, 슬픈 감정이 쌓이면 하강하는 그래프를 그립니다. 그리고 마주하는 사건들을 통해 이러한 감정은 끊임 없이 변화하죠.

어떤 작품을 보고 스토리가 좋다고 느끼는 이유는 보통 작품의 처음과 마지막의 주인공의 감정이 긍정적으로든 부정적으로든 변화하기 때문입니다.

이는 좋은 영화를 통해서도 배울수 있는 내용들입니다. 하지만 단편을 연구했을때에 비로소 배울 수 있는 것이 있었는데요, 바로 짧은 시간안에 감정의 변화를 설명하는 법 이었습니다.

✨짧은 시간안에 감정의 변화를 설명하는 법

• 전체 길이가 6~10페이지를 넘지 않는다.
• 시작(캐릭터,세계관소개) -> 중간(문제발생->갈등) -> 끝(해결) 의 흐름을 가진다.
• 캐릭터와 세계관의 매력을 초반 1분 30초 안에 명확하게 어필한다.
• 회상장면, 음악 몽타주, 사물비유 등을 통해 정보들을 간결하게 전달한다.
• 단 하나의 사건만 다룬다.
• 주인공의 이야기만 다룬다.

분석을 마치고 나니, 그동안 스크립트를 쓰는게 어려웠던 이유가 더 명확해 졌습니다.  

저는 '유진의 성공적인 무대를 보고 차별을 뒤로하고 박수치는 사람들'을 마지막 장면으로 상상하면서 스토리를 써왔습니다. 하지만 아무리 '피리부는 사나이' 뮤지컬을 고쳐 써보아도 마지막 장면에 큰 감동을 줄 수 없었습니다. 당연했습니다. 유진에게 이 무대가 왜 소중한지, 유진이 어떤 차별을 겪어왔는지 알지 못하면, 피리부는 사나이는 그냥 뻔하고 낯선 판타지 작품 중 하나가 될 뿐이니까요.

공연 속 스토리가 아닌 공연의 성공이 감동적이 되기 위해서는 '유진'이라는 캐릭터의 이야기를 더 소개해야한다는 사실을 깨달았습니다.

따라서 기존의 '웬디와 유진이 연기하는 레티언들을 구하고 영웅이 되는 피리부는 사나이의 이야기'가 아닌 '유진이 피리부는 사나이를 함으로써 꿈을 이루는 이야기' 에 조금더 초점을 맞춰 이야기를 발전시킬 예정입니다.

위와 같은 결론을 얻은 후, 여러분과의 약속대로 한주동안 5번의 러프한 스크립트를 작성했습니다.

다음목표는 7월 16일 까지 pdf형태로 만들어 작곡 담당자 분께 넘기는것입니다. 아직은 어떤 변수가 생길지 모르지만, 그 또한 공유할 수 있도록 하겠습니다.
